Chapter 1:

Rachel, Kurt and Santana were celebrating Rachel's part as Fanny when Kurt's phone rang. He walked away from the cheering group and answered with a smile.

"Hello?" His smile quickly fell. "Carole...slow down. What happened?"

By now both girls had gone silent and were watching Kurt. He began pacing as he ran his free hand through his hair.

"Is he okay?" Kurt continued. "I'm taking the next train. I need to be there. I'll see you soon."

Kurt immediately went into his room ans grabbed his suitcase before filling it with clothes as he fought back tears. Rachel leaned against his doorway, concern covering her face.

"Kurt? What's wrong? Is it your dad?" Rachel asked moving into Kurt's room.

Kurt shook his head in sorrow. He knew she would figure it out.

"Blaine?" Rachel's shaky hands covered her mouth as he shook his head again. "Oh God it's Finn, isn't it?"

"Rachel..." Kurt began as he turned to face a distraught Rachel.

"No, Kurt! Just tell me...is he alive?" Rachel begged. "Please Kurt, he's my person."

"He's alive." Kurt said after a minute. "He's critical but he's stable. That's all I know."

Kurt watched Rachel as tears fell down her face. "I'm coming with you."

"Rachel...you can't. You just got your dream part in Funny Girl. He would be devastated." Kurt explained guiding her to sit on his bed.

"I don't care about that anymore! Not if he's not there." Rachel exclaimed.

Kurt made a realization as he looked at her. "He never realized your dream changed."

"What?"

"Finn. He never realized that your dream changed when you two fell in love." Kurt explained.

Rachel nodded absently before speaking. "He asked me to surrender before putting me on that train." Tears flowed down her face. "I can't do this anymore. I need him, Kurt."

"I'm calling the train station now if you want to come with. I'm warning you, Rach. It won't be pretty." Kurt replied in all seriousness.

Rachel didn't respond but instead turned on her heel and went to pack a bag for Lima.

An hour later, Rachel and Kurt were on a train back to home. Kurt reached a hand out and placed it on her jiggling knee.

"Relax. We'll be there in a couple hours." He said softly.

"How did this happen?" She mumbled lowly but Kurt still heard her.

"He was T-boned on his way home from the school. Carole said the police found him unconscious when they arrived." Kurt said his voice cracking at the end.

Rachel let out a quiet sob and Kurt put his arm around her gently, letting her bury her face in his shoulder.

They reached the hospital as the sun was setting and Rachel was staring absently, numb out of the windshield.

"Diva, we're here." Kurt spoke trying to get her to smile.

Rachel unbuckled her seat belt and opened the door. Kurt knew she was on mission and wouldn't rest until she saw him. He followed her in after locking the car. He found her arguing with the receptionist.

"She won't let me see him , Kurt. It's family only." Rachel said with tears filling her eyes.

Kurt pulled her into a hug and looked at the receptionist. "I'm his brother, she can come with me. She's his fiance and she is family. You can ask his mother." Kurt said firmly. "Now, what room is Finn Hudson in?"

"I'm sorry." The receptionist stammered. "He's in ICU Room 4."

Rachel gasped and Kurt led her to the elevators. "It's okay. He's alive remember?"

"Why did you tell her I'm his fiance?" Rachel asked quietly as they walked.

"Because we both know you're going to marry that man one day and you were engaged." Kurt explained.

"Yeah, but we broke up." Rachel replied.

"Do you really think that will last?" Kurt asked her before spotting his dad outside a hospital room.

"Dad!" Kurt exclaimed as he saw Burt. Rachel trailed slowly behind. She kept staring at the door. They embraced and held onto each other a few minutes longer than usual. "Where's Carole?"

"With Finn. She won't leave him." Burt replied glancing at an obviously emotional distressed Rachel. "Why don't you go on in, sweetheart?"

Rachel moved slowly to the door and reached a shaky hand out to turn the knob. She wasn't sure if she was ready to see him like that. She opened the door and entered with her head down as she shut the door.

"Rachel?" She heard Carole ask.

Rachel looked up to look at the woman she considered a mother but her eyes drifted over to Finn's unconscious, unmoving form and Rachel finally broke. She fell to her knees, the sobs taking over her body. Carole knelt down beside her and held the poor girl as she cried, knowing exactly how she felt.

Rachel calmed down a few minutes later and she wiped her eyes before taking a proper look at Finn. He had one leg suspended from a sling, that had a cast on it. She saw stark white bandages wrapped around his chest, bringing more tears to her eyes. She saw bruises and cuts adorning his handsome face as she moved closer and reached to take his hand. "Can I have a few minutes with him?"

"Umm...sure I guess I can ask Burt to go with me to the cafeteria. You'll stay with him the whole time?" Carole replied.

"I'm not leaving him until he tells me to." Rachel responded sitting down next to Finn.

Carole closed the door behind her and Rachel turned her attention to the man who held her entire heart. "Hey you. You didn't have to end up in the hospital to get me to visit." She chuckled softly. "Please don't leave me. I need you, Finn. I love you so much. So you have to wake up, not now but when you're ready, okay? We have so much to do, baby. But only if you're here with me."

There was a soft knock on the door and Kurt entered slowly. "Sorry Diva, do you mind if I sit with him for a bit?"

"I told Carole that I wouldn't leave him and I don't really want to. Please don't make me." Rachel begged squeezing Finn's hand.

"I'm not asking you to, that would be suicide. I just want to sit in here for a bit. He always had a calming presence to me." Kurt explained.

"Has. He has a calming presence, he's not dead Kurt. He's still here." Rachel snapped a little. A sour look crossed her face and she gestured to the chair across from her. "I'm sorry, that was uncalled for. I'm just worried."

Kurt reached across Finn's bed and placed his hand on Rachel's that was laying on the bare patch of skin she found over his heart. "We all are but turning on one another isn't going to make him better, Rach."

Rachel laid her head down on the bed next to him, closing her eyes and getting lost in the memories.
