Ugh. Nineteen. I thought while looking at my reflection in the mirror this morning. What a weird number. An even weirder age. Technically when you turn eighteen, you're considered a legal adult, and even though it still has that "teen" in it, it feels special. It's an important age. But nineteen? There's nothing special about nineteen. In fact, it almost feels like you've taken a step back. Like you're going backwards from eighteen. I don't know why it feels this way, but what I do know is I didn't want to be nineteen. I hope these next few months go fast. I sighed dramatically.
Although, I thought turning sideways, I am looking…good. I smiled and nodded to myself. I'm short, I'm petite. I had to except that a long time ago. However, I had a great figure. I had curves and shapely legs. My breasts were now a beautiful C-cup, I hope they don't get any bigger though. I like them that size.
I turned so that I could see the back of me. My ass was looking pretty good too. I had to laugh at that thought.
My hair was a little longer than shoulder length and had curls. Not the bouncy kind, the almost wavy kind. My favorite feature, though, had to be my face. I'm not going to fuck with myself and pretend like I didn't know that I have a pretty face. Even though I was older now, I didn't wear makeup. Some of the women here clearly did, but I didn't think I needed it. Plus, it's the fucking apocalypse. If you care about that, then you're superficial.
Despite everything that I've just said, here's the thing: why was I still single? Why was I so lonely? It seems like everybody has somebody but me. Well…not Daryl, but…that's just Daryl. I'm still a virgin at nineteen. I want to change that. I don't even have to be dating anyone, I just want to finally have sex.
There's nobody here, though. There wasn't anyone at Alexandria around my age. There were kids and older adults, but nobody my age. I don't even think there's even anyone at The Hilltop around my age, not at the Kingdom either. There was definitely guys around my age at The Sanctuary, but…that can't happen. I can't even think about that.
Things aren't how they used to be. I couldn't just go out and expect to meet someone. (1. It was dangerous and (2. most of the population was wiped out. But I didn't really have any other choice. What else could I do? I had to at least try.
So, that's what I was going to do. I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs.
My dad and Michonne were already up with Judith trying to get her to eat. My little sister is two now and sort of becoming a nightmare.
"Mornin'." My dad said when he saw me.
"Morning." I said back without as much enthusiasm and started to pour myself a cup of coffee. Judith screeched and put her arms out when she saw me, but I pretended not to notice. I wanted to go out today, not babysit.
"Goin' somewhere?" My dad asked me. He must have noticed my bag.
I gulped some coffee before answering him. "Yup." I exhaled.
"Where?"
I decided to tell them what I was doing. They definitely wouldn't take me seriously and think that I'm joking. "I'm gonna go look for a boyfriend." I raised my eyebrows.
They both let out a laugh. "What?" Said Michonne. "You think you'll find one that easily?"
"I'm ambitious." I smirked. "And I'm hot as fuck." I laughed. "I could get any guy I want." I joked.
"Abigail." My dad said and gave me a look, he still kind of laughed though.
"I'm just kidding." Even though I wasn't. "I figured I could go look for food or anything that could be useful."
There was a slight pause. "Ya know with all the communities helping each other now," my dad started, "we don't have to go out as much anymore."
Here we go. I almost rolled my eyes. "I know." I said annoyed. "But I want to."
"Why?" Michonne gave me a weird look.
I shrugged. "I like it." I quickly finished my coffee. "Anyway, I gotta go." I sat my cup in the sink. "Bye, daddy." I quickly kissed his temple. "Bye, Michonne. Bye, Judy." I almost walked passed her without realizing. And with that, I headed out.
I decided to walk and not take a car, I didn't want to use the fuel and also I enjoy the exercise. I left the area and traveled more into the city. If there was anything good, it would probably be farther out where no one has checked yet.
As I made my way deeper into the city, I looked around at all the buildings and everything and thought about how bad it all looked. It's still crazy to me even after all these years how things are now compared to what they used to be. A snarl brought me out of my thoughts. I gasped and hid behind a building until the walker passed. It was just one but I was afraid of the noise drawing more. Once it was far enough away, I took my chance and ran down the road.
There was a weapons shop that I wanted to check out. I figured there wouldn't be anything left but I should still give it a try. I took my normal precautions then went in with my gun up. There didn't appear to be any walkers, plus this is a small place so I don't think there would be anywhere for anything or anyone to hide.
I immediately started looking around. I didn't find any guns, but I did find a couple boxes of bullets. That's a good enough find as it is. Ammo is getting super hard to find. Luckily, we have Eugene to make them.
