Chapter 2: The Past, Long Forgotten
But back before she became obsessed with getting her friends back, Usagi was already . . . different, when she returned after what happened.
ll
According to those that were closest to Usagi, she only acted the same for a few days after she came home.
It was like she was in denial of... everything. She acted like it never happened. That was, until the crying started.
ll
See, after a few day of being home, Shingo was actually the first one to notice it.
ll
ll
It was a day after a long school day and Shingo accidentally fell asleep when he came home. He woke up to see that it was around 4:15 in the morning, but he also heard something.
ll
ll
At first, he couldn't discern it, but when he quietly opened his door, he heard a soft sobbing coming from somewhere in the house. At first, he thought it was his mother, so he was going towards their room. But as he passed Usagi's room, that's where he heard the sobbing the loudest.
ll
Since her door was a crack open, he decided to look inside.
ll
ll
Since her bed was so close to the window, and since there was a full moon out that morning, he could clearly see his older sister crying while she held a picture frame close to her chest while the cat sat next to her on the bed.
ll
ll
She quietly muttered to herself.
ll
ll
Shing wondered if he could ever understand what she went through, he inched forward behind the door.
ll
ll
But his foot tapped the door and the door moved. With quick and silent movement, Shingo avoided being seen by his sister, who snapped her head in the direction of the doorframe.
ll
ll
She looked up from her framed photo of herself with the other girls. She had large shiny tears in her eyes, ready to fall with the rest.
ll
ll
Fearing that her family would see her and worry, Usagi quickly wiped her tears and went to her door.
ll
She looked out. In a whispering voice, she called out.
ll
(Usagi) H-Hello? Is someone there?
ll
ll
There was no one in the dark hallway, only herself and the moonlight spilling from her room.
ll
ll
ll
ll
The next morning, after Usagi left in a hurry for school, Shingo would inform their parents about the event and ask what he could do for her.
ll
ll
ll
(Shingo) Can someone please tell me? She's suffering from losing almost everyone she ever cared about! There has to be something we can do.
ll
ll
Ikuko and Kenji looked at each other, frowns on each of their faces acknowledging that they too wished they knew the answers.
ll
ll
(Kenji) Shingo... You gotta understand. It's MUCH more complicated than just that. She saw people turn against her, she saw the worst sides of people, she saw people killed without mercy and most of all, she must've watched all her friends die before her very eyes.
ll
Ikuko placed a hand on her husband's shoulder.
ll
(Ikuko) We wish we could help her, but it's just not as simple as getting someone to talk to her or as easy as just forgetting that this ever happened. We can only help her when she asks for it. If you want to ask her yourself, you are welcome to try. We've tried ourselves... but she just said that everything was fine. She wouldn't even tell us how she was feeling.
ll
(Kenji) We know she's hurting right now, but she doesn't want to open up to us. If there was something we could do to help her, by the gods, we would do it.
ll
ll
ll
(Shingo) I.. I see.
ll
After the initial shock of knowing that his parents knew long before him and already gave up, he felt determined to help no matter what.
ll
ll
(Shingo) But you know what?! I'm gonna try over and over again until she finally allows us to help her. And I won't stop after only a few tries!
ll
ll
ll
(Ikuko) Before you do, listen. Don't be too aggressive with your approach and don't try so often. Only try every once and again. If you poke and jab too often, then she might snap at you or worse.
ll
ll
(Kenji) I... tried that approach once before. She ended up screaming at me and locking herself in her room for the rest of that evening. She wouldn't talk to me, let alone even make eye contact with me. Your mother talked me out of going further with that approach so be careful.
ll
ll
ll
(Shingo) Warning received. But what did she scream at you that was so bad?
ll
ll
ll
(Kenji) Well... At first it was the usual avoidance teenager stuff like "Leave me alone.", "Stop bothering me" or even the "I need to be alone right now." But I was so desperate that I pushed and pushed until she just snapped.
ll
ll
(Shingo) That doesn't seem so bad.
