"Please! I don't have anything else that I can give you!" A woman pleaded with fear shown in her face. The sharp edge of a pocket knife pressed against her throat.
The thug could only growl with anger at the lack of valuable items she lacked on her person. All that time and energy stalking this broke broad for nothing. Then a disgusting grin curled its way to the muggers face. "Oh I wouldn't say that."
The woman was confused for a moment as the thug slowly traced his pocket knife down her neck to the center of her chest. Her eyes widened in horror as to what that action implied. She could only close her eyes and whimper as she was powerless to stop what was coming.
He suddenly felt a hand tightly grip his shoulder to the point where he winced.
"Didn't ya' hear? The lady said she wasn't interested."
The thug heavily frowned as he addressed whoever was stupid enough to play hero. "Listen, if you wanna walk outta of here alive you'd better get lost before things get worse for you alright?!"
The thug heard a very low almost primal like growl come from the man. Suddenly he was forcefully pulled away from the woman only for him to be slammed harshly against the alleyways brick wall. He grunted loudly as he was about push off the wall and shove his knife between his ribs.
That plan was thrown out the window when he suddenly felt a sharp tip end of something in his left nostril. Looking down with startled eyes he saw a closed blue gloved fist that had a pointed blade that shout out of his middle knuckle. Blood trickled down slowly along its length even though it might as well been a small knick with how lightly he was pulling his nose.
"Here's how we're gonna do this chump." Snapping his eyes up he finally got a clear look at the man who wore a yellow and black jumpsuit. The thug felt his blood run cold at the barely restrained fury that were held in the white lenses of the mask. "'Cause there are only two real ways that this can go down. I ain't gonna waste my breath tellin' ya but I'm sure yer' smart enough to figure it out right?"
He let those words hang in the air as he pressed the sharp tip even further making him cry out in pain and terror at the thought of his nose being rip out of his face.
Dropping his pocket knife the whimpered as he raised his arms in surrender.
He let out a baleful smirk showing his upper canines. "Smart choice."
Grabbing a fistful of his shirt Wolverine harshly threw him to the ground near a large trash pile. The thug looked back at him only to receive a heavy narrowed glare. As if he was daring him to try. Not wanting to test his luck the thug scrambled to his feet and ran out of the alleyway.
Wolverine sheathed his claw as he watched the thug run with his tail between his legs. He really wanted to teach that punk a very hard and painful lesson but the woman was frightened enough. She didn't need to see anymore than she already has. Picking up the purse that the thug thankfully dropped when he snatched him away from her Logan handed it to the woman who managed to calm down after the whole ordeal.
"Head on home lady." Wolverine told her, jerking his thumb over his shoulder. "If you know any shortcuts 'round here that'll get you there faster take 'em."
She fervently nodded, taking his advise she mumbled a "thank you" she ran out of the alleyway.
Sighing heavily Logan could only shake his head. The question of why in the hell he was still doing this again was still bothering him. He was now an active and full-time member of the Justice League. The news around the watchtower had spread just as fast when he chose not to join the first time in the space station. He had the opportunity to go on some of their missions which allowed him to see how they coordinated themselves.
From what he could see they did it very well. With the League practically being compared to an army most reserved members were broken off into small individual groups with a senior member acting as the squad leader. Everyone would be given their respective roles that would be necessary for the task that the mission would entail. Standard but effective protocols.
So now that he was an official member Wolverine knew that he needed to be the very thing he had and still struggles with even today.
Being a team player.
Logan's lone wolf tendencies would creep up from time to time but thankfully he didn't give into his old habits as easily as he did in the past. He proved himself as a valuable member of the League and most were glad to have him at their side on a mission.
However, while Wolverine followed his orders to the letter and worked with the other members out on the field he didn't interact with them on a personal level. He would keep his distance from everyone at the watchtower. Whether it was from training in the gym or monitor duty he would seclude himself from everyone else. Thankfully they respected his space mostly because of the glares he sent them when they wanted to chat with him.
Even though they were a group of mostly respected heroes they weren't the X-Men. And they never will be.
"It's good that I finally now have a helping hand! It makes defending the city a little more easier."
Logan blinked and looked upward where the unexpected voice came from. The warrior heroine Wonder Woman was smiling down at him from the air.
"Saw that huh? Seein' that your here I'd take it you took care of him?"
Diana nodded as she landed in front him. "Yes I did! I left him for the authorities and they'll arrive shortly to take him into custody." She said, gesturing her head to the open end of the alley way where the thug was incapacitated.
"Figured as much. Yer' scent does stand out alot. Even 'round this pile of garbage." He commented pointedly. He ignored the fact that her scent was downright pleasant to his nose.
Wonder Woman blinked owlishly, unsure of how to give a proper response to that. "I see."
Letting out a light grunt the yellow and blue clad man waved his hand in a farewell gesture. "Well if thats all you wanted to say then thanks. Now if you don't mind I gotta get back to work."
"Actually I wanted to speak with you about something."
Stopping mid step he tried holding back a sigh that was trying to find it way out of his mouth. He really wasn't in the mood to listen to whatever the Amazon wanted him to hear. All he wanted was get back to his patrol and call it in for tonight.
"Whaddaya want?" He turned completely toward her, not even bothering to hide the clear frustration and annoyance in his voice. "If this is a lecture on how I handled that punk then save yer breath. I wasn't gonna hurt him too badly, though I'd be lyin' if I said a part o' me didn't t' give him a proper nose job."
"I probably should actually. I can't say that I approve of your excessive methods." Wonder Woman chastised, eyes slightly narrowed as she firmly placed a hand on her hip. She ignored the dimissive snort he threw at her. "But that isn't what I wanted to discuss."
The feral mutant frowned as he regarded her curiously.
Her eyes loosened up the reprimanding look from before. Diana crossed her arms as she sighed, trying to find the words that she can approach him with.
"Logan I know...that we can't replace the team you once worked with." Wonder Woman said softly with sincerity.
Unfortunately her words did not put him at ease. Wolverine clenched both of his fists tightly, his entire body tensing and shaking with so much rage.
Oblivious to his inner crisis Diana continued. "But please. I implore that you give us a-"
"Damn right you can't!" He blurted out loudly at her, his voice echoing though out the narrowed hollow space. "And no one up in that station ever will."
Diana couldn't help the pitiable look on her face. He was still holding onto the grief even after all these months.
She was also aware of how Wolverine was the talk of the Watchtower in the recent periods since he had joined. Many of her friends and colleagues wouldn't stop going on how he was a reliable teammate. They praised his bravery and ferociousness in the heat of battle. As if he were a spartan who would refuse to die until his enemies fell with him. If what everyone was saying is true then she'd love to witness this in person if she ever got the chance.
There was also talk about how...unapproachable he was. While she only had a brief interaction with him at his apartment she could safely say that what others are saying about him are some what true. But unlike the others she knew the reason for his aloof behavior. The man has been and is still dealing with so much.
"Lets get one thing straight darlin'." Wolverine heavily asserted, jabbing his finger at her to make sure she was listening. "I offered t' join the League but it sure as hell don't mean we're close. The X-men weren't just a team they were a family! And that ain't somethin' you can ever replace."
The harsh words that he directed at her caused a sharp pang to errupt in her chest. Thankfully all that was showed was a minute frown on her face as she listened to his ramblings. Though she couldn't deny that his irate words were likely justified. One couldn't easily replace the ones you would consider family on a dime.
Despite having formed bonds with those on mans world, be they powerful or not Wonder Woman couldn't deny that they weren't as strong as the ones felt she towards her warrior sisters on Themyscira. They were practically her family given that a good majority of them along with her mother had made her the woman that she is today.
But if she had lost Themyscira, her sisters, and mother would she be able hold onto the strong bonds she had formed with everyone over the years?
Not wanting to lose herself fully in her thoughts Diana sighed heavily to bring her mind back to the present. "Perhap you're right. Forgive me, it wasn't my intention to be insensitive."
The tone in which she had spoke sounded measured though Wolverine could tell that she was hiding how his words got to her a little. He could smell a small trace sadness in the air. In that instant he quickly regretted his words. Logan internally cursed seeing as how he put himself in the same situation he did with Takehashi. Lashing out at the those who were only trying to help him.
"I should get back to my patrol." She said, turning around she was preparing to leave. "Maybe we can't have the familial bond you had with your former team. But I hope that someday we can atleast be friends."
Wonder Woman shot herself into the sky and flew off.
Logan stood in the middle of the alleyway watching her fly off, mulling over those last simple words. He ran his hand down his face wishing he can take what he said back.
"Still rough around da' edges as ever. Even with da' gorgeous ones."
A charming and suave voice spoke from within the alleyway though the tone of it held a tinge of disappointment in it. Glancing to his left he saw a man with brown reddish hair who was leaning on the wall. He wore a long trench coat that was a similar color skillfully shuffling a deck of cards in his hands.
