We were having the weekly facetime with Luke. "Look, I've gotta go soon. Saturday is Band night at the Student Union." Clyde pipes up from the back. "What? You're gonna watch a band? We are talking music, here? Electric guitars, drum...not some physics experiment with elastic, right?" I laughed. "Luke took me to see one last week. They're decent." I told him. "Yeah, but you'd be just as fascinated if it was an experiment, so I don't exactly trust you." Rani laughed at the bickering. "Clyde don't be soft. Soon Luke will have seen more cool bands than you've ever heard of." Rani leant around me to pinch him. Also, is it just me or did that sound mildly flirtatious? At least, coming from Rani. "Yeah! You'll be so after my tunes next time I'm home." Luke shot back. "Oh, Luke, I can't wait." Sarah Jane clasps her hands excitedly. There was a knock on his door, which temporarily distracted him. "Look, I've gotta go now. I'll catch you later." He quickly gets moving. "Love you!" Sarah Jane just about manages to get out before the video cuts. "Right, homework!" Clyde announced, heading to where the textbooks were all spread out on the little table near Mr. Smith. We managed to get through most of the work we needed to do before Clyde and Rani had to leave.
I went downstairs to say goodnight before getting ready for bed. "Luke'll be back soon. Clothes all over the place, empty mugs, dirty plates, loud music." Rani said. "Asha and Luke being all disgustingly in love." I huffed in exasperation. "I'm an affectionate person, Luke is my boyfriend, so yeah! I'm gonna be 'disgustingly in love' with him!" I shoot back. Sarah Jane laughed at my indignation. "You're right, I should make the most of the peace and quiet. Night-night." Sarah Jane said teasingly. "Night Sarah Jane, Asha." Rani said. "See you tomorrow." Clyde promised. They then slipped out of the door. Once they were gone, I turned to Sarah Jane. "You don't mind...right?" I asked, suddenly insecure after Clyde's comment. I know it was a joke, but still. It's her house and her son. I'm just lucky she's letting me live here with her. She gave me a hug. "Asha, I love you and Luke. And seeing you together makes me far happier than I could ever express. So no, I don't mind you and Luke being openly affectionate. As long as neither of you are uncomfortable, then I'm fine with it. Now, if neither of you were asexual, then we'd have a whole other conversation..." She laughed as I ran upstairs to avoid that particular discussion.
Once I was in bed, I rang Luke. "Hey, love. Sanjay's here too. Say hi, Sanjay!" Luke said, clearly putting his phone on speaker. "Asha! My favourite person! Please tell your boyfriend that the original trilogy is better than the prequels!" Sanjay yelled in place of a greeting. "Well, I feel like I need to remind you who you're talking to." He went quiet for a few seconds before remembering the last time we got into a Sar Wars themed discussion. Let's just say, it took nearly two hours, a lot of screaming, and the only reason we ended it was just because I needed to come home. It would appear Sanjay has yet to learn not to start this debate with either of us. I quickly divert the topic to the band that night. We continued talking as they walked back to their dorms. Eventually, Luke hung up, giving me strict instructions to go to sleep. I did as I was told, for once.
I was woken up by the doorbell ringing. I groaned as I got up. The clock on the bedside table read 5:34 am. Who would be here at 5:34 on a Sunday? I met Sarah Jane as we emerged from our rooms. We both exchanged bewildered looks as we went downstairs to check who was here. "Hello?" Sarah Jane called as she poked her head out the door. I couldn't see anything, so I froze when she gasped. "What?!" I heard her strangled gasp. "What is it?" I whispered. She either ignored me, or didn't hear me, as she took off running. I went to follow, but gasped when I looked down. It was a baby! Like, a real, actual, breathing baby! I gently picked the baby up as Sarah Jane made her way back. Sarah Jane and I looked at each other in bewilderment. I carried the child inside, while Sarah Jane picked up the carrier the kid had been in. "Did someone just...leave them? On a random stranger's doorstep?" I asked as I rocked the fussing child. She, at least I think the baby's a she, started crying. Sarah Jane and I jumped as the lightbulbs exploded. She calmed down very quickly afterwards. Sarah Jane and I didn't talk much for the next few hours. I did my best to keep her clam as we took her upstairs so Mr. Smith could scan her and hopefully tell us more about her. Predictably, he refused to emerge, especially after she blew up some more devices. Sarah Jane looked close to tears. "I think she's sensitive to electricity. She seems to calm down when there's less of it." I theorised, watching the kid closely as she settled down again. "Maybe. Are you okay watching her while I ask Clyde and Rani for help?" Sarah Jane asked. I nodded, sitting down on the sofa as I held her.
