Chapter 19: Heritage
November 6th. 9:00 AM
"Maya, Mario. It's good to see you two are finally back at school," Lelouch greeted the twins as they entered through Ashford Academy's front gate.
"It's been a while… hasn't it?" Mario returned the greeting with his sister hiding behind his back, "Why'd you call us here anyway?"
"Didn't I already tell you over the phone?"
"Yeah, you did. But I'm still confused."
Kallen close to Lelouch's side, listening to the conversation intently, while taking small glances at Maya, who was holding the back of her brother school jacket tightly, "I want to know what happened that day…"
"The Masquerade party?" Mario asked, "Maya's still shook about what happened that day, but she's able to speak now. It's certainly better than how she was before."
Kallen gently walked past the boy, and gently shook his sister, "Hey, Maya, how are you?" upon feeling her touch, the girl buried her face into Mario's back, "Maya… don't you remember me? It's Kallen."
This seemed to get a reaction of her, "Kallen?" Maya finally looked up, "Oh! It's Kallen! How's it going?"
Lelouch looked at Mario with a raised eyebrow, "Well… it's a bit more complicated than that," the black-haired boy said while trying to take a step forward, only to be stopped by his sister, who firmly grasped his arm, "See? She's never like this."
The Prince continued to watch as Kallen and Maya chatted as if everything was normal, "Let's go to the clubhouse. We'll be unbothered there."
With that, the group moved to the Ashford Clubhouse, where they sat in the living room directly across from each other, with Kallen and Lelouch placing two chairs next to each other, taking a seat there, while the Disel siblings sat on the couch together. In between them, sat a small round table. "Where did Milly take Nunally by the way?" Kallen asked the Prince as he put a laptop on the table.
"I'm pretty sure they went to Kyoto for the week." he replied
"Really? What for?"
"Well… Milly's got some Ashford business to attend to there. Though, when I told her Nunally always wanted to go to Kyoto, she practically dragged her out of the wheelchair."
"Aren't you worried?"
"Yeah, but Sayoko insisted on going with them, so I can only hope that she keeps them out of trouble. Of course, I also gave Milly Jeremiah's number in case they needed help."
"Oh really? That's nice of you." Kallen responded sarcastically, knowing that the Prince probably meant he's having the Margrave keep an eye on them.
Regardless, they had things to do.
"Now, could you please tell me what happened that day, Maya?" Lelouch asked the girl as she clung to her brother.
It took a few deep breaths, but Maya finally began, "Well… my memories a bit spotty, but I remember running to the computer science classroom while Mario held Lewis off. Once I arrived there, I got onto the teacher's computer, which was Lewis' at the time, and tried to delete any files that related to the Knightmare override protocol." she then stopped, "but… but… that's where my memory gets spotty," tears started to well in her eyes as she choked on her next words, "I remember… Henry barging into the room, with Mario under his arm… everything was a blur after that."
She began to cry into her brother's shoulder, "What did he do?" Kallen leaned forward.
"He didn't do anything… at least… not that I can remember… it was just so scary, I felt like I was being suffocated by the fear…" the black-haired girl replied between sniffles, "Though… I remember seeing this red bird-like symbol…"
The red head's eyes widened, "Bird-like?" she then pulled out a pen and paper from under the table; this was where Nunally kept her school supplies most of the time. She probably wouldn't mind if Kallen borrowed some, "Could you draw it?"
Maya hesitantly left her brother's side, taking up the pen in the process, before shakily drawing a Geass symbol on the paper, "T-there… that's it…" she dropped the pen abruptly, before returning to her brother, where he comforted her with a shoulder rub.
Kallen picked up the paper, "This is the worst thing that could've happened…" her grip on the paper tightened, "Geass… "
"Kallen," Lelouch called, "Do you know that symbol?"
"I have to tell him about Geass somehow… but not right now… he won't believe me without proof… will he?" the red head turned to the boy, "Well… this symbol belongs to the religious group known as Eden Vital. Not many people actually know about them due to the secrecy surrounding their activities, but from what I've heard, they study some sort of phenomena known as Geass."
It might've been indirect, but Kallen still told Lelouch about Geass. Whether he believed her or not was irrelevant at this stage. "And these people have infiltrated the Britannian Government?" he questioned.