"Y'know how it is with me cajun." He replied nonchalantly with a heavy shrug of his shoulders. "Was never the one with any type of tact."
"That I do mon ami. That I do." He glanced up at him while still playing with his cards. "Mind if I ask you a question?"
"Usually I did." Wolverine wryly said as the corners of his lips twitched up ever so slightly.
Gambit lowly chuckled at that. His face then became nuetral, crimson and black eyes never leaving Logan's. "Whats with da whole not makin' new friends thing hm? I thought you moved passed that years ago."
Wolverine could only roll his eyes at that. Since he was part of his mind then he should know the answer to his own question.
"If its one thing I hate 'sides warm beer its repeatin' myself. Y'know why I said what I said!"
Gambit could only sigh as he pocketed his deck of cards into his trench coat. "And yet your standin' there wishin' you hadn't said what you said."
"Get to the point!" He snapped at him with a gutteral growl. Remy alway knew how to push at your buttons, especially his. He wished he was tangible just so he could punch that pretty boy look off his face.
The former thief smugly smirked and crossed his arms over his chest. Making Wolverine's desire to deck him across the jaw all the more prominent. "With pleasure. You're afraid dat if you get close to anyone in da league you'll lose da ties you had with the X-men forever."
Logan involuntary flinched at Gambit's claim.
"I know I know. The big bad Wolverine ain't supposed to be scared of nothin' right?" He casually said with a lazy wave of his hand.
"...Right." He inaudibly mumbled as he looked away. The doubt that crept into his voice was almost hard to miss.
"Look mon ami." Gambit prompted. His tone switching towards something serious and sincere rather than the usual laid back one he was known for. "I'm not askin' you to forget the X-Men. But holdin' on to us da way that you are doin' isn't da best way to remember us."
Logan could only remain silent as the former thiefs words sank in. He hated to admit it but he was right.
"I know makin' friends was always a hassle for you but try an' give em' a chance." The trench coat wearing man reasoned. "If I managed to grown on ya' then I'm sure they can right?"
The feral mutant narrowed his eyes at Gambit, still wanting to argue against his point. Or he atleast he tried to fish for something that he could argue with. Unfortunately he couldn't, Wolverine let out an inaudible small growl and sigh as he finally conceded with a nod.
"Alright cajun. I'll play it yer' way."
The kinetic powered mutant signature smile returned. "Glad dat your finally seein' it my way. I know you can do it mon ami, your da best at what you do after all."
With those parting words Gambit completely vanished. It reminded Wolverine that once again just like with Nightcrawler he was an image of his imagination. He could only frown sadly at the now empty spot. He knows he should be worried that his mind is playing tricks on him but its nothing he isn't used to at this point. If anything it was strangely comforting for him that he was able to talk them. Even if they were just projections of a traumatize mind. Though if anyone saw him talking to himself he would possibly be deemed certifiably insane. They would probably be right.
Wolverine couldn't help but snort at the morbid thought.
Unsheathing his claws he climbed up the nearby brick wall. He then prowled the rooftops and continued his patrol. He could see why Spider-Man and Daredevil did this. It sure gave a man a lot to think about.
"Ugh and he still thinks that I can't handle anything on my own!" Supergirl complained loudly though she kept her voice leveled to where it didn't become an angry screech.
The mess hall was heavily packed with many league member who were relaxing and eating their own tables while making idle chit chat with one another. Kara of course was sitting at her own table along with Green Arrow. The Emerald Archer was thankfully willing to listen to the young woman vent out her growing frustrations about her cousin. Out of everyone he was the most opinionated when it came to how the league handled certain situations. Always going on about keeping them honest.
Green Arrow plucked a grape into his mouth while listening to Supergirl rant and rave about Superman's protective tendencies. Or over protective tendencies based on how she was describing it.
She planted her elbow on the table and pressed her hand on her cheek with an irritated huff. "Rao! Its like he forgets that I'm the older cousin here!"
Chewing then swallowing the fruit Green Arrow mulled over anything he could think of to help the girl. "Hmm...Yeah I can where your coming from. You've shown that you have what it takes to play with grown ups."
Kara's eyes lit up as she smiled widely, feeling a sense of pride at the mans words. Atleast someone saw that she was capable!
"...But I can also where he's coming from."
Her smile dropped the second he said that. Destroying any sense of elation she just had.
"I know it looks like he's treating you like a baby that want their rattle but try to look at it from the big guys point of view." Oliver tried to elaborate, seeing how his previous statement upset her. "Your the only family he's got left so I can't blame him for being a little overzealous when it come to looking out for you."
She could only sigh at that. Looking down at her tray of spaghetti with a resigned expression. "I know that but..."
"Hey cheer up! We both know that Supes heart is in the right place as it usually is." Green Arrow acclamated, his blonde mustache shifting slightly upwards as he smiled brightly. "He only wants whats best for you."
A small feeling of annoyance throbbed in Supergirl's chest. The mans attempt at trying brighten her mood being unsuccessful as his words only had the opposite effect on her. Great! Another one of those "he knows whats best for you" claims she gotten tired of hearing at this point.
Kara looked up and gave a reluctant the archer a reluctant smile and nod.
He nodded back and finished the rest of his food, and leaned back in his seat. "So...had any of those spooky nightmares lately?"
She shook her head. "Thanfully I haven't had any since last week. Patching up singed holes in my ceiling was starting be a real pain."
Despite the levity of her words Oliver couldn't keep the concern from his face. "Are you sure we should keep your cousin in the dark about this?"
"He has bigger things to worry about other than my small problems. And besides he'll probably think I'll need a nightlight if I can't handle a couple of bad dreams."
Green Arrow wanted to press the matter further but held himself from doing so. He knew that arguing with the blonde Kryptonian would lead nowhere, knowing how bullheaded she can be it would result in her getting her way. From what she told him these seemed way beyond than just "a couple of bad of dreams".
Oliver could see through the strong facade she tried to keep up. It was clearly taking a toll on her and the fact she won't tell anyone else besides him was worrying. Even so he respected her boundaries on the matter.
"Alright." He conceded, gesturing his hand towards her. "If you want me to keep my blabber mouth shut I'll keep it that way."
Supergirl smiled appreciatevely at the archer. "Thanks Arrow."
"Anytime kiddo." He returned the grin, happy that he managed to lift her spirits even if it was just a little.
He then looked over her shoulder as something caught his eye. Or in actuality someone would be more accurate. Black Canary was leaning on the wall near the mess hall entrance, arms crossed while looking directly at Green Arrow. The teasing glint in hers eyes and coy smile was hard to miss. The blonde fighter gestured her head towards the entryway and sauntered out.
Taking that not so subtle invitation the archer immediately stood up from his seat. "Oh, uh sorry but I gotta go! Catch you later!"
Supergirl watched him nearly trip on his feet as he tried to hurriedly scamper out of the mess hall. She then siged heavily again and rested her fist on her chin staring listlessly at her spaghetti while absentmindedly poking the pasta with her fork. That conversation she had nearly made her lose her appetite.
Her thoughts drifting towards the discussion about her costant nightmares. Kara for the life of her couldn't understand why she was having them all of the sudden. While she should probably just accept them as nothing but dreams something about them just felt... oddly real. She shuddered at the memory of what occured in the dream. Ending the lives of random innocent individuals. And what scared her the most was that she enjoyed it.
These dreams thanfully weren't overly frequent but they would happen often enough. And waking up with two singed holes on your bedroom ceiling was was just as bad if not annoying. Thankfully Pa Kent never had a problem with patching them up. Bless that mans kind heart.
Supergirl also help but feel that there was more behind these dreams. Something that layed beneath it all that she wasn't seeing. It sounded crazy but her gut was telling her otherwise. But what?...
"That seat taken?"
The young woman blinked at the unexpected voice, breaking her from the thoughts that were plaguing her mind.
Looking up from her plate Kara was surprised to see that the Leagues newest member was standing over her table with a tray of food in his hands. Wolverine was his name right?
Remembering that he asked her if he could sit with her the Kryptonian gestured her hand towards the empty chair. "N-no it isn't! Feel free."
Peeling his mask off the man sat down and began scarfing down his tray full of lasagna from what she could see.
If she recalled Kara only briefly saw the man once or twice when he would be preparing for a mission but other than that she had never gotten an opportunity to truly meet him. There was also the gossip sorrounding him, most of it was negative. She knew that it would be within her best interest in ignoring it but being a teenage girl made it difficult for her to do so. But she wouldn't let that stop her for atleast trying to get to know the guy. After all you got to know your teammates.
"I ain't one to talk when it comes to bein' rude but I'm pretty sure starin' at someone while their eatin' would be considered just that." He muttered at the blonde heroine though his attention was still on his meal as he took a forkful bite.
