Writers Notes: Welcome to Bordeline Betrayal!
War and devastation… the loss of humanity… people aren't perfect, but then again, that is what makes you human. In the beginning, as far back as history allows, there has been disaster. It's why our city is the way it is now. The ruins of Seattle. Man went to war and with that brought a nuclear fallout. Our founding fathers fought to build Seattle the way it is now. Factions. Everyone had a purpose or a role. It was a balance that prevented war… prevented death.
But it also… prevented growth.
There are five factions. Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite. Abnegation are the civil servants of the faction system. They believe in them before me. They uphold the laws, an established council that was created to ensure that everything remained in order. Amity were the kind ones, peaceful. They don't believe in violence or the use of violence. They are our farmers, our workers. Without them, our city would starve. Candor are honest. They don't believe in telling lies and only seek the truth. Dauntless are the fearless, the law enforcement. They live dangerously, always proving that there are more exciting things to life. Then there is Erudite. They are arrogant, yet intelligent. They believe that they are the superior faction because of their intelligence.
Every year, as far as any of us can remember, there has been a ceremony. When you turn eighteen, you go through aptitude tests. These tests are guides that help you decide where you belong in society. What you score for your faction, isn't the faction you have to choose, but it is highly encouraged. Everything becomes a balance and upsetting that balance… could be dangerous… or so we're told.
Isabella looked at herself in the mirror, her dark hair was wound up in a tight bun on her head. The grey dress she wore went to her ankles and her sleeves went all the way to her wrist. Her eyes were uniquely blue green, with rings of golden brown around the center. Her skin was smooth, pale and her lips pouted delicately. Her cheekbones were high, more pronounced and she had a subtle beauty to her. Living in Abnegation, growing up there, made her accept that she wasn't perfect and that she could never be vain. She was the oldest of her siblings, though they were technically all eighteen now. Caleb and Beatrice were number two and three of the triplets that her parents gave birth to. The Priors were simple, of course that was Abnegation… simple. Isabella's test results were vague or unclear for her. She wasn't sure what she was going to choose. The aptitude test was supposed to show her the right choice to make.
"Isabella." Beatrice called her sister's name. Beatrice and Isabella were similar. Beatrice had dark hair, though it was a shade lighter. Her eyes were a hazel color, matching her mother's eyes. Caleb was the tallest, light brown hair and green eyes.
Isabella looked over at Beatrice. "Oh, hey."
"We're leaving together. Ceremony will start soon."
Isabella nodded and closed the mirror up. She wasn't supposed to look in mirrors, it was considered vain, but she sometimes she needed to see herself to move through her own thoughts. She followed Beatrice out of the house and they headed towards Candor proper to the awards hall to go through the ceremony of choosing a new faction.
"Whatever happens today, remember that it is okay if things change." Caleb reassured his sisters. They had never been separated. They were close, all three of them and some would even say they were the best of friends.
"Don't get so sentimental now." Isabella teased. Beatrice smiled and linked her arm with her sister's and the three of them continued towards Candor proper, where they would make life changing decisions.
Everyone was seated auditorium style, factions sat with their own factions. Isabella, Beatrice and Caleb's parents were there. Natalie and Andrew Prior, smiling at their children, encouragement that today would be the best day of their lives. The sea of grey was drab, but the rest of the auditorium seemed vibrant. Amity was a host of colors, orange, yellow and red. Erudite were blue and white. Candor were dressed in white and Dauntless seemed to be the dark end of the rainbow, all decked out in black, and some dark purples shadowed in between.
"Good morning," the voice of Jeanine Mathews, head of Erudite, filtered into the auditorium. Jeanine was in her forties, her blond hair was streaked with some gray and her blue eyes crinkled a little at the edges. She was dressed professionally, the blue of Erudite was bold against her paler skin. Her eyes were blue, Isabella knew because Jeanine's face was on posters around Seattle as the spokesperson for the city. "Today is an important day. A day where all of you become full-fledged, working adults in this society. Two days ago, you took an aptitude test. The test designed to keep the balance here in Seattle. It is not required for you to choose what is on your aptitude test, but remember, there is no going back. Faction before blood." She said, her lips were pursed in a professional smile. "We will start with Erudite. When your name is called you will come to the stage, you will use the ceremonial knife to draw blow, and then you will select the bowl that corresponds with the faction you wish to join." She said and then she looked over to the right at an Asian man that everyone knew as Jack Kang and he started reading names off a list.
