Author's Note: Hello, one and all!

Thank you so much for your patience. After posting the previous chapter, I went to work on writing this new chapter. I wanted to type it up afterwards, but I shifted focus to updating two of my other stories. And from there, things got busy for me.

Thank you to Boris Yeltsin, Blood for Ink, and Crimson Commander688 for the reviews. I hope you like this new chapter.

Riverdale is not mine, all rights go to Warner Bros., Archie Comics, the CW and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa respectively.

Chapter 84

Meanwhile, the whistle rings out on the field. Jock is there, wearing Jason's number 9 jersey. He had stopped by and asked Coach Clayton to try out for football; in which Coach Clayton agreed. The Texas native also informed the coach that he had experience in playing football.

Deep in concentration, Jock narrows his eyes. One team player yells out the play and Jock has the ball.

Taking it, Jock runs and then tossed the football to another player. Things continue to go smoothly from here on out, impressing Coach Clayton in the process.

Afterwards, Jock and the rest of the football players went to the locker room. He had taken off the jersey and shoulder pads, leaning against the lockers. Jock is catching his breath when Coach Clayton entered the room.

"Graham, you did great out there, not bad for a newcomer." Coach Clayton commented.

"Thank you, Coach." Jock responds.

"However, you're gonna have some competition, if you want a spot on this team." He adds as he turned to the side.

"Mantle!" Coach Clayton called to Reggie; who's walking by. Hearing his name, Reggie walks up.

"What's up coach?" He asked.

"You want to be captain?" Coach Clayton asks.

"Oh, yeah, I do." Reggie said, approaching.

"Then, this here's what we call a horse race, fellas." Coach Clayton informed. "Now, you've got a week to show me who wants top spot more. Well, good luck."

He walks off. Reggie smirks.

"Look, Reggie…" Jock began to say.

"Save it, Tex." Reggie cuts off Jock. "If anybody deserves to be captain and wear Jason's number, it's me. Not you, it wouldn't fit you anyway."

He walks off and Jock glares in Reggie's direction.

Meanwhile, Fred Andrews enters Pop's Diner and walked up to the counter where Hermione is. Seeing him, Hermione finished tending to the customer and retrieved Fred's order.

"Your usual, turkey on rye, hold the tomatoes to go." Hermione hands the bag to Fred.

"Oh, great." Fred sighs with gratitude. "Can I get a huge cup of coffee to go?"

"Running a little or no sleep, Archie up all hours." He explained as Hermione fixed coffee for Fred.

"Listen, I was thinking maybe we should take another stab at going on a date." Fred offered. "So, what do you say, dinner?"

"Fred, um…" Hermione starts to say, giving him coffee. "I'm married and you are too. On top of that, I now have Jock to deal with."

"Uh, I'm a little confused here. So, the drive-in…that wasn't a date?" Fred asks, frowning.

Hermione's face fell.

"Totally my bad," Fred gets up and leaves, taking his sandwich and coffee. "I gotta go,"

"Hey, Fred, wait…" Hermione said.

"It's all good. I'll catch you later." Fred turns and left the diner.

Hermione sighs. For she went about it the wrong way.

A/N: Oh, Hermione, you put your foot in your mouth.

And I hoped you enjoyed it! I had previously mentioned that there wouldn't be any competition between Archie & Reggie for the team captain position; since Archie is no longer on the team. However, after consulting with Boris Yeltsin through PM, I decided to have Jock try out for football and even compete with Reggie. Thank you to Boris Yeltsin for the suggestion and the input on Jock's experience with playing football.

Up next, the gang have lunch together (including Jock on his first day at Riverdale High) and even Cheryl shows up to give out invitations for Jason's wake.

Until then, see you next time and I wish you all a merry Christmas!
