This was not how the Rangers thought their afternoon would go. Being whisked away to another world and having to make their way back would have been enough of an adventure for one day, but fate- namely in the form of an evil space witch- had other ideas for them. And this other idea just so happened to be savage emotion-attracted monsters laying waste to their hometown, leaving the Rangers all that stood between a horde of black beasts and the fair city they had defended for so long now.
The only thing more surprising than that? The friends they made from the other world had been transported to Earth as a side effect of Rita's spell… and to top it all off, they were now Power Rangers. Another team of six teenagers with attitude who were now battling the beasts like they'd always done back on Remnant.
So, yeah… not how Jason thought their day would go. But this was Angel Grove, for crying out loud. After everything it's been through, an invasion like this would have had to come sooner or later. And speaking of an invasion, it was a reminder of what they needed to do rather than watch the rookies go toe-to-toe with the Grimm like starstruck veterans stunned at the unexpected reinforcements in the form of underdogs. The watching could be left to the civilians whose surprised gazes rested on the new arrivals.
After Jason downed two Lancers with his Blade Blaster and used his Power Sword to decapitate a Beowolf, Ruby whirled her new scythe and sliced a Boarbatusk clean in half. She spun in deadly circles to keep the Grimm from surrounding the new Red Ranger and never dropped her momentum, her wolf helmet glaring at the Beowolves she flawlessly disemboweled.
Jason rolled to her side and fired another volley of crimson laser bolts at the Grimm. "Ruby… how do you feel? Y'know, now that you're an actual freaking Power Ranger?" There was a pause from the caped heroine beside him; a pause that only ended when she cut down a Sabyr that pounced in her direction. "I… I don't know where to start! My body feels like it's moving on my own… YAH! All my senses feel heightened… I'm reacting to things before I know what's going on… HAI! In short, I feel-"
"WOOOOO! THIS IS THE MOST AWESOME FEELING EVER!"
"...yeah. What she said," Ruby clarified, absentmindedly bashing a Beowolf in the face with her scythe's shaft.
Not too far away from her sister, Yang was a monster on a rampage: beating down Grimm with superhuman strength and throwing around beasts twice her size like ragdolls, the dragon face on her helmet matching her power. After managing to break a Beowolf's arm and punch it in the face so fast its head was unrecognizable, Yang grabbed a charging Boarbatusk and tossed the Grimm over her head, raising her arms for an imaginary crowd.
"YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT! WHO ELSE WANTS A PIECE OF ME?!"
A pair of Beowolves rushed Yang from behind, and the only warning she got was a pair of bright slashes reducing the two Grimm to dust. "Whoa there! Ease off the throttle, Yellow Ranger Two!" Trini slid to a halt beside Yang, Power Daggers in hand. "I get that this feels incredible for your first time, but don't get cocky! Why don't I give you a tutoring session? Lesson one…" She threw her knives past Yang's shoulders, striking two Lancers out of the sky before rushing over to retrieve the weapons. "Always keep your eyes on your surroundings! These things are everywhere, remember?"
"Ha!" Yang barked, standing back-to-back with Trini as she raised her fists. "No prob! Bet I can get more than you!"
"You're the wildest girl I've ever met, Xiao Long…"
"Right back atcha, Kwan!"
Clad in her owl-themed blue uniform, Weiss danced across the streets with elegance and grace, swiping and slashing her new saber at the beasts around her. The movements came easily not because she had practiced such techniques her entire life, but because she simply thought of the process. It was like her mind and body had become detached: the former relaying commands the latter executed perfectly. Whatever these coins were, Weiss could have never imagined such a thing.
The last of the Grimm in her vicinity were dispatched swiftly and Weiss struck a gracious stance with her medium-length cape flowing in the breeze behind her. Once she had a moment to catch her breath, she stared at herself in a mixture of wonder and awe. "Whoa… so it's not just spandex?"
"Technically," answered an enlightened voice. "It's more of an extraterrestrial-based, polygenetic armor that bonds at the molecular level, granting its wearer enhanced strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and endurance. Translation: the suit gives you superpowers."
"Hey, I understood that!" she shot back at Billy, who was in the middle of swatting away a Griffon with the Power Lance and stabbing a Creep through the lower jaw. "Well… most of that, but you get the idea!" She spun on her heel, stabbing her saber through a Beowolf's eye before kicking the wounded beast back. "I can't believe this… I'm just a student and I'm dealing with Grimm like a licensed Huntress! Like they're nothing to me!"
"Because they are! Well, when you're dealing with them one at a time," Billy explained, alternating between defense and offense as he somersaulted through the horde. He jerked his head off to the distance, where a demonic howl signaled more Grimm that had abandoned their current tasks of terrorizing civilians redirecting their efforts on the superpowered teens. Weiss pointed her saber at the horde while Billy held his lance in a defensive posture. "Care to learn more about what the Power Coins can do?"
"Gladly," Both Blue Rangers shot for the horde in a blur, meeting the monsters head-on.
A black-clad figure with cat ears on her panther-styled helmet backflipped and somersaulted with inhuman agility, bouncing off walls and slashing at Grimm with a pair of two blades darker than midnight. Blake moved fast and hard, snapping a monster's jaw shut with a kick and blinding another with a sweep of her blade. A black blur darted past the beasts that surrounded her, her blades making several incisions before they could blink… and they all dissolved while Blake was flooded with relief and awe.
"My senses… I-I feel like a Faunus again. But… there's something else…"
"HRAH!" Zack rammed a charging Boarbatusk with his shoulder, stopping Blake from being impaled. An Ursa lumbered over the two Black Rangers, but a quick blast to the face with his Cosmic Cannon caused the bear beast to rear back. Blake rushed forward and swiped rapidly at its exposed stomach… and the Ursa hit the street in the middle of its disintegration.
"You holding out, Blake?"
"Zack, I don't know what's up with these coins, but I feel… amazing!" She reached up and ran a hand across one of the helmet's fake ears. "Was it like this for you and the others?"
"Oh, totally. You guys look good, you know that? Like, really good."
"Well, the suit feels a little snug in some parts…" Blake muttered, glancing over her legs. "Do not tell Yang. But other than that… yes. I think we do look good." A distant snarl snapped Blake back into action and she sprinted off with Zack at her heels, meeting their next target. Not too far away from them, a Griffon was struck by a pink arrow and stumbled to the ground.
