Chapter Thirty-Four

Days has gone by since Danielle was able to talk to her dad. The annual Coven Day parade was around the corner. Danielle had taken to recording on her cellphone various areas that would make her dad think the Demon Realm wasn't so bad. Right now, she was sitting on the steps of Hexside alongside Willow, Gus, and Collector.

"I thought school would be a lot more fun," said Collector, sitting upside down and swinging his legs about.

"Everyone perceives fun in their own way," said Danielle, turning off her cellphone. "Also, I think I liked it best when my Potions Teacher was still a puppet. She's back on my case again since you un-puppeted her."

"Get a new Potions Teacher," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "There's that lady with the mushroom hat up on the third floor of Hexside. She looks like a better Potions Teacher."

"Yeah, Mrs. Asparilla didn't discriminate against me," said Danielle, looking towards the third floor. "She actually worked and encouraged me."

"See, even I can understand her and I don't even go here," said Collector, before groaning after hearing Willow and Gus talk about Belos. "Ugh, do you have to talk about him?"

"Sorry," said Willow, looking at Collector.

"So, Danielle," said Gus, looking at Danielle. "You've seen Belos up close. What's he like under... all that?"

"You two already know what I told you," said Danielle, looking at Gus and Willow.

"All we know is what you told," said Gus, looking at Danielle. "We actually want to see."

"You're not prying the memory out," said Danielle, not wanting the actual memory pulled out before seeing Amity. "Hey, Amity."

"Hola, galleta," said Amity, sitting down on the steps.

"Did… did you just call me…" said Danielle, sputtering in shock. "Cookie?"

"Yes! I thought a nickname would suffice since we've become friends again," said Amity, looking at Danielle and holding up a book. "I'm still figuring out this human language book from Gus. I'm not sure it's really polish…"

"It's not, it's Spanish," said Danielle, looking at the book. "And that's a cookbook."

"Uh, so..." said Amity, changing the subject. "Did that Titan Blood ever come in handy?"

"Did you finish building the door?" asked Willow, looking at Danielle.

"Did you visit your dad?" asked Gus, looking at Danielle. "Does he know about fist bumps too?"

"Yes, to all those questions," replied Danielle, looking at everyone. "He wants me back home where it's safe after I make a better working door."

"What?" said everyone, looking at Danielle. "Why?"

"I told him everything and he doesn't want me around the Emperor," replied Danielle, standing up. "I best get back to the Owl House. Later guys."

"See you soon," said Collector, following after Danielle. "Hey, Danielle, think your dad will allow you to leave again to find your mom among the stars. I did promise that I would help you find her."

"I don't really know," said Danielle, pulling her hair back as she deeply breathed. "If anything, I'll end up getting an earful from Grampa if he finds out when I return and try to do what he did the last time."

"Last time?" said Collector, looking at Danielle.

"Grampa wasn't liking how dad was taking care of me," said Danielle, looking ahead. "Took custody of me for a while and enrolled me in St. Joan of Arc Catholic School. Those nuns were ruthless with a ruler."

"I'm afraid to ask," said Collector, before seeing Eda and King flying towards them on staff. "Eda! King!"

"Come on, Danielle," said King, as Danielle and Collector hopped on the staff and flew towards Bonesborough. "There's no way your dad will make you leave the Demon Realm!"

"Yeah!" said Eda, looking at Danielle. "When he meets us, I'll make sure to put on the charm... that turns people into obedient zombies."

"Wanna bet," said Danielle, before seeing Coven Scouts galore in town. "Dare I ask?"

"They're probably prepping for the annual Coven Day Parade," said King, looking around. "Floats, streamers, fireworks…"

"Hate the Coven System but…" said Danielle, before squealing in excitement. "I love parades."

"Not happening. Besides it's just a fancy way to kiss the Emperor's..." said Eda, only to see Danielle try to cover both King and Collector's ears. "Whatever. I'm just here to pick something up."

"Kikimora," said Danielle, in a low voice as they landed and saw Kikimora talking on a crow phone. "Not even for loyal subjects do you even give a break for."

