Seventh Chance
Chapter 2
Trial of the Gods
They say you can notice a vast difference in someone when you haven't seen them in a few days, so you can imagine the differences one would go through in 10 months. For Izuku Midoriya those past 10 months had been the biggest change then he'd had in his entire life. since what he called 'Day Zero' his everyday had changed drastically.
For one, he now attended what every kid in his class had attended since they were 4 years old, even if they were now only required to attend a session once a month instead of Izuku's three sessions per week. Quirk Counselling, It had sounded fun to him growing up but as a teen the fanfare was weighed down by all that went on during.
His one advantage was a more mature mind to understand the function and use of his Quirk or rather Dual Quirk as his Quirk Councillor, Doctor Chinen had told him. Usually it happened when two opposing yet compatible quirks combined into a single quirk yet had two separate and distinctive effects. Hybrid quirks like Kach...Bakugos, where his mother Mitsuki's quirk 'Glycerin' combined with the explosive properties of Masaru's 'Acid Sweat' to create the 'Explosion' quirk that he knew today. Doctor Chinen had also recounted about a family with five children, all their quirks being different to the other.
Though eventually he would come to find that the added maturity didn't always come in handy. When a child was young, their active imagination and flexibility of mind helped with finding triggers to control ignition quirks like Izukus. Finding a method to separate the mental switch to use his quirk had taken some time. He had eventually settled on using his right hand for the decomposition side while his left hand was focused on the healing aspect, while using mental commands to act as a trigger.
Five months into his sessions they had moved onto a rather unusual method to properly test his quirk. The week before they had given him what they called a Devicer, a training aid for those with quirks like his that unless safely controlled could prove dangerous.
One morning towards the end of the summer holidays he was taken to one of Musutafu's beach lines. This one was fairly famous but for all the wrong reasons. It was in a poor state, littered with towering heaps of waste and garbage.
He was given a simple instruction, to clean as much of the beach as he could in the time his session would allow. So for nearly three hours Izuku had set about clearing the beach. He had brought along a camera fixed to his chest to record his own results. Since starting experiments with his quirks he had taken to filling notebooks with records of the different materials he could seemingly reduce to atoms.
With those three hours and probably 15% of the beach cleared later and he was exhausted, though there was a big difference in the strength of his 'Dispersion' as he'd taken to calling it.
Before, he could disperse objects the size of a brick with some effort, but now he could break apart items the size of his backpack with less effort.
Something else he had discovered was that instead of just breaking something down completely he could 'dismantle' something into its basic structure components after taking apart a door separating the ironmongery from the old wooden door or when he'd broken up a waste heap from a construction site breaking away the cement adhesive leaving a pile of cleanish pieces of concrete blocks.
It wasn't necessarily all fun and games. A month after the incident he had a brief appearance in court, meeting once again with Officer Mouri and the law attorney Ms Kisaki who was his defence. They had explained to himself and his mother that the situation was a rather open and shut case, something to complete paperwork and complete trials for sentencing. Something they dealt with on the regular. Izuku's previous state of quirklessness would of course be taken into account. Izuku's presence in the courtroom was more of a formality, though it proved to be both exciting and terrifying at the same time.
Another was testing of his secondary quirk, 'Regrowth' as he'd taken to calling it. It was a rather funny thing in that he could control it but at times it had a mind of its own, earning a Passive and Ignition Emitter category. If he were to suffer a scrape on his knee or a paper cut, before he would even notice it was there it was gone without even leaving a mark. It made recording data on it infuriating.
In late august, he had been brought along to Kaliida A&E Hospital, where Doctor Chinen made him aware of a hard truth, separate to the truth he'd learned as a young child. In Japan the average birth rate was around 700,000 per year, less than 0.1 percent would have a quirk with a healing factor of some sort. And of that 0.1 percent less than 20% would have one that could be used on another. Those that had a healing quirk were under extreme pressure to copulate with someone who would either result in a healing quirk if not a more powerful one. Some would see it as unethical as the quirk marriages that had been banned some years ago but making more healer class quirks was a must in any country.