"HEEE-YAAAAAH!" A heavy hammer smashed its wing to the street and its wielder flipped over, slamming a pink winged boot into the Griffon's head. Yanking the hammer out, Nora swung the weapon with ease to bash away several more Grimm, all while laughing gleefully. "I! AM! THE! QUEEN!" She roared with each hit, pulverizing skulls and crushing limbs. A Beowolf with a smashed arm howled in pain before a pink arrow shot through its skull, ending its misery. Nora held her hammer high like a champion, whooping in delight. "I AM AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE OF NATURE AND I WILL CRUSH ANYTHING THAT GETS IN MY WAY." She boomed under her pegasus-styled helmet while laughing like a maniac, too caught up in her celebration to notice a swarm of Lancers buzzing towards her.
A volley of pink bolts promptly blasted them out of the sky. "Not if you don't focus!" scolded Kimberly. "I get that you feel on top of the world, Nora, but you're not exactly invincible! Trust me, I speak from experience."
"Aww, don't be such a downer, Kimmy!" Nora hopped over, striking the head of her hammer against the ground. "Invincible or not, the Pink Power Pals won't let any monster get the better of them! Up top!" She eagerly held up a palm, but the veteran Pink Ranger paused. "I did not agree to call us that."
Nora only wiggled her palm, awaiting her response. Rolling her eyes beneath her helmet, Kim slapped her own palm against Nora's before drawing another arrow and launching it at a lunging Beowolf. Nora flew back into the fray and defended her fellow Pink Ranger from converging Grimm, a cacophony of slams and pounds ricocheting across the streets.
"EEYAH! HAI! AH-YAAAH!" Tommy roared as he slashed and kicked at the many Grimm that rushed him. He slashed across a Beowolf's throat and slammed an elbow into a Boarbatusk's snout before a Beringel bellowed and slammed its forearms down. The Green Ranger shot into the air to avoid getting squashed and landed atop its shoulders, burying the Dragon Dagger in its skull. Rolling off when the gorilla-based Grimm hit the street, Tommy braced himself for more attackers as a Beowolf extended its claw…
…when a jade dagger pinned it to a wall. Ren rushed over at quick speeds, retrieving the dagger and slicing the beast's throat in one fluid motion. The snake visage on his helmet bore into the Grimm as he silently cut down the others with swift precision. He stabbed into a skull and vaulted over to kick a Griffon down, slicing open its nape and leaving the soulless monster to vanish. Only black dust and smoke remained once he was finished.
"So…" Tommy began. "Should I be jealous that I only have one dagger while you have two?"
"You never had that problem with Trini."
"Fair point. You okay?"
"I'll manage," Ren assured him. "Besides, I'm not the one we need to worry about." The two Green Rangers stood side-by-side, bracing for the new wave of Grimm. Each of the transformed teens shared ready looks at both their teammates and their otherworldly friends. Team RWBY and their friends were glad to be back in the fight where they belonged… and if the Rangers were honest, they were happy to have the help. It wasn't that long ago they helped each other back on Remnant… so they would help each other here, just like Ozpin and Zordon would have wanted from them.
"Let's see what else these coins can do!" Ruby cried enthusiastically, leading her friends in battle against the next wave of invaders.
…
"WHAAAAAAT?!" The entire palace shook from the startled screech. "RANGERS?! ZORDON TURNED THOSE BLITHERING BRATS INTO POWER RANGERS?! AAAAARRRRRRGGGHHH!" Stray magic bolts burned into the walls, their caster seething with unspeakable rage. "It's not fair! IT'S NOT FAIR! Why do awful things always happen to awful people?!"
"Send me down to Earth, my empress!" Goldar requested. "I will deliver you all of their heads! Do you prefer them inside or outside their helmets?"
"No! Allow me to bring about their deaths, my queen!" Scorpina butted in, pushing the growling general aside. "I will make them beg for their lives and listen to their screams of agony as I-"
"SILENCE, BOTH OF YOU!" Rita snapped. "You two can't even bring me the heads of six Rangers! We're taking a different approach! FINSTER! BABOO! Are they finished yet?!"
"Almost, your evilness!" Finster called. "We're putting the final touches on them as we speak!"
"This 'Grimm' substance is extraordinary!" Baboo exclaimed. "Perhaps this is just what we need to finish the Power Rangers once and for all!" Rita couldn't agree more as she turned back to the telescope and grumbled to herself. "I can't plan, can I? I can't scheme and that is why I fail? Oooh, I'll show you, you sheet-skinned simpleton…"
…
"This is Angel Grove, freakshows!" Trini yelled, shoving a dagger into a Beowolf's chin. "No demons allowed!" Yang seized a flying Griffon by its rear legs and slammed it into the street before hopping atop the beast and hammering it with a flurry of blows, both Yellow Rangers striking fast and hard against the horde. Fighting monsters like the Grimm was exhilarating, Ruby had to admit… but that wasn't their only priority. "Jason! Does this city have some kind of procedure when it comes to monster attacks?!"
The Red Ranger gave his reply in the middle of a slashing and shooting flurry, running two fingers along his sword before landing a devastating strike to a Creep. "AH-YAH! The people seek refuge just like yours do! No large-scale evacuation plans that I know of, mostly just hiding out in buildings, basements… HI-YAH! They wait it out like a storm while we clear out the pests!"
"Speaking of people…" Weiss grunted, impaling a Sabyr before tossing it over her shoulder. "Are they all safe?!" Pausing in her attack, Ruby whirled her head around the street but saw no helpless (and Aura-less, she reminded herself) people in sight. "Alpha! Can you run a scan or something?!"
"AAAAAAAH!" A terrified scream answered instead of the robot's voice, alerting Ruby to a Griffon that had just snagged a girl in its talons. The Huntress-turned-Ranger wasted no time and shot for the airborne Grimm, slicing a King Taijitu in half before locking her scythe around a lamppost and using the momentum of her swing to launch herself skyward. She was on the Grimm in seconds, a sharp slash vertically bisecting the Griffon…
…and leaving the screaming child plummeting to the street.
