After his phone call with Kate abruptly ended, Kevin then wrote down Renee Montoya's name on the list of people who were now infected with the Gamma Venom, which was something Kevin was nicknaming the compound. Other people on the list were Harleen Quinzel, Pamela Isley, Selina Kyle, the many muscular brutes who were now deceased after dying from sudden heart attacks, and finally, Barbara Gordon. Kevin wandered over to Patrick and asked, "did you speak to the mayor and the commissioner?" Patrick nodded and confirmed, "Yes. They know now. We should run some tests to see if we can undo the infection."
"Sounds good, but before we do that, I should get another caffeine boost," said Kevin. He got out of the lab to go to the soda machine. Suddenly, a ringtone of the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? theme song started playing on Kevin's cell phone. Kevin looked at who was calling him and saw it was his mother Andrea. Given that Andrea lived in Bellevue Washington, there was a possibility that it was 3 hours earlier than what it was in Gotham, and there was a possibility that Andrea knew what was going on. Kevin picked up the phone and said nonchalantly, "hello?" The voice of a middle-aged woman then said, "Kevin! I heard about all the rampaging that was going on in Gotham through the news. What's going on?"
"We're still trying to figure it out Mom," said Kevin, "as far as we know, Bane must have mixed the usual Venom with unknown components alongside gamma radiation. It's been turning a lot of people into muscular monsters. This is like something out of a science fiction comic book." Andrea asked on the phone, "Are you okay? You haven't been harmed, have you?" Kevin leaned on the wall and said, "I mean, I literally witnessed Barbara transform right before my eyes, so whether I'm mentally okay is up for debate. But nobody in the lab division of Wayne Enterprises has been harmed so far. Everyone else is safe, for the time being. If any infectants cause potential damage, we can just hide in the bunker, there should be plenty of food and medical supplies to bunker down in." Andrea sighed in relief, "thank goodness you're okay."
"The truth of the matter is, I'm actually terrified for Barbara," admitted Kevin, "she's going down a dark path and I don't want her to go through anything more horrible. I want to save her, Mom. I just don't want us to lose her…" He sighed sadly. "I understand how scared you are, son." Andrea calmly said on the phone, "but the best thing you can do right now is pray for her." Kevin nodded and said, "I'll do my best." Andrea replied on the phone, "I'll be praying for you okay? Please be safe. I love you." Kevin smiled a little and said, "I love you too Mom." Andrea then said, "bye…" Kevin then bought a highly caffeinated soda to stay awake and got back to work. He and the scientists did many experiments with the Gamma Venom and bonded it with plasma to see if there was a way to undo it. But the result was always the same. If the procedure was undone, it would result in death. Kevin and the scientists tried many times, but by the 20th time, the result was still the same. "I can't believe this." Kevin sadly said as he wandered out of the lab and into the men's bathroom stall, "there's no cure for this condition. Any attempt to undo the infection will result in killing the host. Which means Barbara could die…" Kevin covered his face and started to cry. He couldn't bear the thought of losing Barbara this way. He just wanted his friend that he enjoyed having literary and scientific discussions with, the old friend that Kevin could trust, the old friend that Kevin enjoyed binge watching Doctor Who and Supernatural with, the one girl he was in love with. "Ah hell, a bitter cynic would say I'm a simp for being in love with Barbara." Kevin quietly said to himself as he wiped his tears, "but I wonder, if I'd confessed my feelings for her before she took that serum, would Babs have listened to me and not tested that stuff on herself? Guess I'll never know that alternate outcome, or if she would listen to my reasoning… But I've got to do something. I may not be able to undo the infection, but I can find a way to save her…"
Kevin then got out of the Wayne Enterprises science division and into his car to go to the Gotham City Police Department. He drove all the way there, and was surprised to see that it was still there despite possible heavy damage from all the rampaging. Kevin parked the car and got out. He went inside the police department to see if Barbara's father Jim was still there. He wandered over to the outside door of the commissioner's office and knocked on it. Suddenly, the door fell down flat in front, Jim seeing Kevin. "Uh… sorry… I'll pay for that…" Kevin said awkwardly. "No, no it's fine, those brutes have caused a lot of damage lately, and that door, along with this department, was bound to suffer because of it," said Jim, his voice sounding resigned, "come on in." Kevin awkwardly came in and said, "It's um, it's nice to meet you Commissioner… I'm sorry that we had to meet under such stressful circumstances." Jim looked at Kevin and asked, "aren't you that boy Barbara was always telling me about? The handsome boy who works for the science division at Wayne Enterprises? Kevin Bellman?"
"Close enough, but yes," said Kevin. He did a double take and asked, "Wait, Barbara thinks I'm handsome?" He blushed. "Yeah, she told me that she likes watching Doctor Who and that Supernatural show with you," said Jim, "did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like Bruce Wayne?" Kevin rubbed the back of his neck and replied, "maybe a couple times back when I was living in Bellevue… But I guess you figured out that I'm a friend of Barbara's. How much do you know right now, Commissioner?" Jim rubbed his eyebrows and said, "just call me Jim. I know that my own daughter has turned into an 8-ft green skinned muscular brute. And I know she killed The Joker right in front of me out of revenge. Of course, I can't blame her for what happened. Joker was beyond reason, and if I'd had an opportunity, I would have thrown the book at him a long time ago too." Kevin confessed, "I witnessed her transform right in front of me."
"So, Venom mixed with The Lazarus Pit and gamma radiation," said Jim. "Yeah, the scientists and I have been trying to find a cure, but it looks like it's permanent," said Kevin, "but just because your daughter is mutated, doesn't mean that she isn't lost forever." Jim looked at Kevin and asked, "do you think you can reason with her and tell her to come to her senses? She won't listen to me, son." Kevin gave a determined look and said, "with all due respect, I refuse to believe she's lost, Jim. When I first saw her in that hulking form, she saw me and it was as if that part of her that's still there recognized me. It's as if she didn't want to hurt me. Just because a person stumbles and falls doesn't mean they're lost forever. There's still good in Barbara, I believe it! I want to save her Jim, because I love her!" When Kevin realized the last statement he said, he covered his mouth, embarrassed. "I knew it! I knew you liked my daughter back," said Jim. "I, I'm sorry…" Kevin said, getting red in the face. "Kevin, whenever Barbara spoke of you, she always spoke positively," said Jim, "and I admire the optimism you have. It's like Superman. People take his optimism for granted and say that optimism and Boy Scout attitude is what makes him so boring. But people forget that optimism and compassion are Superman's greatest strengths as a person. You are right though, just because a person stumbles and falls, it doesn't mean they're lost forever. If you believe that there's still good in Barbara, fight for that belief. I hope you can save Barbara. Do whatever it is you need to do, Kevin. Godspeed to you." Kevin smiled and said, "thank you Jim." Little did Kevin and Jim know was that Bane was watching over and listening to everything Kevin said through bugging and wiretap. "So, the niño thinks he can save Barbara through love?" Bane quietly laughed to himself, "Ese chico es un tonto ingenuo. His feelings for la chica lisiada will not only be his downfall, but hers as well…"