Isabella felt a little nervous, the thought of leaving home was exciting. She thought about Dauntless… fearless and so brave. She had always found them fascinating. They were extreme and Bella sometimes felt like she was stifled there in Abnegation, so she knew she wouldn't stay, even if it hurt her parents, she knew that she didn't belong to Abnegation. She felt it in her heart. But she was afraid of leaving behind everything she knew. Everyone she cared about, the friends that she had made there in Abnegation. Her sister… her brother. It was hard to uproot, but she knew it was necessary. By the time it came around to Abnegation, Isabella had stamped down the nerves, she was sure now, without a doubt that she would choose Dauntless.
"Beatrice Prior." Jack called Beatrice's name and Beatrice went to the stage, her eyes were confused, clouded a little and Isabella could tell that she was anxious. Beatrice picked up the knife and she slid it across her palm carefully and she stood on the stage, hesitating just briefly before she moved her hands over the hot coals of Dauntless and let her blood drop and sizzle against the coals. It was shocking, especially to their parents. Andrew looked the most disturbed that his daughter would change factions. Abnegation rarely changed factions and the last person to change factions, started a bunch of rumors that Marcus Eaton beat his son, a reputation that could ruin you in Abnegation.
"Caleb Prior." Jack called Caleb now to the stage. Caleb reached over and patted Isabella's hand before he left, going down to the stage. He seemed more sure of himself, picking up the knife and slicing his palm. He moved his hand across the bowl for Erudite and Jack's voice announced Caleb's switch to Erudite. Andrew was in shock still, but Natalie patted her husband's hand, trying to keep him calm as they watched their son disappear into the sea of blue.
"Isabella Prior." Jack called Isabella's name. Isabella rose, glancing back at her parents, her mom smiled at her and gave her a nod, like a reassurance that everything was going to be fine. Isabella took the stage, picking up the knife and she sliced her palm and she looked at the bowls in front of her. She knew that this would hurt her parents greatly, but she needed this change. Caleb had said it himself. She moved her hand over the bowl with coals, and her blood sizzled like her sister's had before.
"Dauntless." Jack announced and Isabella moved down towards the wave of hollering that was Dauntless. They patted her on the back, welcomed her, whistled and accepted her into their ranks.
At the end of the ceremony they were set free, released to go back to their new factions. Beatrice and Isabella hugged each other.
"I can't believe we did this." Beatrice exclaimed as they rushed towards the train that the other Dauntless kids and recruits were running towards. The next test was to catch the train and it was exhilarating. Isabella rushed, running, catching the handle and pulled herself up into the train car with Beatrice right behind her. They were giggling, the rush of excitement going through both of them.
"Hi. I'm Christina." A girl that was sitting across from them introduced. Her hair was black and went to her shoulders and her skin was a light mocha color, her eyes like coal and she was wearing Candor white and black.
Isabella smiled. "Isabella, this is my sister Beatrice." It was nice to see a friendly face and Isabella knew that she made the right decision then, to make the change she desperately needed.
Christina looked out the window. "Oh wow."
"What?" Beatrice asked as she leaned forward.
"We're jumping to a rooftop!"
"What?" Isabella sat forward then, looking. "They're trying to kill us." She said and scrambled to her feet. "Okay, we can do this. Let's go together." She said, looking at her sister and at Christina. The girls clasped hands and waited at the opening of the train car, waited until the right moment and the three leapt together, landing on the roof and rolling.
They laughed as they got their footing. Isabella and Beatrice's hair was falling loose in some spots, but neither girl moved to fix their hair. They were high on the adrenaline from jumping off the traincar. They saw everyone gathering at the edge of the building, so they joined, smiling at each other.
The man that stood by the edge of the rooftop looked sharp, his blonde hair was slicked back on his head and the sides were shaved. His brow was pierced, he had tattoos on his neck and arms and his ears were pierced. His arms were bare, it detailed the strength he clearly had and the tight leather vest also showed the muscles in his chest. He had a red patch on the front of his vest, that Isabella was sure meant something.
"Listen up. There is one way into Dauntless. You jump." His voice was deep, but not too deep, and had a certain level of gravel to it. His tone was clipped, like he was irritated, or disinterested, but that was likely part of being Dauntless.
"Is there like… a net at the bottom?" One boy asked.
The man arched is pierced brow. "Are you, like, a pussy?" He quipped back. His eyes scanned the group of recruits. "Alright, who's first?"
No one immediately stepped forward, so Isabella raised a hand. "I'll go first."
The man made a hmph noise. "Get up here stiff." He muttered. That was what everyone called the people in Abnegation, stiffs, since everything was so stifling there.
Isabella moved forward, brushing past people. She shrugged off her sweater and then looked at the edge, she hiked up her skirts on her dress and then the man held out a hand and she placed her delicate hand in his rough one and he helped her up on the ledge. He did it silently, but he studied her as she stood there. She just spread her arms out and she stepped forward without a moment of hesitation. The wind whipped around her as she fell. It felt so nice somehow, falling without care. She hit a net and she bounced a few times and she smiled, her heart leaping in her chest from the excitement. A moment later the net dipped and she rolled towards another man, his hair was dark, shaggy but clean and he had dark eyes. He seemed strong.