Of course, Lelouch shouldn't be interested in Geass. To him, the people at Eden Vital are interfering in his objective, which meant they had to be destroyed. That's what Kallen was banking on. "Yes."
"And this… Geass… what is it?" then again, shouldn't, is a very flimsy statement.
"It's the manifestation of supernatural powers in someone's eye." Kallen pointed at the bird-like symbol, "If someone has a Geass, this will appear in one of their eyes. Either left or right."
Lelouch was skeptical, obviously. Who would believe in such a thing as supernatural powers? Especially without seeing any proof. But that's the thing Kallen didn't think about. The proof was sitting right in front of them. Maya had been affected by a Geass; her new-found clinginess to her brother was an after effect of such a thing.
"These powers…" the Prince began studying the sister, "What are they?"
Kallen shrugged, "They can range from mental attacks, to overriding your senses."
That's when Mario, for the first time in this conversation, spoke, "You sure know a lot about this… Geass. Where'd you get all this information from?"
It was a good question. Thankful, Kallen already had an explanation prepared, "My father told me about them. Of course, I never believed the stories of them having powers, but…" she looked at Maya, "Now I can't deny it."
Again, this was another thing Lelouch couldn't disprove by asking Naoto. But, it was a wonder how many times she could use such an excuse in the future. Obviously, Kallen did feel guilty for lying to Lelouch right now, but there's no way he'd believe her if she told him she was a time-traveler.
"I see… then Casmir's powers could be anything?" the Prince leaned back in his seat, "While we should prepare for that case… I say we should also prepare for the case that he just used some type of gas, maybe even a hallucinogen. Perhaps we should prepare an antitoxin." he looked at Maya, "Can you do that?"
"It's… not my specialty. Why don't we just have Henry do this?"
"No. I don't want to include him or anyone else in Ashford with these plans."
"Then why us?" Mario asked
"That's simple. Aren't you mad? Mad that the teacher hurt you sister?" Lelouch asked, but didn't wait for an answer, "This way, you'll be able to get your revenge."
Maya looked between her brother and Lelouch, before letting out a hearty laugh, "Aw! Are you worried about me?" she began poking Mario's cheek, "That's so sweet! But you don't have to worry, after all, I can take care of myself." then, her attention turned to Kallen, "Come on Kally! Let's go make that anti-toxin!"
"What happened?" Lelouch watched as Maya dragged the red head out of her chair, and out of the clubhouse, "She's suddenly back to normal? How odd…"
"Wait! But we don't even know what to make! And what's with that nickname!?" Kallen pleaded as she was dragged toward the front door.
"I'm sure we'll figure it out. Let's start by making the basic counters… like against mustard gas, or methane…"
"I thought you said this wasn't your specialty!"
"Oh, come on, Kally. This is all basic stuff you should've learned in class."
"Again, with the nickname!"
"What? I think it's cute." Maya then poked Kallen's side, "And maybe if I say it enough, Lelouch'll call you by it."
No. Maya was even better than okay. She was super energetic, almost scaring Kallen with how she was acting, "This is troublesome. Judging from how Maya described the events, I think I've narrowed his Geass down to a couple of vague possibilities." Kallen continued to allow the black haired girl to drag her toward the science building, "1. It's similar to Lelouch's… wait, no… it can't be, as Maya still has a relatively clear memory of the events that occurred. In that case, it probably has something to do with overriding the senses." they finally made it to the science classroom, where Maya rushed around, grabbing several beakers and a centrifuge.
"Okay Kally, I need you to grab these ingredients from the store!" she handed the red head a piece of paper with several items written down on it, "By the time you return, I'll have everything set up!"
Kallen soon left the school premise, the thought of Casmir's Geass still on her mind, "Perhaps it has something to do with fear? Maya mentioned something about being suffocated by the fear… so perhaps his Geass is to make someone submit by fear?" she entered a large department store, and explored the aisles with a shopping cart, "No… it that was it, then he would've used it on Mr. Burns to force him into taking a vacation… it has to be something else…" she landed on the cleaning aisle, where she grabbed a jug of bleach and a few bottles of dish soap. After 15 minutes of shopping, Kallen finished grabbing the items she needed, and headed toward the registers. There, she put the items on the conveyor belt, and stood by the register, as the cashier scanned her items, "Should I really be buying everything in one place?"
