For the next hour, Kevin looked for Barbara around the damaged Gotham City. He prepared for this, getting a duffle bag worth of clothes that would fit Barbara if she shrank back to normal. But Kevin knew that it would be foolish to approach Barbara since she probably wasn't alone. She was practically recruiting with the Gamma Venom enhanced Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Renee Montoya, and most recently, Nora Fries. They would most likely smash or freeze Kevin if he tried to approach them. What Kevin didn't know was that these six muscular women were looking for Bane, ready to kill him. But so far, they couldn't find him. It's as if Bane wanted to be found on his own terms. One should ask, who is truly the hunter? It took Kevin an hour to find Barbara, and as predicted, she was with the other five women in all their colorful, naked, and muscular glory. Kevin then went inside a building which also had an intercom on the outside. Kevin did a bit of arranging on the intercom to put a one hour loop of a song, long enough for a distraction. The intercom then started playing random music as a singing voice said, "It's astounding. Time is fleeting. Madness takes its toll. But listen closely. Not for very much longer. I've got to keep control." As the song continued to play on the intercom, Harley asked, "hey who's playin' Rocky Horror? That's weird and random." Selina glared and said, "is this someone's idea of trying to trap us? Let's see who's playing that song on the intercom and teach that sucker a lesson…" She, Harley, Ivy, Renee, and Nora smashed their way into the building to find out who was playing that annoyingly catchy song on the intercom.
For Barbara, something was off about this. Was someone duping the others to get to her? If so, who? It couldn't be Bane. Suddenly from in front of her, Barbara could see Kevin with a large duffel bag. He cautiously approached her. She looked at him and asked, "Kevin… did you dupe the women into a wild goose chase?" Kevin nodded and confessed, "it was the only way to get you alone." He wandered closer to her until they were face to face, one foot apart. "Why are you here?" Barbara asked calmly. Kevin looked up at Barbara and said, "I just wanted to talk to you. That's all." Barbara pointed at Kevin's duffle bag and asked, "what's in the bag?"
"Clothes," admitted Kevin, "look Barbara, the scientists and I, we tried to find a way to undo your condition." Barbara looked at her body and asked, "why undo this? This is me. I mean, I can shrink back down to my regular self at will, but I like this." Kevin nodded and said, "yeah…And sadly there's no cure. If we try to remove the Venom from your bloodstream, it'll kill you. And that's the last thing I want to do. We just want to help you. I want to help you. We can stop this right now. You could use your powers for good in order to stop Bane." Barbara gave Kevin a sad look and said, "I'm beyond helping now, Kevin. You know what I've done. Deep down, I'm a monster no better than Joker. Besides, brute or not, I don't deserve a wholesome person like you Kevin. You could have any other woman in the world. Why not be with Kara?" Kevin shook his head and said, "Kara's in love with Jimmy. I'm not going to interfere with that. I still care for you. I don't believe you're a monster, Barbara." He held her hand when saying he cared for her and continued, "I refuse to believe that you're a monster lost forever. I know there's still good in you. I will never give up on you." Barbara's eyes started to tear up and the storm inside them started to calm. Was the green starting to become sky blue? "You would still care for me despite all my faults?" Barbara asked, her voice vulnerable. She got on her knees and allowed Kevin to gently caress her face. "Yes," said Kevin, "And truth be told, I kind of have a thing for giant women."
This caused Barbara to laugh. Kevin knew that he was able to get through to her. "People can change for the better. Do you know why I believe that?" Kevin asked. "Why?" Barbara asked. "Because I saw my mother change for me," said Kevin, "I lo-"
WHAM!
Suddenly, Kevin got punched in the back so hard, he landed face first into the hard brick wall. He then landed flat on his back, revealing a scraped forehead, a bloody nose, and a limp arm on the left side of his collarbone. And who punched Kevin so hard? It was Bane attacking from behind when both their guards were down! "KEVIN!!!!" Barbara yelled, scared for her love. "I knew he would be your downfall chica," taunted Bane. Barbara stood up and growled, "if you killed him, I swear…" Bane punched Barbara in the face and said, "his punishment shall be more severe. I will-" Barbara got mad and punched Bane right back in the face. "You call that a punch?" Bane taunted, "You know nothing of strength!" He then activated the Gamma Venom, the strength enhancing compound coursing through his veins as his muscles expanded and he grew a bit taller. The two of them locked fists and then they smashed and fought, fighting inside the building, punching, and kicking, their fighting savage. Suddenly, Bane got the upper hand. He punched Barbara so hard in the gut, that she was lifted a few inches in the air. Bane then punched Barbara square in the jaw causing her to be lifted a few more feet in the air. He jumped and then headbutted Barbara. She was ready to go down, and Bane added insult to injury by kicking her right in the back. She then landed flat on her front, Bane's right knee on top of her neck.
