Hi Readers: I hope you guys liked the start to this new story I've decided to write for you, one which I believe will be different than any other story I've written which leads to Matt and Gabby having a family. Now, how about we make sure that's the case?
Chapter Two
Baby or Bust
Gaffney Medical Center – There were mixed emotions as Mr. and Ms. Casey sat in the treatment room they were assigned, as they held each other close with their fingers intertwined with neither the husband nor his wife being able to speak; being able to come up with the words to start an adequate conversation that could describe how they were both feeling at the moment: they had mixed emotions. On one hand, they both knew that a positive (IUP) result would mean that they were on the road to starting a family with each other the way Gabby always wanted…with her being pregnant with their child. On the other hand, they both knew that a negative (not an IUP) would mean that they would just be heartbroken all over again and in the same state that they were when they lost their first baby. However, Matt was determined that wouldn't happen, which is why he asked that another doctor be assigned to them, rather than the doctor they were originally assigned: Dr. William Halstead. The man who was just bad news for them.
After all, he was the man who did the procedure on Gabby when they lost their first baby; the procedure that led to the creation of an aneurysm, and the situation that they now find themselves in. A situation where they can lose each other forever if something goes wrong. However, Matt wasn't ready to risk that; risk the idea that they were going to lose each other. Nor did he want Gabby to feel like she was walking on eggshells around him. At the end of the day, he loves her more than anything and he wants to be there for her; both on an emotional level as he's the father of this child, and as a way to stay true to the vows he made to her: to love her in sickness and in health. And while this wasn't a sickness, it was a life-threatening medical condition which they needed to worry about. And that's why Matt needs to let his wife know that he's here for her, just like she asked him to be when they were at the firehouse. And yes, he already told her that he would be there for her there; he just wanted to reinforce it here as he knew how she felt.
She was emotional and scared, as he could just see how detached from reality she was at the moment; how she was trying to stay positive and just not think about what was going on when she was so scared. So, he decided to get her attention in a way that would make her happy: he got up and placed his hand on top of her head, prior to pressing his lips to her forehead. And let's just say that it had the desired effect: it got Gabby's attention due to the fact that it was so romantic. "Sorry, did you so something baby?" Matt shook his head. "Not yet." He said, as he grabbed her hand once more and intertwined their fingers as he sat down. "I just wanted to talk to you quickly and make sure that you know I'm here for you." Gabby agreed with her husband. "I know you are. I can see you here." Matt shook his head, as that wasn't what he meant. "No Gabby, I mean for everything. I can see how scared you are, and I haven't seen you in this much fear before. I mean, you were in a building that collapsed a year ago and you weren't scared."
Gabby agreed with her husband. "Pure adrenaline." Matt smiled when Gabby said that. "But today, you're not the same Gabby. I can see it in your eyes Gabby, I can see the fear that comes with this…and I just can't imagine with you're thinking right now." Gabby agreed with her husband. "And I can't imagine how hard this is for you, which is why I need to apologize baby. I still remember how things went down a few months ago, and I can't imagine what it feels like to know I said those things to you; only to be pregnant with my…our child. The man who said those horrible things to you, is also the father of your child; the man who said that you can't have a baby, is also the man who got you pregnant with this baby." Gabby agreed with Matt as he told her that, as that was true. But, like she said at the firehouse, she can forgive him. "Matt, take a breath and look at me; okay?" Matt agreed as he decided to get closer to Gabby. "Matt, I know you're scared right now. I know you were scared when you told me those things." Matt sighed.
