Here's my first Hermione and Harry Christmas oneshots!
I don't own Harry Potter. That belongs to J.K Rowling and various publishing companies including Scholastic Corporation, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Raincoast Books, or any other company that has to do with the movies or merchandise.
Oneshot One – Sledding
The snow was soft and powdery. Harry had already seen kids push others down in it. Some tackled smaller kids down hard. He shuddered halfheartedly. Hermione's gloved hand then tugged him forward, and his mind returned to the task. He gripped the thick rope as he lugged the sled behind them.
Hermione's leading stopped as she took a deep breath after their small trek. Her eyes sparkled and she did a little wiggle. Harry was equally excited himself. This was the first time he would sled, not having the opportunity to do so at the Dursleys.
Hermione and her family made sure Harry wore proper winter clothes. He had on a thick hat, sweater, snow pants, mittens, and a padded puffy coat. Hermione was dressed the same.
Harry and Hermione stared down at the steep long hill before them. Hogwarts had a lot of acreage and bare land around it. Hermione spotted this hill after she and Harry went exploring. This place wasn't too crowded from what they could see.
The sled was big and gray. The big plastic could easily hold three people and was perfect for Harry and Hermione's eleven and twelve year old bodies respectively. It was rigid enough to hold them both. Yet still pliable enough that if they crashed the sled, it wouldn't hurt them.
Harry sat down first and opened his legs. Hermione sat in front of him, grabbing the rope.
"Ready, Hermione?"
"Ready, Harry!"
Slowly rocking forward, Harry and Hermione let momentum carry them down.
Harry was yelling and hollering in delight, with a huge smile on his face. Hermione was silent but had a mixture of fright and happiness on her face.
Hermione could feel the cold wind whipping across her cheeks and through her hair. She was also aware of how Harry's hands were holding onto her shoulders. They weren't gripping too tight, which contrasted her own hands on the rope. The knot in her stomach grew when the sled became airborne for a split second due to a bump.
Harry felt such a rush. When they first pushed off, he had been a wee bit nervous. But once they tipped and were moving down the hill, he couldn't get enough. And that feeling doubled when he felt the sled jump into the air when it hit a bump. In no time it touched back down.
The rest of their ride was smooth yet fast. All too soon, both Harry and Hermione were at the bottom of the hill where it evened out.
"That was fantastic! Wasn't it, Hermione?"
"Yeah, it was fun! I wasn't sure before we started that I was going to like it so much. But I did!"
Hermione had a big grin on her face. Her buck teeth showing in a cute way, before biting her bottom lip soon after. This made Harry pause for a moment to store in the back of his mind, before he continued.
"We went so fast! And there was all this wind and speed!"
He mimicked the sled with hand gestures. He was slowly calming down his panting breaths to more moderate breaths. But even so, Harry felt like he was brimming with energy.
Hermione loved watching Harry like this, all excitable and gushing. It made her happy to see her best friend like this.
"Let's go again, Hermione!"
"Ok!"
She grabbed the rope and turned around, with the sled behind her. She then started rushing up the slope, her long curls bouncing as she hurried.
Harry's eyes followed after her, she still looked so happy. Harry was glad for Hermione. He loved it when she got to let loose and have fun. He sometimes worried that she took on a lot of work. So it was nice to see her like this.
Harry once again sat down first, Hermione second. This time, his arms were wrapped around her stomach. Hermione felt a tangle of nerves in her stomach due to them both sitting closer than their last ride together. She didn't dwell too long on this new change though.
The kids were off, plummeting down towards the castle once more.
The snow sprayed at their sides. Their sled made a constant scraping whoosh sound on the snow. Harry and Hermione picked up speed and were whizzing due to the steepness.
Harry and Hermione leaned to the left.
But ended up going too far, much to their surprise.
The sled started to shift and tilt, putting Hermione and Harry's sides facing towards the castle. Panicking slightly, Harry was awkward yet fast as he jut out his leg. He then used it to realign themselves and their ride.
Hermione cheered at Harry's quick thinking and ability. But even that failed after a second. The two sledders then felt the world swirl around them as the sled performed a full 360 degrees spin. Hermione and Harry's screams of fright echoed in their silent patch of land. They clutched each other with no regrets. His arms squeezed her stomach tighter, with her own arms holding his hands to her in a death grip.
Soon they were coming to the smooth bottom of the hill. Even their abrupt descent stop was spectacular as they both tumbled into the powder. Hermione was pitched forward a bit further than Harry was, try as he might to cushion her fall.
Glasses rimmed with gold wires held up together remarkably well. Harry was scared for a split second that they broke during the fall. Aside from the lenses being smeared with melted water, they were fine. Though Harry couldn't see at all, he heard Hermione's breathing close by. Once he quickly assessed himself and noticed nothing hurt too badly, he crawled over to his best friend.
Hermione's eyes positively shown with euphoria.
Harry wondered if his did the same?
He could see no worries in her eyes right now. They sparkled and looked so full of energy. Her gaze caught him and he froze for a second.
She was beautiful.
Time passed but neither noticed. But their moment was broken when a big gust of cold wind came through, leaving just as quickly.
Harry knew he had to say something fast. He didn't want her thinking he was a loon for gazing too long.
Making it to her side where she laid, Harry rolled on his back. Their sides touched.
"You alright, Hermione?"
"I'm ok, Harry! What about you?"
"Incredible!"
Harry and Hermione both lied next to each other as they fought to catch their breaths. Wet mitten meeting wet mitten as the two shared a tired high five before giggling madly.