Supergirl felt her cheeks heat up in embarrassment, her widened eyes quickly shifting back towards her spaghetti. "Er s-sorry!" Did she just stutter in front of the new guy?! What the hell?!
Wolverine looked up from his food, slowly chewing the lasagna in his mouth and swallowing it before inching his eyebrow upward at the girls jittery behavior. "You alright kid?"
"Yep! Just dandy!" She assured though tried tried to surpress a grimace at how hastily her words came out. Clearing her throat Supergirl decided to prompt a casual conversation.
"So...Wolverine. How do you like the League so far?"
He shrugged at the girl. "Its alright. This club house sure is dedicated though, I'll give ya that."
Supergirl smiled brightly at his somewhat positive opinion. It was good to see that despite the talks that surrounded him it didn't sour Wolverine's opinion on the Justice League.
"Whats with you and big blue? He yer' dad or somethin'?" The man bluntly asked while putting another piece of lasagna in his mouth.
Blinking the girl smile became a confused frown. "Hm?"
The Feral Mutant gestured his head at the red and blue uniform the two were known for wearing along with the 'S' symbol on her chest as the cape. Though hers was in the form of a long sleeved half top and skirt.
"Oh no he isn't! We're cousins actually."
"Huh. Gonna go out on a limb here and say that someone might've thought you were bird or a plane like him at some point right?"
She couldn't help but lightly snicker at that. "Pretty much, yeah. Anything that he can do I can do just as good!"
Wolverine furrowed his brow a little at her rather confident boast. Perhaps he was looking too deep into it but his gut was telling him that the kid meant more than just her abilities. Despite his short time with the League he was lucky enough to work with The Man Of The Steel. People wouldn't shut up about how he was the pinnacle of all heroes should aspire to be. Everyones eyes would always lit up even when he would casually stroll down the halls of Watchtower. At first he thought it was all just a bunch of hoopla and blind praise that he would ignore. But when he saw him in action for the first time in person he now understood why Superman was regarded with so much reverence.
Now he didn't know how the girl sitting across from him compared to her cousin he didn't know, he'll have to see it to believe it. But in the back of his mind he couldn't help think it wasn't much. Wolverine knew he shouldn't make assumptions about this girl he barely knew but he recognized the signs of a teenager wanting prove their mettle. Unfortunately the harsh reality of their inexperience always hit them in the face to show them that they aren't as good as think they are.
Wolverine instantly thought of Jubilee, how she always tried to prove to everyone that she was an X-Men by begging to go on dangerous missions. Though thankfully she realized that she way in over her head before it was too late. And since he offered to train her so can be better prepared for whatever came her way.
His heart clenched however as the image of her bloodied lifeless body cradled in his arms appeared in his mind. Everything he taught her couldn't ready her for someone like him.
...And it was because she wouldn't fight back against a friend. None of them would.
"WOLVERINE! PLEASE REPORT TO THE BRIEFING ROOM IMMEDIATELY! " The voice of J'onn J'onz commanded through the Watchtowers intercom.
He sighed as set his meal aside. Standing the man pulled his mask over his face. "See ya 'round kid."
"Yeah."
The man left threw his unfinished food in the trash and headed for the briefing room leaving the young girl alone to her thoughts. Her mind went back to that moment when she told him of her familial relations to Superman. His eyes had a distant and mournful look in them before becoming hardened and guarded once he was called.
'What was that about?' Supergirl mentally wondered. She then shook her head and cleared it. It would be best to think about that some other time.
She looked down at her plate for a moment and followed Wolverine's example of not finishing it. Disposing it the young Kryptonian walked out of the mess hall, deciding that maybe a casual stroll aroung the space station might could be a good idea.
As she walked Kara's couldn't but think about the previous arguments she and Clark had. Which was something she was trying trying to avoid but unfortunately her mind had to go and wander ruining her rather quiet walk.
She ruffled her hair, closed her eyes and clenched her teeth in frustration as she thought about the many times that Superman always got the final say it everything. "Rao dammit! How can someone with X-vision not see that I don't need to be babysat!" She exclaimed loudly in the hallway causing those who were strolling by her to give her odd and startled looks though the young woman ignored them.
She is just powerful as he is! And just as much of a hero as he is! If only just once she could just show him...
"So if anyone has any objections or wants to alter the plan speak now."
Speak of the devil. Kara saw the very man who was the source of her frustrations as of late and that he wasn't alone. With him were both Wonder Woman and Wolverine discussing a plan of strategy for a mission they were about to set out on. She looked at her surroundings and realized that she was standing in the javelin hanger bay. She must've been so deep in her own thoughts to not where she was walking.
Seeing this Supergirl hid behind a corner to observe the three.
"I see no reason for us to." Diana shrugged, not seeing an issue with how they proceeded with things. "If we don't deviate from it there shouldn't be any complications along the way."
Superman nodded and then looked to Wolverine.
"Got no complaints from me." He said dryly ready to get this mission done and over with.
Seeing that his teammates were ready to go Superman entered the javelin with the others walking in after him.
Kara watched the three with undevided interest. If Superman and Wonder Woman were joining Wolverine on a mission then it must be an important one!
In that instant she saw the the spacecrafts ramp slowly closing as it was about to take off.
Clicking her tounge and slightly narrowing her eyes Supergirl had only had a few seconds to make her choice. She soon did and in within a blink on of an eye a red and blue blur made it inside before the ramp closed completely shut.
The three arrived in Metropolis in just a short amount of time. Wolverine was almost willing to bet that the Watchtowers javelins could match the blackbird in travel speed. The spacecraft cloaking system was active as it stayed stationary in the air. Thankfully it wasn't in the field of airspace so that no unsuspecting plane would accidentally would crash into it.
The ramp opened revealing Superman, Wonder Woman, and Wolverine.
One of Metropolises notoroius criminal was doing an arms deal at the cities harbor tonight. John Corben Better known for his alias, Metallo. Whomever would be meeting for this deal was a mystery and someone to be very dangerous. From what Superman had told them these unknown people had arrived in Metropolis by boat anout two weeks ago, possibly smuggled in. And since then they had been in hiding.
Not to mention the exact time of when it would go down was anyones guess also. Thats why the three of them were meeting up with a contact. Both Superman and Wonder Woman seem to be on good terms with this contact so the Feral Mutant had no choice but to trust their judgement.
He remembered the plan that they went over in the Watchtower. One of the members of the mysterious group had been tailed for some time by their contact agreed to meet at the said harbor with his cohorts to join in on the arms deal. The challenge would be trying to find him. Thats where he came in. Their contact managed to swipe something from him that they could use to track him. Once his location was found either Superman, Wonder Woman Wolverine would go in hidden and get him alone so they could get the information they needed to know when it would go down so they can stop it before it happens.
"I know I shouldn't ask but do any of you want to review the plan?" Superman asked wanting to know that his teammates needed to go over anything they might've forgotten in regards to their roles.
The two shook their heads.
"Okay." He stepped near the edge of the ramp preparing to soar off towards their contacts meeting point.
However one of his teammates stopped him from taking a single inch from off the ground. "'Fore we go anywhere what should we do 'bout our stowaway?"
Both senior members turned to look at Wolverine with confusion written on their face.
"No point in hidin' anymore kid!" He called out, looking over his shoulder. "So why do you just come on out."
Superman and Wonder Woman looked behind the man and saw a shift of movement from behind one of the rear passenger seats. Tresses of blonde hair came into view and soon revealed the young female Kryptonian who looked embarrassed that she had been caught.
"Uh...hi." She awkwardly smiled and waved at the three.
Superman's eyes grew wide in surprise at the sight of his cousing sneaking aboard. Wonder Woman eyebrow arched in curiosity as to what she was doing here.
The man of steel then crossed his arms and gave her a scolding grimace. "I probably shouldn't ask this but I will anyway, what are you doing here?"
Supergirl involuntarily flinched at that tone he would use whenever he would catch her doing something she shouldn't have. However she stood her ground against her older cousin to explain why she was here.
"Whats it look like? I'm here to back you guys up!"
The blue and red clad man stroked the bridge of his nose in annoyance. Of course thats why she was here!
"And you knew was she on the javelin this whole time?!" He rounded on Wolverine glaring heatedly at him.
"Yup."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"No one asked." He answered with zero hesitation.
Superman sucked in a large breath to ease the ease the irritation in his chest. Once he did he dropped his cross expression and looked back at Kara.
"Supergirl please call J'onn to port you back to the Watchtower. This type of mission isn't for inexperienced junior members." He pleaded to her hoping that she would listen to reason.
"Oh come on!" She whined in protest. "You're always saying that I need better experience. What better way for me to get it than right now."
Clark shook his head and massaged his temple. He wasn't in the mood for this. He pressed his finger towards the commlink in his ear. "J'onn can you-"
The young blonde quickly ran up to him and grabbed his wrist stopping him from pursuing that call any further. "Superman just let me help! I promise I won't be a hindrance to anyone."