The employee gave questioning looks with each item he scanned, which made the red head worry slightly, "um… I'm doing some cleaning…" she elaborated
However, the cashier responded, "you don't have to explain yourself. Believe me, we don't care." Kallen watched in awkward silence as the cashier put the products into several plastic bags, "Are you paying with cash or card?"
Just as she was about to pull out her credit card, she thought it'd be better if her step-mother or father didn't see such a purchase, "Cash…"
Meanwhile, in a factory somewhere near Kyoto, "And this is where the magic happens," Milly's tour guide came to a stop in front of a Knightmare production sector, "Here's where we create original Japanese Knightmare's that the JLF use to fend off Britannia. It's pretty nice, right?"
The blonde watched as a Glasgow was taxied into a mechanical bay, where several mechanics rushed out and began working on it, "I see… and who exactly is the head of your R&D department. Her name's Rakshata Chawla if I'm not mistaken, correct?"
"Ah yes, Ms. Chawla has returned to India to oversee the production of her latest and greatest creation; the Guren ." the tour guide explained with a bright smile
"Um… are you sure it's okay for you to talk about that so openly?" Milly questioned as they continued further into the complex.
"Of course! We've always wanted the great Ashford Industries to return to the Knightmare market."
"Even though our Knightmare's are what caused Japan to be… conquered?"
"Yes," they arrived in front of a red Knightmare, "Let me tell you something, Ms. Ashford. Your father and Ms. Einstein were great inspirations to the Knightmare market, and while their creations were used to conquer various lands; it's also thanks to their creations, that we're able to fight back." she then turned to the red Knightmare, "And this, is a symbol of that. The Guren Type-01."
"So… this is the Guren?" Milly asked, "Will the look anything like this one?"
"Depends on how well the radiant wave surger comes along. If push comes to shove, we may have to get rid of one of the arms completely to make room for the weapon. Other than that, they should be almost identical."
The blonde scanned the machine up and down, "Is it functional?"
"Currently… yes. Though, it's a bit more complicated than that." the tour guide pointed at the machine's hips, "You see, we're missing a majority of the weapons, such as the MVS fork knife, which is currently in development right now" she then moved to the machine's body, "We're also missing some crucial interface options, and we're still doing some test on the grenade launcher."
"I thought you said this thing's functional?" Milly questioned
"Well… it is… if I wanted to pilot it around the factory, maybe lift a few crates, I could. But as for full combat effectiveness…"
"It's lacking?"
The tour guide sighed, "For lack of a better word… yes." she then looked at the blonde intently, "That's why we need the Ashford's help. If you allow us to use the old Knightmare production facilities, then we'll be able to speed up development on some real Knightmare's. What do you say?"
Milly looked at the Guren, then back to her tour guide, "I'll… think about it. After all, this is a big step for me."
"Ah, that's okay. The Kyoto group can wait; though, we hope to hear a positive response in the future."
Milly sat in the backseat of a black car, on her way back to the hotel she had rented for herself and Nunally, "What am I doing?" she watched as the settlement passed in the background, "It's all because of Clovis' stupid play. It shouldn't've gotten to my head like that. Now, I'm trying to restart Ashford Industry's. Why? Because I feel guilty about something I wasn't even responsible for."
Suddenly, her phone began to buzz; it was a call from Nunally, "Hello~" she answered in her classic Milly tone, "Did you miss me already?"
"Um… I just wanted to know how your meetings went today," the Princess responded in a meek tone.
"Oh? They went alright. About as boring as they've always been." the blonde responded casually, "Hey, do you want to go somewhere today? Why not the mall? Then we could get some souvenirs for the rest of the council."
"I would love that!" Nunally responded, "Why don't we go to the big one?"
"You mean the one in Osaka?"
"Yeah! I heard they get all sorts of stuff there!"
Milly felt a genuine smile form on her face, "This is who Lelouch fights for. I might make fun of him for how much he dotes on her, but she's what keeps him stable." she then thought about what she said to Kallen the other day, "I told her not to bring their conflict to Ashford, and yet look at what I'm doing… maybe I should talk to Lelouch about this…"
"Milly?" Nunally's sweet voice called, "Are you still there?"
"Of course, I'm not going anywhere." the blonde responded, "Tell Sayoko to get you changed, then wait out front. I'll come by with the car to pick you up."
"Yay! I wonder what I should get Lelouch…" she heard the Princess mutter while hanging up.
