Chapter 30
Heaven Is Waiting
June 6th
The tide receded, the waves pulling themselves back into the sea. It was calming to watch. Fay sat beside Jacob in the damp sand, backs against an old peace of drift wood. His arm was wrapped around her middle, holding her to his side. They were joined by the other imprints, all enjoying the evening sunset in silence.
The other members of the pack sat further down the beach discussing something Fay and the others couldn't quite hear. Embry and Seth were the only two absent pack members as they were running patrol. Or at least that's where everyone thought they were until the pair came rushing out of the woods. As soon as they were spotted leaving the trees everyone was on high alert. All shifters jumped to their feet and rushed forward to meet the pair.
"What's wrong?" Sam asked before anyone else could get any words out.
"The Cullen's stopped us near the boarder. They what a meeting with the pack." Embry said. He was a normally calm person but now looked on edge.
"Why?" Jacob asked.
"They said cold ones are coming, an army of them," Seth blurted out, visibly shaking, wether it was with excitement or fear no one could tell.
"What!" Sam practically barked. Embry hit Seth's arm.
"They said an army of their kind is coming after Bella and they need our help. They are not sure when it will be happen. They want to meet tonight, at the Fork's timber yard to discuss it." Embry explained.
"We are not dying to save her," Paul growled.
"No, we are not. But we will still go and see what they have to say. If there are more cold ones coming into the area, we need to be prepared and know what is going on." Sam reasoned. "We'll leave in an hour, you two get back on patrol until then. Paul, Quil, and Leah go with them." Sam turned back to his imprint; he held Emily's eyes for a moment. She stood with Kim, both holding each other's hands tightly. "Let's get you home." Sam said moving towards them, Jared following his move. As the other pack members ran off into the forest to patrol that only left Jacob and Fay standing in the sand.
"Do you want to watch the sunset a little longer?" Jacob asked offering a hand to Fay. She took the offer and the pair returned to their seat, neither one ready to talk about the issue ahead. They would take a few more moments of peace instead.
…
The rain had set in on dark. The forest floor was slick with mud as the pack trudged their way towards the timber yard. A sickening sweet smell radiated from the area and the closer the pack got the less at ease they were. Sam emerged from the forest first with Jared and Jacob at his sides. The others lingered back at the tree line.
The Cullen's were waiting in the open for them, along with Bella swan of course. She was the only human present and visibly shook from the cold rain. Even with many layers covering her and her boyfriend holding an umbrella over her head.
"They don't trust us enough to be in their human forms," Edward translates for the pack.
"They came. That's what matters," the blonde doctor vampire says nodding his head. He takes a few steps forward away from the others, Edward does the same after handing the umbrella to the small pixie like vampire. Fay doesn't miss it when Bella says hi to Jacob. Fay subsides a growl at the action, but Paul let's out an irritated growl on her behalf.
"Welcome. Thank you all for coming here I know it wasn't easy. I know our families don't see eye to eye on things, but I have asked you here today to discuss a common interest. The safety of our towns, it's people and Bella. There is an army coming, our kind. They want to kill Bella and there is no telling what else, or who else they may hurt while they are here." The pack mind went into overdrive as everyone's thoughts crashed into one another with this new information. "I know it's a lot to ask but would any of you be willing to fight alongside us against the army?"
Yes.
We have too.
Kill cold ones.
This is going to be fun.
Protect the tribe they could go there next.
Can we trust them.
This could be a trap.
The older vampire looks to Edward for a translation but he just shrugs.
"They are undecided, they need time to think on it," he says nodding to Sam.
"That's completely understandable. Jasper," the doctor jesters to the man to his left with shaggy blonde hair. "Has experience with newborns, he can tell you more about them."
Newborns?
What does he mean?
Babies?
What's he talking about?
"They want to know what newborns are, how the newborns differ from us," Edward says aloud what majority of the pack are wondering, Sam especially.
"Newborns are what we call new ones of our kind. They are a great deal stronger then us because their own human blood lingers in their tissues. Our kind is never more physically powerful then in our first several months of this life." He takes a step back and Jasper takes his place at the front of their group.
"Carlisle's right, that's why they are created. A newborn army doesn't need thousands like a human army. No human army could stand against them. Now the two most important things to remember are first, never let them get their arms around you they will crush you instantly. Second, never go for the obvious kill, they will be expecting that. And you will lose… Emmet!" Jasper spins around walking away from the group into a more open area. "Don't hold back," he tells the larger vampire who followed him. The pair are lined up several feet from each other.
"Not in my nature," the large vampire says before taking off full speed at Jasper. The pair fight for a moment but Jasper manages to easily pin Emmet to the ground.
"Never lose focus," Jasper smiles. The vampires take turns sparring with one another. The pack watch their movements and most find the show entertaining. Emmet and Quil start betting on who they think will win the fights before a quick growl from Sam pulls them back into line.
"One more thing. Never turn your back on your enemy," Jasper says. Edward had thought he won his round with Carlisle but the older vampire is up in a flash pinning Edward down to the ground.
The group spreads out as does the pack as tensions lower. Fay sits with Leah by the tree line watching as Jacob wonders over to stand by Bella. She knew he wouldn't be able to help himself. Even though he was angry at her he still couldn't stop thinking about Bella since they arrived.
What is he, her pet? Leah snarls as Bella pats Jacob on the head. Fay tries to hold her thoughts back. If Jacob could hear them then he was paying her no mind.
Time to leave. Sam announced. The pack moved into the forest without a second glance back at the cold ones.
Never turn your back on your enemy's. Kind of redundant when we are working with them don't you think? Paul wonders loudly.
Do you even know what redundant means? Leah snarks back.
He said not to do it, but we are doing it right now. Redundant. Paul thinks proudly.
He's close enough just let him have it. Jared says starting to run towards La Push.
I guess so. Leah replies.
Fay and Jacob, you are both on patrol until two, then Jared and me will take over. Sam informs the pack.
We are going to join them, right? Jacob asks running to catch up with the pack.
Everyone needs a day to think on things. We'll have a meeting before the bonfire tomorrow. Sam says.
What's there to think about? Jacob asks. If we don't join them then the tribe is at risk.
Tomorrow Jacob. Sam replied before phasing out. Within a minute everyone else in the pack phased out leaving only Jacob and Fay in wolf form.
You're with me on this one right? We have to fight with them.
If that's what the pack decides then yes, I'll fight them.
Any chance you would be willing to sit out? Fay was surprised when a wave of concern washed over her, it was Jacob's emotions she felt.
Not if everyone else is fighting, no chance on earth I'd miss it. Don't stress over it Jacob, everything will work out in the end.
Author notes***
I think 2024 might be the year this story is finished. I have around eight more chapters lined out, three of them are finished. I am just trying to iron out the kinks at this point to be sure it all makes sense at the end. I am aiming for 40 chapters all up. This chapter was a filler but hopefully the next one can be more event full.
I will post the next chapter as soon as there is a review to this one.
