Kevin had been in the future for a week now. He spent the first day seeing what else had changed in Hogwarts. Other than the lack of a floo network, not much had really changed. The second day was spent talking to his future coworkers.
Pomona was a sweetheart who had immediately started to treat the young man like a son once they started talking about Hufflepuff. From what she had told him, not much had changed for Hufflepuff or Herbology. When Kevin told her stories of his old herbology teacher, she was amazed. She knew that he was from near a hundred years in the past, but she had not thought that the young man was taught by one of the best minds in Herbology! She asked what Mirabel Garlick had been like and was not too surprised when she had been told that Mirabel had largely preferred plants to humans. Pomona had apparently had similar sentiments at times but had her fair share of them try to kill her during her youth. So, she likes the two groups about the same amount. When he got to the story about the final battle against the goblins, she had a proud smile on her face when told about all the plants the professor used to aid them. More than a little happy that people were able to see that Herbology is more than just planting things in pots. He promised to help her if she ever needed it and she did the same for him.
Minerva was a stern woman who claimed to not care for nonsense. A statement that he cast doubt on after hearing about the "Marauders," a group of young Gryffindors who played a number of pranks on the school throughout their seven years yet were never expelled. That part actually got a chuckle out of him because the prodigious troublemaker had done his fair share of pranks and hearing that they were always able to get away with it made him wish he could meet them. Then Minerva told him the bad news. The leader had been killed by the latest dark lord, along with his wife, leaving his child an orphan. His best friend betrayed him and killed another, along with 20 muggles. When Minerva mentioned only a finger being left, Kevin's face scrunched up in bemusement. He knew almost every curse in the world, all of the ones in Britain, and he had never heard of one that would leave only a single finger behind. Deciding to look into any new spells that had been made later, he asked about the last Marauder. The man had apparently become a recluse and no one had heard from him in ten years. Before leaving her, the young man questioned what became of the child. She said that he was being raised by some muggle relatives, but she had called them the worst sort of muggles. Asking for some clarification, the woman spied on their neighbors, the man was a walrus who sneered at anything that was not "normal," and their son was a pig who threw tantrums at everything. Kevin had to agree, they did seem to be a bad family but maybe not the worst. He left her saying that he would be happy to help her keep any troublemakers in line with a sly smirk on his face. She let a snort out at that.
Severus was exactly as described. Sneering at the time-displaced man when he tried to talk to him before walking away, making a dramatic swish with his cape. Said that he wasn't here to make friends, but that he was there to teach. At least Sharp was cordial. And able to smile.
After talking to Severus, Filius was a great refresher. Not only that, but the man was an absolute delight! He spoke with what seemed to be constant cheer or enthusiasm, hard to differentiate the two. A former dueling champion, Kevin asked what other people thought when he gained his championships. The young man was told that some people had always looked down on him because of his goblin heritage but this had actually gotten most of them to quiet down and give him some more respect. Kevin knew not to look down on any goblins or their abilities after fighting them so much in his first year. He also knew that some goblins genuinely wanted to get along with wizards and were often discouraged because of wizards' prejudice against any non-wizards. Wanting to make sure Filius knew this, the young man told him some of his stories about the goblins that he had met and befriended. Arn, the merchant who preferred a paintbrush to goblin steel. Garnuff, the poor man who just wanted his pet mooncalf back from heinous poachers. Lodgok, Ranrok's brother who showed sympathy to a human that was kind to him and in turn was thrown away by his brother. Filius seemed to like hearing about a person's time with goblins that wasn't only negative. They talked for quite a bit, even breaking out the firewhiskey and playing some parlor games to decide who was the better Charms caster. Neither remembers who won and they do not care to try.
The third day, Kevin met two more of the Hogwarts staff. The two could not be more different. One was a small, hunched-over, hate-filled man who only sneered. The other was a large man who had a constant smile on his face. The former was a squib named Argus Filch. He was an old man, balding, wrinkly, and seemingly perpetually angry. He wore shabby robes and had a cat that followed him everywhere. Even the cat seemed to hate everything but its owner. Argus was the current caretaker but he seemed to hate all young people. Drake had barely spoken to the man but he seemed to hate him on principle, and talked about how he wished he could still chain students up and beat them. This statement resulted in Kevin's eyes widening and hand reaching for his wand. He knew it had been allowed during his time there but even Moon never did it.
