Chapter Seven: Wyrdeer

Akari isn't surprised to see both Rei and Laventon in Cyllene's office. It's been the way of things since she has come to Hisui. She smiles, greeting Laventon with a polite, "Hello," before turning to Rei stating playfully, "We meet again." He just gives her a goofy grin in return until Cyllene walks in behind her.

The captain has her usual stern expression as she takes her place at the front of the room, hands clasped firmly behind her back. She speaks with an air of authority. "Professor Laventon, that briefing if you please."

Laventon nods. He looks at Akari. "Yes, let's get right to it. So, I understand you've been requested to find out the cause of Kleavor's frenzied state."

"That's right." Akari isn't surprised that Laventon is the one to give her the information concerning this assignment. This isn't a normal mission after all. It's incredibly dangerous unlike the requests she's completed around town.

Laventon continues, "As you're aware by now, Kleavor's is a mighty thing. Nigh invincible, even. The Security Corps tried throwing Pokéballs at him when they were attacked, but…" He trails off, almost looking ashamed.

Akari frowns. "The security Corps tried to catch Kleavor?" HOLY HELL, that's bad. She might be new to Hisui, but even she knows that was a HUGE mistake. The Pearl Clan is probably frothing at the mouth.

"Unfortunately, yes," Laventon answers. "The commander ordered stupidity. This decision has set us back with both the Pearl and Dimond Clans." Yeah, Akari bets it did. After seeing the way Mai was with Wyrdeer, there's no doubt tensions are a lot worse.

"Laventon." Cyllene's tone is full of warning. "Watch your words. Such things can be seen as insubordination."

"Oh, dear." Laventon is distressed. "But it's true." He doesn't like that he can't speak up. Akari is of the same mindset. Wasn't Laventon brought here to educate? How can he teach if he's gagged from speaking out against foolishness?

Cyllene takes a moment. She's thinking, Akari can tell. "I'm aware," she begins carefully. "Just be mindful of how you speak about the commander. Some may see your words are traitorous. I don't desire such a thing."

"I understand." Laventon inclines his head. "Forgive me."

Cyllene motions towards Akari, signaling Laventon. "Please, continue. She needs to know the rest." The words are spoken kindly. She cares a great deal about the professor.

Laventon clears his throat. "As I previously stated, the Security Corps attempted to catch Kleavor. Laventon shakes his head, recalling the report. It truly upsets him. "I'm afraid to say that they didn't even come close to catching him, and on top of that, they were almost killed. My understanding is that four members of the Pearl Clan saved them from certain death."

'Shit,' Akari thinks. That is super bad too. People in Jubilife Village already have trust issues with Pokémon. This whole scenario is only going to make things worse. Kleavor is considered a noble Pokémon, meaning he shouldn't attack or hurt anyone, but he did. The average fearful person won't understand that it happened do some kind of frenzied mind. They'll only see a raging Pokémon.

Cyllene's expression has turned concerned. She looks Akari over consideringly. "I'd like to be perfectly clear on this point. This mission will put you in extreme danger. Do you believe you can handle it?" It's an out. Cyllene is giving Akari the option to back out.

It's a kind gesture, but one Akari cannot take. "I accept." She might die this time; heaven knows she's done a lot of risky things she shouldn't have in her life. This one though, is on a whole other level. If she's not careful, she'll lose her head – literally.

Cyllene inclines her head, accepting Akari's answer. It impresses her to some extent. Akari is willing to risk her life for a Pokémon. Cyllene cannot think of anyone else here in Jubilife who'd do such a thing. It's likely why the commander chose her in the first place. "Very well, then let us go over the particulars."

Akari nods, ready.

Cyllene begins. "The Dimond and the Pearl Clans revere their nobles because they believe these Pokémon serve their Almighty Sinnoh." It's said very factually. Akari can tell Cyllene finds the beliefs of the natives to the hokum. It's a shame, because the Almighty Sinnoh really exists. Cyllene continues, "They leave offerings to express their gratitude to these Pokémon in locations they call noble seats."

Laventon steps in at this point. "I wonder if a good starting point for our research would be to find out what sorts of offerings the Pearl Clan normally leaves Kleavor?"

"Maybe," Akari says. It certainly could lure Kleavor in closer. He may be frenzied, but that doesn't mean he doesn't eat.

