References:
Me and Rug have so many quotes and references and inside jokes, collected both from real life and from an onslaught of different fandoms over the years that now it seems as though half of our vocabulary is made up of them! XD Therefore, inevitably, many of them have worked their way into the story, both willingly and unwillingly. .
Here's your guide to what they were ..
Prologue โ "whose reach they could barely fathom"
I'm sure I've said this before, but I can never NOT hear the word "fathom" in Space Dad's voice (Megamind) ๐ญ
Chapter 1 โ "as though he was running through a field of flowers"
"through a field of wiLdFLoWeRS" .. yeh. Oliver and Company. No, I'm not proud of it.
Chapter 1 โ "standing on the bow of a nearby ship"
Not sure if this was a direct reference, or simply one thing that reminded me of another thing which reminded me of .. well, you get the picture. So much of my memories are just assorted and jumbled quotes. It's .. sad. Anyway, "on the bow of a ship, headed for a new land" (Hamilton: The Musical)
Chapter 1 โ "it was getting pretty stuffy in there"
The 102 Dalmatians PC game (which we practically grew up on). When you released your fellow puppy brethren from their wooden crate, often one would say "it was gettin' kind of stuffy in there".
Chapter 2 โ "the chiselled-out freight passages, built hundreds of years ago, during a historical era when they'd been needed for ventilation and construction"
These are real! And so, so cool. Just Google "Chicago freight tunnels". You'll drop into a rabbit hole of such underground splendour that you'll be dreaming in concrete (seriously though, check it out, it's incredible).
Chapter 2 - "he's more of a little-picture guy"
"I have a little picture". Pietro Maximoff. . Don't ask me why. It was probably to get a groan out of someone, but as per usual, in the end, it elicited the most displeasure from none other than .. myself.
Chapter 2 - "They cooked it up in one of their labs"
"[That depends] on what kind of dinosaur they cooked up in that lab". Jurassic World, Owen Grady.
It wouldn't be a Terra Nova story without at least one Jurassic Park series quote, would it?
Speaking of which, I literally cannot COUNT how many times we quoted Claire's "Don't we all?" line during the course of editing this thing. I can't.
But it was a jolly lot. And now it has become a classic phrase in our house. Forever.
Chapter 3 - "Dang Deseck's gettin' earlier and earlier"
Named after Philippe Deseck, a stunt actor that played an actual Sixer on the show, this random trebuchet operator apparently once broke into the lab with Carter to try and steal the Box (Ep: Nightfall)!
Chapter 3 - "the lack of deciduous trees"
Honestly, I will never not associate the term "deciduous trees" with that kid from the pilot episode of Eureka ..
"Make a left at the stand of deciduous trees."
"'Deciduous"?"
"It means they shed their leaves once a year."
"Thanks, Einstein. I knew that."
"I'm an Oppenheimer. Einsteins live on Fourth."
๐
Chapter 3 - "through the soft rain of snow drifting down from overhead"
Aaah, this. Believe it or not, I've never actually seen snow (okay, now tell me the truth โ was it obvious? It was obvious, wasn't it?). But ever since I was little, I've absolutely loved the Silver Brumby books by Elyne Mitchell, and the word pictures she painted of shadowy horses flittering through a sparse forest, their hoofbeats muted by the freshly fallen blanket of snow .. *chef's kiss* Those kinds of memories never leave you.
Chapter 4 - "'We are one'"
The Lion King 2 (Simba's Pride). It's the name of a song, and also a key quote from the end of the movie .. one that actually seems to have become much more relevant of late ..
Chapter 5 - "the whole blasted shelf's gonna start breaking off right under our feet"
"The whole damn shelf is breaking off!" The Day After Tomorrow (hehe, that old classic movie).
Is this the first time I've quoted it in one of my books? .. probably not.
Is it the last time? .. probably not.
Chapter 5 - "infernal devices"
The third book in the Mortal Engines series.
Chapter 5 - "the grating pulse of the machines"
Ah! Strangely similar to the Mortal Engines vibes, Whispers of a Machine (the video game). We played it for such a short time overall, but it left a weirdly tangible after-image. Speaking of video games (because you've come to the references section of an obscure fanfiction for gaming recommendations, naturally) โ the Syberia series is also great (and horrendously nostalgic).
Chapter 5 - ".. bye."
I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHY, but โ as infuriating as it is โ in my head, this ".. bye" always sounds like that scene on Jurassic World where Zach and Grey's mother is saying goodbye to Claire on the phone. ๐ญ Why ..
Chapter 6 - "you can basically send them wherever you want"
.. groans again
I swear, some of these must just keep recurring book after book (either that, or they live rent-free in my head CONSTANTLY), but anyway. I have absolutely no idea if this was an intentional reference, but I can't read it without thinking of THAT WOMAN off Jurassic Park III (Mrs. Kirby). What a legendary film (yes, I'm serious).
".. it's pretty much whatever we want."
Chapter 8 - "the hands of time"
Throwback reference to mine and Rug's first Terra Nova fanvideo โ "If Today Was Your Last Day". 3
Chapter 8 - "a sequence of searchlights and sirens blared to life outside"
Aw, this whole wartime-at-night scenario reminds me of the beginning of Peter Pan II (Return to Neverland). Talk about a childhood classic (I swear, we didn't watch as many movies as I'm making it sound like we did .. ).