He was argue his point again but held the words in his throat as Wonder Woman gently put her hand on his shoulder.
"Let her come with us Superman." Wonder Woman camly said slightly in defense of the young girls position on the matter. "With Parasite and Metallo involved we have to assume that they will be expecting you and will be prepared. Any form of small aid will be valuable."
Superman took a moment to think about his friends words for a second. She was right about how when it comes to both Parasite and Metallo. They will most likely be ready for him and not mention they didn't know who will be arriving in Metropolis tonight for the weapons transaction. Resistance on that side would be the clear outcome.
The man sighed in resignation seeing as how he was in a no win situation here.
"Belay that order J'onn."
Kara smiled brightly at her cousin, happy that he was going to give her a shot on joining them on this mission. Her smile then completely fell into a frown when he suddenly gave her a stern look along with pointing his finger directly at her nose that made her inch her head back a bit.
"You can come but will stay close and follow my every order." He said with a great ounce of authority and finality in voice. "Am I clear?"
That was not what she wanted to hear as defiant anger coursed through her, and she couldn't help but let it show on her face.
Supergirl was about to speak but Clark's with eyes narrowing further kept her from saying anything else on the matter. He was practically daring her to challenge him on this.
She turned her head away and crossed her arms in a petulant manner. The young woman then begrudgingly nodded.
"Crystal." She in a low but restrained angered tone.
Superman could only shake his head in exasperation, seeing as how that precious time had been wasted. He flew out of the cloaked javelin, taking the position as leader so that the others could follow.
Kara glanced at the warrior heroine and quietly mouthed a 'thank you'.
Wonder Woman smiled and nodded at her before taking off after the Kryptonian.
Letting out a heavy breath Kara loosened her shoulders to get rid of the tension in her body so she can focus on the mission. This was her big chance! Her time to show Superman that she doesn't need him holding her hand anymore.
Turning to the man next to her she gave him a wide toothy smile, ready to get the mission started. "So, can you fly?"
"Know any Wolverines that can?" He rhetorically asked back with a cocked eyebrow.
Can't say that I ever have." Supergirl laughed lightly at the mans remark. "Well theres only one way we can fix that!"
Before Wolverine could say anything the young girl stepped behind him and grabbed hold of his sides. He almost let out a startled yelp as he then found himself being lifted off the ground with ease. The two were then flying closely behind the two senior members. He had to remind himself to catch his breath despite moving many high stories in the air.
"Might wanna warn a guy next time!" He hotly glared over his shoulder as he loudly grumbled to the girl carrying him.
She gave him a sheepish smile. "My bad."
Wolverine could only sigh and shake his head at the girls antics. She was definitely eager, that much was obvious. If that small argument she and Superman was any indication of that. He just hoped that she wouldn't get so excited to a point where she would drop him before they reached their destination.
He casted his eyes downward and just admired the city below to past the time. From what he could see of Metropolis's infrastructure at least when it came to its buildings is that the majority of them were glass highrises. Skyscrapers, Corporate buildings and so many others practically filled the place. Even from up here it was almost overwhelming. One could easily feel like there on the top of the world here.
"Enjoying the view?" Supergirl asked over the mild sound of rushing wind. Thankfully none of them were flying at an extremely fast pace so he wouldn't get disoriented.
"Its not bad." Logan answered, still gazing at the sprawling buildings surrounding them as him as they flew by. "Ain't much of a city person but this place sure looks like an eye catcher."
"It definitely leaves an impression." The young woman smiled delightfully at the city of Metropolis. She remembered how she took in amazing sights that the city had to offer. "The shopping malls and the parks are the best hotspots to checkout. Oh! And the hot dogs here are to die for!"
Wolverine felt the corners of his mouth lightly tug upward as he listened to her gush about the mundane pleasures of Metropolis. It reminded him that even though she can reduce any of these building structures to a pile of rubble she was still just a kid at the end of the day. Full of so much life that it can soften up any old mans heart.
Just like Jubilee...
His lips slowly pulled themselves downwward, his mood souring as he thought of his friend/student again. Why was he trying to compare her to Supergirl?
'Look at me. Already tryin' t' fill that damn void.'
He couldn't help how pathetic he felt. Even though Gambit (or a subconscious image of him) told him that he wouldn't be replacing them by doing that but it was hard for him think othetwise. Because in all honesty he didn't have the right.
"There she is!"
Superman loudly called out to his teammates which he was thankful for. He couldn't afford to be in his own self made pit of woes right now. He needs to stay on mission.
One of the many buildings came into clear view but this one stood out from the others. The huge spherical globe like structure at the top was the most eyecatching thing about it. The label that read 'Daily Planet' was curled around it. A woman could be seen on the roof. The contact was a middle aged brunette dressed in a purple blazer and slacks.
Once they landed the woman lightly glared at The Man Of Steel while her finger tapped the watch on her wrist. "You're about five seconds late. I never thought such a thing could be even possible." She reprimanded though with the amused way it was said and teasing smile on her face told told them that she wasn't being serious.
"Good evening Lois." He apologized with good natured grin. "Sorry about that. We were a bit held up."
Superman gave his cousin a brief look as the argument they had was still a little fresh in his mind. She ignored it however and pretended as if he wasn't there.
Lois saw this and she had to guess that things were still tense between them. She wanted to know why she was even here, considering that she was not notified about her being on this mission but held off on asking anything. After all there were here for a reason.
"Well since everyone is here and accounted for lets get down to businesses."
Lois pulled out three photo frame from her pocket and showed it to everyone.
"As some of you know me and a trusted co worker of mine have been working on this story for some time." She explained to the group, casting a subtle glance at the blue and red clad hero. He silently nodded at her. "These were taken just about two days ago near the city pier. Thankfully Jimmy got a good shot of the guy."
She gave them to Wonder Woman to inspect. Her eyes furrowed as she tried to make the person in the photo. She could make out a short sleeved tight black shirt that highlighted his muscular physique, along with a pair of green cargo pants and boots.
The unfortunate thing was the ski mask he wore to hide his face.
"He seems military. Possibly of the mercenary variety?" She tried to discern as she handed the pictures to Superman for him to look over."
"Guess is as good as mine Diana." The reporter shrugged. "The best clues I can scrounge up is that this guy is involved with some professional group thats been keeping it low in Metropolis for quite some time."
"And since Lexcorp had cut ties with all of the arms group contractors they had on their payroll its safe to assume that whoever he's working with are from somewhere far." Superman speculated, rubbing his chin in thought.
Ever since Lex Luthor's former chauffeur Mercy Graves had taken control of the company after his election in office she had been using its resources to better the city. Though unlike Luthor it was through honest and legal means.
"The only thing I have on him is this. Good thing he dropped when I was following him." Lois held up an orange piece of torn clothing material with a with a series of numbers written on it. "Obvious its from a prison jumpsuit. I can try an find which prison this came from and look into their inmate records. But that'll take to much time.
"Won't need to."
The brunette turned to the man in the yellow and blue jumpsuit who was leaning on the roofs wall, arm crossed with possibly the heaviest and crudest scowl she'd ever seen.
She arched an eyebrow at him. "And whys that?"
"Give it here." He rudely demanded without much explanation. His hand was stretched out and motioned it so the woman could hand over the small piece of evidence.
A reluctant look came across her face as she was hesitant to give this guy the prison tag. His eyes narrowed at her and a small growl of impatience was heard making her tense.
She felt a pair of hands of gently grab hold of her shoulders. Looking behind her the brunette saw her husband nod with an expression of assurance. Taking a deep calming breath she placed the piece of torn clothing in the mans open palm though in a somewhat harsh manner. Since he didn't give her the best first impressions Lois felt that she might aswell return the favor.
Wolverine gave it a couple of short whiffs. Once he had the scent remembered he walked around the roof top and flared his notrils at the air trying to track their target.
Lois just looked at him strangely. "Uhh...why is your friend over there sniffing around like a lost dog?" She whispered to Superman.
"Hehe. Lets just say Wolverine's got a reliable nose."
He aimed his nose in multiple directions, trying to get a beat on this guys scent. While Metropolis was a heavily crowded city the smell that Woleverine had gotten was very distinct. Traces of what smelled like a chemical compound. It was small that he almost but it was there.
His eyes slightly widen when that familiar smell entered his nose. He jogged up to the ledge that was facing the eastern part of area and let out a hard whiff. The scent was much stronger now.
"I got it! Scents comin' in from over there." He said, pointing out to the row of tall buildings.
The four looked out into the distance.
"Are you sure?" Kara asked uncertainly.
"The nose always knows kid. All we gotta do is follow the scent and it'll lead us to where our boy is."
Superman nodded at the simple and effective method of fiding the man. "Wolverine you lead us to his current location. That way we can corner him and get the information we need."