Milly smiled upon hearing those words, "Life's too short to be so serious…"
"It's about time! What took you so long, Kally?" Maya questioned as the red head carried several heavy bags into the classroom.
"You try carrying these then!" Kallen retorted while slamming the bags on the table, "Now, what're we doing first?"
Maya picked up her laptop nearby and showed off the screen, "Well, why don't we start with this?" she pointed at an image, "It'll take a while, but I think this is what we should focus on right now."
"Whoa, that looks really complicated. Where'd you even get the idea for that?"
"While you were gone, I was actually thinking about hallucinogens, and how we could counter them. So this is what I came up with." the black-haired girl explained, "It's not that I don't believe you, but like Lelouch said; we have to prepare for everything."
Kallen nodded in understanding, "Alright, then let's do this."
15 minutes later…
"So I just pour this in?" the red head questioned while holding a vial of purple liquid over a beaker of red liquid
"Um… yeah…" with that, she poured the entire vial in, causing a bubbling reaction. That's when Maya finished her sentence, "Just don't put it all in. Otherwise, it'll-"
Kallen's eyes narrowed once she noticed the red liquid rise, causing her to instinctively jump on her friend, pushing her behind a table. Then, the vial exploded, sending shards of glass everywhere, "You should really learn to finish your sentences," she responded while standing up.
Maya let out a light chuckle, "Sorry about that. We'll get it next time."
25 minutes later…
"How much do I pour in, any way?" the red head asked while holding another vial of purple liquid.
"Hm… try about half?"
"Why was that a question!?"
"Just do it." Maya responded while ducking behind a table.
Kallen sighed and poured about half into the beaker, before joining her friend behind the table, "Now what?"
"Put this in next," the black-haired girl handed over a green vial, "But do it slowly."
The Stadtfeld sighed as she slowly approached the red beaker, which was now bubbling, "How much?" she asked while carefully pouring in the green liquid.
"Until it stops bubbling?"
"Again, with the questions."
"I told you! This isn't my specialty."
After draining three-quarters of the vial, the bubbling stopped, "What now?"
"We separate them into vials, and place them in the centrifuge." Maya watched as Kallen grabbed five vials, "Then, we'll slowly incorporate these mushrooms once the contents change color." she now held up a dozen toadstools with gloved-hands.
Once she was done separating the liquid into vials, Kallen placed them into the centrifuge, before turning it on. Then, she walked over the mushrooms while Maya had her back turned, looking at her laptop, "So you want me to cut the stalk?"
"Yes please, make sure they're like little sticks" her friend replied with her back turned.
"So, like a julienne?"
"If that means sticks, sure."
Kallen, while gloveless, cuts the mushroom tops off with a kitchen knife, before beginning to julienne the stalks, "Everything?"
"Yeah, that way, we won't have to cut them later."
Upon finishing, the red head felt her hands start to itch, but like her migraines, she paid it no mind, and checked on the centrifuge, "Hey, this thing's starting to turn blue."
Maya walked over and said, "Good," she turned off the machine, "Now, let's carefully put in the mushrooms," that's when she noticed Kallen scratching her hands profusely, "Where are your gloves?"
The red head's eyes widened, "You didn't tell me to wear those…"
"Did you cut the mushrooms gloveless?"
It took a second, but she finally responded, "Yes…" however, that wasn't it, "I'll just go wash my hands"
"Wait! Don't do that!" Maya attempted to warn her friend, but it was too late.
Kallen arrived at a nearby sink, turning on the water in hopes to cure her ailment, instead, she felt the itchiness spread from her hands, up her arms. Now, it hurts. "Ow!" she yelped, stumbling backwards.
Luckily, her friend was quick to react, as she wet a cloth with bleach, and began dabbing it on the red head's arms. "We'll have to get some real ointment, then we'll wrap bandages around your hands." Maya explained calmly, "Keep using this cloth to reduce the itching until I come back."
Kallen sat on the ground, holding the bleach-soaked cloth in her right hand, "Why do I have to do this? What's Lelouch even doing right now!?"
"Checkmate," the Prince called as Mario hung his head in defeat, "That's your 15th loss in a row. Are you sure you want to continue?"
"We don't have anything else to do, do we?" the black-haired boy asked while resetting the board.
"Speaking of nothing to do. Are you sure?"
