The Misdeeds of the Past (The Dear Lady-1972)

At The Ritz In New York

"Ma'am is it true that you once did business with Vito Corleone?"

She gathers herself.

"I did briefly before he employed a man who fed a child to the flames. ".

The same reporter continues; "Did you have anything to do with that man Luca Brasi's Death?"

She pauses. "I did not. Although I am not surprised. Such things do happen to such people. It is the way of the world".

Another reporter takes a different tack- "Is it true that you have made a move to oppose Michael Corleone's control of Immobiliare?"

She scans her notepad and its items- "I have some vested interests in the company that I do not wish not cede to Mr. Corleone.".

A third reporter cuts in- "Is it true that this is part of an ongoing feud against Michael Corleone's family as Mr. Corleone alleges?"

She looks apprehensive. "It is and it isn't. This isn't about Mr. Corleone's family. It's about how he, and his father before him, treat and have treated people".

A fourth reporter from the BBC-

"Ma'am to change the subject, what are your thoughts on the Sunningdale Agreement?"

She replies quickly. "I think it is a good start. I have always been a member of the Democratic party in this country and the implementation of a true democracy in my hometown of Belfast and Northern Ireland as a whole is definitely a measure I favor.".

The BBC reporter continues.

"By the way, is it true that you have been re-charged with a First-Degree Murder in Northern Ireland from over 50 years ago? One in which the Special Branch believes you acted as the sole ringleader?".

She clams up.

He continues.

"And while you agitate for democracy and justice from America, all you really do is hide from the consequences of your actions. Did that family have less right to live than you and your associates because they were Protestant? The son and mother of the family are still alive. And they have the most interesting things to say about you as do others. The Special Branch is speaking with their American colleagues at this time regarding your extradition to strand trial in Great Britain for your crimes Would you like to comment?

She quickly cuts in- "I called this press conference to talk about how Michael Corleone treats people, not these allegations. I must now call it to an end. ".

And then, as she walks away, a thought-

A disappointment.