Chapter 10 - "seeming to emanate from a collection of mangled trees"
Megamind. Well, Minion, to be precise. "It seems to be emanating from .. there .."
Chapter 10 - "They didn't care!"
Terribly different circumstances, but this reminds me so much of that line in Adventures in Odyssey
(Ep: Strange Boy in a Strange Land) ..
Jared: [proposes a conspiracy theory just crazy enough to be confused for a terrifying reality]
Sarah (sounding bored): "We don't care."
Jared (horrified): "You don't CARE?!"
Ah, Jared DeWhite ( aka, the best character in radio history), we miss ye.
he didn't die, we just .. miss him
Chapter 10 - "He never seemed to feel the cold."
PFFT. "Wear it for my sake. If you were ill, who would look after me? I don't feel the cold." This is Philip off Princess of Thieves (a movie that was astronomically better than its predecessor, "Prince of Thieves" โ what an abomination, I can't believe some people actually LIKE it! Now you want to talk good Robin Hood adaptations, check out the BBC series. Granted, it's not for everyone .. but it should be) ใ(๏ฟฃโฝ๏ฟฃใ)
Chapter 10 - "she's like a robot"
wheezes I tried .. I tried so hard not to put this in .. but I had to. ๐ญ
This was NOT an intentional reference, I swear. But sometimes, these things just creep in .. uninvited.
And we must shamefully confess to them.
"You're like some military robot, Frank!" (Yours, Mine & Ours)
There you have it.
- you have got to be kidding me. I just checked the references in Eye of the Storm for something, and I LITERALLY QUOTED THIS EXACT SAME THING BACK THEN.
Whyyyyyyyy is Military Robot Frank so ICONIC?! เฎเฏฐเฎ This is so awful .. ๐ญ
Chapter 11 - "The shopping centre was huge."
AhH, this place reminds me so much of that scene on The Day After Tomorrow (yes, I know I already referenced that movie, bear with me) where Spoiler Alert that guy "drops in to do some shopping" .. 6-6
Chapter 11 - "we'll beat it by ten percent"
ROFL, I FORGOT ABOUT THIS
This .. ahem. This is a reference to an old but still relevant Bunnings Warehouse ad. Ah, Bunnings. Truly an Australian institution. I guess lowest prices really are just the beginning ..
Chapter 11 - "The gears in her mind seemed to be whirring away as they spoke."
"Get the old brain humming again, wHirRR" โ Dr. Tenma, off the Astro Boy Movie 2009
(aka, the most obnoxious existing version of Dr. Tenma .. ๐ญ๐)
Chapter 11 - "They looked more or less exactly how one would expect any bully from the future to look"
In a word .. Biff.
Chapter 11 - "The movement was almost reverent in nature."
Hey, a reference within a reference. ๐ This is a callback to the time Lucas placed his hand on the old Portal Terminus at the end of Within (Ep 11 of Terra Nova).
Chapter 11 - "He's a Kaprosuchus. He doesn't have a name."
This is a reference to the time Taylor said to call the Kap "Ricky", a concept which horrified me so much that I cut Taylor off from mentioning it again myself! It's also a reference to the line in the "Larry's High Silk Hat" song (VeggieTales) where the scallion guy says, "They've never given me a name. I've been around since show one and I still don't have a name .." Tsk. Poor guy. Maybe we should call him Ricky.
Chapter 11 - "It's the symbol for Hope Plaza."
This was actually based on the real symbol of Hope Plaza (in the show). If you Google "Terra Nova Hope Plaza Symbol", you'll see at least two disjointed rings over a background that looks like two opposite sides of the moon, with a simple horizontal funnel graphic that appears to represent time travel.
Chapter 11 - "She's just a baby."
Ergh! Santa Clause 2, talking about Chet (one of the reindeer in training). Curtis says, "Yeah, but he's got a lot of crash time. He's just a baby .."
Yes, I could probably quote that entire conversation from memory by now, seeing as we watch the movies every year. No, once again, I am not proud of the fact. o(๏ฟฃโฝ๏ฟฃ )o
Chapter 11 - "There's a train set in a box in the corner. Came through the blast practically unscathed."
Ahh .. เฒฅ_เฒฅ This โ sorry, that was an unnecessarily creepy emoji. ๐๐
Anyway, this is a hint that the house Lucy and Zayne use as a hideout is Anderson and Sienna's old home. Located decently close to Hope Plaza, it blew up when Anderson activated a portal inside and then imploded it after sending Sienna through. The train set that they used to play with, however, miraculously survived .. plot armour because the author unashamedly loves trains cough
Chapter 11 - "A visionary. That's what she likes to call herself anyway."
HA. Ahem. This is a reference to Putnam "the visionary" off Eureka (Ep. 3).
This is another show we've watched so often that the characters almost feel like extended family members.
To be honest, my family's probably weird enough to fit in with the townsfolk pretty well .. yes, I am including myself in that assessment.
Chapter 12 - "No, to fall in the nests."
Whyyy .. does this have the same essence as that conversation on the Lizzie McGuire movie:
"Have you even started on your summer reading list?"
"I finished it."
"You read 11 books?"
"I mean I read the list."
