Disclaimer: I don't own any characters blah blah blah owned by JK Rowling blah blah blah don't sue me.
Summary: Ariana Dumbledore died after stepping into the middle of a three-way duel between her two brothers and her eldest brother's… boyfriend? lover? friend with benefits? What effect would Albus dying instead have had on various characters in the wizarding world (Told in bullet point format, as this is a list of ideas. It also includes characters from the Fantastic beasts trilogy and a reference to Cursed Child)
If you think I forgot something, please tell me.
I don't mind a well thought-out idea with your reasoning.
I do mind "helpful" comments like "YOU'RE WRONG, YOU (insert swear word here)".
The former will be replied to, and probably included; the latter won't, and will probably be deleted.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Albus Died Instead Of Ariana?
Aberforth, Ariana and Gellert:
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that one (or both) of the remaining Dumbledores would kill Gellert
They would probably dispose of Gellert's body somewhere but hold a funeral for Albus
Elphias Doge would attend, along with most of Albus' classmates and a few of the Dumbledore's neighbours
Aberforth and Ariana would travel to… wherever Aurelius/Credence's birth mother had been sent to (France, if I remember correctly?)
Due to being raised by a loving family, Aurelius never becomes an Obscurus. Instead, he attends… probably Beauxbatons, has a job, probably has kids, etc.
Nagini:
Due to the previous bullet point, Aurelius never breaks away from the circus in Paris with Nagini (meaning the Zouwu is also never freed)
Nagini might not escape… ever. Unless the circus master lets her go once she's permanently a snake
This could prevent her from meeting Tom Marvolo Riddle and becoming his horcrux
Leta:
Due to Credence not being on the boat, there isn't any baby for her to switch her baby brother with; they both survive the trip, her boggart isn't her brother's corpse, and she probably doesn't become friends with Newt or marry Theseus, neither does she die in the Paris catacombs
Newt, Tina, Queenie and Jacob:
Newt only ends up in New York because of Frank, whose location he only found out about due to Albus
However, I'll presume he rescues Frank just a bit later on
Tina was never fired from being an Auror since she never performed magic in front of a Muggle, since Mary Lou wasn't beating Credence
Newt and Jacob don't bump into each other, so Jacob doesn't learn about magic, doesn't open his bakery, doesn't fall in love with and marry Queenie, and doesn't end up having a grandson called Anthony Goldstein attend Hogwarts (a bit of guesswork for that last point)
Neither do Newt and Tina meet, fall in love or have a grandson named Rolf Scamander marry Luna Lovegood, or have great-grandchildren Lorcan and Lysander Scamander
Newt probably still managed to publish his book
Percival Graves:
Oh, he's fine. Not being locked up/tortured by Gellert Grindelwald will do wonders for your mental and physical health
Qilin:
They're also fine. Mother and baby twins have a grand old life after picking the 1932 Supreme Mugwump
Supreme Mugwump 1932:
It's still Vincencia Santos, but she gets chosen much quicker since there isn't the whole rigmarole with the resurrected Qilin/Gellert/Albus/etc
The Supreme Mugwump after Vincencia Santos is _ (possibly Babajide Akingbade, the man who replaced Dumbledore after he was voted out in 1995)
Henry Shaw Jnr, Mary Lou Barebone, Chastity Barebone, Irma Dugard, Corvus Lestrange V, Aurelius Dumbledore's aunt, Red Haired Young Witch, Krall, Leta Lestrange:
Due to changes in Fantastic Beasts, these people didn't die. Yay! (Or Boo! in some cases)
Armando Dippet:
First of all, he chooses someone else as Deputy
Secondly, I'd like to think the whole "send the children home during summer holidays regardless of how safe or otherwise they are'' was a spiel Dumbledore pitched. Without him, I'd like to think students, under particular circumstances (abusive homes/living in an orphanage/living in the muggle world during a muggle world war), Dippet would let students spend the summer in Hogwarts
Tom Marvolo Riddle:
Instead of Dumbledore, someone a bit kinder/less biased/less likely to set a boy's wardrobe on fire is sent to inform Tom about magic
Still sorted Slytherin, still thinks he's a muggleborn until he finds out about the Slytherin heritage
I'd like to think that, due to not having to go back to the orphanage during the summer, he doesn't experience the Blitz, doesn't develop his intense fear of death, and doesn't look for information about horcruxes
Hopefully, due to spending more time in Hogwarts, when he finds the Chamber of Secrets, it's during the summer holidays/a time when Myrtle isn't in the bathroom, and she makes it to graduation (despite Olive Hornby's mocking)
(This would mean Rubeus Hagrid makes it to graduation and probably finds a job in a dragon sanctuary or something similar)
He still looks for information about his family, still isn't happy with the answers he gets. However, maybe… he doesn't… kill them? *crosses fingers*
I don't know whether Albus not being around would prevent or encourage Tom to become Voldemort. Even if he still became Voldemort, he mightn't have gone so far, as he'd be as mortal as anyone else.