Doctor Chinen knew that Izuku was aiming for UA, to become a pro hero. But he needed to be aware that this option was also available to him and that even at his age he could be making as much as a top surgeon, she had even described his quirk combination to be that of the ultimate combat medic. The thought had weighed heavily upon his mind, that is until he started his tests for the day.
There was one discovery he was not expecting and yet he knew there had to be a downside to such a versatile quirk. Using it on himself until now meant he wasn't prepared for what he would experience when using it on someone who had a rather severe injury, or in this case, a crushed arm.
The pain he had felt had been excruciating, so much that Izuku had nearly fainted but held through as he began to reverse the damage. Once it was over he was taken away amidst a flurry of thanks from his first patient. The visit had ended there but at his insistence Izuku returned a week later to treat the smaller injuries, taking a massive amount of weight from the staff who would have been swamped by all the minor injuries that had been caused by a villain attack that morning.
Through a great deal of experimentation he had found what he called his safety threshold for the severity of the injury and how long since it had happened, as well as the speed in which he would spend looking back through his patients 'History'. Some rumours in the hospital about him began to circulate about 'the little green Healer'.
The last surprise from his quirk was a rather subtle mutation in his brain. Something they had discovered in the early days of testing him.
A certain area of the brain that only showed activity when using his quirks. Something which would typically be found in those with intellectual quirks, the current theory was it was something to do with a subconscious part of Izuku that dismantled things, in his case until recently, it was noticeable in his almost constant need to dismantle and understand someone's quirk.
As Izuku had never had a brain scan till now they had nothing to compare it to, whether he had had this mutation all his life or whether it had developed naturally as he grew would remain a mystery.
Then there was Bakugo. He wasn't the only one who went through changes after that day. His former friend had gone through a massive change in personality. What had once been a young man with endless confidence and drive, was reduced to a near wreck. He had been absent for a week following what the news had reported as a serious attack on a minor resulting in massive damage to the local shopping district.
Izuku had immediately recognised the villain, how he had tried to desperately breath as sludge had filled his lungs. If Bakugo had gone through that then Izuku knew the terror he must have felt. The live news broadcast had unfortunately streamed it all. Izuku's encounter had lasted barely 30 seconds whereas Bakugou had been fending him off for nearly 10 minutes. The cameras had been mostly focused on All Might at his last second intervention but a single shot made it of Bakugo being taken away that did not paint a pretty picture.
Everyone had been walking on eggshells the moment he got back, some braver than others had asked him directly about what had happened. But during the entire time Bakugo didn't say a word, and for weeks he didn't speak to another student. He seemed to go through a complete disconnect with the world around him.
That is until one day rumors started to float around about Izuku having a quirk and his run in with a villain. The greenete had refrained from telling anyone, not that any of his classmates would talk with him anyway. The only others in the school who knew about it were the teachers, most likely the school's secretary who was known for being nosy and spreading gossip like wildfire.
It was by far the most attention that Izuku had ever received in his life, and it was most unwelcome. His classmates all but demanded a show of his quirk of which he refused.
However he did show it to someone close to two weeks later. Out of the blue Bakugo had intercepted him on his way home. For Izuku it was the lack of malice or demand that had thrown him when his former bully had asked to see it for himself. A request was something Katsuki was known to give.
And following a brief showing as he dispersed a broken appliance that was abandoned or fly tipped in one of the nearby alleys, the explosive teen for the first time in years actually showed interest in him instead of looking at him like an insect. It would be the start of rebuilding their ruined friendship that had been abandoned long before.
Months passed by, his new normal blended into his everyday life, but there was something else though he wasn't sure what to make of it. Some nights he would dream normally, but some nights it would seem strange. He would dream of a woman he had never seen before in a hero costume.
He could never make out the surroundings; it always seemed to change. But the only constant feature was a throne-like chair that the mystery woman sat on, though she wasn't looking at him, she looked like she was waiting, knees to her chest looking bored. These dreams never lasted long, a few seconds at most but he would still have had a full night's sleep.
When he described these dreams to Doctor Chinen, though, she seemed to find it amusing saying "oh to be young". Her diagnosis was that it was just his hormones and to his mortification said that he might have been having a wet dream. His previous fascination with heroes could have given him a type and when asked who his last crush was made his face turn crimson, proving her point. He didn't bring it up again.
