Chapter 40

Fury was driving down the road with Vers in the passenger seat and Violet in the back seat. Fury gripped the wheel in his hands. "So the Skrulls are alien races which infiltrate and overtake alien planets. And you're a Kree, a race of noble warriors."

"Heroes. Noble warrior heroes." Vers said rather proudly.

"So um. What do Skrulls want with Dr. Lawson?"

"They believe she developed a light speed engine at Pegasus."

"Light speed engine? I've got to admit, that's not the craziest thing I've heard today."

Violet thought for a moment. "Not the craziest thing I've heard in my life." She said leaning back in her seat.

"Well, it's still early."

"And you, what do you want?" Fury asked, looking over at Vers out of the corner of his eyes.

"To stop the Skrulls before they become unstoppable."

"And...? Look, war is a universal language. I know a rogue soldier when I see one, you've got a personal stake in this."

Violet nodded her head before looking out the windshield seeing the bunker arriving faster to the checkpoint that they were to go through.

"This is a government property, turn your vehicle around." The Security guard said at the gate.

"Nicholas Joseph Fury, Agent of SHIELD. And Violet Margarita Howlett, Agent of Shield."

"Place your thumb on the pad. One moment."

"Nicholas Joseph Fury, you have three names?"

Fury removed his thumb off of the pad. "Everybody calls me Fury. Not Nicholas, not Joseph, not Nick. Just Fury."

"What does your mom call you?"

"Fury."

"What do you call her?"

"Fury."

"What about your kids?"

"If I have them, they'll call me Fury."

"You're cleared for access."

"Thank you."

The gate opened and Fury drove down the driveway into the tunnel.

"We're breaking so many rules doing this Fury."

"I know Howlett."

Violet rolled her eyes knowing that he was willing to break the rules in order to get information on this Vers person. But she couldn't help but have this sinking feeling in her chest that something wasn't right with this whole thing. That something bad was going to happen.

Fury continued to drive until reaching the parking spots before parking the car.

The three of them got out of the car.

"Oh, hold up. You look like somebody's disaffected niece. Put that on." He said, throwing a gray baseball cap that had the shield's logo on it.

"What is this?"

"It's the SHIELD logo." Violet said, stretching out, popping her back some.

"Does announcing your identity on clothing help with the covert part of your job."

"Said the space soldier who was wearing a rubber suit." Fury said, poking at her.

Vers put the hat on her head before looking at the two of them annoyed.

"Lose the flannel."

Vers took off the flannel that was around her waist and put it into the car. She then followed Fury and Violet to the end of the car park leading into an airplane hanger.

A guard came up to them with two armed airmen from behind him. "How can I help you?"

"We're agents of SHIELD." Fury said, handing his badge to the officer.

Violet had her badge out as well.

"We're looking for a woman named Lawson." Vers said hoping that this was going to be an easy task on their hands.

"A Dr. Wendy Lawson." Fury said finishing the name knowing that they needed the full name.

"Do you know her?"

The security officer handed Fury back his badge before directing them where he wanted them to go. "Follow me."

"Hmm."

They were directed to a holding facility.

Violet let out a breath when the door was closed behind them. "Nice on Nick." She said using his first name.

"This tells me that you're upset with me, Howlett."

"Yes, I'm upset with you. We knew that this plan was probably going to fall apart." Violet said with a breath. "They can't have people wandering around here."

A little while later Fury leaned forward putting his elbows on his knees.

Vers leaned back against the wall with her arms crossed.

Violet ran her hand through her hair looking at the door with distaste.

"Are you familiar with the phrase "Welcome Wagon"?" Fury asked, looking at Vers.

"No."

"Well, this ain't it." He said going to the scanner that was near the door. He put his thumb on it and it blinks red. He let out a sigh before taking out his pager.

"Is that a communicator?" Vers questioned looking at it.

Fury stood up and walked across the room. "Yeah. State-of-the-art two-way pager."

"Who are you paging?"

"My mom. Don't worry, I didn't mention you."

Violet looked at Fury with narrowed eyes knowing that wasn't the truth. She knew that he was up to something and it wasn't a good thing. "We should be more focused on getting out of here."

"And how would we do that, Howlett?"