The world slowed down. Panic and alarm flared up inside Ruby as her entire body and mind became locked on saving the girl from smashing into the pavement. She tucked in her limbs to fall as fast as she could, but she already knew she wasn't going to make it. But still, her mind envisioned herself safely on the street…
The world flashed with red light and Ruby found herself standing in the middle of the road. "Wha-" The rising scream of the falling girl snapped Ruby out of it and she instinctively shot out her arms, snatching the child and sparing her from a gruesome, flattened fate. The girl was shaken with blown-wide eyes and a quivering posture, her eyes staring up at Ruby in a mixture of disbelief and shock while darting between her and Jason.
"Listen to me carefully," Ruby said in her best calming voice. "Are you hurt?"
Too stunned to speak, the girl simply shook her head. Confident with this answer, Ruby threw open the closest door she could find and set the girl down on her quivering legs. "Stay inside and keep your head down! We'll take care of those monsters!"
"Th-th-there… th-there's m-more of you…?"
Ruby looked over her shoulder, where her friends were holding their own against the Grimm. "Huh? Oh! Uh… yeah, it's kind of a temporary thing? I wouldn't get too used to it if I were you… just stay down!" The Red Ranger closed the door and hurried back out onto the street, now allowing herself to think back on the rescue. "Alpha, did you see that?! What happened to me back there?! I was falling and then… poof!"
"I'm not so sure either!" came the surprised reply from her wrist communicator. "It… it looks like you did some kind of short-range teleportation!"
Ruby took in the words. "Wait… teleportation?" Wasn't that her…
"Ay-yi-yi! Something like that should not be possible!" Alpha rambled. "Only Zordon and I can transport you and the other Rangers long distances! None of you should be able to do it independently!"
Ruby smiled beneath her helmet. "Not if you had a little something extra before coming over." She ignored the android's puzzled response as she charged back towards the fray… but instead of running, Ruby imagined herself standing by her friends from both this world and hers. The red light surrounded her form, causing Ruby to blink out of existence…
…and materialize right next to Jason with a crimson flash, startling the Red Ranger. "Huh?! Ruby?! How… where…" The boy shook his head and rapped a gloved knuckle against his helmet. "Never mind! Is the girl okay?!"
"Yep! Is there anybody else that hasn't gotten to safety?"
"Attention all Power Rangers! A small number of civilians have yet to seek shelter!" Alpha reported over the comms. "You must aid them immediately before the Grimm get to them! I'm sending you their locations to your heads-up display now!"
"Copy that, Alpha!" Tommy shouted, slicing another Beowolf down while Ren kicked himself off another to slash a Boarbatusk's face. "It's go time, people!"
"Everyone stay in contact!" Jason ordered. "Help anyone you can find, but watch your backs! These guys just don't play fair!" He elbowed a Beowolf's skull and kicked at another, leaving Ruby to split it in two. The two leaders didn't have to look far for their first stop, as a pair of terrified screams rang out down an alleyway.
"PIIIIIIIIG!"
A Boarbatusk thundered into the alley, its blood-red eyes trained on two victims like an angry bull staring down a red cape. A familiar obese figure scrambled atop a dumpster only to realize too late that the door was open, falling into the container with a loud thud. The Boarbatusk broke into an angry charge, leaving the second lean figure to abandon climbing up onto a fire escape and dove after his partner into the dumpster. With a loud clang, the Grimm rammed the dumpster and sent it- and its screaming passengers- tumbling down the alley until it came to a stop upside-down. Snorting from its black nostrils, the Boarbatusk readied itself for another charge.
"Hey, pork belly!" Jason shouted, firing his Blade Blaster at its thick hide. "Over here! Come get us, bacon breath!" Grunting in annoyance at the connecting crimson bolts, the Boarbatusk tucked inwards and rolled toward the Red Rangers like a bowling ball of death. Jason rolled away while Ruby just twisted to the side, slicing at the ball and earning a pained squeal from the Grimm that unceremoniously tumbled and crashed to the ground. Both Rangers circled the Grimm as it rose with a menacing growl, its tusks ready to skewer either of them. It whirled on Jason, blocking the Power Sword and wrenching the weapon from his grip.
A sharp headbutt rammed the Red Ranger to the ground and Jason rolled backward to avoid four trampling hooves. Ruby swung around, hooking her new scythe around the Grimm's neck and using her newfound strength to fling the Grimm against a wall. The Boarbatusk collapsed and struggled to stand… but Ruby appeared in a flash of red light and planted a boot on its snout. The tip of her scythe vanished into the Grimm's belly and Ruby sliced down the Grimm's length, slicing it open and leaving it to vanish into smoke, its squeals fading in the wind.
Both teens approached the dumpster and Jason pushed the container onto its side… revealing a trembling trash-covered Bulk and Skull underneath. The bullies slowly looked up at their saviors and their jaws all but joined the rest of the scattered trash. "You two alright?" Jason asked them, keeping his voice deep. "Well… as alright as you can be when you pick this as a hiding spot?"
"Uh… uh…" Bulk stammered before Skull nodded so fast his head was going to pop off. "Uh- uh-huh…"
"Well, if you don't want to run into anything like that again," Ruby suggested. "Get inside and don't come out until we tell you!" The teens spun on their heels and charged out of the alley, leaving the baffled Bulk and Skull lying alone. After a long silence, Bulk turned to his partner with a shell-shocked expression. "Did… did you just see… what I think we saw?"
"Tuh… tuh-tuh…" Skull struggled to find the words. "Tuh-tuh-two Red Rangers?! No, th-that's not… there can't be two Red Rangers!"
Bulk gave his friend a slow, insightful glance. "...can there?"
While the two bullies were left to their thoughts, Weiss and Billy cornered a pack of Ursai and Beowolves a few blocks over, shielding a small group of cowering teens from the black beasts of destruction. "Everybody go!" Billy commanded, holding out his lance as if he intended to drive the beasts back with it. "We'll cover you!" A boy was all too eager to oblige, spinning on his heel and taking off at top speed. The sudden movement alerted a Beowolf, who lunged at its fleeing prey before Weiss jumped in the way and thrust her saber at the Grimm. The weapon sank into the Beowolf's stomach and it howled in pain…
…before- much to Weiss' shock- solid ice spread from the impact site and enveloped the Beowolf's blackened body. Limbs locked up and its howl was silenced as its form was encased in a cold tomb, leaving a menacing statue of a monster in its place. Weiss jerked her saber free… and noticed its blade was glowing bright blue, frosty wisps rising from its length.
"Okay… that's new."
