CHAPTER 118
Grace sat down with Viola, and together they hatched a plan: they were going to demoralize Elizabeth in the eyes of society. They called some reporters and released several slanderous articles.
Hamilton's high society was in an uproar, everywhere they went there were rumors against Elizabeth Thorton and her immorality.
Viola did a great job of spreading the word that Elizabeth tried to cross the line with her father, that she often insinuated herself or removed her clothes around her father to tempt him. She acted like a harlot and when her father tried to set limits, she set him up, causing Willian Thatcher to be demoralized in the eyes of society and his family, and even took his life. As well as being a whore, she was a murderer, who killed the father who had raised her with so much love and affection.
There wasn't a person in Hamilton who didn't comment on the Thatchers' ungrateful daughter. And this conversation began to spread to the four corners of canada, with enormous speed, and that's how Lee and Rose, on seeing the newspaper on the newsstand, found out and immediately sent a telegram to Bill.
Bill and Charlote were arriving in town, as she was going to spend some time with Tom before he left again. That family weekend was wonderful.
Ned ran out, waving a piece of paper and shouting for Bill. He said goodbye to his wife, because from the look on Ned's face, he could tell that something serious was in that telegram.
When he got to his office and read it... his mind wandered. Anger consumed him, his eyes blazed like fire, and marching with his boots on the ground, he went straight to the police station, where he found Jack, Wynn, Edward and Frank, all working as a family on the late paperwork, and smiled at the sight of his family... too bad he didn't have any good news.
Wynn, lifting his head from the papers, saw Bill's countenance and knew something was very wrong.
- Spit it out, Bill! Wynn stood up from his chair, drawing the attention of everyone in the room.
- We've got a problem and it could be a big one...
The three telegrams were passed from hand to hand and looks of surprise and anger were on everyone's faces.
- "Who could have slandered Elizabeth like that?"
In that room, it wasn't clear who was more hateful. No one could accept those accusations. About Elizabeth. Lee and Rose, as soon as they found out, decided to send the two urgent telegrams and the third was to Collins, warning him about Charles Spurlok.
With each passing day, the weight fell more heavily on everyone's shoulders, bringing more problems and serious ones...