Now ten months from that fateful day Izuku Midoriya was standing in front of the gates of UA, one of the top hero training facilities in the world. He along with thousands of applicants had arrived to take the exam to claim their place at the prestigious school, some had come further than others from the furthest ends of japan and some judging by their distinctive uniforms or lack thereof had come from overseas to try their luck.
While his commute wasn't all that long he had decided to leave early and take his time, calming his mind flipping through his cue cards he had prepared for the written test. A few around him were doing the same, while others seemed starstruck and a few had fallen on their faces not watching where they were going. 'It's bad luck to trip before an exam right'.
Making it through the front doors without incident the students were filtered into different halls to take the written exam. Those hoping to attend the hero course would be taking their exam today while those aiming for the general, support or business departments were scheduled for a different day.
The written exam for the hero course only accounted for 40% of the points for each candidate while the practical exam made up the remaining 60%, so many applicants could lose out or make up a place depending on the effort given.
At 9:30 sharp they were instructed to start the exam. The exam proctors keeping a close eye on the students watching them like a hawk. The exam had nearly 200 hundred questions to be answered in 45 minutes, no small task but for many taking it it was a challenge. On average he would need to spend 13.5 seconds on each question, some questions were straight forward while others took more effort. But by the time the exam had ended Izuku had managed to fill in every question, the last being a more philosophical question asking what their definition of a hero was.
Following the exam they were all assembled in what seemed to be the main hall for school assemblies. After his fanfare introduction, Present Mic began explaining the details of the physical exam they would be taking using graphics similar to an old video game he once played. One of the examinees called out Mic on a mistake as well as admonishing a student a few rows back from Izuku who had been muttering though now seemed on the verge of a panic attack. Luckily, one of the proctors pulled out a paper bag to help the panicking student calm down.
After 15 minutes the presentation had ended along with a short Q&A, after which the applicants were led to a hallway almost completely filled with changing rooms.
The school had advised to bring sportswear such as tracksuits that would still give plenty of protection while at the same time keeping their manoeuvrability. The fact that it was near the end of february meant it was still rather cold out. Izuku had opted for a blue tracksuit along with a pair of his signature red shoes.
As he exited the changing rooms he followed the steady stream of students making their way to the buses that would take them to their testing site, in his case Battle Centre B. as he was passing by one of the hallways leading away he spotted the pro-hero midnight and a familiar shrunken form wearing a suit many sizes to big for his frame. He wasn't facing him but Izuku would remember that figure anywhere.
"So many potential heroes here, anyone you know, All Might? Maybe a secret love child is in the mix. Kuu, A mini All Might, now that I've got to see". Izuku could hear the excitable voice of Midnight though when she spoke her fellow hero's name she lowered her voice.
The flow of students pushed him further along before he could hear more, though All Might seemed to be turning as he passed from sight.
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
The bus ride took his group to one of the several large open top facilities on the grounds from what they could see inside were what resembled cities. Thirtyfour other applicants were at the same site, including the blue haired boy with glasses who called out during Present Mic's presentation.
A few looked completely normal like the cute brunette a few feet away. But some were a bit more unique, one was well over 6 feet with multiple appendages. There was someone with a red and white pompadour and a blonde who seemed to be posing in strange directions with a dazzling glow.
There was even a short guy with yellow skin that he was sure he'd seen in an old movie. The last was a girl with what appeared to have angel wings, which got Izuku thinking about his past classmate Tsubasa. 'Whatever happened to him?'
Some of the applicants began doing some warm up exercises and stretches while they waited, while others chose to do what appeared to be some calming rituals. Izuku however had something else to do. On his wrist was his Devicer, one of the few support items allowed during the exam. A lot of forms were required to use one for something like this but after very little persuasion from Doctor Chinen, he had set about the process. He had had his quirk for ten months now and he was up against others who had been using them for years. He needed every advantage he could get.
The Device itself wasn't all that pretty, in fact it looked like a rather crude and undersized toy attached to his wrist and It would only work with one half off his quirk, which he'd called 'decomposition'. With it he would have greater control of his still wild but dangerous quirk. Looking around he could see he wasn't the only one with such an item.