For the butterfly effect, I'll continue under the presumption that he doesn't become Voldemort. Instead, he works his way up the Ministry ladder to become a Department Head. Or he could have set up a shop, selling ethically sourced snake potions ingredients from using his Parseltongue. Or even becoming the DADA Professor
Whichever the case may be, I don't think he'd curse the DADA position
Remus Lupin:
Never attends Hogwarts since Albus isn't there to ignore the laws
Sirius Black, Lily Evans, Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, Severus Snape:
I don't think Peter would end up friends with Sirius and James
The remaining "marauders" would have no motivation to become Animagi since there's no "Moony" around
And I also doubt the map would be created
Due to the lack of war tensions between Gryffindor and Slytherin, I think the antagonism between Sirius, James and Severus would be lesser. More of an academic, slightly hostile rivalry. They certainly wouldn't be hexing each other in the corridors
Since he wouldn't need to one-up the Marauders, I don't think Severus would create as many spells. If he did, it'd probably have been the less harmful ones, like Langlock, Muffliato and the toenail growing hex. Potentially Levicorpus and Liberacorpus
Due to not being hoisted by the ankle, his friendship with Lily lasts past fifth year. Potentially until after graduating?
He also never meets Moony during a full moon
I don't know if Lily and James would have married without wartime stress. They didn't live long enough to develop problems in their marriage: if they had, I could see them potentially getting a divorce
Jobs! James and Sirius would either live off their inheritances or potentially become Aurors/Hit Wizards. Peter would probably be a low-level ministry worker or shop employee. Lily could take a Charms mastery, teach/research/create spells, or something else. Severus - Potions Master. Without two masters dictating his every move, he could do a whole lot more than modify old recipes, especially when he doesn't have to teach "dunderheads" (though he could be good at teaching those studying for their Potions Mastery by becoming apprentices)
If "Harry James Potter" was ever born, it would probably have been later than July 31st 1980. If she had two children with James or married and had a child with another person, Severus could have been the godfather
Also, the child isn't an orphan/potentially has siblings
Peter Pettigrew isn't needed as Secret Keeper, Sirius Black doesn't get framed and illegally incarcerated
Sybill Trelawney:
She doesn't say "the one with the power to defeat the dark lord approaches", etc
Alice Frank Longbottom:
They wouldn't be cursed to insanity and wouldn't become permanent residents of the Janus Thickney Ward
They would raise Neville, and Great Uncle Algie wouldn't drop him out the window
Neville would come to Hogwarts loved, probably have more self-confidence, and would have his own wand
Bellatrix, Rodolphus Rabastan Lestrange and Barty Crouch Jnr:
Don't torture the Longbottoms, and don't get sent to Azkaban
(Perhaps Bellatrix has a child? One whose father is her husband, hopefully)
Dursley family:
"Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much." Without a "Freak" nephew living in the cupboard under the stairs, "perfectly normal" they remain, having no contact with their Wizarding world relatives
Regulus Black, dead members of the Bones family, Benjy Fenwick, Robert McGonagall, McGregor and McKinnon families, Dorcas Meadowes, the twelve muggles killed by Pettigrew, Lily Evans, James Potter, Fabian and Gideon Prewett, Evan Rosier:
Since there's no First Wizarding War, all of these probably live longer than they do in canon. Yay! (Or boo! in some cases)
Minister for Magic:
Hector Fawley probably lasted longer as Minister of Magic without any war from Grindelwald since his insufficient reaction to Grindelwald is what cost him his job
Leonard Spencer-Moon may or may not have been elected
Wilhelmina Tuft would probably still be elected. Hopefully, her successor (her son) wouldn't
Nobby Leach would hopefully have lasted longer as Minister without an active group with anti-muggleborn sentiments
Without a wizarding war or the rise of magical terrorist Voldemort, Eugenia Jenkins may have lasted longer in office
Harold Minchum, who might have been elected because he promised to go hard on Voldy, probably wouldn't have gotten in
Millicent Bagnold may or may not have gotten in
I honestly hope Cornelius Fudge wouldn't get in or that he'd be voted out pretty sharpish if he did
Hogwarts year 1991-1992:
Staffing changes! Slughorn is still Potions Master and Slytherin Head of House instead of Snape (Or someone else replaced Slughorn). Trelawney isn't the Divination professor (if the subject is still available. Which it probably isn't). Quirrell isn't the DADA Professor (he may still be the Muggle Studies Professor). DADA Professor is _ (and probably has been for a long time). Headmaster/mistress is , and Deputy is _
Peaceful year at Hogwarts. Hermione would probably be sorted into Ravenclaw. No antagonistic Potions master, no possessed DADA Professor (hopefully), no "TROLL! IN THE DUNGEON!", no "You're the youngest seeker in a century", no Fluffy, Norbert(a), dying unicorn or Philosopher's stone.