Hahaa .. so stupid. But still funny. ๐
Chapter 12 - "Skye glanced up again, almost finding herself smacked in the face as his lab coat caught the wind."
Serious Okabe Rintarou vibes .. the lab coat part, that is, not the .. getting smacked in the face part.
El. Psy. Kongroo!
Chapter 12 - "Not for the first time, Skye wondered at how alike the two were."
Just in case it wasn't obvious, this was a callback to the scene in the first episode of Terra Nova where Skye and Josh are peeling fruts: "Yeah, you guys are pretty different. Pretty different." Skye (being sarcastic, obviously)
Chapter 12 - "patted the soldier's shoulder"
Urgh, we (me and Rug) have this irritating joke based on how difficult it is to say the words "soldier's shoulder" one after the other. Sometimes the phrase is necessary, sometimes it's just annoying enough to use on purpose.
Chapter 12 - "Trying to stick your busybody nose in where it wasn't invited, more like"
This "more like" sounds like Rachel Lynd's signature "that's what" .. in my head, at least (๏ฟขฯ๏ฟข)
Chapter 12 - "Lydia"
I think this was a reference to Lydia off Pride and Prejudice .. though I'm not sure why. Maybe my mind wanted a name for an irritating person and immediately connected the prompt with "Lydia"!
Chapter 12 - "And the people back home'll worry about us if we don't show up."
This was triggering really vague and annoying memory bells in my head that I JUST. COULDN'T. PLACE.
At first, I thought maybe I was thinking of the line "My Grandma'll notice if I don't even show up at all" off Big Fat Liar, but I don't .. think it was. All I can hear is "She'll worry about me if I don't shOw uP" and I have no CLUE what it's off. It's driving me nuts. If anyone out there happens to know, let me in on the secret! Plz ..
Chapter 12 - "The dormant mouth of Snakehead Mountain opened wide and swallowed them whole"
nudges you Remember Skye's dream from Eye of the Storm Chapter 37: Disturbing the Peace ? (ยฌโฟยฌ)
Chapter 12 - "instead of helping me, you're only making my job harder!"
Are you- HOW many of these Santa Clause references are hidden away down here?!
"Instead of trying to make it work, it feels like you're tryna make things worse!" - SC3
Chapter 12 - "the twilight could be very deceptive"
"It could be rain on the glass. It can be very deceptive!" - Julian, off the Famous Five 1978 (Ep 1).
Man, that show was .. yeah. That show was everything. ๐ irrational affection for an objectively mediocre adaptation
Chapter 13 - "no bars anymore, no fences"
Lady and the Tramp 2 โ "a world without walls and fences, that's exactly where I want to be"
A sentiment that seems to have been drilled down and cemented into the core of my personality. Whyyyyyyyyyyy can't we all live on acreages in 19th Century England? ๐ถ Tell me whyyyyy .. I don't understaaannnddd .. ๐ถ
Chapter 13 - "the ancient noble grey stone of the passage"
This whole setting (before we hit the yellow stone and it took on a more "let's explore the pyramids" vibe) was probably an unintentional love letter to my Abbey Girls days (a really old series of books about girls dancing and exploring the passages of an old stone abbey). Kids these days don't like that sort of thing, but I still love it. Mystery, family, pets, jewels, midnight feasts. Those books had it all. They'll always be classics in my .. book. (โฬฟฤนฬฏโฬฟ ฬฟ)
Chapter 13 - "l ike the gaps in a toothless smile"
Toothless!
Chapter 13 - "Josh arched his entire upper body sideways to stare down disdainfully at her."
.. dude, this has gotta be another VeggieTales reference. The most iconic thing about those vegetables was their terrifying ability to warp and stretch their bodies as they arched from side to side .. like those rubbery pencils (which, by the way, were horrible to hold and absolutely useless to try and write with .. but novel, nevertheless).
Chapter 13 โ "Richard Julien"
The Richard part was a nod to Richard Maxwell off Adventures in Odyssey. The Julien was probably a reference to Julian Kirrin from the Famous Five. Also to my sister, who we used to compare to FF Julian โ she even went by the name online for a while! I guess I can say that now that she's no longer using it ..
Chapter 14 - "the Terra Nova logo"
Like the Hope Plaza logo, this too is real (well, as real as a logo designed for a fictional show goes ..).
Chapter 14 - "And it took out the Pearson home!"
Are you-?! ANOTHER Santa Clause reference?!
You know what, forget it. I give up. This is now a Santa Clause fanfic disguised as a Terra Nova one.
Merry Christmas. x]
"Hope you have been good this year, cause it looks like Santa just took out the Pearson home! Incoming!"
Chapter 14 โ "princess"
This is both a reference to Lost in Space (Don calls Judy "princess") and a reminder that Carter also calls Sienna the same thing. Evidently it caught on, seeing as Josh is now using it!
Chapter 14 - ""It was nearing twilight, and the sun had just started to drop below the horizon .."
Nooo, this sounds so much like "It was a dark, blustery afternoon in spring, and the city of London was chasing a small mining town across the dried-out bed of the old North Sea."
It's the first sentence in the Mortal Engines book series (and also the last, if I remember correctly). ๐ญ Still makes me want to cry when I hear it (or .. read it, as it were).
^ speaking of which, that "as it were" always reminds me of Chester the Rat on the 102 Dalmatians PC game .. referenception. We could go on forever.