"AND BEGIN!". Boomed the loud voice of Present Mic.
"WHAT'S WRONG? THE TEST'S STARTED, THERE ARE NO COUNTDOWNS IN REAL LIFE! RUN! RUN! THE DIE HAS BEEN CAST!"
Immediately everyone began running into the battle site, most heading through the centre street heading for the middle of the facility, Izuku however took a left going further afield. For the moment he was alone as he sprinted through the city's streets. His first target was a one pointer, who had barely spotted Izuku before charging yelling "target acquired, kill!".
Rather than immediately taking it out he lured it to a sizable plaza. It hadn't been too difficult to outrun it and when in position Izuku decided to switch from baiting to fighting. Coming to a stop he raised his right arm taking aim at the approaching one pointer, allowing his mind to have proper time to aim.
"Dispersion" was the last thing the bot heard as the majority of the robot was reduced to dust leaving part of its arm to screech across the floor. Picking up the leftover, he used a smaller dispersion to create a handle with the remains of the attachment mechanism effectively giving him a surprisingly lightweight shield. He wouldn't have any more time to alter it as two more robots entered the plaza. "Time to get to work"
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
"We don't tell them how many Villains there are or how they're placed. Such a wide battlefield and limited time brings out the best of them" remarked a bear/mouse/dog as he stirred his tea.
"Intelligence gatherers, mobility experts, decision makers and then there are the natural born warriors. The abilities needed to preserve peace in our cities are judged by the points they earn". Those in the room both listened in interest and with some trepidation as the principal spoke. Some would call his words wisdom while others called it the voice of the devil. Whatever their opinion he was still their boss.
Close to twenty screens were active in the room where the exam was being observed, assessed and commanded from. Teachers, both pro heroes and pure educators alike sat in the room evaluating the new crop of hero candidates.
Some applicants appeared to be in their element as the principle had said, while others struggled or flailed about trying their hardest. The difficulty of the exam was not done out of cruelty or bias. In today's climate the ability of one in a combat situation was tantamount to a hero's survival. There had been almost thirty hero deaths this year so far alone, the most recent of which was a young couple with water quirks who had met a gruesome end.
For those whose quirks aren't suited to the environment they had been placed in, if they truly wished to become a hero then their chance would come later. For now their attention had to be on the enforcers that were auditioning as it were.
One particular member of the panel had his eyes glued to one particular screen, a screen that showed a young man with green hair sweeping through a collection of robot carcases. A glance to the chimaera in a suit showed he was already pulling up the file on the applicant. "You know him then Yagi"
"Somewhat, i didn't recognise him at first but after watching a white I'm sure of it. we met just under a year ago when he was attacked by a villain". He replied accepting the file.
"A most peculiar name for a quirk, don't you think. I believe it's a play on Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction. And such control after only a year. Most curious". The screen was still on him as a three pointer had begun launching its payload only for its missiles to disappear mid flight. The robot itself fell to the floor as it fell into its separate components.
"Two minutes remaining!" came the voice of their english teacher over the speakers
Power loader, who had been close to the principal, had heard him. "Well, let's see how a god of destruction stacks up to my Executor". On all the screens the cameras started to wobble slightly as the zero pointers were unleashed. Even in their room the tremors could be felt.
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
Izuku's watch showed that there were still two minutes left of the exam. He had just broken apart a three pointer using dismantle, an attack that was less taxing on him.
Though this was by far the most he'd used his quirk in such a small amount of time. A few other applicants had joined him in the plaza but the amount of robots had already begun to drop.
Taking his impromptu shield along with him he made his way towards another area. He passed a few others running in the opposite direction. All of which seemed to be sporting a distressed or panicked look.
Then he noticed the rumbling as further ahead an eruption of dust blew as a massive robot emerged from below some of the buildings. From the clouds of dust kicked up by its entrance more heroes sped past "people show who they really are in extremis" remarked Izuku unknowingly saying something in line with what his observer was saying at the same time. "But isn't that just a little overkill"
He nearly joined those still running, heading away from the path of the hulk of metal mere yards away if not for a near inaudible cry of pain from behind him. In the path of the oncoming terrorbot, trapped under a slab of wall was a young girl, one he'd seen taking calming breaths as she prepared herself.