Half an hour later, Rani burst into the attic. "Sarah Jane! What's..." She trails off when she sees who Sarah Jane is holding. The baby had gotten a bit fussy, so Sarah Jane had started holding her. Plus, I'd been holding her for nearly two hours at that point. Sarah Jane shushed her, so Rani carried on quietly. "That baby doing in your arms?" The baby looked at Rani curiously. "Rani, please keep it down. She cries when there's too much noise, and when she cries...she blows up anything electrical." I said quietly. "Every light in the house blew." Sarah Jane was on the verge of tears. Hopefully, Rani and Clyde can help so she can get some sleep. I've already had three cups of coffee in the last two...three? I don't know, somewhere between there hours. I made myself a new mug when Sarah Jane took her. "The street, more like." Rani said. "Wow, powerful little thing, aren't you?" I muttered into my mug. "I got what you said in your message, but what do you want nappies for...?" Clyde trailed of as he came up the stairs. he was instantly distracted by the baby. "I sort of feel like that should explain everything, but actually, I'm even more confused." Clyde admitted as he moved closer to see her. "The doorbell went off this morning, at like... half five? Sometime around then. Anyways, we found her on the doorstep." I explained tiredly. "I was going to call the police, but I don't think they'll have much luck finding her parents. Not on this planet." Sarah Jane carried on. The baby then started crying, presumably because she wanted more direct attention. Sarah Jane's computer set up exploded next to us. I quickly took the child from Sarah Jane and started shushing her. "Luke was born a 13-year-old boy. Asha is 16. A teenager, I can handle, but a baby, an alien baby? I need help." She turned pleading eyes to Clyde and Rani. "Don't look at me!" Rani cried out. "Or me, obviously." Clyde said when Sarah Jane looked at him. I kept quiet, knowing that Sarah Jane knew I'd help, but as a teenager, my knowledge on babies is more limited than hers, which is apparently quiet a challenge. "Yeah, well, your mum's must know." Sarah Jane asked. "If I start asking mum questions on how to look after a baby, well she's going to totally freak!" Rani says. "I mean, why? it's not like she'd assume you're pregnant." I asked. Rani looked at me like I was the insane one, "Asha, I say this with all the love and respect in the world, my mum is not as innocent as you." I resent the implications, and still don't get what Rani's saying. "Besides, she's an alien, what do any of us know?" Rani redirected the conversation back to the child. Sarah Jane took her back from me, and she started making happy gurgling noises. I let her grab my finger, which pleased the young madam immensely. "What about Mr. Smith?" Clyde asked. "Ah yes, a supercomputer, making lots of noise, using lots of electricity, which our young guest seems highly sensitive to, is definitely going to come out when she's in the vicinity." I should probably rethink exactly how I just responded to a perfectly valid question, but I'm functioning on caffeine and spite alone at this exact second, so he'll have to excuse the sarcasm. Rani bit her lip. "Yeah, I mean, with most babies, all you have to worry about is poo and puke." She says. Sarah Jane finished her thought. "Yes, well this one doesn't blow bubbles, she blows things up!" I don't think the baby liked her tone of voice, because she screamed, blowing up the lights somewhere else in the attic. "I only know one way to shut up a baby!" Oh yeah, Clyde has little cousins.