^ "I could go on forever, baby." Home Alone 2
Chapter 14 - "I wanted [a sibling] more than anything in the world.", "I know."
This is a reference to that awkward section of Occupation/Resistance where Lucas was calling Skye his "sister" =3
Chapter 14 โ "He loved me .. but I think deep down I knew the truth. He needed a son more than he needed a daughter."
To be brutally honest, this is a reflection on the way I always felt growing up. My parents had four daughters (of which I was one, obviously ๐), but I always felt that, even though our dad loved us to the moon and back, he wanted a son the most, and was always sad he wasn't able to have one. I think โ probably subconsciously more often than not โ we all tried to fill the gap in our own way. Don't get me wrong, we have a great relationship with our dad, but there was always a section of his heart I felt we could never reach. Still, we did our best. (เนโขฬใ โขฬ)ูโง
Chapter 14 - "he could've been anything he wanted to be"
"He's a Pretender, a genius who can become anything he wants to be" - "The Pretender" TV show. Another if somewhat dubious on occasion family favourite.
Chapter 14 - "I'm sure you are!"
Kylo Ren, off the Last Jedi. ใ(๏ฟฃโฝ๏ฟฃใ) Ruggie loves his quotes, she'd quote him night and day if she could.
^ a blatant lie, if slightly true
Chapter 14 - "And so I cried and I screamed .. and I watched."
"And she slipped and she fell .. and she flew .." - Guy, The Croods .. . .. why do we do this to ourselves ..
Chapter 15 - "the toy-like quality"
ERRRRGHHH screeches This is yet ANOTHER Santa Clause 2 reference .. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ I hate myself.
Chapter 15 โ "A-N-D"
Being Sienna's guardian's old home, the "And-" on the door used to be "Anderson". Mira never saw the house in person, but she may have recognised the burnt-out inside in some distant corner of her mind from the video calls she'd made to Sienna in the past.
Chapter 15 - "do or do not, there is no try"
Hehe. Yoda. Naturally.
Chapter 15 - "Malcolm nodded. ".. no.""
This combination of a seemingly affirmative gesture combined with a negative statement always reminds me so much of Henry Deacon (off Eureka). It's basically his calling card (as far as my memory of him is concerned).
Chapter 15 โ "Anaximander"
A Greek philosopher, sometimes called "the founder of astronomy".
Chapter 16 - "they felt neither hunger or fear"
"Not joy, not hunger, not even fear .. as if I'm dreaming. Or in my grave." Prince Philip again. This quote is practically immediately after the previous one I mentioned. Evidently my range of quotable sentences isn't as vast as I had once assumed .. Gonna have to work on that ..
Chapter 16 - "You shouldn't stay there where they can see you."
"I think it's disgusting standing there where THEY can see you .." HA, ah .. this is off Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (it's a classic, sue me). But I have to say, I did not expect to encounter it in this story ..
Chapter 17 - "No .. No, I don't think I will."
.. that old man Steve (Rogers - Captain America) meme .. Unreasonably funny, even after all this time.
Chapter 17 - "Glad I brought him yet?" "Yeah, yeah, alright. I'm glad you brought him."
Yet another reference I'm SURE I've made before (and continue to make on a regular basis in real life, so perhaps the recurrence isn't all that surprising ..
"Admit it. You're glad I came."
"Yes, I'm glad you came."
^ Princess of Thieves again. A conversation between Froderick and Gwyn.
Chapter 17 - "When the time comes to act, it'll all happen quickly. Terra Nova will fall like a house of cards."
Thought this sounded strangely familiar. Then I realised it reminded me of Daniel 9:26 - "And the end shall be with a flood" (some interpretations, "the end will come like a flood")
Chapter 17 - "Sometimes sacrifices have to be made in war."
"Sometimes .. sacrifices must be made."
"Sacrifices?!"
A quote from the Prince of Egypt, when Moses and his adopted father are discussing the decree to kill the babies.
Chapter 17 - "I scared you?"
"You just scared him."
"I scared HIM?!"
How To Train Your Dragon, Hiccup and Astrid (about Toothless)
Chapter 18 - "She had cleared the second level of the game."
This reminds me of Shigaraki's tendency to compare the challenges in his life to the stages of a video game. At this stage, I honestly don't know if it was an intentional reference or not. So many of these references and callbacks have become so ingrained in my memory now that they've ceased to be quotes and have more or less melded into a part of my own subconscious .. funny how that works ..
Chapter 18 - "stuck in a rotating conveyor belt of stone for all time"
This reminds me so much of that hallway in Super Mario 64. ๐ Before you clear a certain part of the game, you can never reach the top of the staircase in the castle. You just keep running up and up the stairs .. forever.
Chapter 18 - "rocking on his chair slightly and assuming the demeanour of a lazy grandfather"
Cranky Kong
Chapter 19 - "small wooden rooms, each roofed by a flat cone of bamboo poles"
This gives me such visceral memories of a segment of Veggietales โ called "Larry's Lagoon", as I have just now discovered. More than 20 years after first committing the images to memory. Weird. It's about a shipwreck on an island. Were there even bamboo shacks in that episode?! I can't even remember. Why do these little huts remind me so much of that story?! Update: I have located the episode โ and would you believe it, they actually DO have little bamboo huts! Mystery .. solved. I guess.
