Year 3: Looking to the Future

The night of Sirius's trial, Harper snuck into Harry's room. Harry was waiting for her.

"Did anyone see you?" Harry asked.

"Sirius is sleeping in his dog form on the couch, snuggled next to Lucy. It's kind of cute," Harper said, not sure why Sirius was in his dog form instead of sleeping in a bed as a normal human, but she didn't want to question it. Daisy was on Harry's bed. "But yeah, no one saw me."

"Good. Come on in," Harry said, opening his trunk; the two jumped inside as the two went into the living area within.

"You know your trunk is nice. Ever just come into here to sleep while at Hogwarts?" Harper asked.

"With the way Ron snores, more than you think," Harry mused, taking out their family tree to ponder over. "So, there are a lot of interesting names here. I have been making a list of people to look up. Ignotus Peverell is at the top – on my side."

"The person I am most curious about is Adria," Harper said, pointing at the name of Salazar and Rowena's daughter. "What happened to her?"

"Maybe Helena Ravenclaw can tell us," Harry mused. "She is Adria's big sister." Harper gave a nod. "Speaking of her, we do have to decide what to do with this..." Harry took the child's bracelet they had out of the draw; the one with Adria's name on it in runes they had found in the Chamber. "You should have it. You're a girl."

"Harry, it's for a child. It's not going to fit me, and you know expansion charms would ruin it," Harper mused. "You know Adria is a pretty name."

"It is," Harry agreed.

"So, what about we keep this and one of us will one day have a daughter named Adria and she will get this?" Harper said.

"Deal," Harry nodded, holding out his hand, which Harper shook. The two put the bracelet away, looking over their family tree some more.

Word that the United States of America government had granted Sirius Black asylum had spread through Hogwarts fast; the British government and Daily Prophet were trying to imply it was wrongly decided, but the day before the students were to go home many owls came into the Great Hall with an American newspaper describing exactly what had happened and why Sirius Black was now free.

Albus Dumbledore himself had to smile, wishing he had been a bigger part of getting Sirius Black his freedom, but glad the man was safe.

He was in his office, looking over paperwork and trying to decide how to find another new Defense teacher when he heard a voice.

"It's always nice when an innocent man gets his freedom," this was Nicholas Flamel, standing in the doorway.

"Nicholas, I thought you'd left," Albus Dumbledore said, getting up. Nicholas and Perenelle had left the school the day after the protests for Buckbeak.

"Well, as we were getting together Vaults in Gringotts for each of our eight apprentices, Perenelle reminded me I forgot to give you something," Nicholas said, and held out a key on a keychain.

"Thank you," Albus said clearly confused, stepping forward, taking it.

"It's for our house," Nicholas Flamel said. "The deed has been signed over to you."

"Nicholas…" Albus began.

"You need a place away from here, Albus. The house and everything in it, is yours," Nicholas said. "Oh, and I should alert you we had Susan Bones place wards around it that we, ourselves, invented – a unique take on the Fidelius Charm, only instead of the secret being stored in a human, the secret is stored in an object. In this case, that set of keys. Now I gave them over to you, the charms have reset and only you can enter the house and allow others in," Nicholas said.

"Brilliant idea but what if someone were to steal the key from me?" Albus asked.

"That's the other brilliant part of it. The charms will only switch if the owner hands over the object the secret is stored in willing. If anyone steals that, they have a useless set of keys. Just make sure you give the keys to who you want to take over the place before you die or the wards will fail," Nicholas said.

"Brilliant!" Albus said with a nod, impressed by the charms. "But, what now for you, my old friend?"

"Perenelle and I are heading back to France. There's a tomb there with our names on it I think we should finally be put in," Nicholas said. "The French government is already ready to help us."

"Then… I guess this is our final goodbye," Albus said, sad by this.

"For now, this may be the last time you see me alive," Nicholas said with a sad nod. "But we'll see each other again someday. I don't want to say soon, but I expect not too long either. I'll await you for the next great adventure. Goodbye, my old friend." Albus Dumbledore and Nicholas embraced at this, and, as they parted, Nicholas headed for the door, but he stopped.

"Albus," Nicolas stated, "those four – Harry, Harper, Hermione, and Neville – look out for them. Train them well."