It took a second to see the situation she was in and even less time for him to make a decision about it. He turned face heading straight for the girl, ditching his shield along the way.
"Hey you're going to be okay, are you just wedged or is it crushed?" he asked as he was close enough to hear her over the ear splitting noise.
"Just wedged. I can move it a little but i think it's sprained" she answered and though she tried to hide it, pain was evident on her face.
'That's good then, the slabs not supporting anything else meaning' placing his hand on the slab he concentrated on the materials involved before in a burst of teal light, the slab crumbled to nothing as he used the maximum amount of dispersion he could. The second it was gone he looked to her leg which had begun to swell. The sound of approaching doom was getting closer, so acting quickly he lifted her into a standing position before hoisting her onto his shoulder. 'There must have been less the a minute left by now, i can play keep away till then'
"I don't want to panic you or anything but you might want to look back a sec" came the voice of his passenger whose only view was behind them. A quick check gave credence to the panic in her voice. Despite gaining ground on the zero pointer with his impossibly light passenger, the robot had instead decided to reach out for him. The fist which was around the size of a bus was closing in on them.
Left with either the option of running into the alleyways or to keep running till time ran out, Izuku settled on a different option, slowing his pace and turning around but still moving away from it. He could feel his energy waning now, combining the extensive physical exercise and the extended quirk use, he knew anymore quirk usage could take the last out of him.
But this was UA, this would be his only shot. 'Plus Ultra' His arm now held in the air made his decision. This wasn't planned, he didn't try to calculate the amount like before or try to disperse certain materials. When he fired this last shot, his quirk acted in its purest form as it just ate away at as much as it could. The robot's entire hand was gone right up the wrist before stopping at a messy end below its elbow.
"And time's up!"
The robot halted almost as soon as Present Mics voice announced the end of the exam. With the sound of the closing claxon Izuku and his passenger took a breath of relief. A few other examinees creeped out from behind buildings and looked up in disbelief at what the radio hero described as an obstacle.
"Not to ruin the moment or anything but could you put me down. I'm not sure if i can keep using my quirk on myself for much longer" came a voice from behind him.
"Oh right" looking around he spotted what must be one of the few benches that wasn't smashed in battle. As gently as he could he lowered the brunette into a seated position taking care not to bump her injured foot. It was at this moment that he was actually able to get a proper look at who he'd saved and for a moment he was mesmerised.
"Ahem" behind the pair another voice interrupted. Coming from the main gathering of examinees was an old lady barely even four feet. She wore a lab coat and had a syringe shaped cane. "Are any of you hurt? If so raise your hand" the girl beside him tried to raise her hand but a throb of pain made the task difficult"
"She's sprained her ankle after it was trapped by debris, it's begun to swell but I haven't checked if anythings broken yet". Izuku said, having immediately gone about his own examinations of the injured area when their eye contact had broken.
"I see, I see". She said as her lips extended towards the girl's exposed ankle, the injured leg began to glow followed by the rest of her and her leg visibly began to lose its swelling. "Mwah. And you any injuries"
"Nothing that my quirks own healing won't fix"
"Ahh, you're Chinen's little project, I was wondering if i'd be seeing you this year"
"You know Doctor Chinen?" asked Izuku, wishing he'd asked his councillor about her relation to the hero earlier.
"She's my niece, taught the girl everything I know" a quiet beeping came from her watch.
"Right enough lollygagging you lot, time to move on" the hero called out to those still hanging around. "You two take some of these gummies, they'll restore your energy somewhat but don't eat them all at once"
"Thank you" chorused the two teens. Offering his hand he helped the other teen up and kept hold till she had tested her healed leg.
"I'm good I think", still remaining close they made their way to the city's exit. After a bit his walking companion had gained confidence in her walking again and had even tried skipping to test it.
It wasn't long before they had reached the last bus that had a few examinees on it. As they took their seats Izuku happened to either hear the tail end of a conversation or a joke. "-my quirk allows me to be super hard". As the bus left the site every passenger had a smile on their face. But for two their smiles just continued.