ll
ll
(Kenji) I said "at first". After she snapped. She said that we would never understand what she saw or what she heard. She was going on and on about what happened out there. She was screaming at me through tears and bloodshot eyes of rage. After hearing what she said, I was completely stunned. She herself was mortified about going off on me so suddenly, so she ran to her room and locked the door.
ll
ll
(Shingo) I don't remember this. When the heck did this even occur?
ll
ll
(Ikuko) A few days ago. You were in your room with your headphones on full blast as per usual.
ll
ll
ll
(Ikuko) This is what we mean Shingo. She's extremely volatile right now, so we can't just force her to open up to us.
ll
ll
ll
ll
After talking to his parents, Shingo was careful to attempt talking to his sister about her current condition. But most of the time, their conversations would go as such.
ll
ll
On the first try, Shingo tried talking to her after she finished her school work, which she was doing much better on. It was like she did a complete 180 with her life. She was on time to school every day, did extra curriculars when she could... Her teachers were almost astonished by the change, but contributed to her experience with her family during the plague.
ll
ll
There was a knock on Usagi's door.
ll
ll
(Usagi) Come in!
ll
ll
(Shingo) Hey Usagi, got a minute, I wanna talk to you.
ll
ll
(Usagi) Yeah, just give me a second... annnnndd THERE! So? Whats up?
ll
ll
Shingo was still weirded out by the change. His sister seemed like completely different person when it came to her studies.
ll
ll
(Shingo) How are you doing? Mentally I mean.
ll
ll
ll
(Usagi) I've never been better! School's a breeze now! The teachers and other students don't make fun of me anymore, I'm getting better grades...
ll
She began to list things that were going well with her school, but Shingo cut her off.
ll
ll
(Shingo) I think you know what I'm referring to. After you came back... you seemed like you were in denial, I just-
ll
ll
Usagi stood up quickly and stood right in front of Shingo.
ll
ll
This made Shingo nervous. After what his parents have told him, he was expectin her to flip out on him right there and then. But she didn't.
ll
Instead, she hugged him tightly and whispered in his ear softly.
ll
ll
(Usagi) It's okay Shingo... I know it may look like I'm in denial or hiding something deep down, but I'm not. I visit them every day, I talk to them about everything going on in my life. But just having you and everyone else in my life, here, with me? That's more than I can ask for.
ll
ll
It was warm. He thought that it would feel cold as she shouted at him, but it didn't. Her hug was so warm and loving, he hoped that she really was fine. She released him and was about to go back to her studies.
ll
ll
ll
(Shingo) O..kay... I was just really worried after I saw you-
ll
ll
ll
She stopped dead in her tracks. Now the energy of the room changed. He was afraid.
ll
ll
Her voice became flat, cold and vicious.
ll
She didn't turn around, but she asked.
ll
(Usagi) Shingo. What do you mean by that?
ll
ll
(Shingo) W-W-Well, last night, I woke up around 4 A.M. and saw you crying in your room and I-
ll
ll
(Usagi) Did you tell anyone?
ll
ll
(Shingo) I may... have told our parents, but thats it I swear!
ll
ll
Usagi turned around and faced Shingo. At this point, he now knew what the warning meant.
ll
ll
Her eyes were narrowed, she was looking at him like he had just spoke ill of her deceased friends.
ll
(Usagi) Great, now they're probably gonna try and get me admitted again! Thanks for nothing you fucking... IDIOT!
ll
She pushed him out of her room with ease and she slammed the door loudly in his face. She didn't apologize like she usually did when she was moody before, but now there was just silence from her room, only the sound of her pencil etching the pages of her notebook or the occasional mutter about a difficult problem.
ll
ll
Shingo just stepped back and walked into his room and just plopped himself onto the bed. This was a side of Usagi he had never seen before. She was the type that would never hold a grudge, but that all changed when she returned. The following days, she didn't so much as look at her family, much less talk to them. She would even go as far as to leave before anyone would get up just so she didn't have to be in the same room as them.