Rei suddenly clears his throat. Akari jerks to attention along with Laventon as Rei says, "Adaman! Welcome back!" He forces a smile. "And you brough Mai with you. How nice." That's a complete lie. He's still upset about Mai's attitude towards him at Deertrack Heights. However, his announcement was like magic, ceasing all conversation in the office.

The look Adaman gives Rei speaks volumes. He knows that Rei's greeting is just a warning to his comrades. However, Adaman smiles as if nothing of the sort had occurred. "It's good to be back." Yeah, that's a lie too. He'd rather be anywhere else than in this office.

Cyllene bows, showing proper respect towards the leader of the Dimond Clan. "How can I be of assistance?"

It's Mai who answers. "We need to speak to Akari."

Akari is surprised. "Me?" She can't imagine why.

"Yes, you." Adaman smiles kindly.

Once again, Akari is caught off guard. Adaman is giving her that look again. The one that suggests he might really like her. "Well, what's up?" She could kick herself for using a phrase from the future. It must sound very weird to the people around her.

Indeed, Adaman's brow furrows. He's never heard such a wording before, but he doesn't let it bother him. Instead, he walks up to Akari, grabbing her hand. A warm fuzzy feeling tingles through her. "Listen – that rift in space-time seems like it connects this world to a whole other world. That world might be where the Almighty Sinnoh himself resides – the true almighty Sinnoh that is. The one that rules over time." The emphasis on 'true' isn't missed by Akari. Adaman wants her to understand that his god is the right one. She simply nods. This isn't the time for a religious argument.

Adaman suddenly leans in, placing himself in Akari personal space. She can smell him – a mixture of pine wood and musk. "So, you fell through the space-time rift, that might mean you traveled through time – by Almighty Sinnoh's own power."

Akari stiffens. He knows she's met the god Pokémon. Sure, he thinks it's Dialga rather than Arceus, but the fact still remains. "That's just some people's speculation." It's a weak attempt to right herself. Gosh, this man smells good.

Adaman continues speaking. "Think of it. You must've been just swimming in his divine might. Well, I've got a favor to ask you, oh amazing time traveler. Don't just study Kleavor. Quell his frenzy." He truly believes she can do it. She can see it in his eyes. He must believe she's blessed by the Almighty Sinnoh or something. It could be the only explanation for this level of faith.

Laventon claps his hands. The sound causes Adaman to take a step back from Akari, releasing her hand. She lets out a nervous breath. Being that close to him did funny things to her heart. The professor says, "Well, you certainly caught us at a good time, young Adaman. We were just discussing our next steps regarding this whole Kleavor situation."

Adaman doesn't look too pleased at the interruption. "You must be that Galaxy Team scholar I've heard about. Good to meet you, Mr. Professor. Share some of that knowledge with me sometime." It's said with utter sarcasm.

Laventon doesn't care. He could see that the leader of the Dimond Clan was getting a little too close to Akari. "I would love to if you're willing to learn." It's a nice statement that's a righteous burn. Laventon is insinuating that Adaman is closed minded.

Adaman frowns, clearly unhappy with the insult. He chooses not to comment on it though, instead turning his attention back to Akari. "Now, let me elaborate a little on what I was saying. Those Pearl Clan types have a lot of respect for Kleavor. You've heard his title – Lord of the Woods."

Akari nods. "Yes, I understand he's a noble like Wyrdeer."

"That's right," Adaman says. "And I'm sure they'd rather get this under control, too, but it's hard for them to come right out and ask those of the Galaxy Team, of all people, for help." Akari can understand that. With relations being this strained, it couldn't have been easy. It's likely the only reason they even did it in the first place is because people got hurt.

"I understand," Akari states. "I'm going to try my best to help Kleavor."

Adaman smiles, leaning in again. "That's good, because the truth is, we in the Dimond Clan have a similar problem on our hands. A Pokémon dear to us, off in the mountains, has flown into the same type of frenzy as Kleavor."

Akari's eyes go wide. That's very unexpected. "Is your noble, okay?" She can't help but feel worried.

"For now," Adaman answers. "He isn't hurting anyone at least." He's pleased that she cares for Electrode first, rather than the dilemma his frenzy will cause.

"That's good, I guess." Akari looks at her comrades. They appear just as disturbed as she is concerning this unanticipated news.

Adaman looks at Cyllene. The woman is watching him like a hawk. He simply smiles innocently. "As you know, there's certainly bad blood between us and the Pearl Clan, but still…" He trails off, looking between Rei and Mai. It's clear his next statement is meant for them. "We've all got to share Hisui, and that means we ought to tackle our problems together."