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
1 Week Later
Midoriya Residence
A week later and his stomach was full of butterflies and had been since the exam. He knew he had done well in the practical, especially when he'd compared his robot count with Uraraka, the girl he'd saved during the exam, during the bus ride back to the main campus. Apart from his connection to Doctor Chinen he had no one on the inside of UA to get any inside information from.
Speaking of the doctor, he had just returned from his last session for the week with her. He had been told that should he get accepted by UA, his quirk counselling sessions would be taken over by the school's staff.
Meaning that he had possibly only fifthteen sessions left with her before the school term started. Apart from that this session had been about mental triggers for his quirk.
A surprising and actual obvious technique had been finger guns that had proven rather effective in that session for both sides of his quirk, a technique he wished he had the week before. There seemed to be something else she wanted to say but held back, it was what Izuku had been thinking about during his walk back home.
He was barely through the door before he was met by his mother. "Izu-zu-izuku. It's here! It came! It's here" his mother nearly tripped over herself as she handed Izuku a fairly bulky letter. On the lipped side was a red wax seal with the UA brand printed. With shaky hands he accepted the letter feeling more than just the weight of the letter, both metaphorically and physically.
His mother didn't stop him as he walked into his room and placed it on the desk. He could hear her pacing just outside his door but eventually it faded as he began to hear his heart beating in his ears.
With the utmost care he broke the seal gently unfolding the envelope. Possibly from incoordination on his part a small metal disc the size of a coaster dropped out before spolling to a stop.
A Hologram disc, he'd heard of these. To prevent outsiders from possibly leaking results by weighing the letters, UA had opted for recording messages on discs like this whether you passed or failed. Years ago a teen hero hopeful from his apartment complex had shown Izuku and Katsuki his own disc but hadn't shown them the message recorded, saying it would spoil it for when they would get their own. Now it was his turn for it, but would it be for his failure or success.
A little blue beeping could be seen before it burst into life revealing, "All Might!"
"I am here as a projection"
In his room stood the symbol of peace clad in a very extravagant golden suit or rather a projection of him. "We apologise for the wait in bringing your results, young Midoriiya. But as I'm sure you can imagine there are a lot of results to hand out" if the attendance at the exam was any indication, and if All Might had to record each one individually he may well have been recording almost constantly since the exam.
"Now onto the bit you've been waiting for, your results"
Izuku gulped heavily as his anticipation and nerves rose.
"For your written test you scored a whopping ninety-seven percent, earning yourself a comfortable place within the schools general ed course. But of course that's not what you're aiming for is it?"
The projection of All Might was replaced with a short compilation of clips of him during the exam finishing with a slow shot of him as he carried away Uraraka while behind the arm of the behemoth of a robot was slowly turned to dust.
"In this exam you are not only assessed by your combat prowess and skill but also by an attribute that all heroes must possess. The scores of this exam is made up of not just villain points earned by defeating foes but also by a hidden denominator, Hero Points. With your performance you not only earned 75 villain points but also from your heroic actions in saving your fellow examine but also your team play you have been awarded 60 rescue points"
A chart was shown and despite wiping his eyes he still couldn't believe that his name was at the top.
"With a new record breaking score you more importantly pass, with an undeniably deserved spot in our hero course"
"This is just-" Izuku cried as he held back a wave of tears that threatened to break out.
"Come forth, Young Midoriya. This is your Hero Academia"
With that statement the tears broke free.
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
It had taken several rolls of paper towels to dry away the tsunami that was the Midoriya ability to literally cry buckets. Fortunately he'd managed to avoid soaking the letter that had accompanied the projection disc. It was much the same as what All Might had said, congratulating him on being accepted and his score. A link was also included to a downloadable app only accessible to students of the school along with his unique login details.
After downloading the app and logging in he was taken to a folder of documents he would need to print off. A printed acceptance letter, hero costume design form, support gear form and dorm application form. The last item however was something he hadn't expected. Picking the envelope back up he noticed it still had weight to it after losing its main contents.
A small card the size of a driving licence fell onto his desk. On the front was a picture of himself and the details that would normally be on his student ID. Except the UA logo was printed across the back as well as the card's purpose, a provisional emergency quirk use licence. A variety of different people could acquire this licence, namely those who had a quirk that had a focus on healing or use in an emergency situation. Of the thousands of students applying for UA this year he would probably be one of maybe 6 or 7 who had one.