He then turned to Lois and smiled appreciatively at her. "Thank you for your help Lois."
She returned it. "Its no problem at all. You guys just make sure get out of there in one piece."
They were ready to leave but Lois saw that the yellow and blue clad guy turned towerds her. "By the way you wouldn't happen t' be Lois Lane right?"
The brunette arched an eyebrow at the short burly man. She crossed her arms and silently nodded.
"Read some o' yer materiel in the papers. Gotta say you do good work, one could say that you get a front row seat of the action considerin' how detailed it all is."
Superman and Wonder Woman just blinked at the unexpected rare compliment. Lois couldn't help but give him a slight agape look, her initial impression of him suddenly shifting to something more positive.
She then found her voice. "Oh uh thanks I guess."
Wolverine then turn to his teammates who were still giving him stunned looks. "The hell're waitin' for, christmas?! Lets get a move on already!"
That snapped everyone out of their daze. The four took off for their destination.
The stake out had been going smoothly. Wolverine's keen nose had led them to one of Metropolises districts that attracted those who wanted to enjoy the cities late nightlife. Colorful lights flashed repeatedly through out the area with people mingling with each other.
Superman and Wonder Woman positioned themselves in the sky where front entrance was. Wolverine and Supergirl were on a building adjacent to the club where back door was near. This way which ever door their target chooses to leave out of they would nab him either way.
Superman scanned the clubs interior with his x-ray vision active just in case he spotted anyone who resembled anything in the photo that showed them.
He heard a small sigh next to him. He briefly glanced at Diana saw how she was keeping her attention on the building but the way her brow was knitted with her eyes appearing distant as if warrior heroines mind was somewhere else. Now that he thought about it she did seem to off in her own world even when he was debriefing them on their plan before coming here. Whatever was on her mind must be really gnawing at her.
Deciding to take his chance Superman thought that it couldn't hurt to ask his friend what was bothering her. If only to get her mind off of it so her mission performance wouldn't be affected.
"Is something the matter Diana?" He asked with small twinge of concern in his voice before returning his attention back the building. The man grinned as he tried to lighten her mood a little. "I know stake outs aren't the most enganging, especially for people like us. But I like to believe that over the years we've gotten better at it."
She blinked as Superman's words slowly registered in her head. Once they did she couldn't resist the light churtle that came out of her.
"I'd say we have. Bruce would be proud with our progress wouldn't you agree?"
"Knowing him he'd probably say we still need more practice in that area."
The two shared a laugh at the hypothetical scenario as they imagined how the detective would still find a way to chastise them both in one of his areas of expertise. Once they simmered down Diana appeared thoughtful, internally debating she should tell what has been troubling her. It didn't take her long to decide on telling him.
"Kal? Can I have your honest opinion on something?" Wonder Woman asked with a little bit of hesitancy.
"Sure."
"Do you consider me and the rest of the league as a family?"
Clark couldn't help but be surprised at the Amazons question. He arched an eye row as he tried to understand what she was getting at. "What do you mean?"
"Lately I've been wondering if everyones connection is strictly professional or perhaps something more beyond that." She clarified before letting out a drawn out sigh. Crossing her arms the woman turned her head to the man and continued. "I'd like to know what you think."
"Hmmm...here's how I see it. Whether there is a familial bond or not you can't deny that we all have each others backs regardless right?" He explained getting a confirming nod from Wonder Woman. "All that truly matters is that everyone in the league is willing to stand by one another no matter what comes our way. Maybe it isn't a family bond but it's a bond nonetheless."
The warrior heroine felt her friends words slowly ease her mind, dispelling the doubt she had wrestling with. Kal's opinion on the matter held strong merit and truth. Everyone in the League within their own circle had strong bonds with each other. And no one knew one of their teammates on a personal level they would fight side by side with all of their hearts.
And she couldn't completely say that they lacked a certain type family relationship. J'onn saw the rest of the senior members as his new family. Green Lantern treated Flash like a big brother. And she always saw Kal as the brother she never had.
They were a family in their own unique way.
Wonder Woman's face lit up in a slow gentle smiled. The gods had truly blessed her to have a friend like Kal, Bruce, and the others.
"I really needed to hear that." She expressed kindly. "Thank you."
"Happy to help but I can't help but ask, what brought this on?" He inquired with natural curiosity. "It isn't like you question our group dynamic."
She firmly nodded at that. "Lately I've been thinking about what Logan once told me."
That made Superman shoot a glance at the man she just mentioned who was perched on the building with Kara. "And what exactly did he tell you?"
"That none of us can ever replace the strong bond he had with his former team." Diana answered, looking at the aforementioned man from afar with empathy. "And I couldn't deny that he was correct about that."
Clark mirrored her expression as he now understood why she seemed so distracted. "You want him know that he doesn't have to feel alone and that he has a place among everyone in the League."
"Yes I do. You and me both know what its like to not where we belong in the world until we found it."
The Kryptonian couldn't but sigh at her almost accurate comparison of Wolverine's dilemma. A man from another world now on earth not knowing what his future holds in his new home. The similarities were almost hard to ignore.
"The best thing we can do for him on that front is by giving him time Diana." Superman said, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It could take awhile but he needs to come to us at his own pace and choice. Hes been through a lot before coming here."
The warrior heroine begrudgingly nodded at his advice.
"We got him!" Supergirl exclaimed loudly over their comms bringing both of their focus back to the mission.
Wonder Woman reached up to her communicator. "Good work! We'll be there shortly."
The two headed over to the rear of the club where they found their target struggling on the ground where Wolverine had him restrained and pin.
"Get off me you bastard!" He crudely hissed at his assailant as he tried to wring himself free.
Wolverine pressed his body down harder, keeping his knee planted on his spine along with his left elbow on his neck and right hand holding his head. "We got questions and you got answers. So why don't you try and make this easy for everyone here huh?"
Twisting him around on his back the Feral Mutant put his fist under chin. "When will you and yer boys be at the docks when the deal with Intergang goes down?! You've til I count t' three t' gimme an answer. One."
His index claw shot out making the target gasp aloud as he started to sweat in fear. Though he still held silent, unwilling to give Wolverine the info.
"Two."
The third claw came out. Whisking against his mask as it tore the fabric and some strands of hair along with it. He still kept quiet however.
Wolverine narrowed his eyes to a dangerous degree. "Y'know what come after two right?" He growled out rhetorically as the middle slowly inched its way up to his chin. The tip making contact with intently clear on piercing through the skull.
"Heh, do your worst." The masked mercenary spat out defiantly, a taunting smirk forming on his face. "You won't get anything out of me so just get on with it!"
'Course he'd be a blind loyalist.' Wolverine mentally groaned with annoyane. 'Death ain't gonna scare him to the point where he'll talk.'
"Allow me." Wonder Woman suddenly insisted.
He looked at his teammate with a skeptical glare. Given that he couldn't get him to loosen his tongue what made her think she can? However she seemed confident that she could do it. Seeing that they were low on time Wolverine stepped aside.
Wonder Woman approached while reaching for her hip where a golden tether was holstered. The warrior heroine skillfully tossed it allowing the rope to bind itself around him.
"When will your cohorts arrive at the harbor for the weapons transaction?"
Once she uttered that demand the lasso glowed bright. The mans eyes then fell into a trance.
"At ten pm." He robotically said.
Wolverine arched his brow in surprise at how easily Wonder Woman just got the answer out of him without any effort. He glanced at the rope as it seemed to be causing him to be the obvious reason for it.
"Who is the one leading your group?"
The lasso shined as the man tried in vain to resist its influence. "Bane."
Superman gave a heavy frown in question. Bane was in Metropolis? Why would he need an arsenal of military graded weaponry supplied to him?
"For what purpose would Bane need these weapons?" Diana strongly parroted Clark's thought, lightly tugging on her lasso.
"To tip the edge in our favor with our war with The League of Assassins."
"I remember Batman telling me that there was secret underground war happening in Gotham right now." Everyone turned their attention to The Man Of Steel who had an sudden look of realization on his face. "Now it all make sense..."
"What does?" Supergirl tilted her head at her cousin.
"How I wasn't able to search for Bane." He explained. "He must've been using one of Lexcorps old warehouses for cover. And since their all lined with led I wouldn't have been able to spot him."
"It would've also given him ample time to figure out your patrol routes." Wonder Woman said.
"And it gave him a better opportunity to prepare for you!" The mercenary jeered tauntingly. "You've gotten me but Intergang and Bane will be waiting! So I wouldn't get too exci-"
A hard blue gloved fist slugged him in the jaw instantly knocking the masked man unconscious.
"I think we'll manage." Logan said with a monotone drawl.
Supergirl flinched uncorfortably at that. "Jeez...are you normally this intense?"
"Only when I'm not havin' a good drink." He replied.
"In any case we have what we needed to know." Wonder Woman holstered her lasso. "Let's head to the pier."