Twirling the sword in her left hand, Weiss thrust at another Beowolf and an icy beam shot out from the tip, petrifying the leaping Grimm in midair. Gravity took over and the frozen monster smashed to pieces against the street, leaving only a cowering girl who peeked out from behind her quivering arms. Returning to the well-practiced and fluid movements, Weiss flicked the glowing saber like a master magician with a wand, sending arctic arcs flying into Grimm and freezing them on the spot. Billy set to work on smashing the sculptures, splitting his lance into twin sai blades to beat down those that were still mobile. A Sabyr swiped at Weiss from the right side and she instinctively threw up a hand, allowing a blue beam to burst from her palm and solidify the feline-like Grimm into a shimmering blue statue. With a smirk beneath her helmet and a snap of her fingers, the frozen Grimm cracked and fell apart into chunks lying near her boots.
"Amazing!" Billy exclaimed. "Your connection to the Morphin Grid must have charged you with a sub-zero hypothermal solidification energy that when concentrated properly, can-"
"Put the Grimm on ice!" Weiss finished for him, slashing across an Ursa's chest and leaving a freezing wound that spread through the beast like a virus. A spinning kick to the torso made the statue topple over and shatter before Weiss realized what she had said. "Oh my gods, I just made a pun…"
After a roar snapped the Blue Ranger back to reality, Weiss raised a leg and stomped a heel into the street, instantly covering the asphalt in a slick layer of ice that spread outward. Sprinting Beowolves, Boarbatusks, and Sabyrs immediately lost their footing and fell face-first against the cold surface, a lumbering Goliath could do nothing but grumble as ice spread across its black body, and Billy skated across the ice to finish off stragglers that avoided being frozen while jabbing at them from a short distance. A Creep opened its jaws and leaned for Weiss' head… but the girl didn't even flinch as the massive maw solidified and froze inches away from her face. Taking a moment to admire the petrified Grimm, Weiss rushed off with her heels clacking against the ice.
A few blocks away from the Blue Rangers, two yellow-clad figures were swift-moving blurs. Trini ran across walls and stayed on the move, making herself a hard target for the Grimm. Her partner held her ground and pummeled every Grimm that came at her. Yang was a force of destruction as she tossed Beowolves over her shoulder, landed fierce blows on Boarbatusks hard enough to snap tusks, threw charging beasts into their brethren, and bombarded an Ursa so rapidly it practically exploded from her strikes.
"Ha! I thought these things weren't so tough before, but-"
A Beowolf tackled Yang from behind, pinning her writhing figure to the ground. Dozens of Grimm swarmed her at once, shielding her from sight and causing a spike of fear to rush up Trini's spine once she finished slicing up a King Taijutu. "Yang?!" Griffons dove in from above and a pack of Beowolves rushed, ignorant of a bright glow and a low growl from within the pile…
"RRRAAAAAAAARGH!" A huge explosion sent the Grimm flying and the beasts disintegrated in midair, leaving a smoldering patch of road behind where Yang now stood fiercely. A flaming glow surrounded her sunny suit and the flame decals gave off a bright orange hum before Yang pounded an open palm with her fist, her dragon gauntlets gleaming in the sunlight. More monsters were on her in seconds, but she was ready for them this time.
While Trini cartwheeled and swiped at her attackers with cat-like agility, Yang unleashed a fierce fury-fueled barrage of blows that broke limbs, caved in skulls, and shattered protruding bones. The two Yellow Rangers stood back-to-back, facing down the horde that converged from all sides. Priming her gauntlets, Yang closed her fingers around the triggers. "Trini! DOWN!"
FROOOOOOSH! The second Trini dropped into a split, Yang pirouetted on one foot and unleashed deadly streams of blazing flames from her dragon gauntlets. Every Grimm touched by the flames was set alight and roasted, screeching in pain and agony as the fire ate them alive. After giving a Lancer a faceful of fire that sent the insectoid Grimm shrieking, Yang turned her attention to the rest of the flying Grimm and bombarded Griffons with fireballs, blasting them out of the sky while Trini hopped back to her feet.
"I bet you feel a lot better now!"
"Oh yeah! Much better!" Whirling to face down a charging Ursa, Yang punched out more fireballs to stagger the beast before twisting her body and launching two spinning kicks that generated waves of flame, the heat scorching and consuming the Grimm's black flesh. Once it collapsed onto all fours, Yang rushed up and delivered a hard, flaming uppercut that obliterated its head. The Yellow Ranger wasn't even close to finishing as she landed a jumping kick that knocked a Griffon out of the air, leaving it open for the Power Daggers to pin its wings to the ground. A twirling heel from Trini cracked it across the face and a hard palm caved in the skull before a double slash from her dagger caused the Grimm to explode in yellow light. The two Yellow Rangers watched each others' backs as they utilized speed and strength to fend off the Grimm, keeping their attention off the civilians.
The girls were so caught up in their melee that they failed to notice a pack of Grimm led by a Goliath charging down an opposite street, overturning cars in their wake. Blake cartwheeled and flipped away from vehicles the Grimm chucked at her while Zack caught a car with his bare hands and set it down safely. Turning his Cosmic Cannon on the approaching pack, the Black Ranger fired blast after blast while Blake darted and slashed at several of the smaller Grimm. An armored Ursa Major made its way to the front, a single swipe of its paw knocking Blake's blades away. Its second forelimb snatched Blake by the torso, raising the squirming teen to its evil, ruthless face with an open maw. Blake struggled to find an alternative… until she somehow decided the best course of action was to strike the Ursa Major across the face with an open palm instead of a fist.
She didn't know why she thought of that, nor did she understand why the beast bellowed in pain before dropping Blake to the street. The girl backflipped onto her feet, staring down the now-enraged Grimm that now bore five symmetrical gashes along the side of its bony mask like scars. A perplexed Blake stared at the markings and glanced down at her hand…
…finding a set of violet razor-sharp claws protruding from her glove's fingers.
Surprised, Blake sucked in her breath and failed to suppress her shock when she turned to her other hand, flexing her fingers outward. Tshing! Another set of purple claws popped out akin to concealed blades and her amber eyes widened beneath her helmet as she wiggled her fingers in awe. "Whoa…"
GRAAAAAAGH! The scarred beast was coming back for revenge and slammed its front paws hard enough to crack the street. Blake flipped away in the nick of time, sinking her new claws into the Ursa's arm and using the grip to launch herself over a sweeping forelimb. The Grimm swung that limb back, sending Blake sailing across the street until the girl dug her claws into the asphalt, bringing her to a stop on all fours.
