Note:
The French written in the first line of the this translates into 'The Black Bakers'
'Les boulangers noirs' was written in big, bold letters. Red letters in a fancy script designed by Sirius on a shiny Golden plate (real gold), silver utensils (actual silver) resting on the plate. Black lights gave the letters a new dimension.
James thought of the idea as a way to bring the Blacks (Andromeda, Bellatrix, Narcissa, Regulus and Sirius) together after Walburga died. Later, Narcissa got married. The French nobleman preferred her to sit on her throne, Andromeda got pregnant by her boyfriend (whom she married,) and Bellatrix went to her in-laws and became handicapped.
So it was just Regulus and him, Remus, Peter and James popping by occasionally, and the various customers.
And then Regulus said he wanted a college degree. Sirius let him, as long as they remained in contact, and James decided he was not letting Sirius live alone.
They'd been dating for two years (they started a bit after Regulus went to college) when they found out Regulus had died, and James became closer to the family than Sirius expected.
When they'd gotten engaged, James had persisted in taking the Black name- and Sirius didn't fight him. James had had a lot going on then, and Sirius knew they could change it later.
Of course, when someone asked about the tale of Les boulangers noirs, they didn't get the actual tale, in which James had done everything for Sirius' happiness, and in turn, Sirius hadn't asked questions on James' surname change. The two of them instead told a tale of two lovers who liked baking— a Scottish and an Englishman (whose family had roots in France); both nobility, lovers who gave a great deal up for each other.
It would only be afterwards that Sirius would find the truth of James' name change, but he'd take the secret to his grave.