Mai frowns. It's clear that she hadn't expected to be scolded. Rei seems just as stunned that he was defended by the head of the Dimond Clan no less. However, the woman quickly recovers. Mai states to Akari, "There aren't many capable of standing up to such powerful Pokémon. You're the best hope we've got."

Akari is taken aback. "No, that can't be right. I mean, don't get me wrong, I want to help, but I don't think I'm the strongest or even anything special. I can only do what I can do."

Mai is amused by Akari's modesty. The girl's Pokémon had forced evolution during their battle – whether it was due to Staravia's own shame or Akari's – it still happened. This type of event is extraordinarily rare. "You should have more confidence. I've seen you battle, and your devotion to your partners is true. I believe you truly are our best choice."

"I agree," Adaman adds.

Akari smiles weakly, still unsure if she can do this. "I'll do my best." It's all she can offer.

"By the way," Mai says, bringing Akari's attention back to her. "Kleavor's warden is a boy named Lian. He's a brilliant child but also a bit – well – sometimes brilliance can be blinding you know. He'll tell you all about his beloved Kleavor – whether you wish him to or not."

Adaman sighs, recalling the time Lian had cornered him. It had been more of an argument than a discussion, but it didn't matter. The boy went on for hours. "You'll find Lain at the Grandtree Arena. That's in the middle of the Heartwood Forest."

"Thank you." Akari bows. The information they'd given her was very helpful.

"Anyway," Adaman begins. "I'm sure you're up to the challenge, Akari. So, we'll be counting on you." He gives her another one of his gentle smiles. "But for now, it's farewell. I must go do something." He then turns to look at Cyllene. "Thank you for allowing me to intrude."

Cyllene inclines her head. "Of course."

"Let's go," Adaman says to Mai.

"Coming," she responds.

Akari watches them leave. She knows this isn't the last time she'll see Adaman. There's something there – something she needs to discourage if it's what she thinks it is. She turns back towards the interior of the office. Cyllene is looking at her expectantly. Akari asks, "So, what else do I need to know about this mission?"

Cyllene resumes her instruction. Akari takes it all in, secretly praying she'll live to see tomorrow.

.

.

.

Akari isn't sure what's going on exactly, but Mai had cornered her back in Jubilife Village, stating that she had something new for Akari. It occurred to her that Mai had stated that she'd reward Akari further for her help with the Alpha Kricketune. However, this is not what she'd expected at all.

Wyrdeer is standing before her with the Dimond Clan leader stroking his fluffy neck affectionately. Adaman looks her way, clearly expecting her arrival. Akari inclines her head in greeting. "Leader Adaman," she states respectfully.

"Akari." Adaman's tone is rather authoritative. "I though I told you to just call me by my name. I would rather not have formalities between us."

Akari is taken aback. She hadn't expected him to rebuke her. "If you really want me to, I will." What else can she say? Adaman is the leader of the Dimond Clan. She can't refuse a request like this simply because she wants to keep some distance between them.

"Yes, I would really like that." Adaman is giving her that promising smile again. Then the next moment, its gone, his attention back on Wyrdeer once more. The massive deer nuzzles his head into Adaman's chest, seeking affection. He grants it, scratching Wyrdeer on the forehead. Adaman speaks as he does this. "I spoke to Wyrdeer about what's been going on. He knows that you've been trekking all over the Fieldlands, seeking a way to quell Kleavor's frenzy. I believe he'll take you on as a ridder."

"Really?" Akari hadn't expected this. As an outsider, being permitted to ride one of the Dimond Clan's nobles is an extraordinary privilege. It also makes her worry, as this type of thing could bring her much closer to Adaman if she isn't careful. She isn't sure how exactly, but her instincts are screaming, "Warning!"

Adaman has resumed stroking Wyrdeer's fluffy neck. "I'm rather impressed that you're willing to go so far to help a Pokémon. You're not a part of my clan or even the Pearl Caln, and after hearing that…" He sighs, looking at her with adoration. "I think you're a remarkable woman. It's only fitting that one such as you be granted permission." Akari's cheeks heat up even more, this time with flustered heat. She's never been spoken to like this before, nor has an attractive man ever called her a woman. It makes her feel rather feminine.