Zack was holding off the Grimm as best as he could, alternating between ax chops and cannon blasts while claws raked harmlessly off his weapon's diamond-hard surface. Blake took in deep breaths, listening and feeling the world around her with heightened senses. It was still a mystery as to why these powers were making her feel like a Faunus again, but there was something that was never there before, never when she was a Faunus for most of her life or a human like she was right now. Blake couldn't place it properly; it felt like she had an additional presence within her, an unseen force guiding and instructing her. Should she trust it? Listen to it?
Maybe this was the coin talking to her. Maybe it wasn't the coin at all. Now wasn't the time to dwell on it. Blake didn't need to think, she needed to act. Not just in mind… but somehow on instinct. She was running at full speed before she could even register it, claws extended and hanging by her sides like a predator closing in for a kill alongside packmates.
Wait… speaking of packmates… was Blake seeing herself sprinting alongside her?
Two shadowy copies covered Blake's sides, mimicking her every movement like mirrors. The only exception was when Blake turned to look at them, the afterimages stared back through empty, void-like faces. Blake didn't dwell on their presence for long, as she and her doubles converged on the Ursa Major towering over a downed Zack and pounced with a feral intent, slashing and scratching at the bellowing beast with murky claws. Blake darted away from the thrashing paws and sliced at its legs while the shadows scrambled over its back and exploited vulnerabilities in the armor, bypassing the Grimm's defenses. Amid its thrashing, Blake noticed the deadly spikes on its back inching towards her… and when she moved to generate a clone, she found herself perched atop the Ursa Major's head with her fingers sinking into its skull, a shadowy copy getting skewered by the spikes below.
"Hmm…"
Black energy seeped out of her focusing form to generate more dark duplicates that swarmed and overwhelmed the Ursa Major like pack hunters working together to take down a large animal. Wrenching the Power Ax out of a Creep's skull, Zack noticed the Ursa Major being singlehandedly (or not?) overpowered by Blake and her shadows. When the Grimm moved to crush the feline-esque Black Ranger into pulp, Blake vanished into shadow and allowed the afterimage to poof into black smoke under the paw. That shadow instantaneously gave way to Blake's dark form and she finished its leaping pounce, digging her claws into the Ursa's eyes to send it into a blind rage. Whenever she was at risk of being hit, Blake swapped places with the mirages as they all wore down the beast…
…until it finally fell with darkened eyes and disintegrated.
"Er…" Zack muttered behind Blake as her claws vanished and she retrieved her blades. "Should I say something about black cats being bad luck or are you still offended by those things?"
There was a short silence from Blake. "I'll… get back to you on that." Faunus usually hated being compared to the animal whose trait they shared… but Blake didn't feel upset about Zack's query at all. It was odd, but that wasn't her priority. "We've got a job to do."
The Black Rangers stood before a looming Goliath and charged as it shambled toward them. Off in the distance, a lone Nevermore was rising into the air and weaving away from pink bolts, a writhing and squirming passenger in its talons. "Rrrrgh! Lemme go, birdbrain! Or I'm gonna make you regret it!" Nora growled, pushing against the claws holding her captive. Down below, Kimberly drew back another arrow… but a Beowolf tackled her to the ground, ruining the Pink Ranger's chance to rescue her teammate and forcing her to keep the beast at bay with her Power Bow.
Nora growled once she realized the Nevermore was ignoring her words. "That's it!" She growled, tiny pink wisps of lightning crackling and sparkling along her suit until they slowly grew and buzzed with intensity. "Now… you've… made… me… MAD!" Thunder split the sky on her final word and her body erupted with an electric pulse, frying the shrieking Nevermore's feathers as its entire form was electrocuted in pink lightning. It plummeted to the street in a smoky heap, the red lights in its eyes going dim.
KROOOM! Nora smashed into the road in a mighty landing pose while the Nevermore crashed several feet behind her, her body sizzling and pulsing with a pink electric aura. Kimberly and the Grimm spun to the newly-formed crater- the Pink Ranger frozen in confusion- before Nora's hammer rematerialized in her free hand like a lightning bolt. The pegasus face on her helmet appeared to glare at the Grimm ferociously as she raised her head and charged for the Grimm with a proud warrior's battle cry.
"YAAAAAAAH!" Every spin of Nora's electrically charged hammer buzzed the very air around her as she smashed and struck the Grimm with the power of a storm, the very impacts reminiscent of thunderclaps. Every monster she hit was either blasted apart from the force or flung back with pink lightning zapping them to the bone. Leaping off a parked car, Nora slammed her hammer against the street to send an electric current throughout the ground, frying dozens of Grimm in seconds while Kimberly wisely jumped to a streetlamp and perched atop it to provide her friend with some high-accurate ranged support. The other Pink Ranger slammed her winged boot into a Beowolf's chest and knocked it into the sky with an upward swing, lightning flying from her fingertips and causing the Grimm to explode like a firework. Charging up the tip of her hammer, Nora flung the weapon in a Goliath's direction and sent a deadly stream of pink bolts surging through the larger Grimm, the beast bellowing and trumpeting in agony amidst thunderous cracks and zaps before collapsing to the road.
Pink lightning trailed off Nora's sprinting form as she dashed across the streets, moving at electrifying speeds and pounding Grimm with the force of a speeding train, vaporizing them on the spot. A scarred Death Stalker staggered back with its pincer and tail held high, its ten eyes trained on the fast-moving feminine figure. Nora pushed her strength into her legs and launched into the air like a missile, a high-pitched scream of rage leaving her arcing form as the lightning concentrated outward… forming an image of electric pegasus wings that spread open, marking Nora as an angel of death sent from the heavens to smite her foes.
KRABAM! Her electrified hammer smashed down on the Death Stalker with a bright shockwave, forcing Kimberly to shield her eyes… until it faded, revealing a panting Nora and rising black smoke where the scorpion-like monster once stood. Leaping down from her perch, Kimberly chuckled joyously and raised her hand. "I am so jealous that Zordon didn't give me that much flair." Nora giggled like a schoolgirl before giving her fellow Pink Ranger a high-five.
BZZT! "OW!"
"Oops! Sorry! Still getting the hang of this!"