The only other thing I found was a little axe, I figured I might need it at some point so I just stuck it in my gun belt. It was time to leave after that and check some other places.
As I walked down the street, I spotted a smoke shop. The sight of it gave me an idea, which made me smile. I shouldn't but…I'm going to. I walked inside.
I smoked my vape pen as I searched around. It tasted good as I inhaled then blew out a bunch of smoke. I know they're bad but…they're still fun. There was a lot of places to check in the city but I couldn't check them all. That would take way too long. So, I just picked a few more places, which barely had anything, then I started to leave.
I was gone for a pretty long time already and didn't really have anything to show for it. I sighed heavily after having that thought. Just then, my eyes widened at what I saw. There were three FEMA trailers set up behind some buildings. I bet there's food in there! I quickly but carefully approached the trailers. I opened a door to one of them with my gun up. There was no one inside so I began looking around. I was right. They were filled with food and medical supplies! I hit the fucking jackpot! I can't believe no one's found these yet. I smiled while looking at a can of food in my hand.
I backed out and down out of that trailer so I could look in the other two. I heard a snarl and looked up. A walker was headed right towards me. I pulled out my knife and started towards it when another one followed after it. I can still handle two.
However, a third walked from around the building too, this one had an army uniform on. I stopped and pulled out my gun instead. Better to be safe. I aimed at the closest one and shot it in the head, it fell to the ground dead. I was about to shoot the army guy when I noticed something. My eyes widened. It had a grenade attached to its vest. I put my gun down. I have to be really careful.
While I was thinking how to handle this, the other walker got closer to me and was coming fast. It was tall so I pushed it forward not really thinking. It hit into the army walker. "No!" I said and jumped back. "Oh shit!" It grabbed onto the army walker and pulled the grenade. I gasped and ran then ducked behind a dumpster. A big explosion happened.
I finally looked up when it seemed safe. Well…the two walkers were gone…but so was the FEMA trailers. All three of them were on fire. I just stood there and watched them burn. I sighed and my shoulders slumped.
I was pissed off. All that food and medical supplies gone to waste. And what's more, It's going to take me until dark to get home on foot and I have nothing at all to show for it. This whole trip was a complete waste.
I headed back towards home. There was a gas station up ahead. I could stay here for the night since it'll be dark soon or I could just risk it and get home late. I wasn't sure what I would do yet but I figured I would check the gas station out first anyway.
I peeked through the dirty glass window. There didn't appear to be anything inside but I knocked on the glass just in case. One walker came out. My mouth pressed into a thin line as I opened the door a little then stabbed it in the head. I threw the now dead walker aside and went in. I found a few drinks and bags of chips and candy, but that was about it. I drank one of the drinks that I found but decided to keep the snacks for later.
Walking around out back, I realized that there was like a garage or something. Inside was a big white U-Haul truck. I quickly lifted the back, then immediately stepped back with my gun up. There was no people or walkers but…there was a ton of food and supplies! My jaw dropped, then I laughed.
I hopped up on the truck to get a better look at everything. I saw peanut butter and chocolate and meat sticks and water, toilet paper, soap, and disinfectant and so much more! It went all the way to the back of the truck! I was so pumped!
This must be my reward for what happened back in the city. I smiled and stepped down off the truck as I closed it up.
"Hands up!" A voice said.
My eyes widened and I gasped. Turning with my gun up, there was a woman that looked to be a little older than me. "Maybe you should put your hands up." I said to her. I wasn't scared at all.
"I wouldn't." She said.
"Why's that?" I said smartly.
"That's why." She pointed behind me.
I turned and saw a man there too. Damn. I thought for a moment then, sighed. I'm outnumbered. "Fine." I said. I put my gun down and put my hands up. The guy collected my weapons.
"No one has to get hurt." The guy said. "We just want the truck."
"I found it first." I snapped. It sounded more childish than I wanted it to.
"It's ours now." The woman said. "We need it."
I squinted at her looking them both up and down. They were both pretty dirty and didn't look too good. "Bullshit." I said. "I got a whole community. You two look like you live out here."
"Which is why we need it." Said the man.
I stared at him. Maybe I can help them out. Figure out a way that everyone wins. "You don't have to do this." I said. "You guys can come back with me. My community will take you in." I nodded.
The guy laughed. "Now that's…some bullshit." He mocked me.
"I'm serious." I gave them a serious look. "They will. And we can all benefit from the food on this truck."
"Sorry, but no thanks." He said.
"Oh, come on. You two look awful. Don't you want to—
I was cut off by the woman shooting the ground by my foot. My eyes widened immediately and I jumped. "What we want…is the truck." She said. "Keys." She put out her hand.