Wolverine scouted every corner of the pier, at least from ground level. The others kept an eye for their visitors from the skies. Though while the two seniors members were searching for Intergang and Bane's crew from seperate locations of the pier Superman had ordered Supergirl to stick close to him.
She fiercly objected to that of course but her cousin got the final say so. Superman said that the two of them could cover more ground that way but Logan knew he wanted him to keep an eye on her. And he had a strong feeling that she was aware of it also.
Hell, maybe that was for the best. Since being assigned on this mission with Wonder Woman the unspoken bit of tension between them that he created was kept cropping up. Though thankfully they both ignored it for the sake of being professional. Wolverine also overheard their conversation about where he belonged in in the League. If he felt like a jackass before than he certainly did even more so now. These people just wanted to help and he wasn't making it easy for them.
"These guys sure like to take their time don't they?" An annoyed groan came from Supergirl. He looked up and saw the young blonde sitting atop of a shipping container appearing bored out of her mind.
"Don't get comfortable kid!" He harshly chastised while peering around the corner she was situated on. "These guys could come anytime and get the drop on us when we least expect it."
She rolled her eyes and leaned back with her hands supporting her weight. "Oh come on! Superman and me have dealt with Metallo before and kicked his ass so many times I've lost count. And Bane's just a crook in a wrestlers mask who's hooked on drugs from what I've heard. I'm sure you can take him with no problem at all!"
Wolverine could only lightly growled at her dismissal of the severity of the mission. "Still, things can go either way no matter how much of a beatin' you and big blues been given him. And this Bane guy kept tabs on him for weeks so its safe t' guess hes already hatched up a back up plan in case we showed up."
"If you say so." She off handedly replied with a shrug.
Wolverine shook his head in disbelief. He suspected that she was overconfident but not to a degree where she wouldn't take the situation seriously depending on the enemy they would face. Now he understood why Superman didn't want her on this mission.
And he was the one the who has to keep an eye on her. Great.
"So...your really from another earth huh?" Supergirl tried to prompt in an attempt to stave off the boredom she was feeling.
The man couldn't help but sigh at the girls attempt to try small talk with him. "Shouldn't you be keepin' a look out and not yappin'?"
"I should but its only going to be an hour for them to show up. That way we've got time to chat and get to know each other. " She straightened her posture settling her chin in her hands. Eyes shined with interest and curiosity along with a bright smile. "So is it true?"
Logan slumped his shoulders in defeat. She wasn't going to leave him alone about this unless he answered her.
Deciding to let the young woman indulge in her questioning at least for the time being The Feral Mutant leaned on the metal container, crossed his arms and nodded though he made sure to keep a watchful eye through this area. "Yeah, I am."
"Wow! So what everyone was saying about you was right!" Supergirl exclaimed in amazement. "So what was it like on your earth?"
"Almost like this one believe it or not."
Supergirl had gathered that much. In her short time on earth she was lucky enough to have met many people who came from seperate earths and some from different periods in time.
"So just like your earth it must've had its own type of Justice League right Wolverine?" She asked what was the most logical question.
"Mhm, you could say that." He answered in a low barely audible tone. The Averngers were the mightiest of his worlds protectors.
...Or at least they were before everything had happened.
"Yes! I knew it!" She cheered while pumping her fist. "So were you apart of this team?"
"No...I was on another."
"Oh? What were they like?"
His stomach lurched and a massive pang exploded in his chest from that very question. Wolverine's teeth clenched against each other and his fingers tightened on his bicep to a point where he could've stopped the blood flow in his arm as his body shook with waves of bitter anger.
He didn't aim it at her however. After all it was an innocent question. He directed it towards himself.
He got his breathing under control and tried to keep his voice even. "They were uncanny. But much more than that."
Supergirl blinked at how heavy the mans voice sounded. Like he was trying to stop something from seeping through so that she wouldn't hear it.
"They taught and showed me that I could be more than what I am and still fightin' with t' this day." A rueful chuckle was heard that caught Supergirl off guard. "Guess that makes me a bad student huh?"
Kara didn't know how to respond to that. She sensed that there was something hidden under what he was saying even though he was being extrmely vague.
She opened her mouth to ask what he meant by that but both of their communicators bleeped.
"They've arrived just a few shorts clicks west from where you two are." Superman stated to them.
"Whaddaya want us to do when when we get there?"
"Keep your heads low until I give the signal." He advised.
Wolverine grunted in affirmation. He gestured his head at Supergirls so she could follow him.
The two found both of them standing across one another at a respectful distance in a secluded area of the harbor. He remebered Superman had labled Metallo as a half man half machine and front what he was looking at he wasn't exaggerating on that front. His entire upper torso was nothing but a robotic exoskeleton. The right side of his face was the only thing that had what appeared to be organic flesh.
The other was a tall man who wore an overcoat. The most recognizable thing about him was the luchador mask he donned. Accompanying him were three armed men behind who were no doubt hired muscle.
Wolverine quickly grabbed Supergirl's arm and pulled her around one of the nearby shipping containers so they could remain hidden. He looked up seeing that both Superman and Wonder Woman were above, keeping themselves out of sight.
The Feral Mutant raised his finger to his lips, gesturing the young blonde to be quiet for the time being until it was their time to strike.
'Terrific...more waiting.' Supergirl metally thought with an irritated groan that she showed on her face. Wolverine ignored it and watched the exchange.
"Thought there'd be five of you." The cyborg said, noticing the obvious low number of hired guns behind Bane.
The masked criminal crossed his arms. "Unfortunate but it won't impede our deal I assume?"
The flesh and blood side of his face sharply smirked. "Of course not! Right this way." He motioned for them to follow him.
Metallo lead Bane and his men to a shipping container that was locked. The cyborg dug his hands into metal surface of the doors and effortlessly pried them off its hinges as they were tossed aside. Inside were an assortment of high quality firepower.
Ranging from handguns, submachine, rpgs and more.
"I can now say that I made the right choice in contacting you Mr Corben." Bane said with gratification as he picked up and examined each and every gun inside.
"And I hope I can say the same when it comes to the payment on your end?"
"Of course."
One of his men took that as that as his cue to drop the duffle bag he was carrying. Metallo opened it revealing a large sum of cash, he blew out a whistle at the amount he was given.
His face then softened in relief. 'Hopefully this is enough...'
Supergirl was growing increasingly ansty with impatience. What was taking Clark so long to give the signal? It would be best to make their move now while they had the element of surprise! She looked upward to see that he was just looking around pier for whatever reason. She shook her head and decided to act, sure she'll get an earful from him but better to worry about that later.
Seeing that they were now loading the guns onto a freighter Supergirl charged into action.
She didn't get much further as someone yanked her hard by the leg pulling her back.
Whirling her hear around she saw Wolverine giving her a look that was a mix of anger and incredulity.
"The hell're you doin?!" He whispered with a hiss. "We gotta wait for Superman's order!"
"The longer we do that we lose the only advantage we have right now! So let me go!"
She wriggled her leg free and launched herself straight for Mettalo. Supergirl heard her teammate yell out a 'Kid wait!' but paid it no heed.
Suddenly something landed on top of her and for reasons she couldn't understand she felt her beginning to leave her body. Supergirl deeply groaned as her eyes became lidded as she was starting to get heavily lightheaded. She lost control of her flight path and and brought down to the ground skidding across it making chunks of concrete kick up in the air. She crashed into three stacks of shipping containers toppling them over.
Metallo just casually shrugged. "Heh, and I thought the piers were supposed to be quiet at this time of night."
"Supergirl!"
Superman darted for his cousin but was struck by beam of jade green light. He cried loudly in pain and crashed hard into the ground cracking it.
"And what do you know. Looks like things are going to get even louder."
The cyborg slowly strolled towards the downed hero who was struggling to pick himself up. The green rays of light that was shining on him from Metallo's open chest plate came from the rock embedded in it kept The Man Of Steel on his knees as he was struggling to rise to his feet.
"Its so hard to find good help these day wouldn't you agree Superman?" Metallo lowered himself grabbing his hair and lifted his head to look him in the eyes which were already forming bags under them.
To his surprise he smirked and laughed. "Oh I wouldn't say that."
He blinked confusedly at that only to recieve a powerful red boot to the back of his head that sent him flying several meters.
Wonder Woman lifted Superman to his feet only for her instinctively raised her arms to continously block the multitude of gunfire that was being sent her way. She narrowed her eyes in intense concentration, keeping track of the barrage of bullets that Bane and his men sent her way as she deftly used her bracers to defend against the assault.
Something silently dropped in between two of the hired guns but what caught their eye was silver blur that swooshed through their assault rifles. They were shocked as a split second later the guns crumpled into three cleanly cut separate pieces that clacked to the ground.