Mai is walking towards them, a Leafeon right beside her. Munchlax, worn out from their walk to Deertrack Heights, is taking a quick nap. Mai is nearly to them when she says, "Ridding Wyrdeer is a gift from Adaman. It's a great honor. I trust you appreciate it." She crosses her arms, appearing proud. Giving Adaman credit for this idea can only lead to good things. He's giving her a slight frown though. Adaman hadn't wanted to mislead Akari like this.

Akari bows. "Thank you Adaman. I'm greatly in your debt."

Adaman finds himself feeling uncomfortable. "This idea was a group effort." He backtracks a little on Mai's fib, earning himself a glare. "If you recall, Mai wanted to reward you further for your efforts with Kricketune. He was a troublemaker, and thanks to you, one that won't bother us again."

"This is too much!" Akari is quick to counter. "I mean, I just did what had to be done. This type of reward is too much for simply capturing a Kricketune. It doesn't matter that it was an alpha."

"I disagree," Adaman refutes. "You're now seeking a way to help Kleavor. That makes you more than worthy in my eyes." He looks up at Wyrdeer. "Don't you agree?" The massive deer inclines his head. It's clear he thinks Akari's actions are worthy of praise as well.

Akari isn't sure what to think. This type of privilege – it's major. She finds herself bowing again. "I really can't thank you enough. If you ever need anything, just ask." It's really the only way she can show her true appreciation in this moment. She just hopes offering such doesn't come back to bite her in the butt later. Owing such a massive favor to the Dimond Clan leader could put her at a great disadvantage later.

"Hay Mai." Adaman's attention shifts back to their companion. "Can you please grab the Celestica Flute we brought?" Akari looks at Adaman curiously. She's wondering why he'd want a flute of all things.

"Of course." Mai turns away from them, heading towards a pair of grazing Rapidash. They're both in full tack, with large saddle bags laid across their hips. Akari had noticed them when she first arrived – their blazing manes and tails are hard to miss – before becoming distracted by Wyrdeer. Mai wandered over to the left one, digging around in the saddle bag. She pulls out two white flutes. Akari watches as Mai returns.

Adaman speaks, drawing her attention back to him. "Consider this a gift from me."

"What?" Akari still doesn't understand. Why are they now giving her this flute? She's never played one before, and even if she had, they wouldn't know that. Akari finds herself questioning Adaman before she can stop herself. "You're giving me a flute? Why?" She cringes. She sounds so ungrateful.

Adaman doesn't seem to care. Perhaps he even expected the question. "These flutes are used to summon our nobles to our sides."

Now it makes sense. Akari nods. "Okay." Although, she can't help but wonder about this instrument. If Wyrdeer is far away, how is he supposed to hear it?

"Here you go." Mai has made it back them, handing one of the two flutes over to Akari. She takes it, examining the instrument. It's not pure white like she first thought; there's a strange iridescent coating on the wood that sparkles like opal in the sunlight.

Adaman speaks, "This particular had belonged to me, I'm going to give it to you because I don't play." There's a slight blush on his cheeks that wasn't there a moment ago. He almost looks a little embarrassed.

Mai laughs, enjoying the moment. It's rare for Adaman to be concerned about what others think, but this is Akari. He doesn't want to look like a fool in front of her. Mai smirks. Opportunities like this don't come around very often. "Go on, little brother, tell her how you can't play a single note."

Adaman glares harshly at Mai. Yeah, he's not happy at all with Mai's candid behavior. "Why are you teasing me?"

"Am I though?" Mai sounds incredibly amused. "I didn't think stating facts was considered teasing."

Adaman huffs, showing his annoyance. "Whatever." He looks back at Akari. They've started wasting time. "The Celestica Flutes are a gift from the Almighty Sinnoh himself. It's rumored that they possess his divine might within them."

"That's right," Mai adds. "I believe that it's this mysterious power that allows our nobles to hear our call even from the furthest distances. Remarkable, isn't it?"

"Yes." Akari must agree. This also answers her previous curiosity. However, this raises another in her mind. "So, let's say I needed Wyrdeer's help outside of the Obsidian Fieldlands, would he be allowed to come?"

"Of course," Adaman answers. "I personally prefer that he just stay by your side for the whole journey. There's a lot of danger out in the Hisuian wilds, mostly in the form of aggressive alphas. It will make me feel better knowing that you're on Wyrdeer's back rather than trekking around on foot. I fear you might be too slow to get away if attacked."