"Hey, Danielle!" said King, as Danielle walked over. "I know what'll cheer you up."

"Please no bread puns today, King," said Danielle, sighing.

"How bout a tongue twister?" asked Collector, looking at Danielle.

"What? No," said King, looking at Danielle. "I'm talkin' about hot goss, girl! Hot goss buns. Bread pun. Guess why we're here!"

"King!" said Eda, irritated as she holds a file.

"Eda hired someone to spy on her ex!" said King, wagging his tail.

"R to the A to the E-E-Da, what does that spell?" said Collector, laughing. "Raeda! Hahahahaha."

"Hahahaha, Collector heard that day, hehehe."

"Did you read my diary?!" asked Eda, gasping in embarrassment. "Also drop the Raeda. I get enough of that at home from the four of you."

"No promises," said Danielle, smiling while holding her laughter back.

"I'm just wanting to check up on him after what happened," said Eda, looking at the file on Raine.

"Interesting," said Danielle, looking at the file. "Likes spicy food. Wonder how much heat he can take."

"Oh right, I never mentioned this about Raine to you," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "They prefer they/them, not the he/him she/her thing."

"Oh, I haven't had much experience with that," said Danielle, holding her arm and looking to the side. "How do… they… like being addressed? Cause I don't know."

"Mx. is the right word," said Eda, looking at the file.

"This is going to getting some use to," said Danielle, twirling a lock of her hair.

"I've been around for a very long time and never heard of such a thing," said Collector, looking at Eda. "I'll have to remember that."

"Oh, what do you prefer Collector?" asked King, looking at Collector.

"Oh, well I'm definitely a boy" replied Collector, looking at everyone. "I'd know, I have a…"

"TMI, Collector," said Danielle, covering Collector's mouth. "I don't need to know about your dingaling down there… forget I said that."

"Haha, dingaling, funny, but yeah I'm a boy," said Collector, looking at everyone. "Even if I do find dresses pretty. Also, what is TMI?"

"TMI is an acronym for too much information," replied Danielle, looking at Collector. "So, you think dresses are pretty, huh?"

"Well, not all of them but yeah," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "What I don't like is my sister forcing me into ones that I don't like just cause she wants to play dress up and I'm the only one around."

"All right, back on subject," said Eda, still looking at the file. "According to this, Raine is still working with the Emperor's Coven which doesn't make sense. They were seen as a traitor!"

"Maybe this is part of their plan," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "We could ask them personally."

"If they're here for the parade, they'll probably be surrounded by scouts," said Eda, as Danielle pointed to a poster. "Oh, we'd need someone on the inside to lend us a hand."

"Yeah, but who?" said Danielle, before seeing Kikimora trip on a plank. "Think Kikimora would be willing to talk?"

"Yeah, right," said Eda, snorting. "As if she'd give us the time of day."

"Wouldn't hurt to try," said Danielle, walking over to Kikimora. "Hey, Kikimora, need someone to vent to?"

"Ugh, so bored," said Collector, listening to Kikimora's story.

"And… and then she said if I don't make it back for the family reunion, I'd be banished from Palm Stings and the family home!" said Kikimora, sobbing. "But I've failed too many missions, and if I leave my job now, I'll be banished from my life!"

"Eeeyikeseeola," said Danielle, looking at Kikimora. "This may be slightly tricky… whoa!"

"Are you out of your mind? Kikimora nearly turned me to stone. She attacked you back in Latissa," said Eda, grabbing Danielle by her hood. "Oh, she is bad, and not the hot kinda bad."

"Don't you want to talk to Raine?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda. "There's a risk, but we're always taking risks here and there on occasions."

"Maybe," replied Eda, looking at Danielle. "But what're you getting out of this?"

"Caleb is preventing her from seeing her mom and family," replied Danielle, looking at Kikimora. "She should be allowed to see them."

"Ugh, fine!" said Eda, groaning.

