Hi Readers: And welcome to a new story I hope to write for you guys starting now. I have been trying so hard to write a new story, and I hate how hard it's been. But now, I think I finally have an idea which I can work with. Let me know what you think of the story.
Chapter One
Change of Plans
November 15, 2018 – Firehouse 51, Chicago
Gabriela Dawson-Casey has been feeling horrible for the past four weeks. So bad, that she had to go to the doctor in Puerto Rico; but they didn't know what was wrong. So, they sent her to a specialist, who also couldn't figure out what was wrong, which is why she's here today. Back at the place she never thought she'd come back to, so that she can speak to Matt. Speak to her husband, for now. After all, she and Matt are divorcing; maybe. They haven't figured everything out yet, and they've yet to sign anything, which means that Matt is still her husband. And that's precisely why she was here, because she needed her husband right now. She needed her husband as she tried to figure out what was wrong, especially if it was related to her aneurysm, which was making her scared. Though, she was also scared for another reason; she was scared of the unknown: whether Matt would even want to see her right now.
And as she stood outside her former house where she worked on the Ambo for years, she just knew that it was time for her to go inside so that she could talk to her husband; talk to the man she loves and tell him how she's feeling right now. Maybe then, he can help her. She doesn't know how, but she'd love it if he could help her. But first, she needs to walk past people she hasn't seen in a while, which is precisely what she's doing right now, which made a certain someone very happy. "Gabby?" Turning her head, Gabby smiled as she saw Herrmann getting up. "Hi Herrmann." Smiling, Herrmann walked over to her and just went to go hug her, which is when the rest of the firehouse realized that she was there and got up. "God, we've missed you." Gabby agreed with Herrmann. "I've missed you too. Just like I've been missing my paychecks from Molly's." Herrmann gulped. "I'll get on that." Gabby agreed.
After which, she watched as Stella made her way over to her. "Hey girl, what are you doing here? I thought Matt said you left to go to Puerto Rico." Gabby agreed with Stella as she proceeded to hug her friend. "I know. And I did…but there's somethings that I need to talk to him about." Gabby said, as she looked around the room. "Casey here?" Stella agreed. "Yeah, he just stays in his back office most of the day. I think he's working on your divorce papers. Wait, are you here to…" Gabby sighed. "Yeah, I don't want to say anything. I need to talk to him. Uhm…" Gabby then thought to herself: 'maybe I should get help getting in Matt's office if he's working on the divorce papers.' After all, it might be awkward. "Listen, do you mind coming with me? I may need a buffer if he's working on our divorce papers." Stella agreed with Gabby as she said that. "Of course, I can be your buffer." Gabby agreed with Stella.
After which, she turned to look at everybody. "Nice seeing you all. I'll be back in a minute." Gabby said, prior to walking away with her best friend. "So, how has Matt been?" Stella looked at Gabby as she said that. "What do you think? He's been in the dumps. You're leaving him Gabby." Gabby sighed. "I know, but I might not be. There's stuff that me and him need to talk about. Stuff that might change everything." Stella agreed with Gabby. "May that include you coming home?" Gabby sighed, as she had no clue what it involved due to the fact that it may even lead to her death. "Stella, I need to talk to Matt before I talk about that, if that's ok." Stella agreed with her best friend as she said that. "How long are you staying this time?" Gabby bit her lip, which led to Stella realizing that she didn't know that yet either. "Ok. Let me just get you to Matt, then you can talk." Gabby agreed with Stella and smiled.
After which, they both proceeded to walk up to Matt's office. "Here, let me get him for you." Gabby agreed, while letting Stella go so that she could knock on Matt's door. "Captain?" Turning his head, Matt looked at Stella; only to see Gabby here. "Gabby…" Gabby took a breath as she looked at Stella. "Uhm, can you go talk to Chief and tell him that Matt needs a minute?" Matt was confused when he heard his wife say that. "I do?" Gabby then turned to look at Matt with this look in her eyes, which just told him that she needed him alone for a minute. "Yeah, Stella; can you give me a minute alone? Ask Chief for me?" Stella agreed. "Of course, guys." Stella smiled as she looked at Gabby. "You do not leave again without a proper goodbye, and one last drink at Molly's!" Gabby agreed with Stella as she said that, while watching her walk away; after which, she took a breath and looked at Matt as this was awkward.