"Sure about what?"
"About earlier."
"Oh. You mean that," Mario was the first to make a move, "Yes, whole heartily."
Lelouch sighed as he moved a knight forward, "I don't think you understand the repercussion of those actions though…" he watched as his opponent moved his bishop, "After all, it's not the same as indirectly poisoning some students."
Mario shifted in his seat as the Prince brought out his other knight, "Is he messing with me?" though, he quickly dismissed such a thought, "Lelouch, do you remember why I came to you in the first place?"
"Yes. You said you were afraid of Lewis finding out about your sister's secret project."
"That's correct… however, there's more to that story." he quickly took one of Lelouch's knights while they were out in the open.
"I suspected as much. Well then, what is it?"
Mario took in a deep breath, "me and my sister… we visit the Ghetto's often. Like, really often," once he realized the Prince wouldn't respond, he continued, "You see… my sister picked up this hobby of giving food to the" he exhaled, "Eleven's…"
"Mhm. And why would she do that?"
"Truth be told, I don't know. She says it oddly makes her feel… fulfilled. It's one of the few things she actually feels good doing. Of course, I warned her of the dangers of being caught, but instead of stopping, she kept going, and eventually… I joined her."
Lelouch nodded in response, "So, why're you so intent on people not knowing? Is it because you don't want to be seen as weak? Or perhaps, you don't want people to know that you're not playing the role of a good Britannian by squashing the Numbers under your boot?"
"Don't you think it's wrong to look down on others just because they lost? The Elevens… they lost their homes, families, and nearly all their rights as human beings after the war. To me, that's just not right."
"So we're in agreement, just like I thought." the Prince responded casually, "But there's something else, isn't there?" he watched as his opponent's hand froze up, "There always is"
Mario shook his head and played his next move, "Well, while we were in the Ghetto about a month or so ago… we saw Coach Villetta and another man with her."
For a second, but only a second, Lelouch's eyes narrowed, before returning to normal, "And what did you do?"
"We left, after all, she was dressed like a soldier at the time. So we got startled." Mario responded, "Though… we heard them talking about possible Britannian terrorists in the area before leaving."
"And you think she's here to arrest you?" Lelouch added, So that's why he's so willing to help us… it all makes sense."
The black-haired boy nodded, "It's not me. It's my sister I'm worried about. When we tried to leave, she bumped into another soldier, who began to interrogate her. Though, she did manage to get away from him, I'm still worried that's why Coach Villetta is here."
"And subsequently, that's why Casmir, Lewis, and Jasper are here?"
"Correct."
"This is certainly an interesting development…" the Prince leaned back in his seat, mindlessly moving pieces around, "It sounds like Maya and Mario could be more useful than I thought. I suppose this explains why they weren't all that surprised when I asked Kallen if Eden Vital infiltrated the Government. It's because they already knew Villetta was a soldier. Though, if I follow this same line of thinking, then the next question should be…"
"What about you? How did you know about the teachers being from the Government?" Mario asked.
"Do you really want to know?" Lelouch countered with a serious tone, "I hope you know once I tell you, you can't tell another soul."
The black-haired boy sighed, "I won't be scared by whatever you say."
The Prince smiled internally, "Kallen and I are working with a rebel group."
A look of genuine shock crossed over Mario's face, "You know… I was expecting you to say that, but I wasn't expecting you to say it so outright."
"I can be an honest person sometimes." Lelouch responded while moving a piece forward, "Checkmate."
"Again!?"
"Now, what will you do with this information?" the Prince's eyes now looked upon Mario with disdain, he had to be careful with his next response.
"Well… I won't be bringing my sister into this-"
"Yet you're going to kill someone for her? Shouldn't she know what you're doing in that case?"
"I could say the same thing for you."
Lelouch chuckled, "I suppose you could. Still, do you have the nerve to take the shot? Will you chicken out at the last second?"
"No." Mario responded firmly. "I want to kill Casmir myself."
"You do realize once you do that, there's no going back, right? If you agree to this, you'll be a 'terrorist' too."
"That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
Lelouch smirked, "I see, then let me explain the plan…"
Kallen wrapped several bandages around her hands, before putting rubber gloves over them, "Alright. Let's get this over with," she said as the centrifuge continued to spin the vials around.