The licence would only allow him to use the 'regrowth', his ability to heal others, but once he had his provisional hero licence he would be able to use 'decomposition' as well. So while it wouldn't allow him to use his quirk in full, this was more than enough.
On the app along with the permit for the licence, was an incredibly long document stating the rules around when to use his provisional licence. Along the bottom of the permit were four signatures including principle Nezu, Chiyo Shuzenji or Recovery Girl, the signature from someone on the public quirk allowance board and the familiar signature of his quirk councillor.
For the next ten minutes he read through the form that was close to twelve pages pertaining to when he could use his quirk in a public setting. Given the amount of trust they had placed in him to give him such a responsibility, reading through the terms and conditions was the least he could do.
Just as he'd reached the last page his door creaked open. "Izuku, is everything-what did it say?" as fast as he could he brought his mother in for the biggest hug of her life.
"I'm in, I passed" Izuku barely whispered but it was loud enough for Inko to hear. It was also at this moment that her own walls fell as another Midoriya tsunami was unleashed. "Mom, don't cry. If you start crying i'll start again-"
"I'm just so proud of you Izuku" once more Izuku's flood gates fell as they both fell to their knees embracing while they began to flood their apartment complex. Before the two could flood Japan in tears the phone rang. His mother answered and it didn't take long for Izuku to figure out who was on the other end. Inko looked towards him with a genuine smile and without needing to hear it he knew there was good news in the Bakugo household as well.
"Sure thing, we'll meet you there. mm, see you in a bit".
"Was that Aunt Mitsuki? Did Bakugo pass?"
"You'll have to ask him yourself. Put your nice shirt on, we're eating out tonight" Inko beamed as she set about finding something nice to wear. Just as Izuku was about to close his door he heard her call out. "and not the one that says nice shirt".
/:-Sevens Chance-:\
The previous night had been a welcome end to the week. The restaurant they had gone to was famous throughout Japan for its katsudon dishes so for Izuku it was the ultimate reward. As expected, Katsuki had passed the exam, earning 72 villain points, the highest earned of that category but had managed to not gain any rescue points, at all.
While he had shown vast pride in his combat score Izuku could tell he was sour about the greenette beating him in total points. Even though he explained that they were looking more for the abilities of those who earned rescue points then those who solely went about earning villain points by beating bots. His explanation fell on deaf ears but he did look somewhat thoughtful when his mother had admonished him for his lack of teamwork.
The day following was spent almost entirely filling out the documents he would need to fill in. The first order of business was one he dreamt of filling in since he could remember. One of the folders hidden away contained old drawings he had made growing up, all in some way a homage to his favourite hero. But none of which would be relative to the person he was now.
It was while he was still coming up with ideas that he'd received a surprise. Around lunch his mother came through the door with a huge smile on her face as she hauled i a large shopping bag. "sorry Izuku, i might have jumped to conclusions a bit but"
"A jumpsuit!" he exclaimed, jumping up from his seat moving over to examine the gift.
"I know it may not be much now and i don't know quite how the school goes about it but, i just wanted to support you as much as i can..to make up for.." her voice had nearly faded towards the end but Izuku knew what he was on about. Hoping to cut off her downward mental spiral he closed the distance pulling his other into a bone crushing hug.
"It's perfect, if anything it's just what I needed." he reassured her, feeling the way her grasp strengthened at his words.
From there after a proper examination of the jumpsuit he was able to overcome his apparent designer's block and come up with a finalised hero costume incorporating his gift. A few aspects of the design did mean alterations to the jumpsuit but somehow he knew she wouldn't mind. A few aspects of the designs however would depend on another problem he would have to face.
The next was an application for support items, he had discussed this with his Doctor Chinen over the past few sessions since the exam about this. Qualifying for a hero course was one of the few ways one would be able to get access to CAD or Control Assistant Devices. Though with enough money or connections anyone with these could possess a CAD, an example he had already seen was the blonde haired boy shooting lasers from his stomach. During the exam Izuku had access to what was called a devicer, and though similar, was less suited for continuous use and was more for helping those like Izuku who had recently developed a quirk that was difficult to control.