(Perhaps they have Masters in various topics coming and giving guest lectures/talking about Apprenticeships?)
Hogwarts year 1992-1993:
Pleasant year. "Harry" isn't a Parselmouth. No Lockhart or bad Duelling Club, possessed Ginny or "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." etc.
Hogwarts year 1993-1994:
Quiet. No escaped prisoner, werewolf DADA Professor, issues with Dementors, broken Nimbus 2000 (if he even has it in the first place) or time turner escapades
Hogwarts year 1994-1995:
The Quidditch World Cup is a roaring success, especially without any Death Eater riots. Winky remains a Crouch elf
Same old, same old. Quidditch isn't cancelled, there isn't a Polyjuiced DADA Professor (hopefully) or a Triwizard Tournament, and Tom Riddle Jnr/Voldemort doesn't need to resurrect himself
Hogwarts year 1995-1996:
The Dementors stay in Azkaban; there isn't a kangaroo court trial for Harry
Almost boring at this stage. No pink toad, Educational Decrees, DA, Blood Quill, student interrogation, horcrux visions, Occlumency lessons, none of the teachers are attacked, everyone takes their OWLs/NEWTs without interruptions (including the Weasley twins)
Hogwarts year 1996-1997:
Boring. No memories, no one is brought back from retirement to access a memory, nor does anyone die on "The Lightning-Struck Tower" or reveal " I, the Half-Blood Prince!"
Hogwarts year 1997-1998:
Uneventful. Average year at Hogwarts, no dictator taking over or attacking the castle, OWLs and NEWTs continue as expected, no horcrux hunting, no one dies, everyone graduates
Hannah Abbott's mother, Bathilda Bagshot, Slytherin's Basilisk, Broderick Bode, Bogrod, Sirius Black, Amelia Bones, Lavender Brown, Frank Bryce, Charity Burbage, Vincent Crabbe, Colin Creevey, Dirk Cresswell, Crouch family, Cedric Diggory, Dobby, the Fawleys, Florean Fortescue, Gibbon, Gornuk, Gregorovich, Griphook, Hedwig, Bertha Jorkins, Igor Karkaroff, Bellatrix Lestrange, Remus Lupin, Montgomery child killed by Fenrir Greyback, Alastor Moody, Nagini, Octavius Pepper, Peter Pettigrew, Quirinus Quirrell, Tom Riddle Jnr/Voldemort, Scabior, Rufus Scrimgeour, Hepzibah Smith, Severus Snape, Dean Thomas' father, Edward Tonks, Nymphadora Tonks, Emmeline Vance, Fred Weasley:
Since there's no Second Wizarding War, all of these probably live longer than they do in canon. Yay! (Or boo! in some cases)
Anthony Goldstein, Anthony Goldstein's magical parent, Teddy Lupin, James Sirius Potter, Albus Severus Potter, Lily Luna Potter, Delphini Riddle, Rolf Scamander, Rolf Scamander's father (probably), Lysander Scamander, Lorcan Scamander, Hugo Granger-Weasley, Rose Granger-Weasley, Dominique Delacour-Weasley, Louis Delacour-Weasley, Victoire Delacour-Weasley:
Due to their parents not meeting/marrying, these characters probably wouldn't exist (The double-barrel surnames are to distinguish who the parents of the various Weasley children are)
Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasley
Due to changes in canon, these people don't get Chocolate Frog Cards