Maya stopped the machine, staring at the now black liquid, "It doesn't look good…"
"What do you mean? I thought we did everything right."
"Yeah, we did… but that doesn't change the fact that the colors off. Perhaps we should do a few tests."
"I'm not injecting that into me!" the red head shouted
"Oh come on Kally~" Maya pleaded as she reached for a syringe, "This is for the greater good!"
"No way!" she quickly slapped her hand, preventing it from grabbing the needle.
The black-haired girl sighed, "Fine… I guess I could just look at it through a microscope to see if everything's in order…" she then muttered, "Though, it won't be as funny…"
"I heard that!" Kallen exclaimed as Maya took a glass case, along with one of the vials.
"Do you think this Geass thing is real?"
"It could be," the red head lied, "Though, if it were real, it's kind of scary to think someone has that kind of power, right?"
"You're right…" Maya walked into a supply closet, "What's your opinion on the Elevens?"
An odd question, considering they weren't even a topic this whole time. Regardless, Kallen answered, "I think everyone deserves to live without being bothered by the Government all the time." not exactly a lie, but not the whole truth either.
"I think I agree with you," the black-haired girl responded while walking out with a microscope, "To an extent, of course." she placed it on one of the tables, where she poured the black liquid onto a glass tab. "Can I tell you a secret?"
Kallen nodded, "Sure."
"I give food to the Japanese in Shinjuku Ghetto."
"Japanese?"
As if reading her thoughts, Maya said, "Is it odd for me to refer to them as Japanese? I don't think so, after all, that's what they are."
Kallen was taken aback by this, "Wait, why do you give them food?"
"Because they're hungry."
"I know that, but… isn't there another reason?"
Maya thought about it for a bit, before responding, "It's probably because I'm also half-Japanese."
The red head's mind couldn't comprehend what was going on, "Wait… if she's Japanese, then doesn't that also mean Mario is too? But if that's true… why haven't I heard of them?" she rubbed her temple, "At first, I thought they were just some random Britannians that didn't like the new teachers… but this…" quickly, she composed herself, "Why're you telling me this?"
Maya smiled, "Because… I trust you. For the first time since going to this school, I feel like I've finally found a friend, someone who I can be myself around. I don't know why I have this feeling, but it's similar to how I feel when I give food to the Japanese. It's… fulfilling…" she then turned to her friend, "Do you think any differently of me?"
Kallen gave a sigh of relief, "No, I don't. After all, I'm also half-Japanese"
The black-haired girl's jaw dropped, "No way! Really?" her friend nodded, "Then… is Lelouch also Japanese?"
"Not that I know of."
"Oh…" Maya looked disappointed, "Will you tell him someday?"
"He already knows." the red head replied with a smile.
"Seriously! And he doesn't treat you any differently?"
"Nope"
"Whoa… you're lucky. There's a good amount of students who wouldn't want to be around a half-breed, let alone date them."
Kallen's face turned red upon hearing those words, "I… yeah… I suppose so…"
Maya wrapped her arms around her friend, "But this makes me happy! I can finally talk to someone who understands me!"
"What about your brother?"
"Eh, I talk to him all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love him to death, but I'd like to talk to someone else sometimes, you know?"
Kallen knew that feeling. She had felt the same way in the last timeline, going throughout school, feeling like she couldn't really make any friends due to her heritage. However, then she met the student council, where she finally felt like she belonged. Though, it's nice to meet another Japanese in school; someone who can understand her feelings.
"Well… let's complete this anti-toxin," Maya said, breaking away from the red head, "Then, we'll be able to talk some more."
Kallen smiled, "I wish I met you in the last timeline, Maya. I wonder what happened to you before? No, that time has passed. I have to worry about now. And since you feel the same way about the Japanese… then maybe you can help."
"Hey, Maya, there's one more secret I have… though, it's something you can't tell anyone else, okay?"
"Don't worry, Kally. You can tell me anything. After all, we have to stick together."
"I'm glad you think that way." the red head took in a deep breath, "You see… I'm actually a rebel."
AN: I don't know when the Guren type-01 was made, though, considering how advanced the was, I doubt the type-01 was only created a month prior to it. And considering how long it took Rakshata to actually make the glide system, while combining it with the fact that Lloyd knew about the Radiant Wave Surger, I'd say she was working on the Surger for over a year, however, she only managed to perfect it the same month that it was used.
