As Owen watched Claire get in the jeep he sighed, starting to climb the trailer. He could hear the barking in the background, even as the jeep started to rev to life, and he would climb over to where the trailer hitch had the safety latch. Bait, that had been his idea after all, a damn fool idea, but the only one that would work. Owen took the latch in his hand and twisted it, grabbing the hinge of the trailer back. Safety latch, as the hinge came loose, and the door fell forward, as he heard a squawk come from inside.
Barking closer, but he'd be safe up here, as he would watch the creature inside take its first steps. It was about the size of a man, bright feathers, and had a beak that curved into a sharp point. On first glance someone might mistake It's eye though was unmistakably alien to modern eyes. A Gastornis, a terror bird, Levine had said. Owen didn't particularly care, although he had been told only the very rough details. That it was something not on InGen's list, that had appeared in Mexico. Before the cloning, meaning it came all the way from the islands.
The terror bird looked back at him as it saw Owen, but it couldn't get up there...could it? No. Owen stood up on the trailer, as he saw the bird's head whip the other direction, the sound of the jeep leaving, and the other noise, the barking...and the sound of another car. Owen realized who that could be. Cooper. It had to be, he thought, as he shook his head. He thought he would have more time, but it seemed that he would have to work with what he got.
Turning, he could see that the trailer was close to one of the buildings, as he tensed himself, taking a step, and leaping. A moment later, he caught the edge of the building, just barely, but he had more incentive to try, given the terror bird below him was still close. Grunting, Owen pushed his shoulder up, using it as leverage to get his body over the side as he lay there for a moment taking some deep breaths. He could hear the barking louder now.
He could hear the sound of the car puttering off, as he sighed. Thankfully Claire and Levine were out of the way. Mostly Claire... he was sure that this was going to be fairly rough to get out of this one. But he had gotten out of stickier situations in the navy, he mused. Couldn't stay down here forever, as much as he wanted to, and so Owen would start crawling along the edge of the roof. He remembered he'd been able to sneak quietly the last time, so he'd do so again, as he saw the car come in, with it's trailer. It would park at the opposite side of town.
The Terror bird turned its head at the noise, and started to stalk towards the sound. At the same time, the engines turned off. The trailers would start to open again, as he swallowed. Fast response time. He hadn't really called that long, and they were already here. Well it helped that this place was within a decent radius of the containment centre, Out of the box. Delta, Echo...Beta...and then Blue poured out in single file as he saw Cooper get out too.
He shook his head. Watching Cooper stare down the Terror bird. When Owen had called, he'd done it from a burner. Made sure to make it sound as vague as possible, and here he was seeing the fruits of his labor, as he saw the man staring. But his confusion- if indeed that's what it was, it didn't last for long. He started shouting, barking orders at the raptors. From here he couldn't quite make out what he was saying, but once again the general gist of it was clear. The raptors were hesitating only the briefest moment, before they started running.
The Terror bird took off too, heading towards a nearby alley, as Owen turned and crawled carefully. He knew he had to be careful here. As the raptors gave chase, Owen saw Cooper was standing by himself. He squinted. He'd never have a better opportunity, he thought as he would look over at the next building. He didn't know if he would make it, as he jumped, grunting as he landed roughly on the other side. A quick glance confirmed to him that it hadn't been noticed.
Easy enough to see why, as he shook his head. Cooper was slowly starting to walk towards the sound. Owen could see the device in his hand. He frowned as he took a deep breath, priming himself as he looked around. There was a fire escape to his right. He was going to do this. No question about it.
Cooper was walking towards the scene with some bemused interest. He'd received that call earlier, half expecting it to be a prank or some nutjob. Apparently half of these calls were. But it had felt different to him somehow, and he'd pressed, the caller had said it was something they'd never seen before. That had made him go for it.
He knew that Owen had been the face of the recapture unit for a long time. He had only just been given the position after he'd been fired. Owen was a bit of a legacy to live up too... he gritted his teeth. But he'd do it. After all, hadn't he managed to capture the only known Tyrannosaur? That had to count for something. At least it would, but Jessica was insistent that they'd redouble their efforts. She wanted her little park, her 'sanctuary' to look good and filled. All the same while, they had to appear to be busy.
He had the remote in his hand, as he would feel relieved. He'd managed to train the raptors... it was rather simple when he had these on him. Resistance training, the chips, it was easy. Jessica had explained something to him when he'd taken on the job, about how to simplify his line of work. The raptors were tuned into one frequency, but for larger animals which weren't always tuned in with the raptors- it was quite another thing altogether. Usually they chipped them from a helicopter with a dart gun, and simply set the frequency on the chip to start.