ll
ll
ll
At home, she was just a changed person, no could blame her for it. But everywhere else, she was the same ol Usagi, just this time, a better student, that's all. It was only after weeks would go by that people would start asking about the others. She wouldn't say anything to them, just that she didn't know. But for the few that pushed her about it, she would strictly tell them to drop it "...or else."
ll
ll
Other than this, Usagi was the girl who was friends with everyone, until they weren't.
ll
ll
But there were a few individuals who would start to push a little too hard. They were just so desperate to find out what happened to the others for different reasons. For some, it was a crush they had, for others, it was a friend that was extremely curious. But they would receive a message soon enough.
ll
ll
ll
ll
Stil being Sailor Moon, Usagi was still extremely powerful, even without the other guardian's crystals.
ll
ll
ll
There was one, a senior in their high school that bugged Usagi every day without fail, even after Usagi gave him a black eye. He persisted to the point of insanity.
ll
ll
So one night, during the week, the boy hatched a plot. He would kidnap her and her family and hold them until she told them where Makoto was.
ll
ll
With the help of another senior boy and two senior girls who wanted to join for the fun of it, the boy rented a moving truck and parked it down the road. The four all had black clothes on and ski masks so they couldn't identified later.
ll
ll
The four were about to enter the front gate but they all stopped when they heard something land in front of the front door with a quiet "woosh".
ll
ll
There, on the front lawn, was Sailor Moon. She looked furious, her eyes were narrowed and focused on them.
ll
ll
ll
(Boy 1) What the hell? Is that... Sailor Moon?
ll
(Girl 1) She's dead remember? This is just some chick pretending to be her.
ll
(Girl 2) But what if she survived somehow? She could really hurt us, maybe even kill us!
ll
ll
(Boy 2) Will you shut up!? They could hear you and wake up if we're-
ll
ll
The three watched as the tall and skinny second boy was lifted off the ground by two hands by his own head and slammed into the concrete by Sailor Moon.
ll
ll
There was a loud crack. The three were horrified but were even more afraid when Sailor Moon picked up the boy by the collar of his shirt and looked at all of them with bright blue eyes glowing with fury. She stared at all of them.
ll
ll
(Usagi) I told you to back off. I TOLD you that I didn't know. I TOLD YOU that you should've left it alone. Now look what's happened!
ll
ll
The three were completely frozen with fear, only their chests going up and down as their breaths quickened. Their eyes darted between Usagi and their bloody accomplice.
ll
ll
ll
She was about to let them go with their friend with this warning, but then she had a change of heart when...
ll
ll
ll
(Girl 1) Wait... that hair... that voice... is that? Usagi Tsukino, from class 1A?! One of the people we're here to kidnap!?
ll
ll
She couldn't let them go anymore. Once they knew who she was, the force that kept them from recognizing her vanished and her cover was blown.
ll
ll
The other boy and girl started to agree, adding in that they always thought Usagi looked a lot like Sailor Moon.
ll
ll
ll
She attacked them ruthlessly and hid them by morning. Afterwards, she laid in bed and was only able to sleep for about three hours before she had to get up for school.
ll
ll
When she arrived at school, students were already talking about the missing boys and girls.
ll
ll
It would be during the afternoon classes when the teachers and staff would call all the students into the auditorium to announce the passing of four of their classmates.
ll
Close friends were crying into each other's arms, other students were wondering just what happened and a few were quietly commenting to themselves about how they deserved their demises.
ll
ll
In the official report, the four victims were found in the back of a moving truck, a large blood splatter suggested that the group was first attacked in front of the Tsukino home and then they were dragged and thrown into the back of the moving truck. When they were found, it wasn't clear when they were killed due to the cold weather preserving their bodies. This was, at first, a hopeful sign to detectives on the scene because the cold could possibly preserve evidence that would otherwise be lost to the elements as time went on. But unfortunately, there were no pieces of evidence to be found on the magled corpses of the unfortunate teens.
