Prompt: "I thought you knew?"

"I… I thought you knew," Sephiroth said, slowly, watching Genesis face and not quite understanding his expression, "I thought both of you knew."

"I did not, in fact, know," Genesis huffed, crossing his arms over his chest uncomfortably. The gesture closed him off from the truth he apparently didn't want to acknowledge. It hurt, a great deal more than Sephiroth had expected, to be so entirely rejected.

The piece of paper, Genesis' paperwork for his Second Class inauguration and the blood work for his first round of the higher dose injections of Mako, sat innocently on Genesis' desk. It was slightly crumpled from fingers curling into a fist. Genesis' name and vital statistics were typed in even lines at the top, including his biological mother's name. It wasn't a secret from Genesis that he had been adopted, but no one had ever seen fit to tell either him or Sephiroth that they were related through their birth mother. Only her first name, apparently to protect her identity as both donor and surrogate: Jenova.

Sephiroth looked down, took his eyes off of Genesis scowling face and displeased body language, "It doesn't have to mean anything," he said, forcing the tremble out of the words through long practice, "do what you will with this information then."

Genesis stayed where he was, leaning against the wall on the far side of the dormitory room he shared with Sephiroth and Angeal. Sephiroth chanced another look up at him, finding an expression he couldn't define taking the place of the anger.

"I'm not mad at you," Genesis sighed, dropping his arms to his sides and walking around to slump into his desk chair, "I mean if you don't want it to matter, it doesn't have to, but I don't mind being your brother."

Sephiroth fought down the urge to bite at his lip, "I don't mind," he said.

"In that case," Genesis slapped his hands against his desk, making everything on it rattle, "I'm going to be the most obnoxious older brother on the face of the Planet."