Chapter 19 - "the iconic form of the colony barkeeper"
Agh, this is a reference to an interview between Mark Hamill and Laura Dern that we saw .. idk, years ago? But we still quote it .. often. Yeah, it's .. it's iconic. What can I say.
Chapter 21 โ "Saihitofferten"
Hahaaaa .. I believe this is a reference within a reference within a reference, so it's gonna take some explaining. Rug and I have a Minecraft Terra Nova world, in which we've built the colony and a few other things. During the building process, we happened to adopt a few wild cows along the way. Eventually, we grabbed some tags and named them. One of my favourite cows was called "SayHiToTheJeffersons" (as a reference to the song "The Adams Administration" off the musical Hamilton, which we listened to a lot during the building project). Consequently, this medicine was named after a cow named after a song from a musical that resided in a Minecraft world based on the colony of Terra Nova. "Saihitofferten" is short for "SA(y/i)HITOthejeFFERsons". And just to add some flair (and to make it sound more realistically medicinal), I added an "en" on the .. end.
The "Thomas" in "Thomas Saihi" is for Thomas Jefferson.
Aren't you glad you asked?
Chapter 22 - "Parker [ended] the call with a surge of glee as he pictured the dissatisfaction in his employer's expression"
Reference to Eureka, Season 1, Ep 8. Carter hangs up on Jo (his deputy) without saying "Over" and takes great pleasure in the fact that โ as he says โ it's gonna bug her all day.
Chapter 23 - "his eyebrows pulled so far down that they nearly obscured his vision"
LOL .. Flint Lockwood's father .. ๐
Chapter 23 - "I oughtta string you up the nearest tree myself"
"I'd string 'im up the nearest tree .." - Seven Brides for Seven Brothers .. again. Hm. ~(หโ ห ~)
Chapter 24 - "Was he to be interrogated by the ghost of a pirate?"
.. . That episode of Get Smart where that clip-clop wooden leg noise was following them around the ship ..
Chapter 24 - "Come with me for a minute, I want to run something by you."
.. wwWHYY. In my own defence, I am positive that this was never meant to be a Camp Rock reference .. and yet ..
Chapter 24 - "Tell me, have you figured out how to walk on water yet?"
A reference to โ I mean, obviously Jesus โ but also Lucas' own line in Within (Ep 11 of Terra Nova):
"How is the great Commander? Has he walked on water yet?"
Chapter 25 - "27. There were 27 floors."
I was 27 years old when I wrote this chapter (though the book itself spanned several years, I think).
Chapter 25 - "Chester"
.. I think this was a reference to Chester the rat on 102 Dalmatians (the video game). He's a good guy, that rat.
Chapter 25 โ "the Jian"
The Jian is a bird in Chinese mythology that possesses only one eye and one wing. Intended to symbolise the need for two people to lean on each other for help, Simon uses it ironically due to the fact that he only has one arm.
Chapter 25 - "Don't set foot near 86th street."
I'm sure this is a reference to Agent 86, Maxwell Smart (Get Smart). And I'm not sure I like it.
Chapter 26 โ "Molly/Malaikah"
Remember the throwaway comment about Lucas' aunt at the end of Eye of the Storm? (Ch. 42, Family Matters)
Chapter 26 โ "Kiki"
Ergh, Teen Beach Movie! Nooooo ..
Chapter 26 - "probably Italian, Skye thought to herself, though she wasn't sure exactly why"
I know why. It's because me and Rug kept making weird offhand comments about men in Italian shoes at the time.
"Look at his shoes. Suspicious."
"Probably Italian."
or
"Accent's a little unusual, huh?"
"Probably wears Italian shoes."
The conversations you have when you think you're never going to go on record ..
Chapter 28 - "The noses were embellished with wicked grins and lifeless eyes .."
Yet another reference to the 102 Dalmatians game. Cruella's toy planes (the most horrifying enemies ever, from a little kid perspective) had these evil grins frozen on their faces, the only thing you could see as they came down to attack you (and the last thing you saw if they succeeded)! ๐ญ
Chapter 28 - "Mercer"
I chose the name "Mercer" cause I couldn't figure out what to call him. I had been just calling him "the store guy", so I looked up names with a similar meaning to that and found Mercer .. which literally means "a merchant" or "a guy that sells stuff".
Interestingly, we recently watched Covert Affairs, which actually has a guy with the last name "Mercer". But this was not at all a reference to that .. just a weird coincidence ..
Chapter 28 - "Not that Oregon"
"Not that Charlie .." - Santa Clause 2 .. yeah, again.
I know. It's bad. (๏ฟฃ_,๏ฟฃ )
Chapter 28 - "Portland Oregon"
"As in London England?" - Viola Hastings, She's the Man. Another great movie (am I giving it too much credit? Yeah, probably. Is this making me want to watch it again? .. yeah, definitely).
Chapter 28 - "What, you're gonna cry now?"
Nooo, this reminds me so much of "Look at little Goblin Jr. Gonna cry?" from Spider-Man 3 (the Tobey Maguire one, obviously .. although I suppose they could both technically be classed as "the Tobey Maguire one" .. but I digress).