I glared at her for a long time. Stupid people. I don't know why I even bother trying to help them. Feeling annoyed and defeated, I slapped the keys in her hand. She ran and got in the truck while her boyfriend held me up.
"Back up." He said. I did what he said. "Sorry about this." He said as he got in the truck.
"You will be." I said. I stood in the street and watched them ride away in my truck. "Great." I said.
I decided after my complete failure of a day that I wasn't going to waste anymore time and just head home. I usually come back with some good stuff every time I go out so it sucks that I have to tell everyone that I don't have anything this time.
I smoked my vape and continued on down the street. I inhaled deeply, then spotted something ahead. It was getting dark so it was a little hard to see, but my eyes finally focused on what it was. It was the truck. My truck.
I blew the smoke out and ran towards it. There were walkers kneeling on the ground eating something…or I guess I should say someone. It was those people. That couple. I watched the walkers eating their remains. "Well," I said and took a puff from my vape, "should'a came back with me." I shrugged.
I collected my weapons from them and killed the walkers, then I climbed up in the truck, the keys were still in the ignition. I let out a laugh as I put it in drive and drove home.
I drove up to the gates of Alexandria, then stopped. "It's me!" I yelled out the window. They opened the gates for me. I drove through, then parked.
"What's with the truck?" Rosita asked me.
"You'll see." I smiled. She cocked an eyebrow at me. I opened the back and showed her all the food and supplies.
"Wow." She said looking it over. "Good job, girl."
I smiled.
"Holy smokes." Aaron said walking over. "Did you find this?" He asked me.
"Yup." I said. People gathered around to look. My dad and Michonne came out to look too, along with Daryl. I didn't see him this morning, he must have gotten back from wherever he was. They all praised me, then we helped to carry all the stuff to the pantry.
I found two fishing rods in the back of the truck. "I'm taking one of these." I said to my dad.
"What the hell you gonna do with that?" Daryl asked me.
"Fish." I stated.
"You know how?" Michonne asked.
"No, but…I'm sure I can figure it out." I shrugged.
"Uh huh. Okay." She said with a smile. She turned away and picked up another box. "Abby, why don't go home and get some dinner." She nodded. "I saved you a plate."
"Okay, thanks." I said. "But after I finish with these boxes."
"Nah. We got it." Daryl said. "You go on home. And don't make me tell ya twice." He raised his eyebrows at me.
"Ha. Yes, sir." I said sarcastically. Daryl and I always joke around with each other.
I heated up the tuna patties and mushroom soup that Michonne left for me, then ate it. After that, I took a nice hot shower to wash today off me. I got dressed in comfy clothes, then fixed my hair.
Now I was sitting in the living room with my dad, Michonne and Judith. My little sister was on my lap, she fell asleep. I think it's nice that she likes me, but I just hope she doesn't think that I'm her mom or something. That'd be weird.
"Thanks for dinner." I said to Michonne. It was quiet so I just wanted to say something.
She smiled. "You did a good job finding all that stuff."
"Yeah, you really did, Abby." My dad said. "You always find good stuff."
I shrugged. "Just happens, I guess." Then I thought about what I went through today. "But…it wasn't easy." I leaned back.
"No one would doubt that." My dad said. There was a brief pause, then my dad yawned. "Well, I'm just about ready for bed."
"Me too." Michonne widened her eyes.
My dad looked over at me. "Abby?"
"…I'mma stay up for a little bit."
"Okay. I'll take Judith then." He lifted her off me and headed for the stairs. "Night."
"Night." I said to both of them. They went upstairs.
I felt my vape in my pocket and went outside so I can smoke a little. I stood on the porch and looked out at the night sky thinking about if this is how things will always be. I love my dad but…I don't want to live with him and Michonne forever.
Just then, the door opened then slammed closed. A moment later, I felt arms wrap around me from behind and smiled. Daryl rested his chin on my head, he had a cigarette in his mouth and tapped my forehead with it. I let out a laugh.
He let go of me and moved over, then lit his cigarette. "What's 'at?" He asked as I took a puff from my vape.
"A vape pen." I said. "You wanna try it?"
"Nah." He didn't look up when he said it.
"Why not? It's Mountain Dew flavored." I said then laughed.
"Get the hell outta here with that." He said. I laughed harder and took another puff then blew out all the smoke. "Where'd ya find that truck?"
I shrugged. "It was just sitting at a gas station."
"Huh. Really?"