After all, that was no excuse for how he treated her. "Gabby, please don't excuse me that easily. I said horrible things to you. Horrible things that you have to know I regret and wish I could take back every day, especially the part where I told you that you can't have your own baby." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that, well aware that was the case. "Matt, I know that; I've always known that. Yes, it was hard to hear at first. But, I've come to realize that it was your fear talking to me, not you…the man I love." Matt agreed with Gabby, as it was his fear. "Gabby, I know we have a lot to talk about. I just needed to say I'm sorry again, because I don't want that to overshadow whatever happens. Gabby, if you are pregnant…I want to celebrate with you. But, if it's bad news…not that I want it to be bad news…I want you to still lean on me. Gabby, I want to be in a good place so that you can feel comfortable leaning on me regardless of what happens today." Gabby agreed with her husband, as she felt the same way as he did. She wants to be in a good place.
And that's precisely what they are, and always will be just as long as they talk. "Right now, you being here is making me happy and is making me feel like we've made progress. Am I saying that we've fixed everything? Of course, we haven't; we can't fix everything by just having a baby with each other. But, I think we can talk." Matt agreed with Gabby. "Don't just think that we can talk, we need to talk; because as much as some of those things hurt you, some of those statements I made are still true. And we do need to talk about them. We need to talk about you making decisions on your own, you not talking to me when you have problems, other things that have been bothering me for a while. And I need you to promise me that you're not going to run away when things get hard." Gabby took a breath, as she now realizes (in hindsight) that's precisely what she did. "Yeah, I did that…didn't I." Matt agreed with his wife, as she did. "Gabby, I love you more than anything. It's why we're married. We're married because I love you." Gabby smiled.
After all, she loves him too. "And I want to work things out with each other. I want to figure out a way forward, regardless of whether that includes us having a baby together or not. That is, if you want to stay. I know you have a job in Puerto Rico, and you like it there. But, can you at least promise me that you stay for a couple days regardless of what happens so that we can talk? I hate how we left things, and I want to at least have a good time with you if this is the end." Gabby smiled as her husband told her that. "I love the sound of that. But, I may be moving home if you keep sweet talking me like that." Matt smiled as he agreed with Gabby, prior to getting up and leaning over her; placing his hand on her neck, he proceeded to kiss her softly and just took things nice and slow with her until they were disturbed by a doctor. More specifically, Dr. Natalie Manning. "Oh, my apologies." Pulling away, Matt smiled as he looked at Natalie. "Sorry Natalie." Natalie shook her head. "It's fine. You guys look adorable anyways." Matt smiled as he sat back down.
After all, he loves it when people call them adorable. "Just me, being madly in love with my wife." Natalie agreed as she walked in carrying Gabby's chart. "Well, I was briefed by Will when he tagged me in. Said something about you needing to do a scan so that you can check something?" Turning her head, Gabby looked at her husband as she grabbed his hand. "Do you want to tell her? You know her, and I know that you want to tell her much more than I do." Matt sighed, as he does. "Yeah, is that okay?" Gabby nodded, as she knew that it was the right thing to do. They needed to let their medical team know everything if this was going to go well. "You may want to sit down Natalie, as I need to give you some background before we figure things out." Natalie got concerned, but decided to follow her friend's instructions as that's precisely what she needs as Gabby's doctor; she needs background so that she can treat her patient properly. And that's precisely what Matt proceeded to tell Natalie. "We think we're pregnant."
The doctor was pleasantly surprised when Matt told her that he and Gabby thought that they were pregnant with their first child, as she knows how much Matt has always wanted to be a father, which is why she was more than ready to get up and go hug him so that she could congratulate him over the news. "God, I am so happy for you guys. I know this is your dream come true Matt and…" Taking a breath, Gabby sighed as she went to calm the doctor down. "Ok, Natalie. Calm down and take a breath as there's more you need to know." Natalie was confused when she heard Gabby say that, before sitting down as she listened to her patient. "Ok. I'm lost. Isn't it a good thing that you're pregnant?" Matt agreed, as it is a good thing. "Yes, because it's a dream come true. However, there's a reason why we're here. Well, two reasons actually." Natalie agreed with Matt, while he turned to look at his wife. "You want to tell her, or should I?" Gabby sighed. "Natalie, do you remember at all that I was pregnant in the past?" Natalie agreed with Gabby.
