Chapter 1: Honey's Beginning

In the state of Illinois, there lived a couple named Trevor and Wanda Potts. They worked together on a bee farm making and selling honey. It didn't make them rich, but it kept them afloat. Then in the year 1977, during the month of April on the 12th, the couple was blessed with a baby girl.

She was healthy, pink, and had little tufts of blonde hair.

"She's so beautiful." said Wanda.

"Just perfect." Trevor added.

The little baby then opened her eyes, revealing them to be green.

"Any ideas for names?" asked a nurse.

"We're going to call her Honey. Because we both love honey and she's sweet and her little hair is honey colored." Wanda explained.

"A cute little name." replied the nurse.

1983

As the years went by, Honey grew from baby to toddler, and from toddler to kid. One day, they took her out to the bee farm.

"Here's where we get our honey from Honey." Trevor told her.

"Wow." replied Honey.

They all put on their bee keeping outfits, and went out to the hives. When Wanda opened one of the hives, some of the bees flew out. As they did, Honey got a little scared, and hid behind her mother.

"It's okay, Honey. Bees will only sting you if they feel threatened." Wanda informed.

Honey slowly got out from behind her, and walked closer towards the hive. And just like her mother told her, the bees didn't sting her. She even let a few bees land on her hand. Trevor then showed her how they collected honey from the hives, and then the process of cleaning and putting them in jars.

Trevor then took a jar of honey, and let his daughter taste it. Honey dipped her finger into the jar, and put it in her mouth.

"That's yummy, Daddy." Honey told him.

"That's the purity of honey, Honey."

Honey then began helping her parents more often on the bee farm. She learned all about bees, the history of honey, and even went with her dad to help deliver the jars to the stores. Honey had a pretty nice childhood even though her parents didn't have much money.

She was always pretty happy with what she had, but then that began to change. When she grew into a teenager she began noticing what nice things her peers had. Though she knew she had to be grateful for what she did have, being a teenager she couldn't help but wish she had what she didn't.

1992

One day, while she was at school she noticed how some of her classmates were showing off their new Walkmans. They were the latest in technology, and were a way to take your music on the go. Her 15th birthday was coming up soon, perhaps her parents could get it for her.

And as she walked through the hallway, she noticed how some girls were carrying brand new designer purses. Honey had a purse, it was an older purse that she got in the clearance section at the mall.

"Nice purse, Honey." teased one of the girls.

The other girls started laughing. Honey blushed in embarrassment. That settled it, she was going to ask her parents for a purse and a Walkman.

Later that afternoon, Honey went downstairs to speak to her parents. She found them in the living room, watching TV.

"Hey, Mom, Dad." she greeted.

"Hi sweetie." said Wanda.

"So have any ideas on what you want for your birthday yet?" asked Trevor.

"Well I was thinking about maybe...a Walkman and a purse?" Honey requested.

"A Walkman? Why do you want one of those?" Trevor wanted to know.

"Let me guess, that black purse you saw at Ralph's the other day?" Wanda inquired.

"To listen to music on the go, Dad. And yes that, Mom, and also my current one is a bit...out of style."

"Out of style?"

"Honey, I'm not sure we can afford to get you a Walkman. Even if we could don't you think it'll be a distraction? Like your Nintendo upstairs was when I bought you that." Trevor told his daughter.

"It won't Dad. Besides other kids at school have them."

"I'm just not sure. The ones at Ralph's were like a hundred dollars, I could buy two Nintendo games for that, which I'm not."

"I'll see about the purse, do you remember the price?" Wanda piped up.

"If I'm remembering correctly, it was about $30."

"Fine, you can have the purse, but the Walkman, no. I'm not spending that kind of money when you have a perfectly good stereo upstairs." Trevor said sternly.

"But Dad..."

"Trevor..." Wanda said to her husband.

"No buts young lady, we can't afford it with the way business is at the moment. If you want a Walkman, you're gonna have to pay for it out of your own money. There's a street fair at the mall in two weeks, you can make some money there. Why don't you make a little something at our stand, all the money you make is yours to keep. And if you earn enough money, I'll take you to buy a Walkman as a reward." Trevor answered.

"Fine maybe I will." Honey told him firmly.

Then Trevor left the living room.

"Don't mind your father dear, but he's not entirely wrong about our finances. How about I help you make a dish for our stand?" Wanda suggested.

"This is your chance to prove you have what it takes to run the business one day. Assuming you want to go into our business."

"I don't know about that Mom. But I will take your help." Honey told her.

"Great. We'll plan after dinner. Now why don't you go upstairs and just relax, watch some TV. Isn't Rescue Rangers on now or something?"

"Oh yes."

And Honey went back upstairs.

Sure enough, after dinner Honey and Wanda started work on the treats. Honey decided to keep things simple, and make some honey buns. The mother and daughter made the dough, kneaded it, and then shaped it into circles.

After popping them in the oven, they worked on the honey glaze.

"Hmm, you know I think these honey buns could use something a little extra." Honey thought.

"Like what?" asked Wanda.

"I'm gonna get creative."

Honey then got a bowl, and started to work. She put in a whole jar of honey, two cups on chocolate syrup, and one cup of peanut butter. She mixed it all together, and then tasted it.

"Mmm, this is pretty good." she said.

Then the oven beeped, and Wanda took out the honey buns.

"Well the buns just have to cool for a minute. Do you have your glaze ready?"

"Yep, taste this, Mom."

And she had her mom taste the mixture.

"Hmm, not bad." Honey smiled at that.

Two weeks later, Honey went with her parents to the street fair. She was a little nervous, what if no one liked her honey buns?

"Okay, Honey. Here's our stand, you can be right beside us." Trevor told her.

"Okay, Dad."

Soon, the two stands were ready. Trevor and Wanda's stand read "Potts' Honey Farm", and had jars of honey, honey comb, regular honey buns, and different honey items. Honey's stand read, "Honey's Honey Buns", and she had her special buns ready for sale.

People passed by the stands, and bought a couple of their items, but no one stopped by Honey's stand.

"Come on, someone has to try my honey buns." she hoped.

And then, a couple passed stopped at her stand.

"Hmm, what kind of glaze is this?" asked the man.

"It's a special glaze of my own." Honey explained.

"I say we give it a try." the woman told him.

And so they bought one to split. The second they bit into it, their faces broke into dreamy looks.

"This is so good." complimented the woman.

"We'll take two more."

Honey smiled, and happily gave them to them. And they in turn paid for them.

"Thank you, have a nice day." Honey told them, as they left.

Honey looked at money in her little metal box. It felt good making a couple dollars on her own. Soon more people began stopping by her and her parents stands. Honey looked at her parents and they smiled at her, and she smiled back.
