A/N: Natza is my number-one ship in Fairy Tail. I don't really care that Jerza has become canon now. But Natza will always be my OTP. I paired these two when I first came across the anime. To me, they looked really good together. But unfortunately, Mashima wanted to do his own agenda. Its fine, really. He just likes drawing sexy women and handsome men together. Erza and Jellal are examples of sexy and handsome. But I chose Natza because of their dynamic and their chemistry. Not because they were handsome or sexy looking. Other people, especially, NaLu and Jerza fans would say that Erza and Natsu are siblings. That is the stupidest excuse I've ever heard of. Natsu and Erza are not even blood-related. They could very well pursue a romantic relationship. And I think Mashima wanted to go that route but changed his mind in the end.
Anyway, I don't own Fairy Tail and it's characters. Enjoy
Everyone thinks Natsu likes Lucy a lot. Like, romantically speaking. But they were far from the truth. Natsu never held any romantic feelings for his blonde best friend. He did get confessed to her but he politely rejected her saying that he wasn't in the same boat as her. Much to his relief, she understood him and hoped to stay best friends. He was surprised to see her and Gray together after a year or so.
(Juvia: GRAY-SAMAAAAAaaaa~)
Poor Juvia. I bet her heart got broken at least three times.
"Ten times," Juvia says.
That's...oddly specific. How do you know that?
Anyway, we're going off-topic. Where was I now? Ah yes. Natsu and his feelings.
Natsu had always been in love with Erza ever since they began to hang out when they met the first time. People may think he was too dumb to think of romance but they were wrong. Natsu was very much caught up in many aspects of their daily life. He just never showed it because he saw no point in it.
Over the years, his love for her grew stronger. After Lisanna's death, he swore to himself that he would never let another family member of his die. So he trained thrice as hard as before. Sometimes with Erza and Gray and most of the time, by his lonesome. He picked many new things with his magic as he trained by himself. He grew so strong to the point of landing three perfect hits on Gildarts. He said that Natsu managed to scratch him and that he was proud of him.
Currently, he sat at the bar drinking a milkshake as he continues to think about Erza, who was currently on a solo mission according to Mira. He loves her, yeah, but the only thing that bugs him is that she is in love with somebody else.
That somebody being Jellal Fernandez. Now he doesn't know much about their history together but he could clearly see Erza's face beam in happiness every time Jellal enters her vision. Even more surprising, is the way Erza acts around him. She is not the Erza he knew and admires. She becomes a different person around Jellal. She almost acts like a shy and nervous girl, which totally contrasts with her authoritative and scary demeanor. The fact that Erza never shows him or even Gray her true personality made Natsu jealous of Jellal. Why couldn't she be like that around him? He wouldn't mind her being a little girly. Heck, even the others wouldn't mind it if Erza was a little timid. They'd still love her like they have been loving her all along. But why did she hide it from them?
Natsu could only guess that she didn't want others to know. And every day it becomes more and more apparent that Erza and Jellal have a thing for each other and might be on the verge of dating. Natsu tried so many times to tell Erza that he loves her but she would always excuse herself. He obviously knew that it was to spend time with Jellal.
And as the days go by, he noticed that his time spent with Erza became less and less. And he fears it might be what he thinks it is. But he wanted to hold onto some hope that maybe it might not be.
Until one day, when Erza came into the guild. Holding hands with Jellal. Right then and there, she announced her relationship with him to the guild. And that was the day Natsu was no longer the same person. While on the outside, he was the Natsu everyone adored, he wasn't that Natsu on the inside. Inside, was a man whose heart had been shattered at least several times or so. He doesn't want to blame Erza for this, no way. He blames himself for not acting on his feelings sooner. Maybe he would've gotten a chance. Maybe he would've at least been politely rejected by Erza and they would continue to be the brother-sister duo they were. That would be the highest form of closure he could get.
But it was already too late. He had no chance, whatsoever. His heart ached every time he saw Erza being all lovey-dovey with her boyfriend. And it grew to a point that he couldn't handle it anymore.
'I should just move on. No point in dwelling on useless feelings now.' Natsu thought as he finished his milkshake. He got up and made his way to the guild.
"Hey, Natsu? Where are you going?"
"Oh, just for a walk. I'll be back soon." Natsu said. Mira smiled and returned to her barmaid duties.