"Fine? What's fine?" asked Kikimora, glaring at Danielle and Eda. "What are you cretins planning?"

"We just want to help you," replied Danielle, looking at Kikimora. "Two ways we can do this. One: I can take your place under an illusion while you visit your family in Palm Stings."

"And two?" said Eda, looking at Danielle.

"Two, we could project the parade and Kikimora in Palm Stings," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "Not only would her family get to see her but she wouldn't have to leave and they'd get a parade as well."

"Terra is going to be there watching Kikimora. The only thing she's going to get is to live should she prove her dedication."

"That's not good," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"I'm assuming the Little Bird told you something," said Eda, knowing Danny told Danielle something.

"Little Bird?! Please, don't call me that."

"Little bird?" said Kikimora, looking at Eda and Danielle. "Ah, right, you're under the oracle track at Hexside. Your little spirit friend say anything?"

"Yeah, I guess you can say that," replied Danielle, lightly scratching her cheek. "Apparently, Terra will be there to watch you."

"Terra!" said Kikimora, shocked. "Neither one of those plans will work then."

"There was something along the line of proving your dedication," said Danielle, looking at Kikimora. "Trying to get a promotion?"

"… …" said Kikimora, before squealing. "If there's a promotion, then I will surely dedicate myself to this parade."

"But what about your family? Your mom?" asked Danielle, looking at Kikimora. "After all that you said to us, don't you want to see them?"

"Danielle…" said Eda, placing a hand on Danielle's shoulder.

"No no, Kikimora should get to see her mom and family," said Danielle, pushing Eda's hand away before running away.

"Danielle, wait up," said Collector and King, chasing after Danielle.

"I have to figure this out, I have to," said Danielle, coming to a stop and sitting down. "Blast it, Caleb. He's doing everything to hurt these people, even separating families."

"Danielle…" said Collector, walking close to Danielle alongside King. "Are you…"

"One of my plans has to work, it just has to," said Danielle, talking to herself. "Kikimora should get to see her mom… unlike me."

"Danielle…" said Collector and King, looking at Danielle before hugging her.

As the day went on, Danielle was trying to figure out how to help Kikimora. King actually had to stuff a muffin in her mouth to get her to eat. Before long, Danielle was able to settle somewhat on a plan. Rummaging through some trash bins, both Danielle and Eda were able to get plenty of dirty cloths that were easily washed and cleaned curtesy of water, fire and wind glyphs. King and Collector were carrying a bunch of fireworks and such purchased by Edric. Setting up a decent carriage, Danielle set off a wood glyph to craft an upper body half of a human. Making sure the cloths were firmly placed, Danielle eyes the makeshift Belos float.

"Danielle, maybe you should slow down," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "Your hair is changing again."

"This has to be perfect," said Danielle, pacing about the float. "Kikimora will see her mom by end of this."

"It's not a half bad plan but…" said Eda, checking the plan on chalkboard. "Putting yourself in Kikimora's place is dangerous. Plus, you're not her size."

"I am not allowing King or Collector to take that part, too dangerous," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "I'll just curl into a ball and sit like that during the parade."

"It's getting close to parade time," said Hooty, looking at everyone.

"This has to work," said Danielle, pushing the carriage towards the parade grounds. "This just has to."

"Strap yourselves in boys," said Eda, pushing alongside Danielle. "This is going to be a long night."

Finally arriving near the parade, King and Hooty hid within the float. Eda and Danielle were bidding their time till their float came within the halfway point. Collector floated nearby, worried as Danielle's celestial nature was coming out more and more as the seconds went by. By the time, the float reached the halfway point, Hooty and King signaled Danielle and Eda.

"That's the signal," said Danielle, hopping down the building. "Let's go."

"Collector, stay nearby," said Eda, looking at Collector as she followed Danielle. "Danielle may need your help by the end of this."

"Got it," said Collector, landing near Eda.

"Four! Three! Two…" said Hooty and King, looking at their watch before setting off fireworks.

"Should we, uh, do something about that?" asked a Coven Scout, looking at Kikimora.