Akari is touched. He's doing this to protect her. "Again, I really appreciate it." Something is stirring within her heart. She's forced to push down. Adaman isn't just kind, he's considerate too – only, she's noticing it's primarily with her. He isn't nice to everyone. In fact, she's noticed he likes to insult those within Galaxy Team. She appears to be the only exception. It's rather curious in her opinion. She's a part of Galaxy Team after all.

Adaman continues, "You're welcome," before turning to Mai. "Play Wyrdeer's melody for her."

Mai says brings her flute to her lips. "Play close attention to the notes I play."

Akari nods, watching intently. The melody is short and unusual to the ears, but Akari can feel the mystical quality that's emitted. Wyrdeer responds by bellowing. He felt it too. Adaman smiles up at the deer, patting his neck to soothe him.

Mai says, "Give it a try."

"Okay." Akari places the flute to her own lips, attempting to copy Mai's elegant finger pattern as she blows into the mouthpiece. She ends up having a lot more difficulty than expected with finding the right holes. She frowns. "That sounded horrible." The first attempt was an utter failure.

"That's alright." Mai is encouraging. "Everyone struggles in the beginning. I'll play it for you again." She places the flute to her lips once more, replaying the notes a little more slowly. Wyrdeer bellows in response.

Akari tries to mimic it a second time. The notes produced are far from perfect. However, the right melody is correct. Wyrdeer responds, bellowing loudly. Akari senses a connection has formed between his heart and hers. It's a strange feeling she's never felt before, not even with her own Pokémon.

"Very good." Mai claps her hands in praise. "As you can see, it doesn't have to be flawless. You just need to think of Wyrdeer and play the appropriate notes."

Wyrdeer nods his massive head, agreeing. He then unexpectedly starts stomping his feet. The behavior startles both Mai and Adaman. They've never seen him act in such a manner before. Mai appears extremely worried. "Wyrdeer, are you okay?"

Wyrdeer stops stomping. He lowers his head to the ground, picking up a lavender colored rectangular plate in his mouth. Akari's eyes go wide. It's a Mind Plate. She can't believe Wyrdeer has it. "Where did you get that?" In modern times, there's seventeen documented plates. Eight are held by the Peal Clan while the Dimond Clan holds the other nine. That's in the future though. Adaman and Mai seem perplexed by the plate. It's obvious they've never seen one before.

Mai inquires, "What is it?"

Adaman is also curious. "And is it connected to the Almighty Sinnoh?"

Akari sighs. She's stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's time to tell some half-truths. She won't admit that Arceus is the true Almighty Sinnoh, but she can be forthcoming on other things. "Yes, it's believed this plate, and sixteen others, are all connected to the Almighty Sinnoh. However, it's not really understood how or why. It's just speculation."

"Perhaps," Mai is thinking hard on this. "But Wyrdeer is descended from a Pokémon blessed by the Almighty Sinnoh. By giving you this plate, it means your blessed yourself." She wants Akari to know just how special she is.

"I don't know about that." Akari doesn't think she's blessed at all. If anything, Arceus cursed her by bringing her here. "But, as you guys already suspect, I am from another place in time. I won't say when or reveal anything more than that though."

Adaman shrugs. "I could care less about the future or past at this point." He's only concerned about her connection with the Almighty Sinnoh. It's a real treat to hear her openly admit it.

"Agreed," Mai is also thinking along the same lines. "Tell me, what is your exact relationship with the Almighty Sinnoh?"

"There isn't one." Akari hates to be so blunt. This is their god, and they're seeing her as something she's not. "I had no previous connection to the Almighty Sinnoh before this. I was simply dragged to Hisui without consent. I was then given a single mission: seek out all Pokémon. It's nothing more than that."

"Hardly." Mai is quick to counter. "The Almighty Sinnoh picked you and set you to task. It might be small, but that's a relationship." Akari sighs. Mai is right. It's small but it's still something.

"But why seek out all Pokémon?" Adaman inquires. It's an odd request.

Akari shrugs. "I'll admit, I was a little thrown off by the request. However, I've got a theory. If I start collecting the Pokémon of this region, my true purpose for being here will likely come to light. I just need to keep collecting."

"Hum." Mai supposed this is a good theory; plus, if Akari completes this Pokédex, it should help her educate those fools within Galaxy Team. "Although the idea of capturing every single type of Pokémon within Hisui for the sake of research is bothersome, I can see the benefit to it. A written encyclopedia to study from would be very helpful."