ll
ll
In the official statements of the detectives, they commented on the horrific display that the teens were displayed. Each of them had bones that had been broken breaking through the skin and blood sprayed all over their bodies. It was like they had all been thrown into a blender, but instead of blades, they were hit by concrete beams.
ll
ll
The case went cold after only a few weeks. With no leads to follow and now suspects to arrest and question, the case became a cold case file that would never be solved.
ll
Before it became a cold case though, of course, students, teachers, and anyone that was remotely related to the case was desperately trying to find anything that could help them solve the murder. Hell, even Usagi and her family was questioned. Just to see if they had heard or seen anything. Most of the family was sincere during their questioning. But with Usagi, her time with detectives was slightly different.
ll
When Usagi Tsukino was brought in for questioning, she was distraught. There were signs that she had been crying and she was visibly upset. Detectives were only able to get her to answer a few questions before she became too emotional for questioning to continue.
ll
But before she became overcome with emotion, she did tell detectives that they were obsessed with her deceased friends and were threatening to kidnap her and her family for answers.
ll
This threw detectives into a loop and the case was filed as a cold case.
ll
ll
After the murder just down the road from them, everyone was a little spooked. I mean, four people were killed in their own front yard after all. And not only that, Usagi had told them about the threats they had made, so there was that too.
ll
But Usagi, she was completely indifferent to the whole thing. She was completely unaffected by her classmates' deaths, even though she was friends with them and everyone else, it was like she couldn't care less about them.
ll
ll
Even when Luna tried asking her about why she seemed so indifferent, she gave vague answers, but one that shocked Luna was one that Usagi snuck under her breath.
ll
She was doing homework while talking to Luna and suddenly her voice got very quiet and very quickly under her breath, she said:
ll
ll
(Usagi) Oh come on, they deserved to die.
ll
ll
When Luna asked her to repeat the sentence, Usagi denied saying anything at all.
ll
ll
In the time from when she started her junior year in high school to when she graduated, ten more of her classmates would die under "mysterious" circumstances. But there was a pattern to their deaths. Each one of them said they figured out who Sailor Moon was, they just had to confirm it and they would tell whoever they were talking about the next day.
ll
ll
You would think that after the first few deaths that the students wouldn't say such things if it meant that they would be killed.
ll
ll
ll
Each murder was different.
ll
ll
The next murder, the girl had been stabbed with an object that was so sharp, crime scene investigators told each other that, hadn't they known better, they would've thought that the girl have been stabbed 100 times in the chest with a giant scalpel.
ll
But that wasn't the only thing strange about the murder. The body itself had been left there for everyone to see. There was no evidence to suggest that it had been placed there, but the culprit had actually murdered the girl then and there without remorse. That is said after on scene detectives found extreme bruising on the neck. Further analysis would show that the girl's neck was squeezed so tight that her neck was nearly shattered before she died.
ll
ll
These murders would later be dubbed, the Blood Moon Murders since the only common trends were that each victim had claimed to know Sailor Moon's secret identity and they were each killed in horrible fasions and left in public for dead and for people to find, like they were warning people to stop digging into figuring out her real identity. But since authorities were told that Sailor Moon and her group had perished and that the identity of Sailor Moon was still unknown, it was assumed that the identity of the Murderer was some kind of deranged and obsessed fan of Sailor Moon, going as far as to protect her real identity through murder.
ll
ll
ll
ll
The police were always asking people to speak up so they could find this person, whoever they were, so that they could be put in prison for their heinous crimes.
ll
ll
ll
The Tsukino's were afraid at this point. So was Mamoru, but the person who should've been afraid the most, Usagi Tsukino, was unbothered by the new. She even went so far as to say that "those peopel should've minded their own business anyway."
ll
This sent chills down the Tsukino's spines. But Mamoru, he wanted answers.
ll
On a late winters evening, months later, Mamoru invited Usagi over for tea after she got out of school.
