Author's Additional Notes: I originally wrote this story in 2010 as a teenager with not a lot of writing experience and after re-reading it recently, I decided to rewrite it, slightly changing the storyline and fixing up the writing style. Voldemort's return to power does not exist in this fan fiction world, so events that occur within the original books will not be tied into this story. In this rewrite of the story, I removed the non-con/rape element, as it didn't fit with the story's flow and was uncomfortable for too many readers, as well as me, the author. This story has an incredibly slow burn, I apologise, but falling in love takes time!
Falling in Love with Draco Malfoy

CHAPTER 1
It was September 1st. The Hogwarts Express had gracefully departed from Kings Cross Station, chugging its way through the scenic countryside. In a cabin halfway down the train, Hermione shared a revelation with her two closest friends, Harry and Ron, about a new student joining Hogwarts this year. Ron nearly choked on his pumpkin juice at the unexpected news.
"Your cousin? I had no idea you had relatives!" Harry exclaimed, his curiosity piqued. "What's her name? What's she like?"
Hermione looked out the window, taking in the peaceful countryside and wondering if her sixth year at Hogwarts would be just as peaceful once her cousin arrived.
"Her name is Scarlett. She'll be in the year below us and she's quite witty. She wrote to me a few days ago and she's not happy about changing schools." Hermione went on to explain the reason for her changing schools - although Scarlett was clever, she was also witty, getting herself into trouble often and had minimal respect for those above her. Because of this, her grades had started slipping drastically. Her parents felt that if she were to live with Hermione for a year and attend the same school, Scarlett's ways might change. Hermione wasn't so sure.
"Is Scarlett on the train?" Ron inquired. Whilst his feelings for Hermione were deep, he was excited at the opportunity to get to know her relative as he'd never met anyone from her family.
"No, she's being dropped off at Hogsmeade Station so I suppose we shall see her at dinner. I'm off to go get changed into my robes, I suggest you two do the same soon," replied Hermione, standing up and leaving the cabin.
Day turned to evening and the Hogwarts Express pulled into Hogsmeade. Just as Hermione had predicted, the trio did indeed see Scarlett at dinner. Standing tall above the rest of the first year students waiting to be sorted, she was not hard to miss. Black and white high top converse adorned her feet, peeking out from underneath her robes. Her uniform was pristine, however, an assortment of shiny lapel pins flashed on her jumper, showing other students what sort of things she liked. There was a chocolate frog pin and an Appleby Arrows pin too. Her skin was fair, a few freckles here and there on her cheeks. Her dark brown hair had a red tinge to it, perhaps as a result of being dyed red many times before, cascaded over her shoulders.
"Granger, Scarlett," called Professor McGonagall and Scarlett stepped up to the stool where the Sorting Hat waited. It was placed atop her head and its voice rang through the Great Hall.
"Ahh.. another Granger! Starting a little late, aren't we? Perhaps you'd do well with your cousin, or perhaps… you'd do well in a different house, hmm?" Scarlett did not know what she wanted, her uncertain gaze meeting Hermione's halfway down the Gryffindor table. Before she could say a word, the hat declared its answer, almost as if it read her mind.
"GRYFFINDOR!" Applause erupted from most of the students as Scarlett made her way towards Hermione and sat down next to her. Hermione hugged her with a bright smile on her face.
"Scarlett! How are you?" she asked, picking up a bread roll to butter.
"I'm good! Gosh there are a lot of faces here, will I have to learn all of them?" Scarlett replied with curiosity. Hermione shook her head, taking a small bite of her roll. A boy with jet black hair and glasses, sat opposite Hermione, his green eyes staring at Scarlett. He extended his hand to shake hers.
"I'm Harry, Harry Potter. This is Ron Weasley, our best friend." Scarlett's eyes widened as she realised she was shaking hands with the famous wizard she had heard about since she was a small child.
"I can't believe I'm actually meeting you! Is it okay if I pick your brains later about Hogwarts? It's massive compared to my previous school, and being a fifth year, I'd like to not stand out," Scarlett gushed with nerves. The trio nodded their heads and they all tucked into their dinner. By the time Scarlett had emptied her plate of sausages, mash, peas and gravy, the dishes on the table cleared and were replaced with an assortment of desserts - jelly, trifle, pavlova, ice cream and even cakes! This is wonderful! I wish I'd come here as a first year, Scarlett thought to herself as she carefully selected some treats.
Professor Dumbledore stood and announced for the prefects to come to the front to receive their prefect badge. Eight people across the hall rose, including Scarlett's cousin and Ron. One by one, their prefect badge was pinned to their collar and they stood at the edge of the steps in front of everyone. Scarlett looked up to see who she needed to be careful of in the hallways, and almost choked on her spoonful of trifle. Who the FUCK is that gorgeous man?! I'll break every rule just to cross paths with him. Harry gave her a puzzled look and she gulped her mouthful of food.
"Who is that? Next to Hermione?" Scarlett whispered, her eyes drawn to a tall, slender boy with platinum blonde hair, silver eyes and a stern expression. There was a girl on the other side of him, holding his hand and beaming. She had fair skin, short brown hair and was pug-faced.
"That's Draco Malfoy," spat Harry. Scarlett immediately sensed hatred and wasn't sure if it was her place to ask him further details. Harry seemed to read her mind and continued on.
"He's been our enemy since we all began here in our first year. He's cruel, a bully and goes out of his way to cause trouble. I can't believe he's a prefect, he's going to make our lives miserable." Yikes, maybe I should be careful around him, she thought, but shook her head slightly, as if to say to herself she needed to get his attention, fast. She spotted the girl clinging to Draco's arm looking longingly at him, and felt a pang of jealousy.
"Who is the girl next to him? Holding his hand?" she tried to ask innocently.
"Pansy Parkinson. Also cruel, they've been dating for about a year and a half now." Harry didn't seem to notice the obvious look of disappointment on Scarlett's face as she returned to eating her trifle. Hermione and Ron rejoined the table and enjoyed dessert before it was bedtime.
On the walk to the Gryffindor common room, Hermione sensed Scarlett's unease. She gently touched Scarlett's shoulder and asked her if everything was okay, especially as this was her first night in a huge castle.
"I'm okay, just really tired from today," Scarlett answered with a weak smile, unsure if she should mention her instant attraction to the biggest jerk in the school. Hermione didn't probe any further, but she could tell Scarlett wasn't being truthful. Finally, they reached the entrance to the common room and Hermione introduced Scarlett to everyone before showing her her dormitory. She left Scarlett to get settled with the other fifth year girls, and soon Scarlett was lying in her new bed, her mind replaying the scene from dinner. Draco Malfoy… who are you? she wondered as she drifted off to sleep.
