Earlier….
Several moments earlier before Papyrus returned to Snowdin, he was called by Undyne to speak about the Human Frisk. Frisk meanwhile was walking into Waterfall after having spent some time with Sans, and couldn't help but wonder in the back of her mind what weird thing Sans was talking about that he felt… Either way, for now Frisk had to focus on one thing, getting on the other side and surviving Undyne… "Ok, you can do this…. You can do this. I mean you've done this before…" She could almost feel a chill going through her at the thought of Undyne's spears, piercing through her again and again as have many times before. She stopped in her tracks, taking a moment to compose herself as she slapped her hands against her cheeks. "Ow!... Ok Frisk… You can do this." She rushed into a large patch of tall grass, and just as she made her way in, she stopped when she bumped into something "Ah! Hey wha-" "Shhh!" When Frisk looked up, she saw it was Monster Kid, he shushed her just as he looked upwards at the cliff. She now knew why MK Shushed her, Undyne was up there… And she could barely make out what was being said, though she could see the silhouette of who she believed was Papyrus. "Shoot… Oh shoot…" Frisk would say in a whisper as the two watched, seeing Papyrus looking saddened before walking away. It was then that Undyne slowly walked towards the edge, looking around slowly while both Monster Kid and Frisk looked up at her, and Frisk could swear she could feel Undyne's eyes, staring at her..
Chapter 4: Waterfall
It didn't take long for the two foreign of this world to realize how quickly the environment changed once they entered the region known as Waterfall. From the snowy tundra of Snowdin, to a calm and glistening ponds and rivers of Waterfall, glistening only from the reflections of the jewels of ore and diamonds that were like stars upon the ceiling of the Underground. Lily pads among the water, flowing down the rivers or staying where they laid. It wasn't as cold in this region as it was in Waterfall, much more bearable then Snowdin. Papyrus had left them at the entrance, and Sans would be soon found at a station similar to the one in Snowdin that they saw when they first came there. "I… Thought you said you had to go back on duty." Chloe would say as she looked at the short skeleton with a confused look on her face. "i have multiple jobs. helps to pay the bills, and get some gifts for papyrus when his birthday comes." The two keyblade wielders glanced at one another when he said that, and Rick couldn't help but look at Sans questioningly. "I take it then we're on the right path towards Frisk?" "yep. though i wouldn't dawdle for long, so be a good duck and waddle on." Rick had to force himself not to grin even a little at the bad pun, while Chloe just let out a small giggle before placing a hand on Rick's shoulder, "Come on, we better get going."
The two would quickly make their way through, finding an area where lily pads were already placed to make a makeshift bridge to get across. Something they took notice of was some of the monsters they came across, they looked as though they could attack the two, but none tried… "I guess being grouped up as we are gives an advantage of not being attacked." Chloe would comment as she noticed one monster that looked like… A washing machine with a turtle's head and a bird in its well? "They've already seen Frisk come through here, one human by themselves is one thing, two together, probably scared we'll gang up on them." Rick would respond as they made their way deeper.
Entering a room, they found what appeared to be big blue flowers that were… whispering… muttering. "What… Sort of flowers are these?" Rick would ask as he walked up to one of the flowers. "This is an Echo Flower. It repeats the last thing it heard over and over again… Neat, huh?" Rick backed up a bit from the flower that spoke, as he looked at Chloe before looking at the flower, "Hello?" "This is an Echo Flower. It repeats the last thing it heard over and over again… Neat, huh?" The flower would repeat as Chloe looked over the flower, "So… They repeat things they last heard… Interesting." Chloe would say as she was examining the flower for a moment before they walked over, noticing the room they were in had five of these Echo Flowers. "I never heard of a flower that could repeat things it heard… But then again Flowey's one that talks." "Except these don't look like they would throw… Happiness Pellets, at us for our hearts… SOULs… To kill us." Rick would respond as he started to walk over to a corridor and noticed a hole in the wall ahead. "Looks like we can keep going through there." Chloe would make her way to him and saw the hole as well, "Think Frisk may have gone that way?" She'd ask as Rick already started walking towards the entrance. "If I was lost and trying to get out of here, I'd explore all options."