Chapter 29 - "an almost pretty shade of purplish blue, the bruises"
Hehe, a few years ago, I got a GREAT bruise on my arm from archery. Still remember it fondly. It was huge and looked like a galaxy, all mottled blue and purple and white. Good times. I miss it (the bruise, that is โ we still do the archery part, we just don't end up with the spectacular bruises เฒ โญโฎเฒ ).
Chapter 29 - "Roberta"
HA. This is a reference to the character Roberta off Swiss Family Robinson. Such an irritatingly quotable person. We utilise her lines quite often .. usually as dramatically as possible, naturally.
Chapter 29 - "The world hasn't stopped just because your mother died."
Evidently it's a chapter for Swiss Family Robinson! This line reminds me of "All that hasn't changed just because we were shipwrecked." - Mother Robinson (yes, that is actually her character's name, I checked because I couldn't for the life of me remember it โ apparently that's why!)
Chapter 30 - "Dr. Katseles."
This doctor was featured in a deleted scene for the Pilot episode of Terra Nova. Unfortunately, he didn't make it into the final episode, but I liked the idea of him, so I added him when I needed someone prickly!
Chapter 30 - "The soldier boys"
This is a reference to Danny calling Becker "soldier boy" on Primeval. I may have actually referenced this before in the past .. this is feeling oddly familiar ..
Chapter 30 - "Deborah wanted me to look out for you, you know."
This whole scenario reminds me so much of the situation in North & South after Margaret's mother died (it was written in 1855, but spoiler alert, I guess .. ๐(๏พใฎ๏พ๐) and Mrs. Thornton tried badly to fill the gap.
'Course Mrs. Thornton, bristly as she was, the old battleaxe .. at least she had some good points .. unlike Lydia.
Chapter 30 - "You're better than this."
Puss in Boots. His "mama" said it to him when he was a teenage .. cat. I don't wanna explain this anymore. ๐
Chapter 31 - "I think is how your video put it"
"'Cooler' I think, is the word you used in your memo .." - Henry Wu, Jurassic World
Chapter 31 - "Claudius"
Hehe, when one of my sisters was in high school, she had to give a video presentation on Hamlet. I don't remember much of it, but I distinctly remember us cracking each other up as we attempted to take the video, and for some reason I have a vivid memory of her accented voice warbling out "Claudius!" Then there was the time we used a puppet of mine in place of some Italian family baby .. man, those video presentations were a riot.
Chapter 31 - "You can't say things like that!"
Reminds me of "You can't say things like that around Aunt Cass!" - Hiro Hamada, Big Hero 6
Chapter 31 - "Evidently you're not busy."
"I've seen your daily routine, you are not busy." - Rey (to Luke), The Last Jedi
Chapter 31 - "you know, this is echoing so strongly of a story I heard once .."
Hehehe .. this is a flick-back to that time in After the Occupation where Lucas tried to escape the Infirmary and went face-first into the floor. Good times. Well, you know .. not for him, but. For everyone watching, it was great.
Chapter 31 - "I don't think they have any right calling you a patient, Harold"
This 'Harold' was a random name pulled from the annals of my memory. Specifically from the Willowbrook Stables Saddle Club PC game. There were SO many old people living on that island, and Harold was the guy that ran the lighthouse. For some reason, we seemed to have to visit there WAYYYYY more often than you'd think ..
Twas a great game though (despite the oftentimes horrifying graphical glitches .. I mean, they really only added to the experience anyway, right? Definitely made it memorable when Lisa's nose slid sideways like a giant icicle and pierced her horse's rump from three feet away.. I'm starting to think the thefts weren't the issue with that island ..).
Chapter 31 - "Oppenheimer. McAngus. Vargas. Clancy."
Oppenheimer โ Reference to that line in the pilot episode of Eureka, but also strangely coincidental seeing as not long after this, we seemed to be seeing Oppenheimer references come up EVERYWHERE. Seriously, it was weird โ and that was before the movie came out.
McAngus โ I believe this was a reference to Angus MacGyver, but also to a joke we had about Angus Beef burgers at McDonalds .. also in relation to MacGyver ..
Vargas โ We were watching Chicago Fire around this time (Dad's choice, not mine โ he loved it, for some reason), and Vargas was the name of one of the more tolerable guys on there.
Clancy โ Clancy of the Overflow, presumably. The Man From Snowy River is always a classic, no matter the day.
Allerdale โ Shortened version of 'Alan-a-Dale'
Dunkirk and Rin โ I have no idea. Must've come from the top of my head .. ใ(๏ฟฃโฝ๏ฟฃใ)
Chapter 32 โ "Dwayne"
This is a reference to Jared DeWhite's best friend. Dwayne, just in case that part wasn't obvious.
Chapter 32 - "When you do walk out those gates, you won't go alone. "
"When you carry this axe, you carry all of us." - Stoick the Vast, How To Train Your Dragon
Chapter 33 - "Anything would be better than being mercilessly shot down like dogs in the middle of the jungle."
"Down like a dog on the highway". A reference to the part of Anne of Green Gables where Anne recites the poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. . Unfortunately.
Chapter 34 - "Off the Rails"
This chapter was originally meant to be called "Kensinge in the Camp", but I renamed it because of the potential for spoilers. You never know whose eyes may be searching the table of contents, gleaning what information they can from the chapter titles .. (not that I'm that sort of person, I'm just saying .. if there ever were such a villain, well .. better safe than sorry). ( อกยฐ อส อกยฐ)
Chapter 34 - "You wouldn't understand. It's .. strange."
