A/N: This is my first fanfiction and english is not my first language.
I will try my best to write that story, I can't guarantee I won't do small and big mistakes, in fact I might already be making some, but thanks for giving my story a chance.
Also the prologue of that story (Which is more a kind of introduction/beginning of the story) might be quite long, taking 5 to 7 chapters in length.
Prologue part 1: A day like the others
Year 3003 AS, Kingdom of ice
An older icewing with a large satchel and white cape wearing a dark blue symbols walks gently in the ice palace, but remains thoughtful, ignoring others present on his way...
After a few minute, he arrives in a grand library and smiles a little as he enters the place. Some icewings look at him but quickly turn away.
The old dragon silently searches the gigantic bookshelves, and after a time he finds and grabs the old scroll he desired before he sat on the table closest to him. Then he puts the scroll and takes two others from his satchel, one blank and the other full, and starts to read the scroll with utter focus...
After much time has passed, a young adult icewing approaches him, his gaze showing some confusion:
- "The beginning of the Kingdom of ice?" The older one turns his head to stare at him with a kind look.
- "Yes?"
- "Reflection, don't you know about that subject? Was it not taught well enough for someone of your position?"
- "It was my little Coldspine, but I still have more questions than answers for that subject, a lot more."
- "So, what does this scroll tells that is new to you." Reflection grins and puts a claw on the beginning of a specific sentence. "Look for yourself."
The young icewing leans his head and reads the bit of text:
"The icewing tribe gained magic through an unknown event that only legends and myth spoke with confidence. But soon after that, the first animi appeared, and not only in our tribe."
Reflection shift his claw to point on a sentence well below the one they were reading. "Here, this should be more interesting."
"Even as animi brought prosperity to their tribe or tribes with their otherworldly powers, the Palace of ice seemed to be built centuries after this apparent golden age of magic. During which the power was used more and more, whatever was the intent that may be and who commanded it."
Coldspine remains unimpressed as he looks at Reflection again.
- "Don't react like that, what I showed you is still interesting, but not at first glance. With that scroll, I count more than twenty ones addressing the subject, and look here."
"Even though such period is mostly mysterious for us today, some ruins and place can shed some light on the events, be it in our kingdom or in others."
- "So...? You think you know some of these places that are worthy of investigation."
- "Indeed, the ruins of Akoliss, an old place not too far at the East of the palace has some potential."
- "You mean these ruins full of decayed tools and structures? It's true that they contains some weapons still in good shape, but..."
- "It's true that what is found at first glance isn't extraordinary, but when you dig a good chunk, it become more worthy of attention."
- "You think that? What did you found then."
- "I will show you, just follow me in my quarters."
And so Reflection closes the scrolls and puts them back where they were, and walks towards the exit with Coldspine behind him. After a moderate walk, the two icewings arrive at the quarter's door.
A guard nearby looks at Coldspine, but Reflection speaks his words. "He is with me. Coldspine is one of my companions during free time." "Very well."
The guard nods and turns away, walking once again in the corridor as the two icewing enter Reflection's room and close the door.
- "Why do you have to always explain yourself to the guards? They wouldn't have doubted a second circle's approval."
The old dragon looks at his companion with a serious face.
"Because one below second circle is just tolerated. You may think that with all the third and fourth circle's dragons that work here, nobility will be more likely to accept someone like you, and that is true. But never forget that those at the top are very prone on fighting themselves, and this competition and "no matter the cost" mentality plague them easily. One living in the palace may not care about collateral damage if it hurts his rivals and he can get away with it."
Reflection takes off his satchel and white cape, then sat on the bed for a moment. The young icewing stares at him with determination and continue the conversation.
- "I understand, I really do, but don't worry too much about me here. I can keep my distance, and if I need to, storm out of this place! All this training won't be wasted."
- "Very well, if you decide to remain this fierce, I will have to continue to take care of both of us. But just... be careful."
The old one goes to his desk and pulls out many compartments until he finds what he wanted. Then he shows a box containing a large but fragmented copper disk. Various sentences and even others symbols are all written very small and in a perfect circular way on the metal. But the general motif on disk suggest that it is a sort of mechanical gear.
"This artifact is complex enough to draw attention and the special symbols written on it? They have some relation to magic in their meaning." The icewing takes a scroll and shows it.
- "This scroll contains all the symbols of this ancient alphabet. Even if we don't understand it yet, we know it can't be ignored."
- "But why do you show me that? It's out of my knowledge to extract information from this disk. I am not even well versed in magic's lore and history."
- "No, I don't expect you to do that kind of work, just to show you that the ruins of Akoliss are worthy of attention."
- "And you think we could go together to the ruins? How would you find the necessary time in our loaded schedule?"
- "In time we could. Beside, the organization looks forward to research this place and will gladly have a dragon like you, even if not for long."
- "It would be surprising if Coldmoon accept, I don't even have a passion as strong as you nor the means to explore the lore of magic and the ancients."
- "I can make a little arrangement, so your name would not be stained if that is what you fear. But I understand, I will do my best for you to have a good future."
- "Thank you Reflection."
Reflection goes to the door and opens it. "You can go now." "Really?" "Yes. I have some planing to do for both of us. I will likely see you tomorrow."
Coldspine goes to the entrance and turns his head one last time before leaving. "Goodbye master Reflection. See you soon." "See you soon Coldspine."
And with that, the older icewing returns to his occupation alone in his room. He has bits of planing to do before going back to his expecting work for the rest of the day.
Important points:
- Animus magic works differently, it isn't a limitless power anymore(you can't do great things without any training or effort) but has limitless potential. It is more like a great ability that needs training and others factors to develop.
- There will be a lot of OCs because the story does not only focus on the night kingdom
(There are too many events and actions that happen outside of it.), I need more characters to fulfil the many roles.