"Look at you," taunted Bane, "you thought that you could defeat me? A feeble cripple who couldn't take down a fool dressed up like a clown? And that puto Kevin thought that love would save you. Like I said before, you know nothing of strength! And that puto's punishment shall be more severe. I will make him watch as I destroy you. I'll release such hell upon you that you will then say yes to embracing the sweet release of death. Then I will force him to watch as I kill his friends and family and I destroy his beloved city, I will make sure he suffers a thousand fold. When Gotham is in ashes, only then will he have my permission to die. And there will be nothing you can do to stop me." Barbara started to get enraged, and her eyes glowed a neon green as her love for Kevin was what motivated her to get back up and fight back. "NEVER!!!" Barbara defiantly roared, and she punched Bane in the balls hard enough to where he landed on his butt.
Barbara got back up on her feet, turning a darker shade of green and growing bigger and more muscular. "I WON'T LET YOU HURT KEVIN AND MY FAMILY ANYMORE!!!" Barbara roared as she punched Bane in the face hard, damaging his mask. She grabbed Bane by the tubes connecting his mask, and then she yanked it off like ripping out chest hair through waxing. This caused Bane to deflate a little. She ripped his mask off and then slammed his face into a wall, grabbed his ankle and then thrashed his body around on walls and the floor like he was a rag doll. "WHO'S FEEBLE NOW?!?!?!?" Barbara taunted as she lifted Bane in the air with both her arms. She then slammed Bane's back right into her right knee, shattering it completely, just like Bane did to Batman all those years ago. Bane screamed in pain, knowing the irony of his defeat. Barbara then discarded Bane, leaving him crippled and defenseless. "Are you going to do to me what you did to Joker?" Bane asked, coughing up blood. Barbara looked down at Bane's crippled body and said, "no. Live with this humiliation. Live with the knowledge that you were destroyed by the very power you sought." She then left Bane right there.
Barbara then ran over to where she last saw Kevin, and saw his injured body still on the ground outside the now damaged building. She shrank back to her now eight foot form, her green skin back to being light as she gently approached Kevin, praying he was alive. Barbara got on her knees and gently picked Kevin up, cradling him. "Please…" she tearfully begged, "please don't die on me Kevin… I can't lose you…" 45 seconds later, Kevin gasped and regained consciousness. "Oh Kevin, thank God you're alive!" Barbara said with relieved joy. "Oh come on Babs, you know I'm like my old man," joked Kevin, "I'm too stubborn to die. Though I won't lie, I'm in a lot of pain… ow… I think the left side of my collarbone is broken… aoowww…" Barbara took the duffle bag, stood up while gently carrying Kevin bridal style, and said, "it's okay Kevin… I'm gonna get you help." Kevin joked, "did I save you, or are you saving me?" Barbara started to run really fast, peaking at 40 miles per hour, which was the equivalent to 60 or 70 kilometers per hour. She then leapt 80 ft in the air with Kevin in her arms. She could feel the rush of the wind blowing through her hair as she kept on leaping. Although he was in intense pain, Kevin was practically enjoying this leaping. "Is this what it felt like, the adrenaline of free falling from building to building back when you were Batgirl?" Kevin asked, looking up at Barbara. "It was," confirmed Barbara. "I can see why you liked it," said Kevin. Barbara wanted to smile at Kevin's warmth and his humor, but she knew that what she was about to do next was going to be the most painful decision in her life. It made her think of the climactic scene in The Iron Giant when the titular character said goodbye to Hogarth.
10 minutes later, Barbara landed at the Gotham Hospital, the same place Kevin's grandfather Doctor Thomas Wayne used to work at and funded/invested in. Some of the nurses were outside on a coffee break when Barbara landed with Kevin in her arms, dropping the duffle bag. The nurses were afraid of Barbara, her being an 8 foot green skinned muscular giant woman, and they thought she killed Kevin, or something. Barbara then showed Kevin and said with desperation, "please, help him! His name is Kevin Beaumont and he's been seriously injured! He needs medical attention!" The nurses hesitated, but one of them said, "get that man a stretcher, stat!" They ran inside and a minute later, they came back out with a medical stretcher, although some were cautious because they thought Barbara would smash them. Barbara gently placed Kevin on the stretcher and he laid down. Barbara tearfully looked at Kevin one last time, and then she turned her back. Kevin was puzzled and asked, "wait, Barbara? What are you doing?" Barbara then started to run away from the hospital and she quietly said, "goodbye Kevin…" Kevin reached out with his right arm and cried out, "Barbara, wait! Don't go, please! Please come back! I love you!" Barbara then leapt up with tears in her eyes, fading from view. Kevin had no idea where she went.
