The Queens Protégée
Ch 13
The fight for our lives
Dimitri
I couldn't believe this was happening again, but this time I wouldn't be on the sidelines. I was going to fight back. I'm glad that I had my stake on me, it was the one my babushka had given me when I left Russia. Did she see this coming? Who knew, but I didn't have time to dwell on that thought. I was in the fight for my life.
After I successfully killed my first Strigoi the element of surprise was gone.
I couldn't get my mind off Rose, was she safe? Was Christian safe? I couldn't stop thinking about them. If this was going to be my last moments on earth I'm glad I spent them with Rose. I would die knowing she loved me and I loved her.
I was fighting off two Strigoi when all the lights on campus turned on and sirens started blaring. Thank god she made it.
ROSE
Stan had given me a stake and told me to wait for orders. I didn't, as soon as he was gone I ran, I ran straight for Lissa to make sure she was safe. I was running towards her dorm when I was stopped dead in my tracks. Her emotions were so high she pulled me in, she was safe with Adrian in the dorms, but Christian wasn't with them. She was screaming at me through our bond to find him.
I ran in a completely different direction and headed to the only place I knew Christian could be, the Chapel. The attic of the chapel was a special place for Lissa, she liked to go up to be by herself and her thoughts after her family died. Once her and Christian started dating she invited him up there and it was now their place. He had to be there, I hoped.
I almost made it to the chapel before I saw my first Strigoi. I'm not an expert, but they looked like they were just recently turned. Their moves were sloppy and I could tell they were a moiri before they were changed. It didn't take much for me to be able to stake them. I really couldn't rely on all of them being newly turned and that easy to kill.
"Damn Hathaway." Christian yelled at me from just outside the chapel.
"Christian, get your ass back in that chapel."
"No."
"Christian, Lissa would kill me if anything happened to you."
"I feel your love Hathaway."
"Dammit Christian, now's not the time for banter."
"I know. Look, it's my parents doing this, I know it. I'm not going to let them get away again. I'm going to fight back."
"Christian."
"I'm serious, either you are with me or I'm doing this on my own."
"Fine, but if you die I'm having Lissa bring you back so I can kill you myself."
"Deal."
Me and Christian fought side by side for what felt like hours. He would light them up with fire to stun them and then I would go in for the kill. We were getting to the point of complete exhaustion and I knew he didn't have much magic left in him. We could see the sun starting to rise, soon this would be over.
DIMITRI
Eventually I made it towards the main part of campus. I had lost count of how many Strigoi I had staked. None of them had been Christian's parents, I knew they had to be around here somewhere. I could just hope they hadn't found him and he was safe.
I had met up with some of the other senior novices and we were all fighting off Strigoi together. We had managed to keep them from getting into any of the buildings where the moiri and underclassmen were. We were bloodied and bruised, but we're winning. This wasn't the same as what happened at St Basils. We were prepared, we did drill after drill of what to do if this happened and I couldn't have been more thankful. That didn't mean we hadn't lost some of our own, I had seen a couple of bodies of classmates, but I didn't have time to stop, we would mourn our dead later.
I noticed most of the Strigoi that were left were starting to retreat. I looked out to the horizon and saw why. The sun was slowly starting to rise. Thank god this would be over soon, I was exhausted and didn't know how much longer I could fight.
"Mason don't" I heard Eddie scream. I looked up from the last Strigoi I had staked and saw Mason Running.
"Mason , what are you doing?' I yelled.
"I can't let them get away."
"Mason, it's over, let them go." Screamed Meredith.
It was too late, Mason was full of adrenaline and wasn't stopping till he got the last Strigoi. We watched in horror as the Strigoi turned around and stopped dead in his tracks. Mason ran head on into him, not expecting him to stop. Mason, being exhausted like the rest of us, didn't have the energy to fight back when the Strigoi grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up. He snapped his neck like it was nothing then threw him on the ground and started to walk off like it was no big deal. Eddie, after watching his best friend die right in front of him, ran after the Strigoi and staked him through the back and they both went down. I ran up to him to help push the stake all the way through. When we knew the Strigoi was good and dead I helped pull Eddie off him. He went over to Mason's body and cradled it while sobbing.
ROSE
Me and Christian were standing in the middle of a bunch of dead Strigoi catching our breaths. We made it, we were both alive.
"Christian, dear son, we have finally reunited." I look to see what I believe is his parents walking towards us. I immediately had my stake at the ready.
"Don't kill them. Please."Christian pleaded with me.
"I'm not going to let them harm you, Sparky."
"I got this Hathaway."
"I don't know what you came here to accomplish, but it's not going to work."
"Oh son, but it already did. You're standing here in front of us. We can finally be a family again." His dad said.
"You're crazy if you think I'm going to join you."
"Ah, but you will, you will be begging me to change you once you have lost everything you care so much about, including your sweet innocent girlfriend."
"No, no, no." At that Christian had it and he lit up his dad like I've never seen him use his magic.
"No, this is over. I'm done watching over my shoulder for you. I'm done having people think I'm just like you. I'm not like you, this ends now." By the time he was done yelling his dad was a dead burnt chrispy.
"Noooo." His mom came running at him, but Christian couldn't do anything to stop her, he was out of magic. I ran like I have never ran before and went straight for his mom. I don't know how it happened, but somehow when I ran into her she managed to turn the stake on me. I have never felt so much pain in my life and I went down holding onto my stake.
"Roza!" Oh my god Dimitri, he's alive. Tears started to fall from my eyes. Meredith ran over to me and started to put pressure on where I was stabbed, trying to staunch the bleeding.
"Hang in there Rose." She said through tears of her own. Dimitri, not missing a beat, grabbed his stake and went for Christians mom. He stabbed her over and over again. Eddie had to pull him off her to get him to stop.
"Roza." Dimitri said, crouching down and sitting my head on his lap.
"Stay with me Roza, help is on the way." I could feel myself slipping in unconsciousness.
"Roza, keep your eyes open. Look at me. You're going to be ok." I grabbed his hand.
"It's ok, she's safe, Christian's safe, you're safe."
"No Roza No."
"Please keep her safe."
"Roza."
"Promise me you will keep her safe."
"I can't Roza."
"Promise me."
"I promise." With that I let go and closed my eyes, knowing that Lissa was safe I could let go.
I had to do it. I had to kill Mason. Sorry if you wanted a lot of action, but I don't t really write fight scenes.
Hope you still enjoyed it