"I agree." Adaman crosses his arms. "However, right now, we are all wasting time. We should begin your first riding lesson, Akari. Up you go!"

Akari looks at Adaman, then Wyrdeer. "I know how to ride."

"Do you?" Mai inquires. "You're ridden a Wyrdeer?"

"Well…no," Akari is forced to admit. "But I've ridden my Rapidash. I used to travel all over on horseback." It feels like a good counter argument.

Mai shakes her head, deeming it otherwise. "The riding technique for Wyrdeer is considerably different from that of a Rapidash. The strid of deer Pokémon is more of a leap than a sway. If you're not careful, you'll be jerked around awkwardly, causing you to either injure yourself, or fall off. I don't desire either of those things for you."

Akari supposed Mai is right. "Well, I suppose." A single lesson couldn't hurt.

Mai destroys that theory. "Munchlax is still napping, so I'll let Adaman teach you how to ride."

"What?" Akari's eyes widen. She looks at Adaman. "I'm sure he has better things to do than to give me a riding lesson." She isn't sure why, but something is telling her that spending time alone with Adaman is unwise. He's looking at her right now with an affectionate expression.

Adaman cuts in. "Usually, I am too busy for things like this. However, currently, I'm just hanging around the area waiting for anything to happen. This means I have more time to spare than usual and I'd loathe to waste it." He then smiles mischievously. "Besides, I would like to get to know you better."

Akari swallows. This seems more dangerous than curing Kleavor of his frenzy. "I just don't want to inconvenience you."

"Akari," Mai calls gently. "Please let Adaman be your instructor. We desperately need you to be successful with this mission as quickly as possible. Please put Kleavor first." Mai is clever, attempting to use Kleavor's situation to sway Akari. It works.

"I understand." Akari nods. Kleavor does need her help. She shouldn't let her personal issues interfere.

Adaman guides Wyrdeer to Akari's side. This will be the first time they will be alone, and he's going to make the best of it. He needs to get a foothold on her affections before someone else tries to move in on her. She needs to see him as something more than just the leader of the Dimond Clan. "We should head on out."

Akari looks at the height of the stirrups of Wyrdeer saddle. They're heigh, but she's experienced with mounting. "I'm going to leap." It a warning to Wyrdeer. The massive deer nods, understanding her plight. He knows he's big.

Akari leaps, throwing her upper body onto the saddle before pulling herself on up. She threw her left leg over as she adjusted her seat in the saddle. Wyrdeer maneuvers his footing to help accommodate the added weight. He then snorts as he looks back at his mount. Akari is lighter than expected.

Adaman walks up to Wyrdeer's side, standing near Akari's left leg. He smiles up at her, looking rather happy. "You look good up there. I'm pleased we could do this for you." He then pats Wyrdeer's strong neck showing him affection.

Akari can't help but smile back. "I'm so thankful. I was originally going to ride Growlithe once he's evolved, but this is great too. I don't have to wait now."

"Leaf!" The cry is unexpected. Adaman responds to it immediately, looking at his Leafeon. He's standing a little away from them next to Rapidash. "Leaf! Leafeon!" He'd retrieved Adaman's own mount for him.

Adaman nods. "I guess it time to go." He pats Wyrdeer one more time then moves over to his Rapidash. He climbs into the saddle gracefully, looking like a pro rider. It's obvious he's done this his whole life. He looks back at Akari. "Are you ready?"

"I am," she answers.

"Then let's head out." Adaman pulls on the reins gently, while clicking his tongue. Rapidash jerks into motion, eager to move.

Wyrdeer starts to move himself, not waiting for the command. Akari isn't bothered, simply waving at Mai as they walk by. "Bye! I'll see you around."

Mai inclines her head. The plan had worked out great. She waves back at Akari. "Have fun!" The poor girl has no idea what's going on.

.

.

.

"Ouch!" Akari cries out.

Adaman looks at back at Akari worriedly from atop his Rapidash. "Are you alright?" He pulls on the reins, spinning the fire horse back around. The stallion nickers, annoyed at the sudden halt but Adaman doesn't care. They'd been riding to Heartwood Forest for the better part of the day. He's certain Akari is tired by now. Wyrdeer certainly is and Leafeon too since he has been trailing behind them on foot.