I think I fell asleep on the sofa while Clyde was feeding her. I say that because I was shaken awake by Rani to go and get ready for the day. We, being Rani, Sarah Jane, and I, are taking the child-we really need to decide on what to call her-to the park, while Clyde stays behind and talks to Mr. Smith. I took five minutes before I was deemed acceptable to be seen in public by Rani. Sarah Jane handed Clyde her watch, giving him detailed instructions on what to do while we're gone. Just as we were about to split with Clyde in the driveway, Gita hurried over. Rani quickly handed the carrier to Sarah Jane when she spotted her mum. Sarah Jane slammed the cover down, shielding the baby from view. "There you are Rani!" This'll be interesting. Gita did a double take when she saw what Sarah Jane was holding. "Oh, is there something you've not been telling us, Sarah?"Rani instantly jumps in to defend Sarah Jane. "Mum, there is a simple explanation!" She starts as Gits lifts the flap and gasps. "Oh, you've started fostering, haven't you, my darling? How wonderful! I always thought you made such a perfect mum to Luke, and you now Asha." Sarah Jane looked genuinely touched when she said that. "Oh, thank you Gita." She spoke. "No wonder Luke couldn't get either of you on the phone. I bet she's a proper little handful, aren't you? Aren't you my..." She started cooing at her, but Sarah Jane shut the carrier again, probably trying to keep her from accidently upsetting her. "Yes, well it was all a bit sudden, really. Yes, I practically opened the door, and there she was, like she'd fallen out of the sky!" She joked uncomfortably. Gits perked up. "Oh, like that thing last night! What's her name?" Finally! Someone else...hang on, the what now? "Her name?" Clyde sounded like he was about to suggest something, knowing him, it would be ridiculous. "What thing last night?" Sarah Jane asked curiously, distracted by the same thing as me. "I heard it on the radio. A meteor landed in that wrecker's yard on Peel Road." Gita spills instantly, never one to keep things to herself. "Technically, it would be a meteorite." I couldn't help but blurt out. "Ah, so it is. She must have a name, Sarah?" Gita carries on, never one to be distracted when she wants to know something. Sarah Jane seemed to think for a second before choosing a name. "Sky." Aw, that's actually quite a pretty name. Gita seems to approve too. Clyde stammers out a joke about how she's called Sky because she must have fallen from it. "It's beautiful. Just like you." She coos at Sky again. The little miss does not seem to like it, as she starts screaming. Her screaming sets off the car alarms. Gita quickly heads back to her house, calling for Haresh to switch off the car.
"An alien baby turns up on your doorstep and a meteorite crashes on the same night? That's like, a galactic coincidence." Clyde remarks. Rani seems excited by this. "We should check it out." She says to Sarah Jane. "Absolutely. Clyde, give me my watch back. Mr. Smith can analyse the scan later. We need to check out what's landed in the wrecker's yard." Sarah Jane agreed, taking her watch back and handing him the baby carrier. "What are you doing?" Clyde asked as we started getting in the car. "Well, there's no baby seat! And the last thing I need is for her to blow the car's electrics! And make sure Mr. Smith stays out of harm's way." Sarah Jane tells him. I shrug at him as I slip into the car. Sarah Jane gives him a few more instructions before she and Rani also get in. We set off to investigate the meteorite.
We arrive a few minutes later. As we got out of the car, Rani started asking about Sky. "So, you think Sky's in danger?" Sarah Jane slammed her door shut. "Why else would anyone leave her on my doorstep?" She countered. "Who do'ya think put her there?" I asked. "The Doctor?" Rani suggested. "And not stop to say hello? Nah. Besides, he wouldn't just leaver her with no explanation, he adores children and would give us as much information as possible to keep her safe." I explained. We're then stopped by a policeman. "I'm sorry, you can't come through here, it's dangerous." He says, putting his hand out to stop us. "It's alright!" Professor Rivers from the PHAROS institute calls out. I've never met the professor personally, but I do remember she was the one to take Sarah Jane, Clyde, and Rani ghost hunting a while back. "Miss Smith is quite used to danger." The Professor tells the officer.
"Professor Rivers!"
"Sarah Jane, good to see you again! Come through, come through." She says as she shakes Sarah Jane's hand, gesturing for us to follow her under the tape. I duck through and follow her into the yard.
We're set to work instantly. Sarah Jane is scanning the area, whilst Rani and the professor are turning things over to look for the meteorite. I can't lie, I got very distracted by the scanner that the Professor showed me, so I was sat tinkering with that for a good couple of minutes before I was shaken back to reality by Rani. "Hi?" I said sheepishly as she stared me down. She had her hands on her hips, the way her mum does before she starts lecturing someone. "I've missed something again...haven't I?" I asked when she glared slightly. "Kinda, yeah. Come one." She hauled me up and dragged me off to the van.