But Natsu lied to her. He might not come back again. He wanted to stay away from seeing Erza and Jellal together every day. The more he saw them at the guild acting like a real couple, the more his heart broke. He didn't want to feel like that. So he decided to stay as far away as possible.
"We are grateful for your help, Titania." A man spoke with Erza as he handed her the reward money for completing the quest.
"It's no problem. I'm glad the problem's been solved. Now everyone can peacefully sleep without having to worry about any creature coming and attacking them in the night time." Erza replied before skipping all the way to the train station.
She was extremely giddy and excited. Because she finally got to be with the man she loves. After countless times of trying to convince Jellal to think about pursuing a relationship, he finally asked her out. They have been dating for a couple of months now and have been steady so far. She is already thinking of the many things she would like to do with her boyfriend. She came up with a bucket list of things to do while traveling back to Magnolia. Once she arrived she greeted Mira and ordered a strawberry cheesecake. While eating, she noticed that one person was not among the guild members. Unexpectedly, it was Natsu.
"Hey, Mira. Have you seen Natsu anywhere? Usually, he would be here brawling or doing something God knows what." Erza asked curiously.
"Oh. He said he went out for a walk. He'll come back soon."
"Oh. Okay," Erza replied before going back to finishing her favorite dessert.
As soon as Natsu came to her mind, she couldn't help but think back on the time they spent together in the recent days when Jellal was released from prison. All she could think of was her time with Jellal and what they did away from the guild. She then came to a realization.
'I've been spending so much time with Jellal that I completely forgot about Natsu and Gray! I'm so stupid. Why didn't I think of them? They probably don't like me by now. But I have to fix this. I'll take them on an S-Class mission tomorrow. That would be my apology to them.' Erza thought as she quickly finished her dessert and made a beeline to Natsu's house.
"Goodnight, Mira. See you tomorrow." Erza said before leaving the guild.
"Goodnight." Mira replied.
On the way, Erza remembered the times when she used to tutor Natsu on basic things such as reading, writing, and other stuff. She smiled as she pictured Natsu's smile that would make anyone smile along with him. Her stomach fluttered as she imagined his goofy grin on his good-looking face. She really had been neglecting her closest friends for a while. She only hopes she can make it up to him. And Gray as well.
"Natsu!" Erza yelled as she knocked on the Natsu's door for the tenth time. She was irritated and angry now.
"I come all the way to his house and he doesn't even answer?! I should teach him some manners" Erza said before kicking down the door. She entered the house and found it to be empty.
"Natsu! Where are you?" Erza yelled again but still got no response.
She angrily stomped on the ground as she grew tired the more she didn't get any answer. Not knowing that the occupant she was looking for was somewhere else.
"Urgh, I'm tired. I'll just talk to him tomorrow morning." Erza was about to leave but something caught her eye. She went over to Natsu's bed and was surprised to find his scarf and a note in his handwriting.
Reading the note, she widened her eyes in shock and confusion as she immediately took the scarf and ran as fast as she could to the station, where he might be now.
As the note fell to the ground, the contents on the note were this:
To anyone who may find this letter. I'm leaving Fiore for a while and I don't know if I may even come back. The reason for this is personal and I hope you understand. Please do not worry about me as I can take care of myself. Live your lives happily guys.
Your's truly, Natsu Dragneel.
"NATSU!" Erza shouted as she spotted him sitting on a bench in the train station. By now, nearly everyone left so it was only the two of them and a few other people.
"Oh. Hey Erza." Natsu dejectedly spoke.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Erza demanded to know.
"It's exactly what it means. I'm leaving the guild."
"Why?!"
"..."
"Answer me!"
*CHOOO-CHOOOOOO*
The sound of the train honking could be heard as it arrived at the station. Natsu got up and was just about to board the last train for the night. But Erza quickly stopped him by grabbing his arm.
"You still didn't answer me. If it was because I neglected you and Gray, then what you are doing is totally stupid. Come back. We'll all go on an S-Class mission together tomorrow. Just like old times." Erza said. Though she couldn't help but notice the dead look in Natsu's eyes. He was a cheerful, boisterous, hyper-active teen who would start a brawl at any opportunity he gets. Now he wasn't that Natsu. The man she was at looking was someone else.
"No, this is not about you neglecting me and Gray. This is something else. But you don't have to worry about me anymore. Just let me go"
"No!" Erza firmly held her grip on his arm. "Not until I hear why you want to leave."
