Kim strolled through the grocery store, grabbing what they needed for the week. It had been a few weeks since Hayley had turned on them and everything they had tried had not given them any answer as to whether she was evil or not. They were getting closer and closer to the option where she had to confront Hayley and see if she could get a good read on her. It was something she was hesitant to really push with how much Ollie and Tommy objected to it, but she knew their options were limited. It was one thing if Tommy hated the idea, it was another thing to have Ollie objecting.
"Kim! Hi!" Hayley called as Kim was pulled back to the present, as she looked between two different varieties of apples, knowing that neither of the men in the house would care. She looked over at Hayley and felt a tingle go down her spine. The only thing that was good about this was the fact that they were in public. There was only so much that Hayley could attempt to do to her here without causing herself problems. "What have you and Tommy been up to lately?"
"Just house hunting," Kim said as she forced herself to keep her tone neutral. She was nearing the end of her rental agreement and they still hadn't found a way to really guarantee their safety in Tommy's house. While they hadn't planned to move in together, it had sort of just happened over the last month and with that, they both desperately wanted a place where they had their own space and Ollie had his own space as well. Kim's apartment was starting to slowly drive them all crazy. "How are you?"
"I've noticed Tommy hasn't been home much, but I wouldn't say the nights have been quiet at his house," Hayley said as Kim gulped and nodded. She, reflexively, held down the buttons on her communicator and hoped that it would get through to Tommy or really any of the other rangers. She wasn't too worried about Hayley making a scene at Albertsons, but she was concerned about when she tried to leave. "We've been doing lots of work in the lab."
"Oh. That's great to hear. I'm excited to see what you come up with next," Kim said as she started to move away and Hayley grabbed her arm.
"Mesi and Zell say hi," Hayley whispered in her ear as she gave her a hug and Kim reminded herself that she couldn't go straight for a blaster in public. "And I've made it my life's work to make your and Tommy's lives a living hell."
"Hey…I thought you were getting groceries and then heading home," Tommy said as he walked over to Kim as she had slid into the back of his Thursday night class. She almost never came back to the dojo unless she forgot something and her face clearly said that wasn't it. "What's wrong?"
"Can you call the others in? Tonight," Kim said as he felt the nerves rolling off of her and he just nodded. "I'm going to be up in my office, just give me a yell…"
"Babe- what happened?" Tommy asked as he caught one of her arms and she spun around to face him. "Kim…"
"I ran into her. I think we have our answer," Kim said as Tommy just nodded before gently squeezing her hand and then letting her go. He took in a deep breath to get his focus back and turned back to teaching the first degree black belt level class. He could only imagine that it was not good news if she had come directly here instead of going home, but he hoped that he might be proven wrong.
"Can I go up to Mom's office?" Ollie asked as he jogged up to Tommy and Tommy nodded for him to go on. If there was one thing he had figured out, Kim had less time to get worried about things when Ollie was hanging out with her. And right now, he really wanted her to stay calm about whatever she had discovered today.
"So…what is it?" Ethan asked as they had all teleported into Kim's office as Tommy had just come up from locking up the building to the public. Ollie was perched on a corner of Kim's desk, engulfed in a drawing that he was working on and completely unimpressed by their appearance.
"Not evil," Kim stated as she watched the news hit everyone in the room, but especially Tommy. While she was sure that the rangers couldn't tell, it hurt Tommy that his friend had decided to take out a personal problem against his entire family. "I don't know what we do at this point…it's not like…"
"We focus on Mesogog and Zeltrax- if we can break Smitty and Anton away from them- she won't have any back up. Then she'll have to come after us herself and that will be harder," Tommy said as she locked eyes with him and he could tell something else was eating at her. "What is it?"
"I just…I have this feeling…" Kim trailed off as she shook her head and then forced a smile. She wasn't sure that she could explain herself right now, even to Tommy. "What do you guys think?"
"Us?" Trent asked as Kim and Tommy nodded. "I don't think we're really the ones you should ask."
"She hasn't threatened your family, it's different. The four of you can see things more clearly than we can," Kim said as Tommy jerked around to her and she then gave a pointed look at Ollie. He wanted to know exactly what Hayley had said now, but with Ollie there he understood why she wouldn't push reveal too much. He might be drawing, but they both knew that he was listening as well. "So what do you think?"
"What keeps her from linking up with the next evil that comes along? And the evil after that? And the evil after that?" Conner asked as the room went silent. This was not a path that any of them had considered that Hayley might take, but it did seem like a viable way to remain a permanent thorn in their sides. "At what point does it matter that she's helping them, willingly."
"I'd say we passed that point as soon as she helped them ambush all of us that night," Tommy admitted as he just shook his head. He hated that they were even considering what might need to come out of this. "I'm hoping it won't come to that."
"We all are, but if it does. How are we doing this?" Kira asked as Kim saw the pain on Tommy's face and she ran a hand up and down his back. This was a conversation that he had never wanted to have, about anyone.
"I'd honestly prefer the police route, but we're going to have one hell of a time proving anything," Tommy said as Kim looked at him and shook her head. "What do you mean no?"
"We've got footage from your house of her, repeatedly, breaking and entering after you took your keys back and moved all of the spare keys. It's not a lot, but it is something we could start with," Kim said as she watched him carefully. "I hope she'll come around Tommy, but I just don't know that that is going to happen this time. And I'm worried that…"
"Me too," Tommy said as they both looked at Ollie and then locked eyes. It would be one thing if she was just coming after them, but her message made Kim feel sure she was intent on coming after Ollie. There was really only one thing that could hurt them that bad. "We can figure something out."
"Ollie- you ready to go?" Kim suggested as she saw him nodding off and he shook his head. "Tommy is going to be right behind us, bub. You're falling asleep sitting up."
"Am not," Ollie argued as his head nodded again and Kim just stared at him. "Fine- I'll get my bookbag."
"I'll be behind you in a bit- I need to call a couple of our friends from MIT to just give them a heads up that something is going on. And then I'll be heading home, promise," Tommy said as he gave Kim a hug and he locked eyes with her long enough to see the fear running through her. He felt it too, but he knew he had to hold it together until they were alone. He had to hold it together for the rangers, not for her.
"You don't think she'll try to do something to Ollie…" Ethan trailed off as Tommy turned around to face them and their faces fell. "He's just a kid."
"But he's our kid. And there's a really good chance I would have never given Kim a chance again without him. Or we would have had a one night stand and gone up in flames. It's the best way to hurt both of us," Tommy said as the rangers all shook their heads. "I hate that we're even talking about it."
"What can we do?" Conner asked as Tommy shrugged. He wasn't sure. He had never had to worry about protecting his child before. It had only really been protecting himself and his other rangers in the past. "You got nothing? Seriously?"
"I have ideas, but a lot of it is going to be dependent on what Kim and I can agree on together- not just what I want. Just because we talked here, it doesn't mean this conversation is over. I'm sure neither of us is going to get much sleep over the next few days while we figure something out," Tommy said as he started packing his bag and the rangers watched him. He had always been the one that they went to for answers and it unnerved them that he didn't have a foolproof plan laid out on how to handle Hayley.
"Why don't we just go after her?" Trent asked as Tommy let out a long sigh.
"Because she's human. We have no evidence that she's been turned into anything other than herself and hopefully she'll shake out of this. I'm pretty sure we'll be going to file police reports for the breaking and entering in the morning and doing just about anything that we can to try to get some sort of consequences started that might make it click how bad things may end. After that…I don't know."