Akari is rubbing her backside. "Yeah, I just landed wrong." Wyrdeer had been running alongside Rapidash down the narrow grassy pathway. It's usually used by wild Pokémon, so it has its hazards. This time it was in the form of an old fallen tree. Akari had assumed she was experienced enough to handle the leap since she's used to doing such things on her own Rapidash back home. She was wrong, resulting in her slamming her butt hard into the saddle.

Adaman, who's watching her closely, isn't convinced. "You look like you're in pain to me. The way you're hunched over tells me that you're hurting rather badly."

"No, I'm fine," Akari insists, trying to power through it. She can't afford to slow down now. There's too much to do. "I'm tougher than I look." She attempts to return to the proper riding position only to cringe as her back spasms wildly in protest. This really sucks.

"No, you're not." Adaman isn't fooled. "We're going to stop here for the night so your back can get the proper rest it needs before heading on to Grandtree Arena. We've already made it to the outskirts of Heartwood Forest. You're not that far from your destination so you can afford a little rest." He's using his leadership tone. This isn't up for argument.

Akari looks around. The trees have grown thicker. "Have we really traveled that far?" It's a little unexpected but then again, she's been riding Wyrdeer. He's a lot faster than she first expected.

"Yes." Adaman points to a large waterway that's visible a little further down the ravine. It empties into a massive harbor filled with brackish water. Upstream, there's a Bibarel dam that is surrounded by said Pokémon. This is where they'll cross. "Heartwood Forest is just on the other side of the river."

Akari now notices the authoritative tone he's using with her. However, she's not a part of the Dimond Clan. She's not going to let him boss her around. "Look, I know you want me to rest but I don't have time. The commander is counting on me, and so is the Pearl Clan."

"Well, that's half true." The tone Adaman uses is slightly sarcastic. It's not directed at Akari though. He often finds himself speaking this way when the Pearl Clan is mentioned. "Your commander is hoping for success, I'll agree to that. Irida on the other hand, will be looking for any reason to state that you're incompetent for the task. This allows the Pearl Clan to turn you away without appearing uncooperative."

Akari frowns. This is unexpected and confusing. "Why would I be turned away? I mean, Irida, just this morning, stated that the Pearl Clan needs some help with this. It's why she agreed to have me investigate in the first place."

"It wasn't genuine." Adaman is about to give Akari her first lesson in clan politics. "This situation has trampled on Irida's pride as a clan leader. She's frustrated and has been cornered by both the commander and me several times. We're basically breathing fire down her neck about how to handle Kleavor. If she'd refused our help, the political downfall would have been catastrophic for the Pearl Clan."

Politics was never a strong subject for Akari. She needs more of an explanation. "I don't get it. If refusing help is bad for the Pearl Clan, why is she attempting to get rid of me now?"

"It's a political maneuver," Adaman answers. "A stupid one, but it's one, nevertheless."

Akari shakes her head. "I'm still not following."

"Basically," Adaman begins. "Irida is using a form of deceit to appear cooperative when she's not. The truth is that the Pearl Clan doesn't really want outside help. They want to handle this Kleavor business all on their own. Their pride demands it."

Akari is starting to understand a little bit. "You said it's a stupid maneuver for her to make. Why?"

Adaman considers the question. "I'm assuming your referring to the political ramifications of this, correct?" Akari nods, realizing her question wasn't clear. Adaman isn't bothered, simply continuing, "As I previously stated, Irida is looking for any reason to send you away. If she's successful, she believes that she'll be able to state that we failed to send someone adequate to investigate. In her mind, she thinks she can then refuse interference without political consequences at that point, but she's wrong. As much as it pains me, I will put Kleavor down if he threatens my clan's safety. I'll even do the same to our own noble, Electrode, if I must."

Akari shivers. That wasn't a threat, it was a promise. Adaman isn't just the leader of the Dimond Clan, but their protector as well. He'll really kill a Pokémon to keep his people safe. It's a savage approach, but very logical. "I can't afford to fail then."

"Exactly." Adaman dismounts Rapidash. The aura around him loses all severity, returning to its more relaxed state. "We should set up camp before it gets dark."

Akari looks up at the skyline. The sun is getting low. However, it occurs to her that she'll be spending the night alone with Adaman in the woods. She finds herself blushing a little at the prospect. Adaman doesn't seem to notice as he's already hard at work unsaddling Rapidash. She can't help but watch the way his muscles move under his clothing. Adaman is a very attractive man.

"Leaf."

Akari looks down to see Adaman's partner, Leafeon, sitting by Wyrdeer's front legs. She smiles at him. "It's nice to meet you."