Ergh, this reminds me SO much of:
"He's strange, he's very strange .."
"Strange? Strange how?"
- Dr. Tenma and Dr. Elefun, Astro Boy 2009
Chapter 34 - "Should've seen what became of the slasher that ran through here yesterday."
Just in case it wasn't obvious, this is the slasher that Jim and co. found fused to the wall in the future.
Chapter 34 - "The Probe still appeared to be exploding, albeit in incredibly slow motion."
Despite myself, I could never quite stop being reminded of the food machine off Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs during this scene .. 'XD
Chapter 34 - "He could have sworn he'd seen it before somewhere, a long time ago"
"I have the strangest feeling that I've seen that ship before .. a long time ago, when I was very young .."
- George Darling, Peter Pan
Chapter 34 - "What did we find?!"
"What is it?! What did we find?!" - Megamind, from .. well, Megamind.
Chapter 35 - "a Bluetongue Orwellian Supercomputer Chest"
BOSC for short. (ยฌโฟยฌ) I wanted an anagram that sounded as much like "Box" as possible. Technically, I could have swapped the words "Supercomputer" and "Chest", but "Bluetongue Orwellian Chest Supercomputer" somehow doesn't sound like it flows as well .. not to mention it conjures up weirder mental images ..
Chapter 38 - "You must be out of your minds!"
"You must be out of your minds if you think
the President is gonna bring the nation to the brink
of meddling in the middle of a military mess
a game of chess where France is queen- and king-less"
Chapter 39 - "according to all known laws of physics, really shouldn't be functioning at all"
.. yes. This is an "according to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly" callback. ๐ Because of course it is. There had to be at least one.
Chapter 39 - "After all I've done for you, you still don't trust me .."
Erika thought Simon was talking to her here, but he was actually talking to Zayne and Lucy, who had been spying for him practically from the beginning.
I mean, technically, he was talking to himself, seeing as the children were nowhere in the vicinity, but I digress.
Chapter 39 - "We need to pull back a bit so we can review the situation"
"I'm reviewing .. the situation .. Once a villain, you're a villain to the END!" - Fagin, Oliver
Chapter 39 - "Now would be a good time, I think"
This was a quote from Marian, off Robin Hood BBC. It was when they were about to die in the desert, so she was telling him to say his wedding vows. I wish I could tell you it ended more happily than it sounds ..
Chapter 39 - "Shortly thereafter, the small group scattered to the winds."
"with my friends all scattered to the winds" โ Hamilton
Chapter 40 - "NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS NATURAL!"
"Nothing in Jurassic World is natural! We have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals." - Henry Wu, Jurassic World (again .. never realised how much I liked Henry Wu ๐)
Chapter 40 - "This isn't some fairground-"
"This isn't some fairground tournament, Will. Putting Philip on the throne will be dangerous."
- Robin Hood, Princess of Thieves
Chapter 40 - "Nakayami"
By the way, "Nakayami" (Erika's, Lucy's, and Zayne's last name) is a combination of the Japanese words "naka" and "yami" (obviously). They mean "within" and "darkness" respectively. "Within is darkness". Seems appropriate for all three family members in different ways.
Erika is pretending to be an agent of light, all the while hiding the blackest heart.
Zayne has pushed the darkness of his past experiences so far down that he barely recognises himself anymore.
Lucy is much like Erika. She tries to be good, she loves her cousin, she wants to please her aunt, but all the while she has to fight to keep the monster inside contained. Her temper, her resentment, her cynicism, her tendency towards violence .. in a lot of ways, her last name represents her better than anyone.
Chapter 40 - "John Titor"
Do I really need to explain John Titor? Probably not. Suffice it to say that the inspiration for including him here was both a personal curiosity with regards to the original story, and a growing urge to satisfy the call of nostalgia by re-watching Steins;Gate. We ended up watching a recording of the stage play instead โ which, by the way, is EPIC. The casting is perfect. If you like the anime or game versions of Steins;Gate, definitely check it out.
Chapter 40 - "Pretty blue chest you have there."
This was an intentional dig at Rug. I often use the wrong colour on purpose just to annoy her. She's an artist, so she's particular about that sort of thing. (โฟโกโฟโก)
Obviously the Box is purple, not blue. I suppose it could've looked slightly different through the chipset in the brain, though, so we'll give the colour-confused future people the benefit of the doubt. For now.
Chapter 40 - "It's purple."
Every time I read this, it enters my head sounding JUST like: "He's .. He's 14 .." - Marty Wolf, Big Fat Liar
EVERY TIME.
Chapter 40 - "How could she make them understand?"
"How can I make you understand? We can't go near there!" - Black Beauty 1994
Chapter 40 - "Look for a small sign that says Claremont Avenue."
My sister Rug also creates her own online comic! It's about two pirate captains who end up having to share one ship. Hence the name, "Ship of Two Captains". It's pretty epic, and it's only getting epic .. er .. by the chapter. You should check it out! Anyway, this is a reference to one of the main characters, Eaton Clairemont.
