Guess what holiday is next month? Halloween!

I can't choose between this story, and a story called The Departed Games, so you get to decide!

Read this prologue, read the other Halloween prologue, and vote/comment on your favorite before September 30th 2023.

If you find this story way later and it didn't win, so it wasn't continued. You can comment and pressure me to continue it sooner (yes, it will be continued eventually, one way or another)

With that said, enjoy Downfall!

...

I can't believe it's been almost a year.

Almost a year since everything changed.

An enormous, wolf-like, creature ambled out of the thick forest to the edge of a hill overlooking a vast plain. He howled at the bright moon overhead, calling the rest of his pack out into the open.

The planet has been altered, most of the inhabitants have been transformed, even I've changed. I used to be a blue hedgehog with incredible speed and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. Now I'm a werewolf (or werehog, if that's what you prefer) with stretchy arms and a fierce loyalty to my pack.

The pack of giant werewolves rushed down the hill and across the vast landscape; Sonic at the head.

*Sigh* How did this happen? Better question: How did I let this happen? It was my job to protect this planet; to stop Eggman when he put an evil plan in motion. The one job I had, and I blew it big time.

But how could anyone have expected what came next? Much less prepare for it...

Sonic and his pack slowed when they reached a grove of trees, and started poking around the branches.

Eggman was always making bad choices, but this last one was the worst decision in the history of worst decisions. He trusted two suspicious (and might I add, odd) strangers when they came to him with two dark proposals.

One; carefully drain dark Gaia energy from a specific spot. Two; corrupt the chaos emeralds with an insane amount of negative energy. Use these two powers to conquer the world!

Bad idea! Very! Bad! Idea! You know what those energies will do to a person? I'll give you a clue; the dark Gaia energy is what transformed me into a werehog! It brings out the monster in you, and only the metal infused with light Gaia's energy can end your existence. Silver.

Heh, I once had a friend with that name...

Meanwhile, the negative chaos energy is no better. I don't mean when negative emotions like fear and anger corrupt you and you turn dark. No, I mean raw, unrestrained, negative chaos energy. You ever heard of vampires?

That much negative chaos energy flowing through their veins, turns them into the living dead. And they drink blood cause blood holds both negative and positive energy. The positive keeps them sane, and the negative keeps the positive from killing them.

What kills them is wood. Trees have an overwhelming amount of positive energy, without a drop of negative. Nature is so cool; and even when they're cut down; the positive energy remains.

When light challenges dark, light will always win!

...

Almost always.

Those two suspicious strangers who tricked Eggman? One was the human, werewolf leader: Wolfric. The other was the tenrec, vampire leader: Varia.

The two sides have been locked in war since the first vampire and werewolf; but the one thing they could agree on was that ordinary creatures should not rule the planet.

One truce. The first truce ever forged between a werewolf and vampire. They tricked Eggman, empowered their kind with the corresponding dark energy, and spread their influence throughout the globe.

I'd already been corrupted by dark Gaia energy once, so the release of energy hit me to. I lost control for one moment, and...

I spread the energy to Tails and Amy.

...

It's probably for the best. If I hadn't done it, someone else would have and who knows what would've happened to them.

Sonic reached one of his stretchy arms up and snatched a strange, purple fruit off a branch.

The release of negative energy also affected the environment. New plants; new behaviors in feral creatures; and worst of all, a dark haze surrounds the planet, blocking out the sun. We live in an endless night.

We don't know what happened to the rest of our friends, but we do know that we're not going to give in to our werewolf instincts. We don't kill and we don't eat meat.

Sonic passed the fruit to a grey werewolf.

We've found others who feel the same way. Werewolf instincts=bad. I'm now leading a pack of about 15. Our current goal? Survive and adapt.

Everyday I wake up hoping it was all a dream. Everyday I'm disappointed by harsh reality. Almost an entire year of harsh reality.

Someday.

Someday we'll have our old world back.

When? I don't know.

But someday.

*Wolf howl*
