6 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EVENTS OF TOTAL DRAMA DEATH TOUR
Click. The apartment is dark, the lights left off. Numerous cans of beer dot the ground, making the man approaching a solitary desk at the wall furthest from the door feel as if he was walking on eggshells, both literally and figuratively. The man was incredibly tall, with a build that would put most weightlifters to shame. The look of slight apprehension on his face seemed alien considering his hulking figure and threatening posture. This man was known as Chef Hatchet, the co-host of one of the biggest reality shows in the world, Total Drama. He served alongside his good friend and fellow host, Chris McLean, as the cook for the contestants of Total Drama. When it concerned the contestants, Chef was told to make his food purposely horrible, to really make the contestants suffer during their stay on the first season of the show, Total Drama Island. Chef didn't have an issue with this. Why waste his high-quality ingredients on ungrateful teens who would find a way to complain in some way or other anyway?
Then came the second season of the show, Total Drama Action. This time, the location of the show moved from an island to a run-down film lot. This was where Chef began to run into problems with both his long-time friend and the producers of the show. Chef was unhappy with the pay he had been receiving for his work on the show, a very justified complaint considering the amount of dangerous stunts he had had to pull during the first season. However, Chris kept promising he would increase it and it would arrive in the mail but it never did. This prompted Chef to take action for himself. Chef roped one of the contestants of the cast, DJ, into a secret alliance in order to split the money with him once he won. Unfortunately for the chef, this secret alliance was uncovered sooner rather than later. Whilst none of this was shown on screen, Chef's influence over the show began to dwindle. Before, the producers of the show valued what Chef had to say and invited him to the various meetings that Chris would also be invited to attend. Chef acted as a good counterweight to Chris when he became overexcited about ideas of overly dangerous challenges and attempted to tone these ideas down to a more reasonable form for the contestants. After Chef was found interfering with the game, he was on thin ice. Suddenly, the number of meetings he found himself a part of started to dwindle and even when he was invited along, his ideas clearly were not valued as highly as they had once been. Chef would never admit it out loud but this worried him. If Chris didn't have that counterweight, would someone else step in and tell him he was going too far? That the challenges had to be toned down?
By the end of Total Drama Action, the only one keeping him even slightly in the loop was the host himself, Chris. So, with this in mind, Chef had driven himself to Chris's apartment, which he knew Chris was staying in until the third season was ready to be aired. Once he had arrived, he knocked on the door once and found to his surprise that the door was already open. Now, he was uncertainly shuffling towards the singular desk that held the man in question, frantically staring at the screen of his computer. He quickly opened the next can for himself and began taking large drinks from it. He was quick to slam it down on the desk and continue scrolling through…something. Chef was never good with computers. "Hey, Chris." Chef spoke up, in order to announce his presence and not scare his friend too much. "Huh?" Chris asked as he whipped around to face the voice. His confused expression quickly switched into a large grin as he locked eyes with his friend. "Chef! Buddy! What brings you here?!" He asked as he continued to drink. "Chris, man, your front door was unlocked." Chef stated after a moment of trying to read the man's expression. "Are you okay?" Chef questioned, allowing a small drop of concern to make its way into his voice. "Okay?! I'm better than okay, man! I'm feeling PUMPED!" Chris exclaimed as he pumped a fist into the air. This caught Chef's attention. Chef recalled the last time he'd seen Chris drunk. It was about a month ago, when he'd convinced Chef to crack open a cold one and watch a movie with him at his apartment. When there was a moment where the couple was torn apart, Chris started openly bawling. Recalling other instances of this, Chris was usually sad when drunk. So why was he so happy?
Chef raised a brow as he replied "Why? What happened?" "Here, have a look at this." Chris commanded as he focused back on his computer screen. Even though he hated technology, Chef could tell from his tone that Chris thought this was important. So, Chef reluctantly trudged towards Chris and focused his eyes on the computer screen. Chris pointed at his screen. "What does that say?" He questioned, waiting for the chef to find what he had his eyes focused upon. "Uh…" Chef began as he squinted his eyes. "Chref is SO canon?" Chef repeated as his eyes tried to adjust themselves to the light of the screen. "No, not that!" The host protested, as his cheeks became slightly more pink than they had been before. What was 'Chref'? Whatever it was, it seemed like Chris didn't want to talk about it. The chef tried again. "'Total Drama Action sucked. Where was the excitement?'" Chef repeated what he read on the computer screen. "There we go! This is a Total Drama forum, which basically means people talk all things Total Drama on here!" Chris explained, taking into account his friend's lack of ability and knowledge relating to technology. "Okay…so why does what that kid said matter?" Chef replied, confused. "It's the top post on the site, that's why!" Chris yelled, frustration evident in his tone. He needed to understand this further. "Why didn't people like it? It had the same maggots they all loved last time." Chef asked. "Many things. It fell short of the first season because: some of the characters not on the season were missed, the whole Gwen and Trent fiasco was hated, Beth being a finalist triggered a lot of people, the list goes on…" Chris explained, his frustration rising as he extended a finger every time he made a new point about why people didn't like the season.
