Trust

They say trust is earned. There are not too many people in Maura Isles' life that she trusted. Growing up her parents were very busy people they were always traveling for the jobs. They took Maura with them occasionally but not all the time.

They said they would attend some of her life events but then they had work commitments and didn't attend. As time went on, she learned not to trust what they said. If they said they would be at one of her events she wouldn't believe it until they actually showed up. They actually did make it to a few events and she was surprised.

In boarding school in France, the other girls made fun of her. Some of them she thought were her friends. She soon learned she really didn't have any friends there. Maura was very intelligent and had skipped some grades in school so she wasn't as socially developed as she should have been for her grade level, that didn't help her. She felt awkward and outcast.

Her teachers praised her work but frowned on her lack of team participation. She seemed to do most of the work on any team projects that she was assigned to. Her fellow students loved it when they were assigned to her team. They knew that Maura Isles always received high marks on all of her school work, and they knew she would do all of the work if they just sat back and did nothing because Maura didn't want her school marks to suffer.

At the young age of sixteen Maura started college. She was the youngest person in almost all of her classes. Maura Isles was very intelligent and had a beautiful body. Most of the guys wanted to date her in her later years of college but she didn't get a lot of second dates.

Men and women were often intimidated by her. She was knowledgeable in almost every subject and they often felt dumb around her. Many found her sexually pleasing but couldn't stand all the intelligent gibberish she spoke. They felt that she didn't carry on a conversation like a normal person, she was always sharing facts and statistics and they found that boring. The moniker of Maura the bora followed her into college, she hated it.

Maura felt as though she would always be alone. Sure, she dated but she was never in a lasting relationship like other people she knew. Her parents tried to fix her up with people within their social circles but that didn't work either. She ran into the same problems.

People were often disgusted by the career path she had chosen for herself. They thought being a medical examiner was an odd choice for a job. She was so intelligent and could do so many different types of jobs her choice of a job just didn't sit well with other people. She got to the point where she didn't care what people thought anymore, she was determined to be the best medical examiner she could be. She could trust her evidence and facts. They wouldn't lie to her. People may lie to her but forensic evidence does not falter and does not lie.

So, she grew up not trusting people. She trusted facts and evidence only. She was highly respected in her field and spoke at many seminars for forensic science. Every fact she presented at any seminar was backed up and if anybody didn't trust her, she had her list of facts and carried the evidence with her. On every trip one suitcase was always dedicated to the books and scientific publications that backed up her presentation. She even went so far to fact check the publications to make sure that the material being presented in the publications was factual.

Maura met a kindred sole when she came to work for the Boston Police Department. Senior Criminalist Susie Chang was just as dedicated to her job as she was. She couldn't believe it, she had never met somebody as dedicated to the facts and evidence as her. She didn't automatically trust Susie. However, after working together for a short period of time, she learned that she could trust Susie.

She also met Detectives Jane Rizzoli, Barold Frost and Sergeant Detective Vincent Korsak. Out of all the detectives within the department this was the team that she felt most comfortable around. Susie had told her that this was the team of detectives that were most appreciative of their dedication to finding the evidence that would help them solve their cases.

Susie informed Maura that some of the other detectives were pushy and demanding and didn't care that the crime lab had tons of evidence to process, they wanted their evidence pushed through first. Although Detective Rizzoli could be pushy sometimes Susie had always found that she would eventually back down. Susie enjoyed working with Detective Rizzoli's team.

After weeks of working with Detective Rizzoli and her team, Maura started forming a bond with them. She found it easier with them for some reason. She had never experienced such ease in working with a group of people before. She was building trust with these four individuals and she liked the feeling. She had never really felt like she could trust people before but these four individuals followed through with what they said they were going to do. Maura was happy she had people in her life that she could trust and that was something she had never had before.

Jane and Maura became friends. After a few months Jane introduced her to her family. Maura found herself at ease with the Rizzoli family. She found her chosen family, people she could trust. She gained a mother and two brothers out of the deal. The family extended to include Susie, Frost and Korsak. She still didn't quickly trust others but her life was better with these seven people in life.

She didn't feel as though Jane was her sister, she had stronger feelings for Jane. She was fortunate that Jane also had feelings for her and after a few months they started dating. Jane always seemed to be at Maura's house, so she asked Jane to move in with her. After three months of dating, Jane moved in with Maura.

Sunday quickly became family day. The extended family gathered at Jane and Maura's house to spend the day together. They went to sporting activities, watched TV, played games, or simply talked about different things. No matter what they did, the day ended the same way each Sunday, with a nice Italian meal cooked by Angela Rizzoli.

Months went by and Maura surprised herself, she asked Jane to marry her. Maura never saw herself being married or having a family. With Jane by her side and with the trust that she found with her, Maura became the person she had always wanted to be. Now they had to have one important conversation, children, to have or not to have.