"Just let it go, Erza. It's none of your concern."
"It is my concern. Anything related to you is my concern. So just tell me already."
"I can't"
"Why? What's so hard to tell?"
"Like I said, its none of your concern." Natsu was slowly starting to get irritated.
"Shut up. I don't want to hear that. Just tell me" Erza pulled on his arm towards her.
"Let go."
"No!"
"I said let go!"
"Never!"
Natsu had enough.
"I SAID LET GOOOOO!" Natsu shouted and pushed her back. Erza was caught off guard and stumbled to the ground. She fell on her butt but she couldn't help the shock on her face when she saw Natsu angrily shout at her. Just what happened to Natsu?
"You wanna hear the answer? Fine I'll tell you. The truth is that I'm in love with you." Natsu revealed. Erza widened her eyes in surprise.
"I've been in love with you ever since we met. I only realized it after getting to know you better. I wanted to confess to you. I wanted to so badly. But I was too late. You were already dating Jellal. That told me that I didn't have a chance with you at all. But then it hurts me to see you and Jellal. Seeing you two every day being a couple in front of me was so painful. I couldn't handle that pain. I didn't wanna feel that pain anymore. So I'm leaving for both our sakes. I can forget about my feelings for you. I can forget everything about you and I can move on. You can be happy with the man you love and you don't have to worry about me anymore. You have someone you can be yourself around. So just let me go." Natsu breathed out a long exhale as he yelled all of that to Erza who was shocked to the core.
"I-I...I didn't...know" Erza said, not knowing what to say actually.
"Of course, you wouldn't. Your eyes were on Jellal since day one. At the tower, I thought you cut all ties with him. I thought you could finally be happy and not cry anymore. But then once Jellal is resurrected, you wanna forgive him and give him another chance even when he was the one who killed your closest friend, Simon. Don't give me all the manipulation excuse bullshit because it doesn't change the fact the Jellal killed Simon. It wasn't Ultear but Jellal. I don't much about your history but even I wouldn't forgive anybody who hurt my family.
And then there is you. Whenever you are at the guild, you put up a facade just to hide your trauma and sorrow instead of sharing it with us. Then when you are around Jellal, you act like a nervous girl. I could never break that ice around your heart, but Jellal somehow managed to."
Erza had nothing to say. She was so shocked that she was left speechless. Natsu was struggling with this ever since Jellal came back to life? She should've noticed sooner.
"W-We...We can still w-work something out" Erza said but she was unsure of herself.
"It won't work. You can't help me. But I'm helping you and myself by doing this."
"Wait Natsu. Don't leave me like this." Erza said as she stood up and walked towards him.
"I am going to. And from here on out, we're no longer friends."
Those words did something in Erza's heart as she froze in her place.
"I'm no longer your little brother anymore. We're not a team anymore. Forget everything we did as kids. Everything. It doesn't matter anymore. All the training that I did just so you could notice me was pointless. Forget me Erza. Focus on Jellal now. Make some memories with him, cherish them. Maybe you guys can get married in the future. Treat your kids well. Don't even think about me. And don't even think about following me or looking for me." Natsu said as he boarded the train. The train honked and began to leave.
Erza could only stare at the train as it went away to some unknown place. It took her several minutes to notice the tears that flowed down her face.
"H-Huh? W-Why am I c-c-crying? *sniffle*"
Erza knelt down on the ground trying to control her tears.
'W-what just happened? Why did I feel so heartbroken?' The more Erza questioned, the more tears dripped down to the ground from her face.
It happened. Natsu just left her for real. And he wasn't coming back. The very thought of him not coming back made her heart break even more. Without any more restraint, Erza cried out loud as the weight of what happened fell on her.
She cried for hours on end as she knelt down on the ground at the spot where Natsu left her.
"Forget me.
Forget everything we did as kids.
Don't even think about me.
We're no longer friends.
We're no longer a team anymore"
Those words kept repeating on a loop in her head as she continued to cry her heart out in the night.
"N-Natsu...*sniffle*...Please...come back. *sniffle* Come back to me..." Erza tried to think that he would definitely come back. But it was no use. Natsu said that he may never come back. And she blamed herself for this.
A/N: I wanted to try angst in a story. How did I do? Did I make you cry?
Anyway, I hope you enjoy. Wanna see a part 2 of this?
Dragon out.