"Yes, of course, you hangnails!" said Kikimora, ordering the Coven Scouts. "I command all of you to investigate!"

"There we go," said Danielle, as smoke bombs went up before grabbing Kikimora.

"Ooh! I cannot believe we are being taken against our will," said Kikimora, playing along. "What sayeth you, fiend?"

"Looks like we got the petite bride for our ruler," said Danielle, loud enough for the crowd to hear. "Let's get moving."

"Oh, my word," said Kikimora, blushing.

"Sorry Danielle," thought Collector, sitting down on the float Kikimora was riding and casting an illusion over himself to appear as Kikimora as Danielle and Eda ran away with their targets on hand.

"What the…" said a Coven Scout, looking towards the float. "Kikimora, I thought you were…"

"I'm married to the Emperor's Coven," said Collector, holding the reins to the rat worms. "That's all that matters. Let's continue."

"Oh my, it's working?" thought Danielle, carrying Kikimora as she ran down an alley as the invisibility glyph stopped. "I think I need a little breather."

"We're visible?" said Kikimora, looking at herself than Danielle. "We need to disappear again! Before Terra…"

"Oh, my word. Where could Kiki have gone? Such a valued member of the coven must be found post haste!" said Terra, as her venus flytrap broke through the streets revealing her. "Have you seen her, little fly? Guess not."

"Shit! Shit, shit, shit, shit," thought Danielle, grabbing Kikimora before going invisible again. "Terra is a lot more perceptive than I thought."

"What a shame that Kikimora would disappear... and right before her promotion," said Terra, before hearing a slight yelp and a bottle to move. "All the missions she would have led, the shiny new badge, the respect. Ah, well. Guess we'll have to find someone else! Hmm. Another pest..."

"Amity?" said Danielle, as she ran and spotted Amity. "How'd you…"

"Book 5, chapter 8, Azura pretends to kidnap Hecate," said Amity, running alongside Danielle. "During the ice festival to save her from the wizard clan!"

"Ugh, please not Azura," said Danielle, groaning. "No offense, but I don't really like that book series."

"Right now I just want to keep my friend from being sent to the Conformatorium..." said Amity, looking at Danielle. "Again."

"Ooh," said Danielle, hopping onto the abomination skateboard Amity conjured. "The docks Amity, please."

"On it," said Amity, skating towards the docks.

"There she is," said Danielle, spotting the Hand Dragon at the docks.

"Princess," said Kikimora, seeing her pet Hand Dragon at the end of the dock.

"All right, final part. Princess will take you straight to Palm Stings," said Danielle, helping Kikimora up before giving the whistle back from that day. "Take her all the way to Palm Stings girl. Straight to her mom."

"You've been such a help to me, human. You really are a kind person..." said Kikimora, before laughing. "And an utter fool! Palm Stings can burn for all I care! You heard Terra. They want to promote me! Me!"

"But…" said Danielle, in disbelief and shock. "Your mom."

"Maybe as a thank you I could give Belos a few gifts," said Kikimora, having her pet Hand Dragon about to attack Danielle and Amity. "A troublemaking human should be good."

"Heel!" shouted Danielle, her eyes aglow as she glared at the Hand Dragon who obeyed. "Sit!"

"Wait, what?!" said Kikimora, glaring at Danielle. "How did you…"

"I worked with Princess here from time to time," said Danielle, glaring at Kikimora. "She doesn't need a whistle to listen all the time."

"You…" said Kikimora, only for vines to tie her and her pet Hand Dragon up. "What is this?"

"It's not me!" said Danielle, shocked. "I swear!"

"Danielle… your other nature," said Amity, gaining Danielle's attention.

"No no," thought Danielle, seeing the markings beginning to show on her body.

"No, that would be me," said Terra, as she emerged from the Boiling Sea from within her plants. "Oh, Kiki, try not to get ahead of yourself. The Emperor has a great many plans, but causing a riot by hurting a couple of children is not one of them."

"But the bard…" said Kikimora, looking at Terra.