The next day he sent the forms off through email and later that day he received confirmation of his paperwork completing. That night when Izuku sat down he took a breath of relief he didn't know he had been holding. While the next few days would be busy gathering or procuring things for the upcoming school year. For now at least the hard part was over, he had a foot in the door now. Now the rest would be up to him to complete but he could allow himself a moment to relax. Tomorrow was the start of the rest of his life.
The following week was the last full week of his time at middle school. Both he and Bakugo had been called into the principal's office to congratulate the two on their acceptance. Although apparently the principal hadn't been aware that Izuku had had his quirk come in, his acceptance had been a big surprise to the older man.
Because of Bakugo's recent change in personality, instead of an explosive response that Izuku was expecting he instead seemed almost proud in himself that he'd trained someone who had passed the exam despite having less then a years experience with a quirk. Although he had threatened to blow him to pieces if Izuku fell behind or dragged him down once they reached UA.

The weekend after his middle school closing ceremony, Izuku and Inko visited the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall to stock up on new clothes and supplies for starting UA. The dorms that had the option of staying in covered most of the necessities, even a set of uniforms were provided along with two sets of PE uniform.
Izuku had just exited one of the stationary stores with the purchase of a few new notebooks. While he had toned down his near constant note taking of quirks he encountered, he still planned to take notes on the students he would be working with. One of the others was to continue recording the progress he was making with his own quirk, recording the speed and difficulties in using both aspects of his quirk.
Just as he was about to make his way to the next shop on his list a cry made him stop. A child around 8 years old had caught his foot on the last step of the stairs tripping and fell across the floor. While he seemed brave at first the pain proved too much and had begun to sob. There was no parent in sight so izuku took the initiative and approached the crying child holding his hand out
"Are you okay?"
Taking him over to the nearest bench, Izuku quickly took out his handkerchief and his water bottle and applied a wet handkerchief to the child's slightly bloody knee. The child still seemed to be in great pain so quickly checking that there were no adults paying close attention, he looked at the child putting his finger to his own lips in a sign of secrecy. Izuku as covertly as he could wiped his knee using his quirk to heal the damaged area, returning its condition to just before the accident.
The child had a look of wonder and copied Izuku's gesture agreeing to keep his quirk use a secret
"Hey mister, are you a hero?" Asked the now healed kid.
"Not just yet, though I will be going to a hero school soon".
"Can I still become a hero, even if my quirk isn't that powerful?"
Izuku was immediately brought back to almost a year ago when he'd asked that question. A part inside Izuku went even further back, going as far back as when he brought his mother to tears at a similar question. Izuku gave it as much thought as he could, however his pause only seemed to worry the child.
"A hero can come in many shapes or forms. Whether they wear capes or masks, fight fire in burning buildings, fight crime in the police force or save a life on the operating table. Whether your quirk is flashy or powerful is irrelevant. Heroes existed long before quirks came into existence. If you save someone whatever form that may take, that will make you a hero". He announced ruffling the kids' hair.
"You must decide what kind of hero you want to be and follow that dream and remember to smile. The ones who smile are the strongest after all" he said with certainty as a voice hidden in the furthest part of his mind echoed the same words.
"Like All Might?"
"Yep, just like All Might".
As the child left spotting his parents, Izuku turned away giving a parting wave though his expression was more contemplative. "I think I get it now, what All Might was trying to tell me".

Unbeknownst to the contemplative teen he had an observer to his breach of the underage quirk use restrictions. While she had seen it as an appropriate use given the quirk used she still had a job to do. "-reporting in. target has made unlicensed use of quirk. However, breach is minor for healing use. Target has yet to make any moves or make contact with Subject Hephaestus. Will continue to monitor". With a click of her wrist her com channel was terminated.
Her job wasn't over for the day so she continued to tail loosely to the greenette. She had been briefed on her assignment a few months ago and despite the association's beliefs she couldn't see the connection between this kid and the monster that her superiors believed he could be.
After all, there was no way this kind hearted kid could be related to a yakuza boss.