At this point, Chef glanced at the man, his friend, seated next to him. If this was bad news, then why was he so happy? The question worried Chef immensely, in part because he knew that the main thing that cheered a man like Chris up, more than fame, fortune and money was one simple thing. Suffering. After a moment, Chef decided to be blunt about his suspicions. "So, if that's the case, why are you so damn happy?" Chef asked. At that moment, Chef noticed Chris change. His expression became warped, going from one of bitterness to one of intense happiness all at once. "Because I have the solution!" Chris yelled as he began to laugh. He couldn't keep the laughter in as it continued to spill out. Chef's eyes widened as he watched the man laugh and laugh. Was Chris…going insane? Chef reached a hand out in an attempt to firmly place it on his close friend's shoulder but before he could do it, Chris whirled around in his chair to face him. Chef's hand shot back, his instincts from his time on the battlefield kicking in.
"Hahahahaha! If everyone hates the new season, if everyone thinks it's not exciting enough, if the emotions and drama weren't enough for them, then I'll make it enough! I have an idea! All I have to do is make the third season the last!" Chris rambled as he struggled to contain himself. Chef, unsure of what to do and what Chris would do next, continued to question him. "How will ending the series help? You've still gotta bunch of loyal viewers who tune in every week." Chef queried. "Simple! I'll make them all pay! They seriously think that they can criticise the work of the greatest TV show host the world has ever seen and get away with it?! If they want drama, they'll get drama! They'll watch as the people they've come to love watching, the celebrities who have captured their hearts and minds, come to a gruesome end! They'll get to watch as their favourites get torn apart and show the ugly sides of themselves that no-one wants to see! They'll truly see the excitement they want then! You want high stakes?! You'll get them! Hahahahaha!" Chris yelled, at full volume now, as he explained his idea. At this point, Chris's words were enough for Chef to take a step backwards. It wasn't the power of the man in front of him that scared him. It was the power of his words and intentions that sent him reeling "You don't mean…you're going to hurt them? Intentionally?" Chef questioned, sending a look of barely concealed worry at his partner in crime. "I won't just hurt them! I'll kill them! Kill them all, tear apart their hopes and dreams, rip them away! I-I've got to tell the producers about this!" Chris exclaimed, as he rushed to leave the apartment.
He was quickly blocked, however, by the large, meaty hand of his friend. "Chris, think about what you're doing. Are you really gonna kill these people? I know you enjoy the suffering of others, but isn't this too far?" Chef retaliated, not liking the sound of Chris's rant at all. "Chef, buddy, that's not how reality TV works. You have to do what you have to do to climb the ladder. To remain exciting and relevant. Maybe people will get hurt but you won't be one of them. This is just the natural next step." Chris explained, pushing past the man's hand in his quest to leave the apartment. Chef once again blocked him, this time with his whole body. "But this will hurt you too! If you plan on killing them, then you'll be given a life sentence! Maybe worse, depending on where it is we're caught." Chef yelled, temper flaring. "Move. Before I make you a contestant in the upcoming season." Chris stated, his intentions clear. It was at that moment that he knew that Chris was a lost cause. The man he'd spent so much time around and gotten to know had gone off the deep end. He'd lost it. Once Chef stopped thinking such dark thoughts and refocused on the situation in front of him, his friend was gone, in more ways than one.
With the realisation that he wasn't coming back, Chef settled himself down on Chris's couch as he thought about what to do next. Should he run? Get himself clear of Chris and the whole show like he almost did at the end of last season? No, Chris wouldn't allow that. He was contractually bound to the show and he knew from how he acted last season that he wasn't willing to let the chef go that easily. With that, Chef knew he would just have to put up with whatever was to come in the future. Hopefully, Chris's idea would instantly be shut down by the producers…but Chef was doubtful. When he needed it, Chris had a way with words that was almost unparalleled. There's a chance he actually gets this greenlit. Chef got up from Chris's couch and shook his head. He couldn't worry about this right now, he had to get home. There was no way anyone sane would accept this idea. That was exactly why he was worried. However, Chef knew he needed to get home before it got too late and get out of the apartment of the man who could very well be the end of him. With slow, plodding footsteps that had an air of finality to them, Chef Hatchet trudged out of Chris McLean's apartment and towards his destiny.