After all, she's a former paramedic and they're a family here at the hospital; they know a lot about what happens with the paramedics, especially when they come here to get treated. "Yeah, I remember briefly. You came here in a rush a couple years ago." Gabby sighed, as that was true. "Yeah, that's actually related. The last time me and Matt were pregnant, the baby was an abdominal pregnancy." Natalie nodded as she went to look in her charts. "So, we wanted to be cautious before we really celebrated and wanted to make sure that it was true. That it was a baby that we can celebrate." Natalie agreed with Gabby, as that made sense; she just didn't know how this related to her wanting to switch her in for Will. "Ok. I get that, because it makes sense. But, I can't help but think that this has something to do with the reason why you wanted me instead of Will." Gabby agreed, as it was. "Matt, can you…" Matt nodded. "Hey, of course. Just take a breath and I'll explain." Gabby agreed with her husband, grateful that he was here with her.
Especially now, as she's come to realize that she truly couldn't have done this without him. "So glad you're here, as I truly can't do this without you." Matt agreed with his wife, well aware that was the case. "I know, so just take a breath and let me talk to Natalie." Gabby agreed with her husband, letting him do just that. "Well, here's the situation. When Gabby had her miscarriage, or whatever it was…there were complications, which led to an aneurysm being created on her right iliac artery." Natalie just looked at Gabby when Matt said that, as she already knew that wasn't good. "God, I am so sorry Gabby." Gabby agreed with Natalie, while Matt continued. "And we went to a specialist earlier this year, who told us that it could be fatal for Gabby if it burst while she was pregnant." And that was when Natalie's heart just dropped, as she knew that this had to be hard for the both of them. "God, how are you guys okay? This has to be hard." Gabby sighed as she turned to look at her husband, having a feeling this was harder on him than her.
Harder due to the fact that he could lose both her and their baby. "Yeah, it's hard. Just the idea of me loosing Gabby because she died while pregnant with our child, a child that we created together is not a situation that I like to think about; especially since it makes me think of the worst outcome…which is me killing my wife." Looking at her husband as he said that, Gabby was shocked as she never knew that was how Matt felt. "Matt, do you really feel that way? That you would be responsible for killing me if something went wrong?" Matt sighed as he looked at his wife, as that's precisely how he would feel. "We can talk about it later. But, yes." Gabby nodded as she held Matt a bit closer, while also intertwining their fingers to give him the comfort her clearly needs from her right now. God, here she was thinking that he was going to be comforting her through this process; but instead, she was the one comforting him. Not that she wasn't okay with that, as that's her job as his wife: to comfort him and help him through this hard situation.
But first, they need to figure something out: whether she's truly pregnant. "So, that's why we're here shortly after Gabby told me that she tested positive for a pregnancy. We need to know the truth. Whether it's a false alarm and we can worry about other things, like trying to figure out a way to have a baby safely; or whether it's true and we need to worry about her life and how we can make sure that she's safe during the pregnancy, with the hopes that she can survive and raise the baby with me." Natalie agreed with Matt as he said that, before turning to look at Gabby. "I can see that you're a bit stunned right now, do you need a minute?" Gabby took a breath, prior to looking at her husband. "Are you okay if we just concentrate on finding out our situation right now, then we can talk at home?" Matt agreed with Gabby, as he's more than ready to do just that: find out their situation, then talk about what he just said at home. "I think that's the perfect way forward. We can wait until we're home to talk. I promise." Gabby agreed with Matt.
