Beautiful Day- or Birth of the Universe

A mini Good Omens AU fan-fiction

There was no day and no night. There was nothing, only darkness. And God. He was and had always been. And now He was about to move.

God had been making plans. He had been thinking about the world He was going to create. As He was omnipotent, He could see all time, all that would ever be and what could be. He saw all the good, all the wonderful events of creations, the beauty and the expanse.

He also saw the bad that would come with it, the sorrow that would accompany all this if He chose to create beings with free will, with the ability to chose. He knew what they would decide. He saw it. And He already had a plan for Salvation. It would take time, thousands of years, but God was God. He hadn't even created time yet. There was just the great dark and the waters below.

Then God spoke.

With a bang, it happened. The darkness split and Light burst forth. Out of nothing came substance. The first day passed into the first night.

God wasn't finished. Out of the light and darkness came the sun and moon, stars hung in the vast expanse of space and planets were formed. Some were small, some made of ice and rock, others of gas and dust.

One planet was water and dry land, and on this planet, God produced Life. Grass sprang up on the land, trees spread their branches to the sky and on shrubs, fruit grew. The animals came next, so many that it was impossible to count them all. Birds filled the skies, fish teemed in the waters, which were called seas, and on the ground, animals of every kind abounded. From thundering elephants to the tiniest of lizards sunning themselves on a rock, Earth was full of life.

But God had one more creation to bring into being. His masterpiece. A being crafted after His own image and likeness. A human being.

From the dust, He made him; first a man, than a woman. He made them for Himself and for each other. His angels couldn't understand what was so amazing about these humans, but it was very clear the Almighty cared deeply for them. He put them in the most beautiful place on the planet Earth to live. Only the Morning Star angel had been allowed to enter there.

Meanwhile the other angels tended to the vast creation. This is what they had been created to be. They were the minsters of Light and servants of God.

One angel was on her way through the heavens. Stars and galaxies shot past as she flew. The she saw another angel. He was still, floating motionlessly in space.

She came to a halt as he waved. She drifted down to his level.

"Hello," she said pleasantly.

The other angel returned her smile. He had a great smile. It was full of life and brightness, like the universe around them.

She didn't know his name, but she did know he was a higher angel than she. She was a cherub.

"Hi," he said. "Where are you off to?"

She wasn't really on her way anywhere, which she freely admitted.

"Stay with me then," he said.

She thought about this momentarily, fluttering her wings slowly. "What are you doing?"

He grinned broadly. "The universe! The whole vastness of it all! I mean, it's so incredible! It came out of nothing. Doesn't that just stagger you? He made it all; the stars, the nebulas, planets… That thing there is a comet!"

He pointed to a bright object streaking by.

"It is lovely," the angel agreed, folding her hands.

The other angel continued to grin, his joy reflected in his golden eyes. Even his fiery hair seemed to be aflame with it, as the light of the stars caught the red tinge.

His happiness was catching. The female angel watched him. There was such a warmth, such a look of pure wonder on his face, it was almost human. The angel had seen the same wonder on the man and woman in the Garden as they explored their new home. This angel had the same appearance. It was fascinating. She wanted to know more, but it wasn't her place to ask questions.

The other angel seemed to guess her thoughts. "Sometimes you wonder why," he said. "You wonder why He made all this. Does it have a purpose? Or is it just here because He could?"

She looked at the celestial bodies twinkling in the deep black backdrop of space with all the glorious shrouds of pink and purple bursting all around as new stars continued to be born.

"What do you think?" he asked her.

"I don't know," she said. "I don't think of questions. I merely do. God's ways are ineffable."

"Ineffable," he repeated. "I suppose they are."

"Only the Almighty is God and we are messengers of His Light," she said. It sounded perfectly reasonable to her.

"Yeah," the other angel agreed with a shrug. "Still, can't see what harm there is in asking a few questions."

She looked at him, something like worry fluttering in her chest. She didn't even know what worry was. "I wouldn't want you to get in trouble," she said.

"Nah, I won't," he said with that grin. "Don't think He'll mind. Just pardonable curiosity."

She studied his face. It was free from any worry or negative feelings, whatever those were. There was just joy. She had to smile back. Her face was best suited for happiness than woe. The smile went from her plump cheeks up to her blue eyes and her golden hair framed her face in a pleasing way.

The other angel noticed. "You should smile more," he said. "God's everywhere; in the Heavens and the Earth. Flowers are blooming, the birds are singing. The celestials ring with the Almighty's praises. It's a beautiful day."

He laughed, and she laughed with him.

"It is a very beautiful day," she said.

It's a beautiful day

Don't let it get away

It's a beautiful day

Ooh, hoo, hoo…