Kimberly shook her aching hand before both girls turned their attention back to the Grimm, quickly forgiving the minor incident. Just down the street from them, two green-clad figures were ushering another group of people inside… but none of the Grimm were going down without a fight. A Beowolf grabbed Tommy's dagger arm and swiped the Green Ranger aside, causing him to hit a wall. "Ugh… come on, Tommy… there's only so many Grimm Rita had to bring here…"
Another green blur shot between him and the growling Beowolf, leaving an open wound with emerald hues behind. Ren darted through the remainder of the pack, his daggers nicking and scratching the Grimm until he came to a stop in front of Tommy. Ignoring their tiny wounds, the Grimm growled menacingly and staggered forth. "I think you only made them mad," Tommy commented, taking a few steps forward… until Ren placed a hand over the Green Ranger's chest.
"Wait for it."
"Huh? Wait for what?"
The Beowolf lurched in place and doubled over with a low moan, the jade mark from Ren's knives slowly spreading and overtaking the blackness. The Beowolf's grunts and groans turned to desperate choking and its limbs gave out, the Grimm succumbing to the jade venom. Its brethren soon followed as they slowly and painfully perished from the poison seeping through each of their bodies, Lancers dropping like flies as they were claimed in midair. The monsters all hit the road before vanishing into dust, leaving nothing but an empty street behind.
Tommy whistled. "Neat trick, Ren."
"Thank you…" His voice was troubled despite the appreciation he spoke. "Tommy… I don't know how, but… somehow, I knew my daggers would have that effect. And I've only had them and this Power Coin for… what is it, not even a half hour? Why would I know something I've never even tried?"
"That's a good question," Tommy replied. "That's one we all asked when we became Rangers. Alpha, care to give him the details?"
"Of course, Tommy! Ren, your Power Coin not only enhances your body but your mind as well! Everything you need to know about being a Power Ranger is instantly implanted into your brain by the Morphin Grid! Your weapons, your skills, and lots more! Now, I know that may sound like a little too much since you're used to learning information in controlled environments such as classrooms, but… what is it the Earthlings say? Ah, yes! You are learning on the job!"
"That sounds… lazy," Ren commented. "All that effort without working towards it?"
"Oh, not quite," Tommy replied with a friendly pat on the shoulder, Dragon Dagger in hand. "You work with the effort to get more experience! Now come on, let's sink those snake teeth of yours into something else!"
As time went on, Ruby and her friends began to think of the invasion as more of a clean-up effort rather than defending the city against evil extradimensional monsters. Their new weapons were a cinch to work with: resembling the old yet something completely new at the same time. And while their new powers weren't exactly the Semblances they were used to, they proved adept in mastering them quickly. Ruby slashed through a pack of Grimm in a frenzy and impaled a Beowolf, slamming the monster onto the street… until she was blindsided by another Beowolf that pinned her against a car. The wolf-themed Red Ranger struggled to keep the beast's jaws away from her until she managed to land a jab in its eye.
"HA! HAI! EEE-YAH!" Ruby landed a flurry of punches and quick kicks, stunning the beast until a strong kick knocked it to the ground. "Yeah, that's right! And don't you try that aga-" The girl paused when she finally perceived what she had just done, finding herself locked in a ready stance with spread legs and balled fists. "Wait, wha-"
"All right, Rubes!" Yang cheered from the distance. "Way to give it to 'em!"
"Um, I hate to spoil the moment…" Billy interrupted, kicking a Sabyr in the face while he pole-vaulted away from a snarling Beowolf. "But I wouldn't get used to her fighting that good. I speak from experience."
"Yeah! I'm terrible at hand-to-hand!" Ruby echoed, staring at her fists in disbelief. "What the heck happened?!" Jason somersaulted over a car and slashed a Creep in the face. "AI-YAH! Short version: your powers have turned you into a skilled fighter, regardless of how you are unmorphed! Billy wouldn't hurt a fly, but look at him now!"
"Oh," Both Ruby and Yang uttered with disappointment in their tones, the latter crossing her arms. "Is that cheating? That sounds like cheating."
"A lot of things are uploaded to your brain," Trini explained while she cut down Griffons in a twirling aerial assault. Kimberly cracked her bow across a monster's jaws before introducing her heel to its face and shooting another Grimm point-blank. "Yeah, it's weird…" she agreed with her fellow Ranger. "...but they help!"
Weiss twirled around a street sign and smacked her heel into an Ursa's face, swiping her saber upward to conjure an icy barrier. She cartwheeled to the side when the Ursa retaliated, shattering it to bits with a snarl. She braced herself for the beast's next approach with a ready stance…
…until violet laser bolts struck it in the face and sent it staggering back, leaving it vulnerable to a flying Nora that struck the Grimm like an electric missile, knocking the Ursa off its feet. "So, Zack…" Blake's voice called out and everyone turned to see the feline-eared Black Ranger holding a smoking black blaster in her grip. "At what point were you gelling to tell me that Earth's weapons didn't share melee and ranged capabilities?"
"I thought it was obvious!" came the exaggerated response.
"Well, not enough for me!"
The snarls of a Beowolf reached Ruby's ears… and her hand flew down to a holster, revealing a red ray gun that blasted out the Grimm's eye with a single crimson bolt. The Grimm fell at Ruby's feet but she was too occupied with her new firearm to pay attention to it. "Oookey-dokey… a little different than what I'm used to, but I can work with it!" She turned the blaster on some Lancers, shooting them out of the sky before sending her scythe through some more Beowolves, warping around the street to make hasty escapes or catch other foes by surprise.
Weiss stabbed her saber through a Creep's forehead and blasted a blue bolt through a Beowolf's skull, wrenching her weapon free and swinging a horizontal arc that froze multiple Grimm where they stood. Yang crashed down in a fiery shockwave, destroying them on the spot. With them out of the way, she whipped out a yellow blaster and fired sunshine-colored lasers into the sky, nicking a Griffon by the wing and making it drop in altitude. Blake was on that Grimm in seconds, delivering a flurry of claw strikes until a cross slash finished it off. Nora and Ren fired pink and green lasers at any Grimm too far away… which suffered an easy fate compared to those they battled up close. Nora grabbed a Beowolf by the arms and sent a powerful electric current into its form until it exploded while Ren slashed a Creep's tail and a Goliath's leg, both Grimm succumbing to the green poison that followed.