Especially since he had the divorce papers out. "So, you're working on the divorce?" Matt just looked at Gabby as she said that. "Gabby, if this is one last try to get me to go to Puerto Rico, my answer hasn't changed." Gabby shook her head when Matt said that. "Can I sit down? Right now, I need to talk to you about something." Matt agreed with his wife as he let her into his office for the first time since that fight, something which Gabby just realized. "God, this is the first I've been in here…" Matt sighed. "Since that fight. Well, the first one." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that, which led him to getting close to her. "Gabby, I need to just say something before we work on the divorce. I need to do this while I'm still your husband. I'm so sorry for what I said, it was wrong, and I know that." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Yeah, I'm aware of that; but, it's also true due to the fact that I can die." Matt agreed.
After which, he looked at her. "Here, you want to sit down for a minute? Take it easy and relax for a moment?" Gabby shook her head. "I'm actually here to ask you something." Matt agreed with his wife. "What is it Gabby?" Gabby took a breath as she grabbed both of Matt's hand and intertwined their fingers. "I have to go to the doctor today here, and I'm scared. And I'd really appreciate it if my husband was there with me when I go there." Matt got nervous when he heard Gabby say that. "What? Is everything okay?" Gabby took a breath as she walked over to Matt's bed. "Can you come sit with me? I need to show you something." Matt agreed with his wife as he watched her sit down on his bed; after which, he proceeded to make his way over to her so that they could sit together. After all, that's precisely what Gabby needs to do right now: she needs to sit with her husband so that they can talk about this together.
Taking a breath as she and Matt laid down on his bed, Gabby just looked at her husband. "Matt, can I ask you a favor?" Matt agreed. "What is it?" Gabby bit her lip. "Matt, I'm scared right now. Right now, I need to tell you something that's going to make you mad. But I don't need you to be mad at me when I'm scared, I need to have you support me right now." Getting worried, Matt agreed with Gabby. "Hey, what is it?" Gabby just looked at Matt. "Matt, I need you to make that promise to me. Please?" Looking into Gabby's eyes, Matt agreed with her as he moved close to Gabby and placed his hand on her face. After which, he leaned in and kissed the woman he loves softly. "I love you Gabby. I always will." Gabby agreed with Matt. "I know you will, which is probably why the divorce is so hard for you." Matt agreed with his wife. "Yeah, it is. But right now, you're still my wife and that's why I'm here right now." Gabby agreed.
After all, she needs her husband with her. "Ok. So, does that mean I can tell you what's going on?" Matt agreed. "I'd love it if you decided to tell me what's going on so that I can stop worrying." Gabby agreed with Matt. "Well, I'm going to start with this. I want to say that our goodbye round of sex was incredible." Matt laughed as Gabby said that, as it certainly was. "I loved it too. It was such a great way to end things. But now…" That's when Matt thought about something. It's been a month and a half since he and Gabby went for it…which is normally when a woman can tell she's pregnant. "No! You don't think?" Gabby nodded. "I've been nauseous, I've been tired, I can't work as much as I did because of how tired I am. And I've checked my temperature and gone to the doctor. We did a test there, and it says I'm pregnant." Matt was shocked as he heard Gabby say that. "Oh, god." Gabby agreed with Matt.
After all, she was scared. "Matt, I know this isn't what you wanted. I know you don't want me to be pregnant. But, it happened. I still need to get the confirmation that it's a real baby…." Matt sighed, well aware of what his wife was talking about. "You mean, rather than an ectopic pregnancy." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Yeah, just need to be cautious after three years ago." Matt agreed with his wife as she said that. "But…I wanted to tell you ahead of time. I didn't want you to be surprised by this…if I came here and told you that I was pregnant, and it was viable. I wanted you to prepare yourself for it." Matt agreed with Gabby as she said that. "Matt, I know there's a lot of stuff to talk about. And I know this is a big ask. But Matt, I need to know ahead of time…what do I do if it's true and there is a baby in there? I know you're scared but…" Gabby teared up. "Matt, we've tried really hard for this." Matt agreed with her.
After all, they tried really hard and got very intimate with each other a lot. "And right when we separate, I end up pregnant? I know this is crazy…but what this is a sign of faith, that we're not supposed to get divorced, when we could be parents. And I know, this is scary for you. And I know that you never wanted this." Matt agreed, well aware of what he told her. "I mean, just under this situation. That's something I need to clear up. I've always wanted you to be pregnant as my wife, as I know you want to give me a baby bad. But, just not with you having an aneurysm." Gabby agreed with her husband. "But Matt…think of the timing. This happens now, when we're in the midst of working out a divorce, when we weren't even trying to have a baby. I just need to know ahead of time. Say it's a viable baby….would you support me in going through with it?" Matt took a breath as he stared into Gabby's eyes.