"Yeah." I let out a laugh. There was a brief pause. I realized right then that I didn't even tell anyone about my day. I took a breath before speaking. "After I found it, this man and woman held me up, they took it." I said. Daryl looked over at me. "I tried to…talk them out of it by saying they could come back with me but…guess they didn't want to." I looked down for a moment then back at him. "I found them on the road. I should say what was left of them. Walkers got them." I stated then shrugged. "Their loss."
Daryl snorted. "Yeah. That's how that goes."
"Yeah." I let out a laugh. I also told him about what happened in the city.
"Sounds like ya had a day." He said.
I looked down for a moment. "At least it wasn't for nothing."
Daryl flicked his cigarette into the yard, then rubbed my shoulder as he walked by. He stopped at the door. "You comin'?"
"Uh…yeah, I probably should." He held the door for me and guided me inside. Our house had a basement that was a whole other house so that's where Daryl lived. I went upstairs, he went downstairs.
I decided to go fishing the next day. There was a nice spot that I sometimes go to and sit by the river and just like read and stuff. I bet it's the perfect place to fish. I arrived there and set up. Fishing can be super boring so luckily I brought a book and some snacks with me.
I felt something tug on my line and my eyes widened. I got a bite already! I reeled it in fast, it was pretty heavy whatever it was. Reeling in my line, I saw that it was just some kind of plant. "Shit." I said. I was having trouble getting the leaves off.
"Hi." I heard next to me. I immediately threw down my rod and pointed my gun. It was a guy that looked to be around my age. "Whoa!" He said with his hands up. "I'm not gonna hurt you."
"What do you want?" I said firmly.
"I saw you struggling with your line and thought I could help."
I gave him a stupid look. "What?"
"Have you ever fished before? I have. I could help." He took a step towards me.
"Hey, back up!" I yelled.
"Whoa! Slow down." He did what I said and stopped though. "Listen, I saw you sitting there. If I wanted to hurt you, I could've done it a long time ago."
"So, you were watching me?" I snapped.
"No. I mean…yes. But not like that."
I gave him a weird look. No one said anything for a minute. "What do you want?" I yelled at him.
"Just…just let me." He said wide-eyed. "Look, I'll put my gun on the ground." He slowly pulled out his gun and laid it down.
"Okay." I said.
"I just wanted to help." He said. "Can I?"
I thought for a moment. "Fine." I threw my rod at him, he caught it. "But I don't trust you. So I'm not putting my gun down."
"You don't have to." He said. He started fixing my line for me. "Also, your bobber wasn't on right. You do it like this." He showed me. I paid attention but also kept my eye on him.
"Alright, thanks." I said once he fixed my line for me.
"Do…do you mind if I fish with you?" He asked. "I come here a lot."
I gave him a look. "Well, I come here too and I don't recall ever seeing your weird ass around here."
He smiled. "We must come at different times." There was a brief pause. "My name's Leon, by the way."
My head tilted. I've always liked that name before because there's a character in my favorite video game named Leon. "Is that your real name?"
"Why wouldn't it be?"
I shrugged. "I just never met anyone named Leon before." I told him. "I've always liked that name though."
"Really? I kinda hate it."
"…my favorite video game has a guy in it named Leon." I said feeling stupid.
"Resident Evil Four?" He said and my jaw dropped.
"Yeah!" I smiled real big and put my gun down.
"It's a good game."
"It's the best." I raised my eyebrows.
We both laughed. "So…you didn't tell me your name."
My smile faded a little. "Abby. It's Abby."
"Pretty name for a pretty girl." He said.
I scoffed. "Don't. I still don't trust you."
"Damn. I was gonna ask if I could buy you a drink." He smirked.
I had to smile at that. Then, I had a thought. What am I doing? I don't know this guy. "What are you doing out here anyway?" I shook my head.
He shrugged. "Food, supplies. You know, the works."
"Yeah." I said.
There was a pause. "I got an idea." Leon said. "I'll help you catch some fish and then I'll trade you some bread and jam for some of your fish."
I cocked an eyebrow. "You have bread?"
He took a bag of bread out of his bag along with some jars of jam. I looked at it in awe. "A lady makes—I mean…a lady taught me how to make it."
"Oh." I said. "That's pretty cool."
"So…do we have a deal?"
I thought about it. I couldn't remember the last time I had bread and those jams look really good. "Sure." I said. "Yeah." I pointed at him. "But no funny business."
"Got it." Leon put his hands up.
I'm back! :D LOL! I thought I was done, but I just can't stop :O Hope you enjoyed this chapter! Please leave me a review and let me know what you thought of chapter one! Thanks!