An army's strength was contained within the twelve teens, more than enough to match the actual army that was dwindling in number. Dozens of Grimm fell to a single Power Ranger, much to the shock and delight of hiding citizens and to the hope and confidence within the imprisoned sage and his automated assistant. At this rate, with both teams combining their strengths and defending their weaknesses, the battle was as good as won.
…
Only one witness was left displeased by the outcome.
"Finster!" Rita snarled, her grip tight around her staff. "Get me some good news already! Not only are there more of those pesky Power Pests, but they're also winning! You and Baboo had better be done in there!"
"Excellent timing, your vileness!" replied the alchemist. "The Liquid Grimm and the Monster-Matic have collaborated perfectly! The new batch is ready… as well as your secret weapons."
"Then send them down! NOW!"
"Right away, Empress Rita!"
The sorceress returned to the telescope and peered through, eagerly awaiting their arrival. In the meantime, she'd be forced to endure watching those anxiety-filled adolescents eradicate such wonderful and chaotic engines of destruction. It would all be worth it in the end, Rita told herself… Soon, she'd bear witness to the end of the Power Rangers and those other irritating infants.
…
"Alright, guys, this looks like the last of 'em!" Tommy called as everyone stood firm and proud against the final handfuls of Grimm. Yang chuckled at how cautious and defensive the creatures of darkness had become. "Does anybody else think they look scared?"
"If they were capable of emotion, I would agree," Ren replied. "But a Grimm is a Grimm. These soulless monsters need to be destroyed."
"And we've got just the thing for that!" Trini added. "Time to break out the Power Blaster!"
"Rangers!" Jason commanded with a clenched fist. "Bring 'em together!" Each of his friends readied their weapons- glowing with pure power as they touched- before throwing them into the sky.
"POWER AXE!"
"POWER BOW!"
"POWER LANCE!"
"POWER DAGGERS!"
"POWER SWORD!"
Kim's bow nestled into the locking mechanism in Zack's axe. Both halves of Billy's lance and Trini's dagger attached beneath the bow, forming four additional cannons with two on each side of the Cosmic Cannon's main barrel. Finally, Jason attached his sword on the top of the weapon to add the final piece. The five core Rangers caught the combination, aiming it at the snarling, hissing Grimm. Ruby and her friends waited for them to pull the trigger…
…but she noticed Tommy expectantly staring at them.
"Well? You guys wanna get in on this?"
Ruby was taken aback. "Wait… really?"
"Yeah, really!" Kim echoed. "No way we're leaving you guys out of the best part!"
"That does sound more efficient…" Weiss began before Yang pushed her aside with glee. "And more fun! Let's do it, Rubes!"
Warmth filled Ruby's heart and her eyes glinted courageously. "Alright then! Everyone, let's see what our new weapons can do!" They were all out in a flash and their owner tossed them skyward, calling them out by name.
"SERPENT FANGS!"
"THUNDER HAMMER!"
"FLAMING FISTS!"
"MIDNIGHT BLADES!"
"SNOW SABER!"
"WOLF'S CLAW!"
Ruby's scythe straightened its blade and connected down the length of Nora's hammer, lining up perfectly with the head that was now angled forward like a cannon. Weiss' sword attached from underneath and Yang's gauntlets fused with Blake's blades, both of them landing on the sides. Lastly, Ren's daggers connected on the top and bottom of the combination, forming a single cylindrical barrel rather than multiple ones. Both weapon fusions charged up with colored energy, the Grimm snarling in warning at the sight. A low hum slowly rose in pitch and the colors swirled together… before the Red Rangers rested their fingers on the triggers.
"POWER RANGERS, FIRE!"
SHA-BLAAAAAM! Five colored lasers erupted from the Power Blaster while a single multicolored beam burst from its Remnant equivalent. They connected with their targets and the Grimm were swallowed up in a brilliant explosion of prismatic light. The ensuing blast was so powerful it could be seen throughout all of Angel Grove. The lights faded into dark smoke that rose high into the air…
…and nothing was left when it faded.
"WOO-HOO! YEAH! WE DID IT!" Both teams erupted in a celebratory cheer, raising their fists and hopping in place excitedly. Ruby clasped Jason's hand in her own and Yang caught Trini off-guard by wrapping her in a rib-crushing hug. Billy and Weiss pumped their fists victoriously until the female Blue Ranger caught herself and dusted off her skirt, regaining her composure. Zack enthusiastically held up a hand in Blake's direction… and the girl slapped her palm against it after a brief shrug. Tommy and Ren congratulated each other while Nora almost tackled Kim to the ground until Kim returned the hug.
"You guys were amazing out there!" Zack cheered. "And those suits? Wow, and I thought our looks on Remnant were cool!"
"I guess Zordon didn't have any more dinosaurs on hand!" Billy laughed. "Not that I'm complaining."
"Yeah, not only do we look awesome," Yang added with a delighted laugh. "But we feel awesome, too!" She flexed a bicep, which caught Nora's attention and she snagged the limb, taking Yang by surprise as the Pink Ranger looked between herself and her friend. "What?! Why are you so much more buff than me?! I'm the one with the thunder thighs here! Me!"
"Ah… it's good to know we're not useless after all," Ruby sighed, looking over her Ranger suit before Jason placed a hand on her shoulder. "Ruby… you and your friends are a lot of things, but 'useless' has never and will never be one of them!"
"Crazy is one of them, though!" Trini piped up, earning her a punch in the arm from Yang. Everybody continued to laugh and celebrate their victory, filling Ruby's heart with hope. Being able to witness other heroes her age who shared the same beliefs she did was one thing, but being friends with them was enough to fill the Huntress-to-be with confidence. For once, Ruby imagined herself and her team saving their world from the Grimm just like how the Power Rangers kept theirs safe from Rita. Maybe one day, Team RWBY wouldn't just save Remnant from constant Grimm attacks… perhaps they could end the threat for good so that humanity- their humanity- didn't have to fear them any longer. It would be long and hard like most adventures were, but Ruby didn't doubt that they would-
Deet deet deet-deet deet-deet! Deet deet deet-deet deet-deet!
"Wait, wait, quiet!" Ruby called out, her voice and the repetitive beeping noise silencing everyone. "What's that sound?" Yang glanced down at her wrist and saw her communicator was flashing. "Huh. That's kinda catchy…"
Zack just shrugged dismissively. "Eh, it's probably Zordon wanting to congratulate us. He'll be all like…" The Black Ranger cleared his throat before dropping his voice to a booming, low tone. "'Well done, Rangers. Once again, you have repelled Rita's forces and saved the planet. Because of your efforts, the people of Earth have been spared.'"