After which, he wrapped his arm around her and just held her close. "Be honest, are you really going to get an abortion if the baby is viable?" Gabby bit her lip. "Ok. Can we agree that my answer can't lead to a fight or judgment? I'm freaking out Matt, and I need my husband." Matt agreed. "Of course, just tell me the truth." Gabby sighed as she looked down. "Matt, I don't think so, because of how much we both want this. We've tried for ages, and I already wanted to take the risk in the spring anyways. Now, I'm pregnant when we're supposed to be getting divorced. I'm sorry, I love you Matt; and I know one of the big reasons why we're divorcing is due to the fact that I make big decisions on my own, but this is something that I can't do. I can't do it when I know how much you want to be a dad, how much I want to be a mom, and the odds that I get pregnant were so low. Matt, it happened. And if it's viable…"
Moving his hand to the back of his wife's head, Matt leaned in and just started to take things nice and slow with the woman he loves. The woman who may very well be pregnant with their child. "We'll try and be as safe as we can, and you'll move home. Gabby, I love you and at the end of the day…that should be all that matters. I'm sorry I didn't see that before, but I see it now. I see how much this baby means to you in your eyes, and I promise to be there for you if it's viable. Hell, maybe you can even stay for a while regardless of what happens, and we can try and figure things out. Have a baby regardless." Gabby smiled as she heard Matt say that. "Well, I love that idea. Though, you do realize we can't go right back to normal. We need to talk." Matt agreed with his wife. "Listen, when are you going to the doctor?" Gabby bit her lip. "I was going to ask if you want to come with me." Matt agreed with his wife.
After all, there's nowhere he'd rather be when this is scary. "There's nowhere I'd rather be. I missed you Gabby, and I really mean it when I say that I'm sorry. And if I have to risk loosing you forever to get you back forever, then I'll do it." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Also, I want to celebrate if it's viable. You can worry, you can be cautious. But I want to be happy about it. Matt, I want to make you a dad myself. And this is partially your fault if it's viable." Matt looked at his wife. "You didn't use a condom when you knew I was leaving." Matt laughed as he leaned in and kissed his wife softly. "Got that right, so that means I need to support you if it's viable. And I promise, I'll do just that." Gabby smiled. "Now, you just need to get permission to join me at the hospital." Hearing Gabby say that, Boden smiled as he looked at the married couple once he walked up to Matt's office. "Well, can I ask if you're okay Gabby?"
Turning their heads, Matt, and Gabby both smiled. "Gabby might be pregnant." Boden was shocked when he heard Matt say that. "What? Congratul…" Matt then put his hand out. "We need to check after what happened last time around. And, we're going to keep it quiet this time. And I mean it this time chief. Nobody but the three of us for now." Boden agreed with Matt, as he understood. "So, the hospital?" Matt just looked at his wife. "You want to go today?" Gabby took a breath, before whispering in Matt's ear. "I want to know, as I'm worried about the aneurysm." Matt agreed with his wife. "Chief, can you get me a floater? Me and Gabby need to go check on it today." Boden agreed with Matt as he asked him to get a floater. "I'll get right on that. Get changed so that you can leave right away." Matt agreed with Boden as he watched him walk away, prior to looking at the woman he loves.
After which, he got up and extended his hand. "Come here." Reaching for Matt's hand, Gabby grabbed it and got up, while also noticing that he's still wearing his wedding ring. "Still wearing your wedding band, I see?" Matt agreed. "As long as I'm married, I'm going to wear my wedding band." Stepping close to her husband, Gabby smiled as she wrapped her arms around him and held him close to her, while also rubbing his back and just taking a breath as she whispered to her husband. "Matt, you need to promise me that you help me right now. I know you're scared, because I'm scared too. But remember, I'm the one at risk of dying, not you. If I'm pregnant, I need you to be my supportive husband; not a husband who is mad or scared. Matt, I need you." Hearing the worry in his wife's voice, Matt agreed as he turned his head and pressed his lips to her forehead. "Gabby, I promise."
Looking down into her eyes, Matt just took a breath as he wrapped his arms around her waist; only to lean in and kiss Gabby softly while she placed her hands on his chest. "Matt, I love you; and I'm going to hold you to that." Matt nodded as he wrapped his arms around Gabby, just taking things nice and slow with the woman he loves. "I love you Gabby." Gabby agreed with Matt as they both held each other close in his office for a moment, before letting each other go. After which, Matt turned around to clean up. "Listen, let me clean up and then we can go. Just stay here though, I want you in my sight right now." Gabby agreed with her husband, understanding why that would be the case. "I understand Matt." Matt smiled as he agreed with Gabby, glad she understands why he wants her in his sight; especially since he wants to enjoy this time with her. Whatever time he has left with her.