After which, he looked at Natalie once more. "Natalie, can you get things ready for us to find out?" Natalie agreed as she got up. "You guys will have a minute to talk if you want, I need to get a machine." Matt agreed with Natalie. "Thanks Nat. Can you also get us some information about your specialist OB/GYNs? I mean, if you have any here? Ones that deal with high-risk pregnancies?" Natalie agreed, as that's something she can certainly get them. "Hey, of course, I can get that for you Matt. Just let me get the machine and that, then we can figure out whether you're going to be parents." Natalie said as she went to walk out of their room to get an ultrasound machine. Meanwhile, Gabby turned to look at Matt and just took a breath. "Looks like we really do need to talk." Matt agreed with his wife. "Gabby, I'm sorry that you had to learn that way. I wanted to tell you, and I wanted to really let you know how I feel. But it's a morbid conversation that I can barely wrap my head around. But…" Gabby just looked at her husband and took a breath.
After all, she could see that he was hurting. "Gabby, I want you to know that this doesn't mean that I won't support you. I love you, I want to be your husband forever, and I want a family with you. But, we just need to figure things out and talk. And I promise to talk to you about how I feel." Gabby agreed with her husband, as she's glad he plans on doing just that. "I'm glad Matt. And I'm sorry we didn't have this conversation sooner." Matt agreed as he got up, prior to leaning over the woman he loves and pressing his lips to her forehead once more; only to stare down into her eyes prior to kissing the woman of his dreams softly. "I love you Gabby, and that's all that matters at the end of the day. I promise." Placing her hand on Matt's face, Gabby agreed with him as that truly is all that matters at the end of the day. "I couldn't agree more." Matt smiled. "I promise, we can still celebrate you coming home and being pregnant if it's true. This is good news, I promise." Gabby agreed with her husband, ready to take him at his word when he says that.
It was precisely how she remembered the gel, cold. That's how this gel made her feel when she was getting an ultrasound. And while she did get one in Puerto Rico to check once, she just wanted to do it with Matt so that he could see that there was a baby in there; she just never expected it to also come with a confession which he made to her. A confession that she couldn't get out of her head. "The worst outcome is me killing my wife because she's pregnant." And while that wasn't the exact quote (as she was paraphrasing in her head), it was the gist of it. It was the reality and what she had to think about right now. How her husband had to be feeling when it came to them finding out whether she was pregnant. "Ok. So, let's check this out and see whether you guys are having a baby." Hearing Natalie say that, Gabby looked at the screen and concentrated for once; concentrated on learning the reality. "Ok. Now, remember that you can't see much other than a pregnancy in there." Gabby agreed, well aware that was true.
After all, it was still early in her pregnancy. "Ah, there we go. A little baby." Gabby then went to ask the serious question. "Is it…is it viable? Am I really pregnancy?" Going to check where the baby was, Natalie nodded as she turned to look at Gabby. "Yes, you're pregnant. The pregnancy is IUP…and I'd have to say based on the measurements, that you're about seven weeks along. I can only imagine that this is really good news for you guys, as you guys have always wanted to be parents. So, congratulations guys." Letting out a smile, Gabby couldn't help but feel a bit happy over the fact that there was a little baby in there. A baby that was part her and part Matt, something she's always wanted; while, at the same time, she was also scared because of what could easily happy to her. This could be the end of her and Matt's love story together, as she could easily never get a chance to raise their child together, which is why Matt knew that they needed to talk, and he needed to listen to what Natalie was saying as it was clear that Gabby wasn't.
"Well, Dr. Asher is going to call you guys for an appointment in a few days, and I've asked Dr. Charles to join your case. There will be other doctors eventually, but I promise that we're going to have the best doctors." Matt agreed with Natalie. "Any recommendations for how we can treat things right now? Maybe how we can make sure that everything stays okay? How we can ensure that Gabby stays safe in the early days, before we see the specialist?" Natalie agreed. "Just take it easy and relax, concentrate on each other, and remember to breathe. And maybe don't stress out about it too much, as you want to celebrate the fact that you're pregnant. I promise, you guys will love it." Matt agreed with Natalie as he turned to look at Gabby. "I can only imagine that's going to be the case." He said, as he got up and went to hug her. "Thanks for your help Natalie." Natalie agreed as she went to hug her long-time friend, who she was extremely happy for due to the fact that she knew how much he's always wanted to be a father.