His friends giggled at the impression and Jason raised his arm, tapping his communicator. "We better not keep him waiting, guys. Zordon, what-"
"AYE-YI-YI-YI-YI-YI-YI! DANGER! DANGER!" Everybody flinched from the noise. "WE'LL ALL BE DESTROYED! DANGER! DANGER!"
"Alpha?!" Tommy shouted. "What is it?! What's going on?!"
"Rangers! Remain vigilant!" Zordon ordered. "We have just detected a massive spike in Grimm activity headed your way! Brace yourselves!"
"Aw, no!" moaned Zack. "There's more?!" Trini clutched her helmet with a groan. "Ugh, do we ever catch a break?!" Kim was the one to speak up next. "Where are they, Zordon? Where are they coming-"
Boom…
"...from…"
Boom… Boom… Boom…
The street shook with a slight vibration. Undamaged cars bounced on their springs and windows wobbled from the tremors. Everyone went still and silent as they carefully turned around to see an empty road, the ground vibrating under their feet. Ren immediately dropped to the ground, placing a hand on the asphalt.
"Ren… do you…" Billy caught himself. "Do any of you have a hint as to what's coming? Even the slightest?" Yang brought up her fists and Nora clenched her hammer tightly while Weiss slowly shook her head. "This isn't a Goliath. Not enough tremors."
"Maybe this is the big one?" Trini guessed, but Blake quickly shot her down. "No, we'd see it coming from miles away. Plus, they're too soft."
"Steady, everybody…" Ruby whispered, her scythe held high. "Whatever comes… be ready for anything."
SHREEEAAARGH! A startled yelp left Ruby's throat and she spun to a rooftop… where a humanoid figure with sharp bony fingernails and a menacing masked face with burning red eyes stood perched atop the roof. Wicked knife-like teeth bared as a demonic hiss slipped past them. More shapes crawled out of hiding spots: climbing to rooftop edges, traversing over walls, emerging from manhole covers, and slinking out of corners Several of the creatures leaped down and pounced down fire escapes, hissing and snarling as their eyes landed on the teens.
"Ugh, I remember these things," Kim shuddered. "Rita's hybrid abominations."
"The Grimm Putties," Zack muttered. "What are these freaks doing here?"
"I don't care how they got here," Yang growled, pumping her fists. "I only care about how I'm gonna kick their black butts so hard they'll fly all the way back to Remnant!"
Boom… Boom… Boom… The tremors didn't stop and the Grimm Putties didn't make a move. The hybrids only eyed the teens like animals in a cage surveying potential prey. They chittered and warbled to themselves, stalking yet not striking. It was an intense sight, but the teens could think of only one explanation for their hesitation.
They were waiting for something.
A yellow car with black lines on the hood bounced with the quaking street, which intensified in force as the footsteps drew closer. The ground shook harder and the footsteps grew louder, a shadow passing around the corner…
SMASH! A gigantic black three-toed foot pulverized the yellow-and-black car to a metal pulp, the wailing alarm quickly dying out into nothingness while a tire rolled a short distance before falling flat on the road. White bony armor covered a pair of strong, murky legs while sharp spikes jutted out from a long, hefty tail. More white plates covered an abyssal torso that had two little arms protruding out, the limbs donned with two tiny clawed fingers. A broad neck supported a massive head covered in skull-like bone armor, a huge jaw filled with vicious white teeth, and eyes burning an evil crimson.
Grrrrrr…. A low, rumbling growl echoed through the silence as everyone went wide-eyed at the dominating new arrival: a Grimm taking the form of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, twice as large as the original animal. The beast glared at the frozen Rangers, all of them unable to take their eyes off the sight. The monster's mouth hung open to display its twin rows of teeth that appeared hard enough to crush steel.
Zack carefully leaned closer to his friends, his voice shrunken to a whisper. "Maybe it won't see us if we don't move…"
"Actually…" Billy softly corrected. "There are some ongoing debates about the accuracy of a T-Rex's vision-"
"Billy," Jason hissed as silently as one possibly could. "Shut. Up."
The theropod-like Grimm drew back its head, inhaling deeply…
RRROOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRR!
Every window in the vicinity exploded in a shower of glass and a sudden gust of wind blasted everyone back, their cries drowned out by the deafening bellow that erupted from the creature's maw. Ruby's scythe dug into the road, dragging her to a stop before she grabbed Yang by the wrist as she flew past. Cars tumbled down the street and lamps were ripped from their posts, the cowering civilians covering their ears from inside the buildings. The Rangers all collapsed either on shaky legs or their backs in the middle of an intersection, groaning from the sonic assault.
"Urgh… that used to be my thing," Jason muttered, the Power Sword serving as a makeshift crutch for him to stand. Billy clutched his head while Weiss helped him to his feet… before a loud rumbling drew their attention to an empty truck resting on the right. Something was approaching, and it was coming fast.
With a loud crash, a second Grimm sent the massive vehicle careening into the sky and slid to a halt, four hooves breaking up the street. A thick and rotund body was covered in defensive bone armor while a round frill shielded its neck from attack, three sharp horns jutting out of its face. The beast bellowed, revealing sharp teeth beneath its beak as the truck went up in a fiery cloud behind it.
A demonic predatory growl made Yang and Trini spin around. Perched on the roofs above was a large feline-like Grimm bigger than any Sabyr, its sharp fangs glinting as it growled. Parallel to its position, a pair of dark talons sank into the road and a fourth creature spread open black leathery wings with translucent red membranes, its crest weaponized into a sharp point while dozens of teeth littered its beaky mouth.
Lastly, a large elephant-like Grimm that dwarfed the Goliaths lumbered into view, its curved tusks ready to smash and impale while its hooves could trample anyone caught underfoot. Each of them was larger than a standard Grimm, looming around the teens while the Grimm Putties garbled and groaned with malicious intent. As everyone braced themselves, Ruby and her friends felt a flash of nervousness.
"Uh… J-Jason? I-I think it's time to escalate things!"
"Relax, Ruby…" The veteran Red Ranger reassured her with a confident tone. "We've got just the thing…"