"Right, can I have a bullet point version of what I missed?" I asked Rani while we walked. "Meteorite wasn't a meteorite. It was actually a man made of metal. Not like a robot, but like his skin was metallic. Oh yeah, and he can make himself invisible." She explained. "Right...okay. And I'm guessing the professor has an electromagnetic scanner in her van?" I asked. Rani nodded. "Cool. Lead the way." when we got there, Sarah Jane and the professor were already searching for the pulse. "Whatever landed here emitted UHF electromagnetic radiation. That's what scrambled the radio." Sarah Jane was talking as she paced the van. The Professor was typing on the computer. "And whatever made those footsteps might be able to make themselves invisible, but it can't hide that energy trace!" Sarah Jane announced just as the Professor found something. She pulled up the map and I gasped when I registered where the pulse was. Bannerman Road. I whipped my phone out of my pocket and started trying to ring him. "No reply." I tell Sarah Jane when Clyde doesn't pick up. "Come on! Thank you, Celest!" Sarah Jane calls as we dash to the car. Oh, that's her name. Good to know.
We sat in a tense silence as Sarah Jane drove back home. Once we pulled into the driveway, I leapt out and ran inside. We all called for Clyde as we searched the house, to no avail. The three of us ran upstairs and Sarah Jane summoned Mr. Smith. He slid out from the wall with his usual fanfare. "Sarah Jane, what can I do for you?" He inquired. "I need you to find Clyde. Connect with every CCTV camera in London, every speed camera...whatever it takes, just find him." She ordered. "There are 521,321 CCTV cameras in London, Sarah Jane. It may take some time." He warned us. "Just do it." She snapped at him. "Maybe he's just taken Sky for a walk?" Rani suggested, only to be proven wrong by Mr. Smith locating him. "He is at the Summerwell Nuclear Power Station." Mr. Smith says. "I thought it would take a while." I snarked at him. "I got lucky. It was only the 10,052nd camera I checked." He shot back. I rolled my eyes at him. "Who is that woman?" Sarah Jane asked, squinting at the screen. "Unknown. I cannot find any matches across any data bases." Mr. Smith tells her. "Knowing our luck, she's either Sky's mother or the person actively after her to hurt her...actually, it's probably both." I shrugged as Rani shot me a look. What? I'm not wrong. Knowing the luck we usually have, it's both at once. I did shut up and get back in the car and we sped off to find Sky and Clyde.
Sarah Jane was able to locate the back door of the place and we got out of the car. "Why would that woman take Clyde and Sky to a nuclear power station?" Rani asked as she slammed the door shut. "Honestly, it probably has to do with her powers. Like, I dunno, accelerate her maturity? Maybe? Or maybe she just wants Sky to blow it up for kicks? Who knows?" I started spitting out theories as Sarah Jane led us inside.
Rani and I ran after Sarah Jane. We just turned down a corridor when we heard a woman's voice echo. "She is the saviour of our kind. She will be the stuff of legends. NOW GIVE HER TO ME!" The lady started yelling. "CLYDE! CLYDE, RUN!" Sarah Jane yelled out to him, using her sonic to cause a distraction behind him. We turned to run back the way we came but were stopped by a metal man. We were forced turn back. We're now trapped. Clyde ran to the furthest wall, in the hopes of keeping distance between them and Sky. I made sure to position myself in front of them. "The flesh welp must be destroyed!" The metal man spoke, aiming a gun in Sky's direction. "No!" The woman yelled. Sarah Jane aimed her sonic at the metal man. "Get back! I won't let you hurt this child!" She yelled at him. "She is no child. She is a weapon." He calmly stated. My mind went blank. I couldn't hear anything over the pounding of my heart. Suddenly, Sky started crying. I whipped round to stare at her as she radiated a yellow energy. The bubble grew and grew until it burst. I was stunned silent when the energy condensed into a little girl. The kid reached about my shoulder. Her brown hair was a frizzy mess. She was barefoot and wearing a plain white dress. "Sky?" Sarah Jane asked cautiously. The girl looked around anxiously but seemed to settle when she saw me and Sarah Jane.
An: I don't own the Sarah Jane adventures, just Asha.