Wolverine roared with an upward strike slashing the man across his chest. Using that momentum he lightly spun around and pierced the other mercenaries thigh. He yelled in pain and dropped to his knee giving the Logan the oppurtunity grab his head throwing him towards his companion knocking him and Bane down to the ground.
The last gunman opened fire on him to which Wolverine responded by pouncing on him, growling he sliced the gun and sunk his other clawed fist into his shoulder. The pain was to much to the point he lost consciousness.
"Go and help her!" He yelled at the two eliciting a nod from both of them. Superman and Wonder Woman rushed to assist their young companion.
'I knew I should've sent her back to the Watchtower!" Superman chastised himself for not making that initial decision in keeping her out of this.
The pile of shipping containers exploded into the air stopping the two senior members mid flight. Superman's eyes widened at the sight of an unconscious Kara being held loosely by her cape. The Kryptonians scowled heavily with protective fury as his eyes lit up with blazing red heat at who was holding her.
"Put her down now Parasite!"
"Sure thing. I pretty much got everything I needed out of her anyway."
The purple skinned absorber casually flung her aside as if she were nothing but disposable trash. Diana caught her in her arms before she hit the ground and gently set her down. The warrior heroine saw that she was breathing, labored but still breathing. Relief flooded in her knowing that she was still alive.
She glared at Parasite furiously. "I hope for your sake that you took enough energy to spare. Believe me, you will need it."
"Trust me sweetie." He remarked with a smirk setting his eyes on Wolverine. "With you and Superman here it'll be long before I get my desert."
"Then we'd better finish this before you ask for seconds."
Superman rushed Parasite before he could react delivering mighty straight punch that sent him flying out from the pier and across bodies of water. He went after him to keep their fight away from the city, given that he syphoned Kara's abilities he couldn't risk it.
Wonder Woman eyes widened as a shipping container was being flown right at her. Quickly she flew up and caught it but grunted as its weight somehow increased knocking her back down to ground level.
"Never took any of you for one to take a cheap shot." Metallo said with mild surpise, pinning her down with the nearly flattened container. A taunting smirk made it way to the right side of his face. "I might not be one of Luthor's fans but maybe he got a point about the Justice League after all."
Not wanting to hear anymore of that Diana lifted the container off of her making the cyborg lose his footing. She then tossed it far and just like Superman she followed after him taking her battle to a more secluded area of the pier...
"Guess its just us now huh?" Wolverine said, glaring at the masked criminal who was standing unflinching in front of him. "Come quietly and maybe I'll let you walk on outta here with just a scratch."
'So far this guy hasn't shown me anythin' special yet but somethin' tells me he ain't no pushover. Usually when my claws are out theres always a smell o' fear...but I'm gettin' nothin' from him.
"Hehe I'm afraid I can't comply with your kind request." Bane replied brushing the dirt off of his shoulder.
He glanced down at his defeated men. Despite the gashes and impale wounds they were still alive as from what he could see the man hit any vitals. "Impressive, you managed defeat my men within a short amount of seconds. What do they call you?"
"They call me the Wolverine!"
"Wolverine? An animal that is praised for its ferocity but mainly its courage." Bane shrugged off his coat revealing plastic tubes that ran down his arms and were connected towards the back of his head. "I am Bane! Let us see if you can live up to your moniker!"
He turned a dile on his wrist causing green liquid to flow through the tubes. Bane growled between clenched teeth as he felt his muscles begin to expand and enlarge themselves to a point his veins were visible and bulging.
Wolverine raised an eyebrow at what he was witnessing as he took a couple of cautionary step back. Not only were his muscles growing but his body size grew considerably to a nearly inhuman degree. He gazed up at the muscle bound behemoth of a man who could no doubtedly break anyone in half without so much as trying.
"Well...someones been eaten their beef." He said dryly with a deadpaned expression.
Bane could give him a tooth smirk as he slowly raised leg and shoved foward with all of his his might landing his boot square in his torso. Logan's eyes grew wide as he felt the force of blow knock the air out of his body as he was flung away landed hard on his back. The Feral Mutant coughed out a large wad of spittle at the ground as he tried to breath. Good to know roided those muscles weren't just for show.
"Come hombrecito!" Bane loudly beckoned, spreading his massive arms out. "Show me what the Wolverine is truly made of!"
He felt his inner beast rage within him from being challenged by the masked criminal to a point where Wolverine couldn't contain his snarl. He spranged to his feet then roared as he charged the larger man. Bane brought his fist down in attempt to halt him but Wolverine saw this coming and hopped to the side to avoid it. Seeing that his left his side was exposed Wolverine slashed it drawing blood from him. Bane winced and reflexively swung his fist in an effort to take his head off his shoulders but Logan ducked it. From his crouching position leapt off the ground and rammed the top of skull at the base of Banes chin making him sharply jerk his head back.
Still in mid air The Feral Mutant was about to sink both of his claws into his chest but Bane recovered quickly and countered by grabbing both of his wrist in a tight monstrous vice grip. Seizing his chance The Masked Criminal drove his knee directly into his sternum. The force of the blow made Wolverine recoil as he felt like he was struck by an oncoming boulder. It was powerful enough to launch him above his head though Bane still held onto his wrist. Using the momentum Bane twisted around with a mighty war cry and brought Wolverine down hard on the concrete cracking it with his whole body and leaving an imprint.
Stumbling back Bane gingerly touched the wound that marked his ribs. He narrowed his eyes in surprise at the wound he recieved.
'Even the sharpest of blades struggle cutting my skin. The venom makes my muscles dense enough to prevent that...I must be careful against those claws.'
"That all you got bub?" Wolverine goaded, stood in a slumped manner but the blood caked smirk present on his face showed that he wasn't out of the fight yet. "Because I got all night."
"My sentiments exactly."
The two enganged again in their battle which one would describe as a brutal vicious brawl. Both men went back and forth at each other landing blows on the other without stopping. And when one would block or evade they kept up the up the pressure without giving neither room to breath.
Bane's massive size didn't bely his agility and speed. His reflexes were quick and not to mention he had skill. He wasn't a dumb brute that mindlessly through haymakers he knew what blows to use and where to land them. And when they did his bones rattled though he toughed it out so he wouldn't give Bane the advantage of grabbing hold of him.
Wolverine on the other hand despite being smaller had some surpringly strong as he felt the blow of his elbows land on his jaw. He was nimble, dodging mostly what he threw at him. It was clear that he was experienced at fighting opponents that outmatched him when it came to size and strength. His claws were the main thing he kept note of. He managed give him a couple of scars but it wasn't anything he could handle what worried him was fact that they could rasil pierce his body or cut off any limb from despite being enhanced by the venom.
And he had to make sure to keep him away from the tubes that directed the venom in his body. Bane had no doubt that he had already figured out that he needed to sever the tubes. Thankfully he had no long ranged weaponry so all he had to do was keep his eyes on him and make sure he doesn't mount on top of his back.
What was puzzling that no matter how many hits he dealt to him the man continued to keep fighting back. The attacks he delivered were strong enough to snap any bone into pieces but he didn't show any signs of having any broken bones at all. The
Wolverine crossed his arms in front of his face, blocking a massive punch from Bane that sent him across the area. He rolled back on to his feet and looked up in time to see the masked criminal reaching out for him.
Before get a hold of him The Feral Mutant launched both of his arms forward punching his claws through his hands. Bane groaned in pain but still pushed his advantage by pressing his weight down even further.
Wolverine gritted his teeth as he felt the muscles in his arms being strained as he tried everything he could to push him back. It was a pointless effort due to the fact that Bane was the stronger of the two.
He dropped to his knee within six seconds. His brow furrowed deeply as he tried to keep himself on his feet. Even as he struggled against this Logan could feel his wild side wanting to be released and show his opponent who the superior beast was in this bout. He needed to keep a hold on his self control but the longer this fight lasted he didn't know how long he would be able to hold on.
Seeing one option out of this situation Wolverine sheethed his claws causing Bane to lose his balance and trip on his on own feet. Seizing his oppurtunity he popped claws and impaled them in his abdomen making his opponent cry out intense pain. Logan used every ounce of muscle in his legs, he growled as he hefted the larger man over his back. With all of his might he threw him on his back.
Wolverine turned and stepped back to see lying on the ground holding his gut as he tried to put pressure on his wound. He took this oppurtunity to calm his inner beast. And judging from that injury he'll be out for quite awhile.
A loud crash erupted behind him. He looked over his shoulder and saw Metallo crawling out the crater that he had landed into. Wonder Woman landed behind him still maintating narrowed focused eyes on her cybernetic opponent as they stood back to back.
"You holdin' up alright?" He asked his teammate who appeared to be no worse for wear.
"I'm well for the most part." She glanced back at him briefly before returning it back to Metallo. "And you?"
"Still got some gas left in the tank." He replied gruffly keeping his attention on Bane. "How long til big blues done with his business?"