And now, that's precisely what he's going to be. "It's no problem Matt. And you can always come for check-ups when you're worried. I'll talk to Goodwin and explain your situation. I'm sure she'll be fine with me giving you those check-ups when you need them." Matt agreed with his friend. "Thanks Natalie." Natalie smiled and agreed as she walked away to give them a moment. Meanwhile, Matt walked back over to his wife and then sat down on the edge of the bed; after all, Gabby was clearly in shock and scared. So scared, that she's barely said anything since they got the news. So, Matt grabbed her hand and intertwined their fingers with the hopes of him getting his wife to speak to him. "Hey, Gabby." Turning her head when she heard Matt's voice, Gabby took a breath as she looked into his eyes. Meanwhile, Matt got close to her and smiled. "It's ok. I promise. We're together, and we'll figure this out." Gabby agreed with Matt. "Are you mad?" Matt was shocked, as that was the last thing he thought he'd hear Gabby ask him.
After all, he could never be mad at her over this. "Hey, I'm not mad; I could never be mad at you for being pregnant. We're going to have a family, because we're going to figure this out together. Gabby, I know we need to talk; but I need you to know that I'm here for you and that you can lean on me right now. You're going to be scared, and you're going to need me with you for a but. I promise, I'm here for you." Gabby agreed with Matt. After all, that was precisely what she wanted to hear. That he was here for her, and that he was going to take care of her. So, she wrapped her arms around him and just held him close. After which, Matt wrapped his arms around her too; while also pressing his lips to her shoulder to make sure that his wife felt safe right now. "I got you Gabby, I promise." Gabby agreed with her husband, well aware that was the case. After which, she leaned back and just took a breath while staring into his eyes. "Matt?" Matt nodded as he heard Gabby speak to him. "Yeah, baby?" Gabby took a breath, prior to asking him her question.
The question which has been on her mind ever since he said what he just said, about him being responsible for killing her due to the fact that he got her pregnant. "Can we talk about what you told me when we get home?" Matt agreed with Gabby, as they most certainly can talk about what he told her. "Hey, of course, we can talk about that. We have a lot to talk about that for a while because I'm going to take some time off. I'll take time off so that we can get you settled at home, and so that we can figure things out. The last thing I want to do is just let you get settled on your own. I'm your husband, and I need to welcome you home properly; especially since we have a new place." Gabby was confused. "What are you talking about?" Matt sighed. "The building inspectors came by and found asbestos all over the building. So, the building can't be lived in. I just found a place quickly and moved there. It's like the old place, but newer. It even has a pool in it." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Not on the ground floor?" Matt shook his head.
After all, they needed to use an elevator. "By the way, still shocked you still had a key to put your things right in my truck." Gabby smiled as Matt said that, prior to placing her hand on his face and kissing him softly. "I love you Matt, and I promise that I'm here now. I'm not going to go anywhere because I want to have this baby with you." Matt agreed with his wife, as she most certainly isn't going anywhere when she's pregnant with their child. "You're pregnant with our child, so you better believe that you aren't going anywhere anytime soon." Gabby smiled as she agreed with Matt. "What do you want?" Matt smirked. "I want a son, then you can stop risking your life for me." Gabby agreed. "And so that you can make sure that you're the one that gets that name first." Matt was confused. "What are you talking about." Gabby smiled as she placed her hands on his face and leaned her forehead against his. "Andy." Matt smiled. "Ok. I have to admit, that crossed my mind too." Gabby agreed with Matt and smiled at the man of her dreams.
The man she loves more than anything in the entire world. "Let's get home, I want to talk about what you said to me. How you said that…" Matt agreed, as he already knew what she was talking about. "Yes, we'll talk about it. But first, we need to get you home." Gabby smiled. "Can't wait to see our new place."