"What's your name?" He asked, his voice was smooth, sultry. Isabella paused a moment. "You can pick any name you like, but you can't change it later."
"Bella… my name is Bella." Bella said, smiling a little. The man nodded and then his hands went to her waist, and he hoisted her out of the net, and set her on the ground.
"First jumper, Bella." He announced and then there were some cheers.
Every new recruit to Dauntless were given new clothes, black leather jacket, black pants, black shirt, black boots, even black underwear. They were shoved in a room that would act as their sleeping quarters, cots lined up and down in rows and there was no separation from the girls and boys. They were expected to change and burn their old clothes, essentially burning away their old factions.
Bella ignored everyone around her as she changed. Her sister changed her name to Tris and Bella loved the change. Tris was more reserved and shyer about changing in front of everyone, but she managed to get changed. They were all supposed to meet back in what they called the pit, which was the area they walked into after everyone jumped. There was a large board with numbers on it, but it was blank beside each number and it only went up to 33.
"Alright, you chose Dauntless today, starting this year, we get to choose you." The man from the roof said, his tone harsh.
"What does that mean?" A boy asked, confused.
"It means, stay out of the red and you won't go factionless." The man said and there were shocked murmurs.
"Why didn't we know this before?" Another boy asked.
The man arched his brow. "Why? So you would have selected a different faction? Dauntless is not for the weak, physically and mentally. It is our job to protect this city and you need to be prepared to live up to the task." His voice was booming now. "So, you're being graded on everything. Even when you think you're not being graded… you are. Don't think this is going to be a walk in the park, regardless if you're Dauntless born or a transfer." He said and he looked over at a colleague. "You take the transfers. I'm taking the Dauntless born." The other guy was the guy from the net, he just nodded, his arms crossed, his face passive. "Alright, Dauntless born ,you're with me. Transfers go with Four." He called out and everyone started shuffling.
Bella looked at the group of transfers. There were twelve of them including herself.
"Alright, we have an even number so we're going to partner up, go through some simple exercises just to test out your knowledge of martial arts combat." The man called Four said and then he started pairing them up. Bella got paired up with a guy and she realized that was probably intentional. The guy across from her was taller than she was, his hair was like bronze silk, sculped on his head perfectly and he was definitely a pretty boy. His eyes were like sprigs of green and his face was emotionless as well, or at least he was trying to be. "Introduce yourselves, they are your opponent but also your comrade."
Bella nodded, extending a hand. "Bella."
"Edward." He said and shook her hand briefly.
"Alright, three rounds, go until you tap, just know if you tap, you're being graded so, it's best to get knocked out." Four said and then he paused and looked around. "Alright, go."
Bella moved away instantly because Edward lunged forward, a predictable move. Edward was fast, his punched clipping her in her side, but she pushed past the pain and she danced around him. She was moving differently than Edward, her skill was obviously there, but the style was much different than his. It was almost like she was dancing while fighting and it seemed to frustrate Edward as she continued to layer on hits, busting open his nose where blood was coming out, making his ears ring from being struck there, finally, Bella whirled around and what he thought was a front kick ended up being a spinning crescent kick to his head and it was lights out. Bella spun with the direction of her kick and returned her foot to the ground gracefully, her hands were up, loosely guarding her face, but when Edward didn't get back up, she dropped her hands.
Four walked over, obviously impressed that someone from Abnegation would even be able to take someone down. Tris didn't do well against Peter an obnoxious Candor transfer, because she was also knocked out right now. "Alright, winner of those rounds. We'll pair you up again." He said and then he paired Bella with Peter and Christina had won against Al, a skiddish Erudite transfer and was now paired against another guy, his blonde hair was longer, brushing his shoulders and his eyes were a honey color. He seemed passive as well, easily containing his emotions so Christina couldn't figure him out. Candor were usually good at reading people.
Bella looked at Peter, he looked smug.
"You're gonna die stiff." Peter goaded her. His brown hair was slightly messy on his head, his eyes a darker blue color. He was clearly strong, and he was cocky.
Bella didn't give him the satisfaction of getting upset, she ignored his quips and when Four said go, she lashed out first this time, spinning in and knocking Peter backwards with a double fist strike, one to the clavicle and one to the lower gut. It startled Peter, made him growl and then he flung himself at her, trying to use brute force to take Bella done. She felt her lip bust open because she tasted blood, but she didn't let that discourage her. She was like liquid, moving from one spot to the next, a dancing martial art that no one else had seen before and it was harder to gauge what her next movement was going to be, but she suddenly changed, after she leaned back to avoid Peter's reach. Her foot slid back into a guarding stance and she defended Peter's blows, their hands like a flurry of movements, until she backfisted Peter, busting his nose open. He went at her harder, she redirected his body and let gravity take him to the ground, she slipped in fast, getting him in a chokehold that looked awkward and difficult, but Peter didn't know what it was or how to defend against it. Instead of tapping out, he let himself pass out. Bella released Peter and got to her feet, wiping her face a little to wipe away the blood from her lip, but she waited to see what was next.