"It shouldn't be long for him to return. Parasite can only hold on to the power he leeches for a short peried of time." Wonder Woman reported evenly.
He nodded. "Uh huh. And what about the kid?"
"Still unconscious but fine."
Bane groaned as picked himself up, still grasping his midsection. He let out heavy breaths as his wound was troubling him greatly. He doubt Wolverine pierced his internal organs but blood loss was something he couldn't afford. He felt fury at the fact that he needed to retreat and mend his injuries. He hated having to leave a fight unfinished but right now he had no choice.
Reaching for a device attached to his rear waist Bane activated it. Now all he has to do is buy some time.
Metallo's body was littered with multiple dents and a dismantled arm, his last very long against these two. He looked at his buyer who gave him a nod which he returned.
The cyborg bolted for the shipping container that held the weapons inside. Diana's eyes widened and immediately drew her lasso. She threw it but unfortunately he rolled out of the way before it could wrap around him. Reaching it grabbed a flashbang grenade he tossed it between Wolverine and Wonder Woman blinding them in a flash of light. Both of them had no choice but to cover their eyes as well as stunned from the loud ringing. Wolverine felt nauseous and disoriented, his heightened senses having been negativly effected from the grenade.
The sound of a rotor was getting closer to their location. Wolverine opened his eyes, though blurry he could see helicopter with a cable connected to a magnet. It was attached to the weapon filled with weapons shipping container.
He was also able to make out Bane and Metallo aboard the chopper. Seeing that they were about to escape Logan shook his head and bolted after them before they got a chance to take off.
Once he was atop the shipping he climbed the cable. He popped his claws to cut the cable. He might've not been able to stop them but he can atleast make sure that they can't get their hand on these weapons.
"Oh no you don't!" Bane muttered, shambling over to a rifle that was stored in the back. "You may have bested me tonight hombrecito, but this victory will be mine to take!"
He aimed and rained a multitude of rapid fire down on him. Wolverine grunted in agony as he felt his body being pelted by bulletes. His grip on the magnets cable slackened as he could barely keep hold of the cable.
A few bullets later Wolverine lost his grip and fell.
Bane snorted as he watched the man fall and hit the ground below. "Next time Wolverine...next time."
Wolverine groaned as he groggly sat up. He narrowed his eyes in anger while watching the two escaping with the weapons.
"Wolverine!"
The familiar voice of Supergirl was heard. He let out an 'oomph' as a body crashed into him. A pair of arms wrapped around him in a crushing hug.
"I'm fine kid! Mind lettin' me breathe?" He gasped out while lightly patting her back.
She slowly released him and a look worry was evident on her face. "Fine?! Are you kidding me?! You were just shot!"
She looked over his body to see his injuries but was surprised to see that there trace of bullets wounds on his body aside from fresh blood splotches.
"Like I said I'm dandy." He asssured, getting to his feet rotating his head and cracking his neck joints. "Luckily I'm a fast healer."
Supergirl blinked at that short answer. "Oh...well thats good to know."
"Are you two alright?" They both turned around to see Superman and Wonder Woman walking up to them with Parasite incapacited with a metal lamp post wrapped around him.
"Yeah...but those bastards got away though." Wolverine growled out in irritation.
Superman nodded. "Don't worry. Metallo will most likely try hiding out somewhere in a safehouse to get repaired. So I'll might need your tracking skills again."
Wolverine grunted a "yes" in response. He had no problem with helping Superman locate the cyborg. And this aforementioned safehouse will most likely be protected by led that he be able to see through.
The Kryptonian then switched his attention to his cousin and gave her a stern disapproval gaze.
"Can you three wait for me in the javelin? I'll join you soon as soon as I take care of Parasite.
Supergirl flinched at the look Clark gave her. It was the one she knew all to well, the "You and me are going to have serious talk later" look.
The javelin docked in the hangar bay. The ride back wasn't a pleasant one as it was filled two arguing Kryptonians. Superman reprimanding Supergirl for not following his direct orders while she would retort back with how she didn't want lose the only tactical advantage they had.
But when he explained the reason for that specific order she slowly deflated. He knew that Metallo would have back up and he was right. And because of that rash decision of hers she almost died for being impetuous.
The ramp opened with the four stepping out. Supergirl had her are arms crossed with a look of petulant anger adorning her face. Superman who was standing could only shake his and sigh in disappointment. Once again she hasn't learned anything. He didn't know what it will take at this point. Not wanting to deal this now Superman left the hanger bay to the monitor room. He needed to report to Batman about Banes involvement in the mission.
Supergirl could only glare crossly at Superman wishing that she could burn a hole through his back. She was angry not only at him but herself for failing to prove herself to him. She was completely useless and it did little to change his viewpoint about her.
"Don't take it personally kid." Her yellow and blue cladded teammate said. "He's just lookin' out for ya."
Kara could only role her eyes. How many time has she he heard that by now? "I know thats the problem. I want him to stop doing that."
"Then stop tryin' t' prove yerself for him and do it for yerself so that he won't!"
That gave her pause as those words registered in her head. She slowly turned to him and saw that stern gaze that was similar to Clark's but there something different about his. Unlike Clark's she saw that Wolverine's eyes held something that saw a sense of potential within her. It reminded her of the look her teachers would give to the under achieving students at her school.
Wolverine continued on with his lecture. "If you wanna know that you have it ya then make sure you know. Not anyone else."
Supergirl reflected on what he just told her and felt some pressure ease away from her shoulders. She then realized that she had been going about this wrong way. For so long she had wanted to show her cousin that she was a capable hero like him. While she didn't want seen as a champion like she wanted show that she could keep up with him and fight at his side. But because she had been so focused on wanting Clark to notice her Kara stumped her progress. What truly matters at the end of the day is that prove to yourself that you have what it takes.
Supergirl brightly smiled at Wolverine for his wise advice. "Thanks alot Wolvie. Er, can I call you that?"
The nickname made a grin etched itself upon his face and good naturedly huffed. "Sure, why not. You can add Logan on that list while yer at it."
"Only if you call me Kara."
He nodded making the young woman hug though not as tight as she did prior. Wolverine returned it in kind, happy to know that she was feeling better from the verbal argument she had with Superman.
She waved goodbye to the older man as she left the hangar bay to which he did the same.
"You seem to have a way with adolescence." Wonder Woman commented with an observant smile on her lips and hands on her hips.
Logan shrugged at that. "People have been sayin' that fer years and I still don't know hell their talkin' about."
"If you say so." She chuckled at his means to brush off the praise in his own way. She found it little endearing. "It was an honor to fight at your side. It seems that you truly do live upto your name."
"Well I try." He breathlessly laughed. He slowly frowned as he was reminded of the fact that the two of them are alone. Now he just muster the never and get it over with now." Listen uh...I just wanted t' say that I'm sorry."
Diana blinked at the sudden apology. She surely wasn't expecting that of him.
"It was wrong o' me t' say that t' you." Wolverine heavily sighed, trying to lessen the weight he felt in his chest. "You were only tryin' t' help and I threw it back in yer face."
"There's no need to apologize Logan. I don't believe in holding grudges against anyone." She softly said. "I know that even after all this time that you are still grieving and that you still require time."
Wolverine nodded in agreement. His head slowly drooped down and his eyes withered a bit becoming nothing but empty shells as his memories were starting to drift to that night. "I know I do...I just..."
He felt a gentle hand on his burly shoulder. The Warrior Heroines eyes were filled with such understanding and kindnsess. She was saying what she said to him before when she checked up on him in his apartment.
It wasn't your fault.
He still thought otherwise but the desire to smack her hand came to him like it did before. Wolverine just accepted the fact this woman genuinely wanted to help him. And not just her everyone here wanted him to be the man he once was.
"We will always be here for you Logan." The woman firmly reminded but still maintaining her gentle tone. "Never forget that."
The Feral Mutant allowed a small smile spread to on his grizzled face. She sure does know how to make one not lose hope within themselves doesn't she.
"Alright I won't...but on one condition."
She arched a sharp eyebrow at this. "And what would that be?"
"I'll keep tellin' myself that the Justice League will always have my back..." He smirked as he jerked his at the javelin behind them. "If you can give me a few lessons in flyin' this space cruiser."
Diana's face lit itself up in surprise. This man was full of unexpected twist wasn't he. A teasing smile graced her face. "I can arrange that. But I must warn you, I can be a very strict teacher."
Logan snorted amusedly. "All the better."
"Meet me here at 1 pm sharp in three days. Then we can begin your piloting lessons."
"Ya got it!" He promised before walking out of the hangar bay. "I'm gonna hit the showers. See ya 'round Wonder Woman."
"Yes, you to."
She couldn't help the smile as watched him walk off. It looked to be that a bright future would be ensured for him with the Justice League and Diana would do everything she could make sure he stayed that course.
After all, it is what a friend would do.