The latter was named Rubeus Hagrid and he was the Groundskeeper. He had attended Hogwarts in the 1940's before he was expelled for killing a student. Kevin found that hard to believe because of how he was perpetually happy and incredibly nice. When Kevin went down to the hut where his Magical Creatures class once took place, Hagrid had immediately invited him in for some tea and actual rocks with chocolate chips in the divots. The tea was fine, the rocks were inedible to Kevin, but Hagrid loved to talk about magical creatures of any kind. Seemed he was at his happiest around them and the last Keeper was slightly surprised that his dog was just a non-magical Great Dane. The way he talked about animals reminded Kevin of Poppy Sweeting. That girl loved creatures more than most humans, especially after dealing with those poachers. Main difference between the two seemed to be that Hagrid didn't hate people, most would just judge the man based on his looks and seemed scared of him.
After getting to know all of his soon-to-be coworkers currently in the castle, Kevin decided to look into some old friends. Since the first one should be close by, he took Caligo out for a ride. During the flight, the time-displaced man was happy to see that most things were still the same. When they touched down in Feldcroft, Kevin walked towards the house that he had often visited with his friends. He hesitated for a second, worried about who may answer the door. Gathering his courage, he knocked twice and waited for an answer. It was thirty seconds before the door was opened by an old woman in green. She looked at the young man who knocked before her eyes widened and she reached a trembling hand out to his face.
"Kevin?"
"Hello, Anne. It's good to see you." Kevin replied with a smile, glad that one of his friends was still alive.
Anne Sallow, twin sister of Sebastian Sallow and close friend of the Ancient Magic user, pulled the now younger man into her arms and buried her face in his chest. Kevin returned the embrace, being careful not to hurt her, and rubbed her back after he felt his shirt start to stick to him. He knew something like this would happen after he realized that he had been told that he had been declared missing for a hundred years. The two just stood in the doorway, hugging, for a couple minutes before Anne collected herself. She backed up, but still held him, to get another look at him.
"You haven't changed at all." She said with tears still in her eyes.
"You have." That got him a smack to the arm and a small laugh from his friend. She invited him inside and had him explain everything. By the time the story was done, she was shaking her head and smacking Kevin again.
"Stupid boy. Mixing ancient magic with a new type of magic that you had just learned. It's a wonder you survived your first year with the stupid things you did with Sebastian."
That brought Kevin to the point he wanted to talk about. "What happened to Seb? Can't imagine he would leave you here by yourself after everything."
Anne's eyes grew heavy once more. "Shortly after you went missing, he began a search for you. Got almost everyone in Hogwarts involved. Months went by and people began to lose hope. Your family hadn't heard from you, the aurors had not found a clue, and everyone believed something horrible had happened. Sebastian never gave up though, he knew you were a powerful wizard and nothing ordinary could kill you. Years went by and right when he had almost given up, he heard about a wizard with great power and charm. Seb thought," she paused, eyes watering and clutching her chest," that you had finally resurfaced and immediately left to find out. I didn't hear from him for a while before the Bugle announced casualties from an Obscurus in London." Anne stopped talking and Kevin moved to embrace her, realizing where she was going. Tears began to leak from his eyes after hearing that his friend likely died a painful death because of the Obscurus. They were people with great magical ability who have gone through immense mental pain and agony in their developing years, usually due to abusive home lives. And when they finally turn, they lose control and go on a rampage as an erratic, black fog.
Once Anne had calmed down, she told Kevin some good news about his friends. Natsai returned to Uagadou and became a Charms professor, Poppy set up some sanctuaries for creatures around England and had even named one of them for him before meeting a man who loved creatures almost as much as she had, Arthur Plummely became a curse breaker for Gringotts so he could go on more explorations, Garreth Weasely actually had some luck with some of his drinks and they are still sold at the Three Broomsticks. Imelda Reyes became the Captain for the Holyhead Harpies for a number of years. Amit wandered for years, trying to document the stars and improving his Gobbledegook. Kevin wanted to ask about one friend that he was especially worried about.
"What about Ominis?"
The smile dropped from Anne's face as she told the story. "After his family heard about you, they decided to 'cull the weak' since there was nothing in the way anymore."
The ancient magic user's face was set in stone. He gave Anne another hug, then walked out of the hut. Everyone in Feldcroft heard the crack that followed.