That was how he'd managed to capture the Rex. Apparently Owen had never done it like that but... he was different. He hadn't come in with whatever 'bonds' the man imagined he'd had. He stepped forward, looking down the alleyway, as he heard yelping and screeching. The raptors were busy chasing their prey. It was about their size, so all they needed to do was corner it, and he could do the rest, as he patted the dart gun on his hip. If things went south he could always use that.
The raptors seemed to have learned real quick after the resistance training, he was really sure that the raptors themselves would not be a problem. Cooper was so distracted as he walked, he didn't notice what was behind him. There was the sound of a footstep, and he started to turn. Just then, there was a sudden buzzing, and a shock, and he slumped down to the ground, dazed.
Owen stood over Cooper, as he put his taser back in his pocket. He didn't want to have had to use this, but it was much better than a physical confrontation would have been. He had no way of knowing, too many variables, and if the man used the remote to call the raptors, it would be over. Carefully looking down, he grabbed the remote, and started running down the alleyway. Looking around, he could see the edge of the town, as the raptors were chasing the screaming terror bird. So far so good. They hadn't seen him, which meant that he still had some time. He started looking around, remembering the documents Zia had sent Claire and himself.
The frequency of the raptors. He had them all here. They were usually kept on the same tune, as he would look at the remote. Not sure how long the shock would keep cooper out, he had to think. No time to dawdle, as he would get out something from his pocket, a list he'd copied and kept here, as he looked for one frequency in particular. There was one frequency that covered all of them she had said. Then another for the individual raptors. He had the one for Blue, as he turned the dial.
He wasn't sure if it would work, but as he watched the raptors running down the plain, one of the raptors turned its head. Blue. He smiled. Well, that just meant that it was working after all. He sighed with relief, as he began stepping towards the raptor, as the Raptor sniffed the air, no doubt taking in his scent. He smiled as he stepped forward and –
"The hell you doing Grady?" He turned as he saw Cooper standing behind him, Dart gun in hand as he would be staring at Owen. He had a scrape on his forehead from where he'd hit the ground, but otherwise he looked alright. Grady froze, as he took a deep breath. Shit. The taser hadn't worked as well as he thought. Well, shit. He thought as he groaned.
"Nothing I shouldn't have done a long time ago, Coop." Owen said with a slight tense grin as he eyed the dart gun. He knew where Cooper had got that. In the containment centre, they had ones like that. Hell he'd had one issued to him when he'd been working for masrani. It held a tranquilizer dart, the sort that he'd use to take down dinos once they were cornered by the raptors. That much morphine, it would take down a rhino- for dinosaurs it was hard to tell because of how sturdy they were.
Well, he was pretty sure what would happen if a human got hit. Cooper was keeping the dart gun steady at him, as he looked at him straight in the eye. "Hand over the remote and the taser. I don't know what the hell you think you're doing." He was breathing hard, clearly still pissed off from being tased, which was frankly, sort of understandable. Owen looked stared, but as he did so, he was already fidgeting with his other hand.
The man was so focused on him he didn't think anything was wrong, even as Owen would distract him by disarming himself first. He could see the way Cooper tensed as he pulled the taser out, and then dropped it to the floor, he could see the way the man's eyes followed the taser. Not yet, he thought as he turned his gaze naturally, as he would be almost carelessly turning the dial with his thumb. One thing he remembered. There were presets.
There was a yelp, and both men turned as the raptors suddenly stopped. Barking as if they were met with a shock. The Gastornis turned , apparently just in time, as it had been pushed into a corner, but now it had a fighting chance. He smiled, as he knew that he had a fighting chance too. Turning, Owen moved fast, his hand swinging over to the man, remote still in hand.
Cooper swung his arm too, but too late, as Owen felt the man stagger back as the remote hit his shoulder. He stumbled slightly, but knew that he couldn't waste the chance. The man was already going to recover soon enough. So he would start to run back the way he'd came, already almost out of breath. He knew he didn't have much time, as he heard the raptors already start to yelp as they ran near him. The Gastornis was also running, in which direction he didn't know or care.
He only cared about one raptor of the four here. Blue...Owen could hear the raptor crying out, as he was already thumbing his way to the preset. He wasn't sure, but he knew one thing- he needed Blue to follow him.