Chapter 40 - "Let's just say I have a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Jake Quentin. From the first time this guy appeared (preaching at the Memorial when Jim, Mira, Taylor, and the Kap first entered the city), Rug said he reminded her of Jake Gyllenhaal. So when I decided to bring him back, I called him Jake (for obvious reasons) Quentin (after Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio โ a character that Jake Gyllenhaal played in Spider-Man: Far From Home (another of Rug's most favouritest movies)).
Chapter 41 - "Fagen"
Another reference to Fagin off Oliver Twist.
Chapter 41 - "Thought you got away, didn't you, missy?"
"Thought you got away, didn't you, mustang?" - Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron (thought the quote wasn't Spirit)
Chapter 41 - "Scared ya."
For whatever reason, this little scene where Skye slaps her hand down on Lucas' shoulder and startles him reminds me so much of the beginning of the episode "Betrayal" (Season 3 Ep 5) on The Pretender where Miss Parker does the same thing to Broots while he's practicing his French in the kitchen ..
Chapter 41 - "No one that goes in there uninvited ever comes out."
This reminds me of the whole Esther 'appearing before the king uninvited' is certain death thing. Specifically the Veggietales version. Now that was .. something. Particularly that 'puppies' song .. *shudders*
Chapter 41 - "a purple Carnotaur could have thrown its tiny mittens right around his waist"
.. okay, but this drudges up terrifying Barney the Dinosaur memories and I'm not sure I appreciate it.
Chapter 42 - "Russell"
In the appendix of Eye of the Storm, I explained where the "Esteban" part of Esteban's name came from. The "Russell" part comes from the Pretender. Years ago, me and my sisters used to play this game on Pictochat (on the DS โ remember those days? Anyone?) where we'd make up stories utilising a massive collaboration of characters from all over the place. Guess you could say it was the biggest crossover fanfic I've ever seen. Anyway. One of those characters was Jarod Russell, off The Pretender (his real last name was never actually specified, but it was unofficially considered "Russell" because that was the first pretend last name he gave himself on the show).
Chapter 43 - "There are many things that history tends to either ignore or forget, fading out of public memory"
This is a combination of two lines from Princess of Thieves (one at the beginning and one at the end):
"There was more to their story. A tale kept secret then forgotten. Lost in the maze of time and shifting memory. For Robin and Marian, had a child." and "History may have forgotten the reign of Philip."
Chapter 43 - "I pulled the guards from their positions to make things easy for you."
"Many thanks, girl. You took the guards from their posts, gave us .. well." - Will Scarlett, Princess of Thieves
^ AGAIN. Why so many Princess of Thieves references all of a sudden?! I don't even think we'd watched it recently! Maybe I was missing it ..
Chapter 44 - "an old coin, which he flipped in his fingers thoughtfully"
Hehe, this reminds me so much of Jaron, from the Ascendance series of books by Jennifer Nielsen. Great series. And super nostalgic for us. Jaron has a habit of flipping a coin across his knuckles when he's thinking.
Chapter 45 - "No, Dad. Stay here."
Not sure why, but โ in this scene particularly โ I always hear Lucas' "Dad"s in Flint Lockwood's voice .. that whiny "Daaaaaddd, nooo. Daaaadd."
Chapter 45 - "Lucas was already tackling the swaying staircase"
For some reason, this reminds me of the 1997 101 Dalmatians animated TV series, where they were leaping between giant unstable blocks of green jelly or something ..
Chapter 45 - "A section of dark grey Terminus crumbled like wet pastry into the ocean"
A reference to the "crumbling like pastries" line in the song "The A Team" by Ed Sheeran. The song's linked to a memory that makes my sisters cringe and break out in hives (figuratively, of course) whenever they hear the line.
Hence its periodic usage.
Chapter 45 - "EVERYBODY HOLD ONTO-"
A combination of "Everybody hold onto somebody." and "Hold onto your butts." (Jurassic Park)
Chapter 47 (Epilogue) - "No one's ever really gone."
- Luke Skywalker, The Rise of Skywalker
Chapter 47 (Epilogue) - "Christmas Day had finally arrived .. 3 days late."
Hehe .. ah .. man. So keep in mind that when I wrote this, Christmas was still MONTHS away. I had no way of knowing that it would somehow be a prophetic statement about our own Christmas this year. I'm currently writing this on Boxing Day. Christmas was yesterday, but due to an abundance of odd family circumstances beyond our control, we've had to postpone at least part of our celebrations by several days. What a weird way to end the year.
If only I'd known ..
Nevertheless, it strengthens the connection I have to this story, right at the end as I finish my final read-through. I thought that by this late in the game, it was done with the surprises. Evidently I was wrong! Guess the phrase 'life imitates art' can be taken more literally than I realised! (๏พโใฎโ)๏พ*:๏ฝฅ๏พโง
Chapter 47 (Epilogue) - "The Grinch"
This is a last reference to the story "The Grinch" by Emtheunicorn. Seriously, reading that fanfic has become such a tradition with me and my sister. It deserved one more salutation right at the end.
Chapter 47 (Epilogue) - "And though we might like to, we can never go back. In the end, we were never meant to."
This line was inspired by the following quote:
"I learned something when I went back to Helstone, expecting it to be the paradise I knew as a child. Try as I might, happy as we were, we can't go back." - Margaret Hale, North and South
Merry Christmas!
