Holly had been back in Toronto at the medical examiner's office for just over a month, and things were going so much better than she had expected. She even had plans to have a dinner date with Gail this evening after work.
After almost three years away, she was surprised to discover that Gail had not only made detective, but was in charge of a task force for the special victims unit investigation crimes against children. Not that she didn't think Gail was capable. Gail was more than capable to do the job well. She was one of the smartest, most meticulous people Holly had ever met, when she wanted to be. However, she also excelled at hiding just how intelligent, caring, observant, and good at her job she actually was. Holly knew all that, but she was surprised that Gail would have accepted the promotion to detective, never mind accepting a leadership position. Gail had made it clear to Holly, she wanted nothing to do with anything that would make people think she might have advanced her career through nepotism instead of earning her way. During the short time they had been close, before Holly left, she had watched Gail turn down two commendations, and one request for her to become an acting junior homicide detective. But a lot, or so it seemed, had changed in her absence, not just with Gail but with the entire Toronto Police Department, and especially Division Fifteen! So much change no one would talk about, but Holly could feel buzzing just below the surface, just out of her reach.
The biggest surprise and change had been in Gail herself. Holly had been prepared to have to hunt down her elusive ex, but there she was on Holly's second day back holding two cups of coffee and asking if they could talk. The conversation began on the rooftop, continued over Thai food at a tiny resturant near her townhouse, and ended with Gail kissing her goodnight on her doorstep instead of staying the night. That was certainly different, and in a good way. They had really talked, about everything that had happened with them before, and what they felt for each other. And now they were dating again, taking things slow, and spending three or four nights a week together. She couldn't believe how lucky she was!
She had gotten out of her last case early, and decided to surprise Gail by bringing her coffee from her favorite cafe. She was just about to turn the corner and knock on Gail's office door, when she heard Gail talking to someone. She couldn't believe her ears! She felt herself flush with dismay as her heart began pounding so hard she thought she might pass out.
"You are so beautiful!" Gail moaned, "Mmmmm… I can't believe I found you. So perfect, so incredible. "
Who was Gail talking to? Holly wondered. They hadn't exactly defined their relationship yet, but Holly was under the impression that they were being exclusively together. She wanted to turn and run and hide, but her feet felt like they were glued to the floor and wouldn't obey her.
"I can't wait to devour you!" Gail continued, " I'm so excited I can barely stand it. I can't believe we've never done this before. You're making my mouth water. I can't wait to taste you!"
Holly felt sick. She could barely stand to listen to any more of this, but she couldn't seem to tear herself away. She didn't hear a response. Was Gail having phone sex with someone else? She couldn't believe that Gail would cheat on her like this!
"Oh my god!" Gail moaned again, "You're so naughty, dripping all over my pants! Let me suck you into my mouth, and clean you up with my tongue."
It made her sad to think that Gail never talked dirty to her like this. And if she was having phone sex, why had Gail broken up with her when they could have tried long distance? She could hear Gail's moans accompanying some loud, wet, slurping noises.
"Mmmmmm… so good!" Gail growled in the sexiest low voice Holly had ever hear her use, "I've been so hungry… and you feel so good inside of me! So much better than I had ever dreamed! I could never share you with anyone…. "
This was too much! And at work too! Sure they had made out like Horney teenagers in interrogation rooms, and in Holly's office, but it had never gone this far!
"Oh yeah!" Gail cried out, and Holly's heart broke a little more. "Mmmmm… we've been so bad. I really want to do this with you again, but I'm supposed to be meeting Holly for dinner, in like an hour. She'll be so upset if she finds out…"
The mention of her name made Holly snap out of her stupor. She couldn't take it any more! How could she have been so stupid? Bursting through the door, she couldn't believe her eyes! There was Gail, frozen, staring at her with eyes as big as saucers, her fingers in her mouth, looking guilty as hell. The box on her lap said Sanremo. Gail swallowed thickly.
"Holly. Hey!" She greeted her in her most fake, cheery voice, "What are you doing here so early?"
Holly looked down at the forgotten coffees she was still clutching, and motioned at Gail with them. "Gail, what are you doing?"
"Ummmm… nothing?" Gail smiled fakely at her.
"Gail!" Holly tilted her head and sighed.
"Ok, ok.. so I know we are supposed to have dinner together," Gail fidgeted under Holly's glare, "But Oliver brought me a box of Nutella Banana, and Strawberries and cream Zeppoles from Sanremo Bakery. And they're like donuts on steroids.."
She turned the box to show Holly the decedent, cream filled confections.
"Oh, Gail." Holly began to laugh.
"Want one?" Gail asked sheepishly
"I thought you could never share them with anyone." Holly retorted.
"Well," Gail smirked, "You're not just anyone."
"Oh really." Holly replied.
"Uh huh." Gail said, her grin growing wider, "And besides, you brought coffee."