ll
ll
When Usagi walked into the studio apartment, everything was normal. The two asked each other about their days over tea, laughed together and when they were settled, Mamoru became serious.
ll
ll
(Mamoru) So Usako... I heard things at school are going back to normal again... after the... you know.
ll
ll
(Usagi) Yeah, people are finally starting to talk more and be a little happier now.
ll
ll
(Mamoru) I know this might sound a little ... mean, but.
ll
ll
ll
Mamoru paused, preparing for what would come next.
ll
ll
(Mamoru) DID YOU OR DID YOU NOT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THOSE MURDERS!?
ll
ll
For the first time in months, Usagi looked surprised, but she just broke out into a hysterical laugh.
ll
ll
(Usagi) Really Momo? Is that supposed to be some kind of joke!?
ll
This made Mamoru somewhat angry.
ll
(Mamoru)(She's... laughing!? How was any of that funny to her? I just made a serious accusation of her and there she is... laughing..)
ll
Usagi kept laughing until Mamoru shouted angrily again.
ll
(Mamoru) THIS ISN'T A JOKE USAKO! WHAT DID YOU DO!? I already know that one of the only things that the victims had in common were that they claimed to know who you were! AND they were in the same class as you, and you're the only person I can think of who would remotely care about something like that!
ll
ll
Suddenly, Usagi wasn't laughing anymore. Her face was emotionless, but her eyes stared right though Mamoru.
ll
ll
ll
(Usagi) You... really think I did this don't you.
ll
ll
First Usagi suddenly stood straight up, then Mamoru did the same. He was afraid. He wasn't afraid of the reality that she was a murderer, but more so afraid of the way she was looking at him. It was if he were no threat to her and that she could easily destroy him if she wished, then she slowly moved towards him as she spoke, so he did the same.
ll
ll
(Usagi) Now tell me this ,Mamo. Why would I care SO much about keeping my identity a secret, huh? You think its because the government is on a witch hunt for me as we speak? Or because everyone want Sailor Moon after seeing her just once? Or might it be that I just want to be normal for a while? Think about that? And those people? Please. The things they wanted to do to me and my friends that I just so happen to overhear were so disgusting and degrading. I wish I had killed them at the school.
ll
ll
Mamoru felt his back touch the glass window that overlooked a part of Minato. He was frozen with fear and felt trapped by Usagi's gaze.
ll
But something happened.
ll
ll
Usagi looked at her own reflection as she was about to get in Mamoru's face. Then suddenly, she apologized repeatedly and sprinted out the door before Mamoru could call her back. But he didn't want her to come back. He was afraid of her now. She looked like she was ready to do something horrible to him and admitted that she was the killer.
ll
ll
But there was nothing he could do. She was a Sailor Guardian, the Princess of the Moon Kingdom and extremely powerful. Even if he told the police, who's to say she would show mercy? Who's to say she wouldn't go to war with the entire world? She was so powerful, that simply throwing her in prison, or a mental asylum would be physically impossible without her allowing them to.
ll
ll
ll
ll
It would be years before Usagi and Mamoru would consider reconciliation.
ll
ll
Afterwards, Mamoru would leave Japan to live in the States for many years. He would try again and again to establish bonds with people over there, but his life was much longer than theirs. Every friend or girlfriend he would talk to would eventually leave him after they saw that he didn't age in his 30's or 40's... or his 90's... or 100's.
ll
Usagi lived her life working. Eventually, she would work her way to the top, just as the company was being closed as the technology or service had been replaced.
ll
Over the course of years and years, Usagi and Mamoru found each other again, alone, with nobody to understand them other than each other.
ll
By the time they finished their reconciliation, they had revealed themselves to the world and established their kingdom as well as their newly mended relationship that ended with them getting married to each other and having a child in the process.
ll
ll
After establishing their kingdom, all of the things that separated them were memories from another lifetime. Now, they were Neo-Queen Serenity and Neo-King Endymion.
End of Chapter 2: The Past, Long Forgotten