They were both in the locker room with each other for the first time in a few months, but they weren't talking to each other due to the fact that they were both nervous; nervous over the fact that they didn't know what to say with each other. So, they decided to speak at the same time. "How was your…" "How's your shift…" They both laughed when they started to speak simultaneously. "Ladies first baby." Gabby smiled. "I was just going to ask how you've been since I left." Matt sighed. "Not the best, as it's been lonely. Uhm…I may still be wearing my wedding band, but I went to drinks with a woman last week." Gabby agreed with Matt. "Hey, you thought we were over." Grabbing his shirt from his locker after he finished putting his jeans on, Matt looked at his wife. "Gabby, if you want to come back; then just tell me before we finish the divorce. If you come back, they'll be no divorce. It's that simple. I love you."
Gabby smiled as she watched her husband put his dress shirt on, only to see a scratch on his chest. "Hey, wait a minute." Matt agreed as he watched Gabby get close to him, while she pointed to something on his chest. "Where'd you get that scar?" Matt sighed. "I had my jacket open. My shirt ripped and I hit my chest with the pointy end of my Halligan. It just nipped it but it left a scar." Gabby was surprised to hear that. "When?" Matt sighed. "Over a month ago. It's okay now." Gabby agreed with Matt once more, prior to getting close to him and kissing his chest softly on his scar. "Good. I'm just glad you're okay. I just hope that we'll be okay." Matt agreed as he finished doing up his shirt, prior to wrapping his arm around the woman he loves and tugging her in front of him. "Hey, look at me." Gabby agreed with Matt as she did just that, while he placed his hands on her butt. "You're my wife, and that's all there is to it."
Gabby agreed with Matt as she wrapped her arms around his back. "We're going to be okay, right?" Matt agreed with his wife, as they'll always be okay. "If you can forgive me for the horrible things I said to you, then we can be okay." Gabby agreed with her husband, as she does forgive him; something she showed him by leaning in and kissing him softly. "I love you Matt, and I want to thank you for betting on us." Matt smiled as he moved his hand to the side of her face. "I like the sound of that when I think of you being pregnant. We're a team, which means that we need to bet on us. Bet on getting through this together as a team. Just know that you're not working if you are pregnant. You're going to be here with me, all the time. You aren't going to leave my sight." Gabby smiled, agreeing with her loving husband as she took things slow with him. "I love you Matt, and I want that more than anything."
Matt agreed with his wife. "And the truth is, I want us to have kids somehow. And we have other ways. I promise, if you stay…we'll have kids. But, we need to talk, and I want to talk about what I was going to show you." Gabby looked at her husband. "You mean that pamphlet on adoption?" Matt sighed. "There was another pamphlet you didn't see for surrogacy. It would be our baby, just carried by another woman." Gabby smiled, as she liked the sound of that. "Let's just figure out what the prognosis is here, and whether I'm pregnant with our kid." Matt agreed with Gabby as he grabbed his coat, prior to putting it on. After which, he grabbed his bag and smirked at his beautiful wife. Closing his locker, Matt grabbed Gabby's hand and intertwined their fingers. After which, he started to lead her out of the locker room. "Want to go say goodbye to everybody before we leave? Or do you just want to head to Med?"
Gabby bit her lip as Matt asked her whether she wanted to just go to Med, or whether she wants to say hi to the house first. And honestly, she feels like they should just go check on whether they're pregnant first. "Matt, I want to know. I want to just find out so that we can figure things out. I already waited so that we can do it together, but I'm not ready to wait anymore. I need to go find out whether I'm pregnant." Matt agreed with his wife, understanding that. "Well, then let's go find out whether we're having a baby." Gabby agreed with her husband as he said that, more than ready to find out whether they're having a baby. "You'll be happy if it's true, right?" Matt smiled as he agreed with his wife. "Of course. I'm sorry for what I said once more, by the way." Gabby agreed with her husband, well aware that was the case. "Me too. We can talk later though, okay?" Matt agreed with Gabby.
After all, they need to do that. "I think we need to, as you look like you haven't slept in a while." Gabby sighed. "I haven't slept at all since I found out that I may be pregnant." Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, as that made sense. "Well, then let's go figure out what's going on. Then, we can go home where you can get the rest you need." Gabby agreed with Matt, as she loves the sound of that. "Thanks baby." Matt smiled as he brought her hand up to his lips as he kissed it. "It's no problem, because I love you." Gabby agreed with Matt, well aware that he loves her as they got ready to go to the hospital so that they can determine their new reality. A reality where either (a) Gabby's life was at risk due to the fact that she's now pregnant with their child, or (b) where they need to figure out a way to have a baby...together.