From the otherside of the hole in the wall, where the Wishing Room was, they took a few steps out before being on the deck of a wooden platform. Under it they could hear the water and on either side they could see cat tail plants coming out from the water where it was shallow. On a wall were a few plaques that as they got closer, told a tale… "The war between Humans and Monsters.." Rick would read the first one as Chloe walked to the second, despite the language being different, they were able to read some of it as Chloe read, "Why did the humans attack? Indeed it seems that they had nothing to fear… Is this…. How am I..?" "The Keyblade." Rick would quickly say as he turned to walk closer to Chloe, "More than likely it's translating the writing for us.. Where we can read it." "Can it really do that?" "I… Believe so… At least that which it can." Rick would reply as they continued to read through some of the ancient writings, "Humans of this world must be really strong… To take every monster to go up against a single soul.." Chloe would say as she walked to the next plaque, "And yet… This says that the same power is also their weakness…" The text would explain how apparently the human SOUL could persist after death, and this had Rick thinking as he crossed his arms, "Normally when a powerful being is slain, and if their heart is strong, they would become a Heartless…" "But yet… Look here, if a Monster defeats a Human, they can take their SOUL…" Chloe would read off as they slowly walked down the wall, reading the plaques. "I guess this world… Runs on a different set of rules.." "Rules?" Chloe would ask, looking at Rick. "So.. As best as I can remember…" Rick would begin to explain, "Most worlds run on some of the same common rules, and especially when it comes to the Heartless. When you die, your HEART leaves your body and comes to risk being exposed to Darkness. Once exposed, you're turned into a Heartless. At least your Heart does. Your body remains as an empty shell, and either wilts away, or becomes a similar creature known as a Nobody… Pretty sure I explained this before."
Chloe would blink as she thought back to when the Heartless invaded her world. "But if this world runs on a different set of rules as you say, then does that mean that any of these monsters could absorb a person's Heart?" Chloe would ask as she looked over, glancing at a monster that was nearby watching them. "I suppose… But it's odd. They call the Hearts SOULS… Is it.. The same… Or some special ability that lies deep within their Heart that gives them such power?" Rick would glance over at the last plaque as it depicts a creature that was strange and yet, unsettling.. "Come on, let's move on." "On that?" Chloe asked while pointing out to what looked like a small raft that led across the water. "Well… We'll go one at a time. I can go first if you like." Rick offered as he noticed that Chloe seemed a little hesitant. "S-sure…" He gave Chloe a reassuring smile before going to step onto the raft, and the second he was fully onboard it started to move. He stood there for a moment, as it seemed to go smoothly through the water. "This isn't so bad!" He'd call out to Chloe as it continued on for a few minutes before coming up to a dock on the other side. "Now… How to get you back to Chloe..?" He'd ask almost to himself as he stepped off, and it started to make a return trip. "Oh… That's convenient… And unsettling." He'd comment before calling out to Chloe. "Hey! It's coming back to you!"
Chloe heard Rick calling out to her, and noticed something moving in the water. She waited a few minutes, and saw it was the small raft that Rick took across. "Okay… If he made it across fine, then… But what if…" She started to look around a little, having that feeling of someone behind her as the raft slowly approached. Soon as she turned around she saw the monster from early as it approached her. "H-hi…. Hey there." She'd say as she watched it slowly walk up to her. It said "Green means clean." as it continued to shuffle over to her. Chloe took a step back, and tripped just as the raft came up behind her, letting out a loud cry.. She fell on her behind and as soon as she was on the raft, it began to move away from the dock carrying her towards the otherside. She watched as the strange monster stood there watching her move away, taking this moment to breathe as she sat there before hearing Rick call out to her, "Are you alright!?" "Fine! I-I'm fine! Just…. One of them startled me!" She'd call back to him, feeling the raft continuing to move all on its own. Chloe decided not to try and stand up until she reached her destination, just in case the water got choppy and risked falling into the water..
