Chapter 31
Heaven Is Waiting
June 7th
Fay and Leah wondered from the woods their bare feet silent on the damp grass. Fay had volunteered to cover patrol and Leah had opted to join her. Both didn't want to deal with the arguments that were sure to unravel at the meeting prior to the bonfire. They were both ready to fight if that's what the pack decided and had let Sam know that early in the day.
The bonfire was out back of the Blacks house, large logs surrounded an old fire pit that had been used for many years. Sam caught their eyes over the fire as they approached. He gave them a solemn nod of his head. They would fight the cold ones. Both girls paused for a second as they took in the information. Sam hadn't been fully on board for joining with the cold ones but if that was the right thing he would do it for the tribe. Fay started forward after a second, there was no point stressing on the decision, she would fight with her pack.
Her eyes scanned the group and her heart rolled in her chest at the sight of the swan girl. She was sat next to Jacob of course. There was an empty spot on his other side, wether he had left it open for her or not Fay didn't know. Either way she didn't care. She went to the opposite side of the fire. Wordlessly she dropped down onto the ground between Embry and Paul's legs. Leah went to the next log sitting on the ground by Seth.
Fay looked to Billy who gave her a small nod before he started telling the legends of the tribe. Fay closed her eyes, focused on his words. She missed the old legends. Hearing them calmed her nerves. After days of late nights and early morning patrols she drifted off to sleep a few legends in. It was the most peaceful rest she had had in days.
She woke with a start as someone shook her arm.
"Hey sleepy head, time to go home," Paul smiled down at her. Fay realised she must have been sleeping against his leg and she pushed away from him.
"Sorry Billy, I didn't mean to fall asleep," Fay apologised to the older man as he wheeled past her.
"It's okay dear, you looked dead on your feet. Go home and get some rest," Billy smiled.
"Come on I'll walk you home," Paul said standing and offering Fay a hand. Fay took his offered hand standing up shaking off the dirt.
"Thanks Paul but I have it," Jacob said appearing at her other side. Fay was surprised to see him.
"You're not driving Bella home?" Fay asked, surprised and a little suspicious.
"She can manage," he smiled, ignoring the bitterness of her tone.
"You're already home Jacob, you don't have to walk me home just to turn around and come all the way back," Fay said stepping back from the two male shifters. "I don't need anyone to walk me home but thank you both for the offer."
"You shouldn't be walking through the woods alone," Jacob protested.
"Come on Jacob, isn't it to late to start acting like the caring boyfriend," Paul scoffed.
"What's that meant to mean?" Jacob asked turning on Paul.
"Both you go home and sleep. I will walk with her," Leah said cutting in before the two could get into a fight.
"Then who will walk you home?" Fay asked Leah.
"I guess I'll just have to spend the night," Leah smiled throwing an arm over Fay's shoulder and pulling her away from the others.
"Sounds good to me," Fay laughed, glad Leah had saved her from that situation.
"Bye Sam," Fay waved as they passed Sam and Emily putting their things into his truck.
"Night Fay," he smiled. Looking past Fay Sam offers Leah a nod, she simply turned her head away and starts walking in the rough direction of Fay's house. Fay followed her, Leah's arm still over her shoulder.
"Well that could have been messy," Leah said as they entered the tree line.
"I just want this week to be over with," Fay sighed and Leah took her arm back.
"Yeah, I can't blame you. It hurts being stuck between two people," Leah said.
"What do you mean?" Fay asked.
"You can't be that blind Fay? Jacob and Paul. Did you just miss what happened back there?" Leah asked.
"Okay now you have lost me fully," Fay laughed looking over to Leah.
"You really can't see it?" Leah asked sounding surprised.
"See what?" Fay demanded.
"Paul and Jacob?" Leah said like it was obvious what she was getting at.
"I'm going to need more then that Leah," Fay said ducking under a low hanging branch.
"Paul's been staring at you for weeks. He's constantly thinking of random things on patrol to cover his real thoughts because if he doesn't, his head fills with thoughts of you. Jacob may have a leg up with the imprint thing but he's just started to realise he's going to have to put some more effort in. And you just act oblivious to both of them. You ignore Paul even though you radiate close to him whenever you can. And you keep making excuses for Jacob even though he's splitting his time between you and leach lover."
"I have to be with Jacob," Fay instantly regretted the words she used.