Four looked at the palm pilot in his hand. He pulled Bella's file up and glanced over it while the other two groups duked it out.
Bella Prior, 18. Parents: Natalie and Andrew Prior. Siblings: Beatrice Prior, Caleb Prior. Aptitude results: Dauntless.
Four nodded, it wasn't odd for those that scored Dauntless, to excel at it, but Bella was skilled, like she had previous training before. He glanced over Tris's file and it was clear she scored Abnegation, so he was curious why she was here. When the other two fights ended, he looked at his watch on his wrist and before he could have them fight again, the other guy walked over. He sighed. "Eric, we're not done."
"I don't give a fuck." Eric said, his tone clipped. "Place your recruits on the board, I want to see how the transfers do against the Dauntless born."
Four sighed and then he hit some buttons on his palm pilot and the board updated. Bella was tenth. Most of the Dauntless born were already in the lead, which would be normal. What wasn't normal, was Bella's name in the top ten.
Eric raised a brow at the board and his steel eyes found Bella. "Alright, you're surprising. Come with me."
"Eric-"
"What, she's clearly who you think is your top recruit." Eric said, his tone was snarky, quipped and aggravated.
Four sighed and nodded, watching Bella follow Eric over towards where Dauntless born were gathered.
"Everyone, this is Bella, she's number ten on the board. Want to know why that's a problem?" Eric asked and everyone was quiet. "Because she's a stiff. That's why. You're letting a stiff, outdo you. You're all fucking pathetic." He said and then he nodded to one boy, his hair was shorter, a light brown color and his eyes were a mix of blue and green. His face was strong, and it was clear that he was strong as well. "Lukas." He called. "You're number one on the board. You have one minute to knock the stiff out or you are losing your top spot." Eric said and then pushed Bella forward.
Lukas's eyes raked over Bella, studying her. Bella went into a simple stance, her hands tucked behind her back now, it was a bold move, to fight without a typical fighting stance, but it was unpredictable too. Lukas whirled around, a twisting motion and he did a flashy kick, throwing it at Bella's head. He was fast and the movement was fast, but Bella's hands came up and blocked, her body shifting to the side to move the flow of the kick and then she struck him right under his armpit, hitting a pressure point and that caused him to stumble back. It was clear he was upset, confused and he was losing this match and he never lost. It was frustrating for him and so he tried to go at Bella harder and faster, but she was keeping up with him pretty decently, until he was able to slam a backfist into her face and she saw stars for a moment. She shook it off, knowing that she would likely have a black eye later for it, but she continued to spar against Lukas.
Eric watched how Bella moved, it was so fluid and with intention. She was mixing martial arts and he was curious how a stiff knew so much. Everyone was gathering now, including the other transfer recruits and Four. They watched as Lukas and Bella went head to head, nearly evenly matched.
Lukas was getting more and more frustrated until he finally broke through her guard just by using his strength and he busted her nose and cracked one of her ribs and that small window, the tiniest of windows, he had her. He went for a closing shot, his strength unwavering as he tried to get his arms around her and for a moment, she let him, but Lukas didn't realize what she was doing and he got caught in a guillotine headlock. He tried to pull out of it, but it was clear that she was clamped tight on his airway and he would pass out soon if he didn't do something. He dropped to the ground to try and break the standing guillotine, but she shifted with him. He tried to loosen her hold as he felt his body starting to panic from the lack of oxygen. He punched into her side hard, thinking that would somehow jar her, but she kept holding on tight. His consciousness wavered a little before he found himself blacked out.
Bella released her hold and she pushed away from Lukas, her breathing obviously labored. Her lip was busted, her eye was bruising, her side was bruising up too and she dislocated a couple knuckles when she punched Lukas in the face a few times. She got to her feet anyways and looked around the room. Her eyes landed on her sister, her shocked expression was clear, like she just witnessed a completely different person, not her sister, beat the shit out of a dauntless born recruit.
Eric made a hmph noise and then the board updated and Bella was number 8 now. "Alright. We're done here. Get some chow. Training is bright and early in the morning." He said and then he walked away. He pulled Bella up on his palm pilot like Four had done. Bella Prior was interesting, interesting enough to dig up information on, especially since she was clearly going to be the top recruit this year. It was unbelievable, a stiff being top of her class.