"I wasn't sent here to watch over Raine. I was sent here to watch over you," said Terra, looking at Kikimora. "The promotion is real. You just had to prove your dedication."

"The human was right," thought Kikimora, before looking at Terra. "Did I pass?"

"But I…" said Danielle, in a low voice.

"Unfortunately, yes," said Terra, looking away.

"So? What's the promotion?" asked Kikimora, squealing. "Who's under my command? What do I get?"

"You get... to live," replied Terra, making Kikimora go wide-eyed. "Come, Kiki, time…"

"How could you? I tried to help you reunite with your family and mom, which I kill for right now and you do this!" shouted Danielle, as blood trickles from her mouth as her celestial nature fully takes over. "I've told you what would happen and you still brush it aside. Family should just be as important! Your mom wants you to come home even for a little bit!"

"Danielle, calm down!" said Amity, as an unseen wind blows from Danielle. "Your…"

"There are plenty of other parades you can attend to in the coming years!" shouted Danielle, as she started to float as tears were forming in her eyes. "When was the last time you even visited? That's your mom, Kikimora! And she wants to see you!"

"Danielle!" shouted Amity, as Danielle coughed up pools of blood.

"My word, is that what this is about? Seeing your family?" said Terra, looking at Kikimora. "The Emperor's Coven comes first, family second."

"The coven should not come first," shouted Danielle, as she coughs up more blood.

"What's even interesting is the fact…" said Terra, eyeing Danielle. "You're not entirely human."

"Stay away from her!" shouted Collector, blinding the surrounding area with light as he magically flies away with Danielle and Amity in a sphere of magic. "Danielle, are you…"

"She's not doing good," said Amity, as Danielle was coughing up more blood. "Collector, we have to get her to safety and heal her."

"On it," said Collector, flying towards a safe area in Bonesborough and sending signals to Eda, King, and Hooty.

"Hold on, Danielle," said Amity, watching over Danielle. "We'll help heal you."

"What's going on?" asked Eda, as Collector landed as she ran over with King and Hooty. "Oh, my Titan…"

"I-I'll heal her," said Collector, coating his hands in healing magic and placing them over Danielle as Amity held her in place. "This may take a while."

"What happened for her to get like this?" asked Eda, looking at Amity.

"It's a… long story," replied Amity, looking at Eda.

"She'll be okay, right?" asked King, lightly grabbing Danielle's hand and holding it.

"All I know is that Danielle is getting closer to being no longer mortal," replied Collector, focusing on his magic and Danielle. "Thing is… I don't know how much mortal she has left in her. She could be at half, she could be closer, or even still less than half. I don't know."

"Mmm… mmm…" said Danielle, opening her eyes. "Mmm… mmm… … huh…"

"Easy there kid," said Eda, bending down towards Danielle. "You need to rest right now."

"All I wanted to do was help Kikimora see her mom," said Danielle, holding back her tears. "What is so wrong with that? Why couldn't she…"

"Easy there," said Eda, sitting next to Danielle and letting her lean into her.

"Hey, look," said King, pointing in a certain direction where a podium was at with Kikimora, Terra and Raine.

"Um, thank you, Bonesborough, for joining us during this year's Coven Day Parade," said Kikimora, talking to the crowd. "This year is extra special because the Emperor himself has an announcement to make."

"Thank you, everyone," said Emperor Belos, massively projecting himself on stage. "Together we are perfecting the Coven System as the Titan intended. The Day of Unity will be in exactly one month, when the tide is at its lowest and the moon obscures the sun. At that time, we will journey to the head of the Isles, and there, the worthy shall inherit a utopia free of wild magic."

"Free of wild magic?" said King, confused. "How's he supposed to do that?"

"The Draining Spell I gave him," replied Collector, staring at Belos.

"Does this mean no one will be able to use magic anymore?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector. "If that's the case, it will be easy pickings for Belos to off everyone. He has… to be… sto…pped…"

"Danielle!" shouted everyone, as Danielle passes out.