"You don't have to do shit Fay, not if you don't want to. I see the imprints, I understand it, I hate it but I understand it. But I don't see Jacob's connection with you. Not like the others have. You use to glow when you saw him, now you seem to always be waiting for his next stuff up. Yeah you two have that mind thoughts thing but it seems more like a glitch in your connection then a gift. Don't you think?" Leah wasn't sure how Fay was going to take her words.
"I think I would jump off a cliff if he asked me too but I feel like all I do is wait for him to tell me he's picked her. And it's going to hurt a thousand times worse then jumping off that cliff ever could." Fay admitted out loud.
"Imprints are either the spirits telling us who we are meant for or just pairing up two people that will make the strongest offspring." Leah said with quotation marks around strongest offspring.
"Then why didn't you end up with Sam? If they are trying to make the best mated pair then you two should have been together. What's stronger then a female shifter?" Fay loved Emily but still what could be stronger then two shifters together?
"He needed someone to level him out. We would have killed each other if we had to be together all the time, no thoughts to ourselves. It would have been worse then it is now." Fay thought on it for a minute and understood what Leah was saying.
"Yeah, you would have," Fay nodded in agreement.
"I can't forgive him, but I can't blame him either. Stuck between a rock and a hard place." Leah laughed at her situation.
"Well if you ever need some where to hide, my door is always open," Fay said smiling at her pack sister.
"Thanks." Leah paused like she wanted to say more. She let out a deep sigh. "Mum is packing away dads things at the moment. I know it's hard on her doing it alone but I can't watch it. It's just to sad."
"You miss him, there is nothing wrong with that Leah," Fay patted Leah on the back.
They continued on in silence. When they reach the house the pair dug through the fridge for food. They had missed dinner at the bonfire and were starving. They called it a night after they had eaten their fill of steak and eggs. Fay showered and changed into a clean t-shirt. She buried herself under the covers. The night was long, her sleep a mess, and dreams torturous. Waking up Fay dragged herself out of bed. Her hair was getting to a shaggy point and short curls went in every direction. She pulled on shorts and a black sports bra.
The guest rooms were empty and she couldn't hear any movement in the house. Leah must have left before sun up. She liked her early morning runs. Fay had hoped they could have run together but it looked like she would be solo again this morning. She wasn't sure when her next patrol would be. Sam seemed to have no order to it lately, if you stood still long enough you were on shift.
There was the sound of a truck pulling up out front. Fay walked towards the sound opening one of the glass doors in the living area and stepping out on the porch.
A red truck stopped in front of the house and the one and only Bella Swan stepped out of the drivers seat. Of course Jacob was with her. He jumped out of the passenger side of the truck. Fay swayed forward unsure what was going on. She lent against one of the wooden pillars watching their approach.
"Good morning Fay ," Jacob stopped a meter from her looking up at her with a breathless look on his face.
"It was, now I'm not too sure," Fay said not taking her eyes off Bella.
"I went to talk with the Cullen's this morning. There will be another training session this afternoon," Jacob announced. "They are still not sure when the army will arrive but they think when the first snow falls. Could be as early as next week."
"Okay?" Fay wasn't sure why he had to deliver this news in person, with her.
"Also they have been thinking and since the army is tracking Bella's scent it's not safe for her to be near the battle. But if she goes somewhere else they will just follow the smell away from the field."
"And?" Fay could tell he was building to something.
"If one of us carry her we will cover the sent." Jacob finished.
"And what? You're asking my permission to carry her?" Fay asked crossing her arms over her chest.
"No, I would like it if you were the one to carry her and stayed with her in the mountains." Fay was taken aback by that.
"Jake?" Bella hissed. Apparently this was the first she was hearing of this as well.
"Then you have lost your mind." Fay lugged, jumping down to stand in front of him. "First off thinking I could be around her that long and not want to kill her myself. And secondly you think I would sit out on a fight while the rest of the pack risk their necks."
"I want you safe," he seemed torn on that comment.
"Not everyone can be safe in this situation Jacob. Ask Seth to do it, he's to young to be in the fight. I'm sure Sam and Leah will both be okay with that." Fay suggested.
"Fay," he reached for her hand.
"Jacob please take her away from here." With one last flick of her eyes at the Swan girl Fay took off for the trees. She couldn't believe he brought her here, a safe place was only as safe as the people in it. With Bella around this place was as safe as a dragons den.
Author notes***
This chapter was fully written yesterday from scratch, i don't think it turned out to badly it could even be one of my most favourite chapters in this book. I did want Fay and Leah to hang out more but that just hasn't happened hope to have them together a bit more in future chapters. Next chapter is 99% written so if i can get a review today i'll try to post it tonight.