The leafy Pokémon sways his tail looking rather happy. "Leaf! Leafeon!" He'd seen the way Akari had just looked at his human companion. "Leaf!" It makes him happy. Akari will make a good mate for his partner.

Akari dismounts, her legs protesting. It's been a while since the last time she rode a Pokémon; her muscles are sore. As for Adaman, he works quick, having already removed Rapidash's saddle and is brushing him with a bristled comb. The fire horse nickers happily. This makes Akari smile for a moment before she reaches into her satchel, pulling out several Pokéballs. She tosses them, revealing Staravia, Shinx, Dewott, and Eevee. "Okay you four. I want you to go out and find us some firewood and barriers. Can you all handle that?" The Pokémon all cry out in affirmative. "Then try to be back by dark. Don't make me worry." The Pokémon all turn and dash away in different directions.

"Leafeon." Adaman calls. The leafy fox looks back at his partner. "You should go with them and help."

"Leaf!" Leafeon nods before heading out himself.

Akari turns to Adaman, who's finished with Rapidash. The fire horse is now happily grazing on some grass nearby. Adaman approaches her, stating, "I'll take care of Wyrdeer as well. You should go have a seat and relax."

"Thank you." It's all Akari can say. She's in no condition to help with the heavy lifting. However, she doesn't go rest like she's been instructed. She might be hurt but she isn't an invalid. There are still some things she can do to help that are not labor intensive. She could make a fire, cook dinner, or even pick where they'll set up camp tonight.

Akari starts examining the nearby tree line with this in mind. She spots a small area that's rather open with a large flat rock perfect for sitting. The ground itself is mostly dirt with some patches of grass making it ideal for sleeping. This appears to be a great place to set up. There's even thick underbrush nearby that will help block the frigid night wind.

Akari pulls out Growlithe's Pokéball, tossing it. The puppy appears in front of her. "I need you to dig us small fire pit. Are you okay with that?"

"Ruff!" Growlithe flexes his paws. He just needs to know where she wants it.

Akari points to a large patch of dirt near the flat rock. "There's a good place."

Growlithe, eager to please, rushes over and starts ripping up the ground, making dirt fly everywhere.

Adaman appears beside Akari, two sets of saddle bags draped over his shoulders. He places them near the ground where Growlithe is digging the fire pit. The puppy pauses his work for a moment to study this stranger. Adaman smiles at him. "I'm not a threat to Akari, I promise." Growlithe snorts in response, letting Adaman know he'll be watched all night. This causes him to chuckle. These little dogs are terribly protective of their partners.

Adaman looks back at Akari. "You picked a good spot."

"Thank you," Akari responds. She's glad she could help but their work isn't done just yet. "We need water."

Already on it," Adaman informs. "I sent Rapidash and Wyrdeer to collect it. I gave them our waterskins to refill since I know they'll head that way soon enough on their own."

"That's true," Akari says. "I know I get thirsty when I've been running around all day myself."

Adaman nods in agreement. He then grabs one of his saddle bags, pulling out an old-fashioned sling shot. Akari's eyes go wide. Adaman is planning to hunt for their dinner. "There's a small Bidoof colony nearby," he says. "I plan to nab one for them for us to eat tonight."

Akari doesn't say anything, rather unused to the concept. She's a modern girl who's always went to the store for her meat; even now in Jubilife Village, she still shops for her protein. However, for the native people of Hisui, hunting is a way of life. It's how they survived this harsh land for hundreds of years. They also use every part of the Pokémon they kill, leaving nothing to waste. Akari also thinks it's important for her to note that Galaxy Team has done the exact opposite. They'd killed in excess and often left the entire Pokémon they slaughtered out in the sun to rot; not even harvesting the meat. It was this behavior that led to the big rift that formed between them and the natives.

Adaman notices the silence. He looks at Akari curiously. "Is something the matter?"

"No, not really," Akari responds. "I've just never had Bidoof before."

Adaman finds that strange. These Pokémon are everywhere and are a staple of most diets. "Well, tonight is your lucky night. I'll nab one quickly and show you how to cook it properly." Adaman then leaves without looking back, leaving Akari staring after him.

Akari lets out a sigh. It's been a long day and there's still a fire to build. "Come on Growlithe, let's gather some sticks and dry underbrush. We should make sure the fire is going before he gets back.

"Ruff!" Growlithe happily follows her. He's always happy to help his favorite person.