"I will," Albus said as Nicholas then left.

-Harry Potter-

It was a few weeks later when Albus finally got to the house given to him by Nicolas. He took a moment to take in the charms, impressed by them as he held the keys in his hand and went to the familiar small house near the cliff. Walking in, he took a breath as he looked around.

"Finally, it's time you showed," a voice said and Albus was shocked as he looked at the wall to see a portrait of Perenelle and Nicholas. The portrait showed them a bit younger than they were, but Albus smiled at them.

"I am glad to see you here," Albus said as he walked into the little living area. His eyes went to the books; Albus wondering if he should put an extra frame here for his own portrait that would one day hang in the headmaster office.

"Albus, you might want to look on the desk," Perenelle portrait said.

Dumbledore knew better than to argue with his friend, even a portrait of her. He went to the desk to see an old parchment rolled up. Albus unrolled it, surprised at the length. He paused for a moment, seeing Harry and Harper's names at the bottom. He now understood the reason behind showing the pair blood magic – it was to create this.

Albus smiled seeing Lily and Tim were, indeed, products of a Squib line. It made sense. His eyes went back as the names on the tree seemed to bunch together, but right at the top four names hit him right away…

"Salazar Slytherin and Rowena Ravenclaw had a daughter," Albus mumbled, not much surprised him but this did. Godric Gryffindor wasn't much of a surprise; he had long suspected the Potter line was the last of Godric's heirs, but Helga Hufflepuff was surprising. "Well Harper and Harry you two do have surprises in you." Albus smiled, wondering what to do with this information and decided nothing for now needed to be done. He would let them keep their secret and keep the information to himself for when it was needed.

-Harry Potter-

Ron Weasley sat on the chair he had in his shed – his father and mother were very pleased he got into wand making and had made him a shed in the back where he could experiment; putting safety spells on it in case he blew up a wand and setting up shelfs for him to put his finished wands. Olivander has gifted him some old, but still good, equipment that he himself didn't use anymore since he upgraded.

His eyes were on his drying rack; after being made, wands needed at least a day to rest before they were strong enough to use and pick a wizard or witch. The wand sitting there right now was the one he had made with Helia's tailfeather. Olivander had come yesterday and observed him as he used the feather. It was different from using tears, which he had done before. Olivander also had a word with his parents about Ron working in his shop this summer, too.

Ron was excited about the part-time job, but he was also excited and nervous about the wand here. He wanted it to choose him but was too afraid to pick it up and find out. He didn't notice the shadow that overtook him as someone came behind him.

"Is the wand meant to do something?" Ron nearly jumped and turned to see his oldest brother, Bill, standing there.

"Bill," Ron said with a smile. "What are you doing here?"

"Got some news, but seriously why are you staring at that wand?" Bill asked.

"My newest creation. Phoenix feather, black walnut wood, and 10 inches. I hope it chooses me," Ron said.

"Well, I have some experience with wands," a new voice spoke, and Ron blinked as a woman came to stand next to Bill; she had dark red hair with blue eyes and pale skin. She had glasses on and was wearing jeans and t-shirt. An older Niffler was at her feet as she put an arm around Bill. "I'm on my fourth."

"Fourth?" Ron asked shocked. "Who are you?"

"This is Mallory Crusher," Bill said, and Ron blinked. He had never met the Curse Breaker of Hogwarts before, even, though she seemed close to his entire family besides himself and Ginny. "Most people call her MC, though," Bill added with a smirk.

"Well, my first wand, dragon heart string, was broken by Patrica Rakeprick in Year 5," Mallory started to explain, pulling a face as she said the name. "Then my second wand, unicorn hair core, was broken during my final battle with R in my last year – don't ask." Ron knew better than to ask anyway. "My third wand, a phoenix tail feather… oh that wand was beautiful – but Bill here activated a curse in a tomb, and I had to break the wand to use the feather to reverse the curse."

"I said I was sorry," Bill said giving a small smile. "And it was a brilliant idea. Great piece of curse breaking."

"Yeah, suck up," MC said, but was clearly kidding with Bill who laughed. "So now my fourth wand is Sphinx hair." MC removed the wand from her holster on her hip.

"Sphinx hair, really?" Ron asked, wanting to take a closer look.