Soon enough she saw the dock on the other side, and saw her friend standing there waiting for her. When the raft came to a stop, he reached out to help her stand and off the raft, to which it once again made a return trip back to the other side. "I guess we would need to find a different path to get back to Snowdin… If we wanted to go back that way." Rick would say as Chloe brushed herself off. "I think I prefer someplace not quite as cold." She'd say as they looked down the path ahead, a long windy wooden bridge with pillars on one side, and cat tails on the other. "Let's be careful on our way down." Rick says as he begins to make his way down the wooden path.
All she could do was run, Frisk was jumping around dodging spears that came out of the ground as more came flying at her from the air. She was on the wooden bridges that were over the falls, where she remembered the area of garbage was. She jumped back as a blue magical spear suddenly came up in front of her, too close, if she was a step close the spear would have impaled her. "Almost there!" She'd sprint towards one direction, then another as she moved from platform to platform, trying to stay ahead as it seemed like Undyne was getting closer and closer to impaling her with her spears. Frisk could see some of the patterns on the ground as she made her way down, trying to get to the end as quickly as she could without getting hit by any of the spears. Soon she saw the last set of platforms that lead across and away from Undyne, and ran for escape as fast as she could.
Soon as she got to the edge, she stopped and looked down at what was a pitch black abyss. Frisk would take a few steps back before turning to hear the heavy metal footsteps of Undyne walking towards her. She began to walk backwards towards the edge, and stopped when she could feel that she was at the end. "H-hey, wait! W-we can talk this out!" Frisk would call out, thinking that perhaps she could try and talk things over and maybe avoid a future fight. "L-look I haven't harmed anyone, a-and I've been nothing but kind!" "Too bad. My duty is clear… You should have jumped when you had the chance." Undyne said as four blue magic spears appeared above, and suddenly came crashing down, breaking the section of the bridge and causing Frisk to fall. The last thing she saw as she stared up at Undyne, was a flash of light as she fell down…
"The water should be shallow enough… If that ghost down there doesn't take their soul, I can catch them at the bridge before the arena." Undyne would say to herself as she let out a sigh, "Papyrus… Why do you have to-" At that moment she heard her cell phone begin to ring. Taking it out of her pocket, she saw it was from Papyrus before answering. "Hello?"
"GREETINGS UNDYNE! IT IS I PAPYRUS! UM JUST WANTED TO FIND OUT, DID YOU MANAGED TO CAPTURE THE HUMANS YET?" Undyne let out a sigh as she heard his voice, "No I haven't, and if you've done your job like you were supposed to, I wouldn't have to be chasing this lil brat all over Waterfall!" She stopped herself from getting too loud as she was starting to feel annoyed. "It's fine though, I have them cornered, I'll be making the capture here soon." "O-OH THAT'S WONDERFUL! I KNEW YOU WERE COOL AND AWESOME, THE BEST OUT THERE! BUT UM THAT'S JUST THE ONE HUMAN, RIGHT?" "Yes of course it… is…. Papyrus…" "YES UNDYNE?" "Earlier… You said Humans…. HUMANS… Plural…" "UM…. NO….YES…. WELL…" Undyne's grip on her cell became tighter, so much so that the screen on her phone began to crack a little. "Papyrus…. How many more humans showed up in Snowdin?" "WELL UM YOU SEE UNDYNE….." "How… Many?" There was almost a deafening silence before Papyrus finally answered. "TWO." CRACK! "TWO!? HOW DID TWO MORE HUMANS SUDDENLY SHOW UP AND GOT PASS BOTH YOU!? AND YOUR BROTHER!? WHAT!? WAS SANS HAVING ANOTHER ONE OF HIS NAPS AND YOU TOO BUSY COOKING A MEAL!? ARE YOU TELLING ME THERE ARE NOW THREE HUMANS IN THE UNDERGROUND!?" "N-N-NOW UNDYNE PLEASE, CALM DOWN! I-I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE OTHER HUMANS UNTIL AFTER I GOT BACK FROM TALKING WITH YOU."
Undyne could feel her blood boiling, more than that, she could feel her soul resonating as she listened to Papyrus speak. "Did they go straight to Waterfall?" She would ask, hearing the nervous skeleton breath out a "YES…" "Good… Tell me, what they look like… And DON'T leave out any details…