"My point being," MC said, putting the wand away. "A wand can only choose you if you pick it up. Go on and give it a wave."

Ron nodded and took a breath, grabbing the wand giving it a wave. He frowned though, as nothing happened. "It… it feels better than most of my wands. An okay connection, but still not completely there," Ron mumbled clearly disappointed. "It will work well for me though until I can make the right one."

"Oh, well, come on in. I called a family meeting," Bill said, putting a hand on Ron's back as Ron put the phoenix wand back down to rest and followed the two to the Weasley kitchen. Ron was surprised by literally everyone being there; Percy who had barely been around since getting his job at the ministry was present, and even Charlie was there.

"Mallory," Molly said, giving her a hug and MC returned the hug.

"So, why did I get called all the way from Romania?" Charlie asked, giving the two a smile.

"We have some news," Bill said. "Mallory and I have been transferred out of Egypt."

"Transferred?" Arthur asked.

"See, Gringotts here have been digging new tunnels to open new vaults and they found a vault already there. It's heavily protected though and they need a couple of curse breakers to get into the vault and then investigate and uncurse everything inside," Bill said. "A job that could take several years, at least."

"You're moving back?" Molly asked, unable to hide her happiness at this.

"We're moving back," Bill nodded, and Molly gave a happy cry as she hugged her eldest son. "We were hoping we could stay here until we find a place of our own…?"

"Of course! MC, you can bunk with Ginny and Bill I am sure Ron won't mind sharing a room," Molly said, and Ron gave a nod, not noticing the look Bill and MC shared at the sudden room arrangements.

"I still don't see why I am here," Charlie said.

"Well, that comes to our next piece of news," Bill said. "MC...?"

Mallory held up her hand and moved her fingers a little and Ron finally saw a ring on her ring finger – a diamond ring.

"I hope you all don't mind me becoming a Weasley," MC said, and the room seemed unusually quiet for a moment before the Weasley family reacted; Molly screaming in joy as the rest of the group brought both Mallory and Bill into hugs. Charlie, Fred, and George happily called Mallory their sister.

"Have you given any thought to the wedding?" Molly asked once the excitement died down.

"We were hoping to have it here," MC said. "In the backyard before Hogwarts starts for the year so the younger Weasleys can be there. If you don't mind, that is?"

"Mind? Of course, you can have it here. We can get a tent," Molly said.

"I know where we can rent one," Arthur said. "And we'll get food ready."

"And invites," Molly said. "We'll get this all sorted."

"Thank you," MC said. "Don't worry about getting someone to perform the ceremony. I can handle that," Bill and MC shared a look and Ron wondered who they had in mind, but talk went into other details.

It was after dinner; Ron had finally gotten back to his shed. The sun was going down and he had to light a candle to see. He was holding the phoenix wand. It was close. He knew that. Maybe it was just the wood or length that stopped it from choosing him officially? He would figure it out.

Ron put it down and then looked at some other objects he had in the room. Soon after Hogwarts ended, he had gotten a key to a Gringotts Vault that Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel had left for him. He hadn't gotten the chance to look into the vault yet, but he planned to go before or after his work at Olivanders. He had a couple more objects for wand cores; he had used the griffin feathers Harry and Harper had given him; he'd got one wand and blown the other one up accidentally. With Newt Scamander bringing creatures to Care of Magical creatures, he had also gotten a few odds and ends. And Charlie promised to send him more dragon scales and teeth. He was running low though.

His hand went to the piece of Dementor Cloak Hermione had presented to him. Touching it was weird; it felt weird, and he could almost feel the dark magic off it, making him shiver.

He moved and took out a book that had some more details on Dementor Cloaks wands on it – looking over the qualities, he decided to try it out and started work preparing for making the Dementor Cloak a wand core.

If he had turned the page of the book beyond that of the instructions, though, he would have seen the warning to not use the full cloak as a wand core and always combine it with a powerful, lighter, object to balance out the dark traits. He didn't though, planning on using it as a solo wand core.

Post Chapter Note: And that's the official end of Year 3. Yes, some big changes from the books now, with Sirius in America, Bill and MC marrying and everything to do with the Flamel apprentices. Don't worry, we have plans…
