Chapter 3: Hero's Journey

Winslow high

Henry Drew

I hate mondays. The week started anew and I barely got things done yesterday. I've been looking around the docks and managed to find an old maintenance facility at the shipyard. Fun fact about those, they need to pump out water from the chamber the boat docks in, and they have an underground reservoir for that. I thought that that might be useful when it came to quenching…

I managed to break into the maintenance shafts and got into the area. It definitely needs some cleaning, and maybe an air filtration system, but it seems suitable to me. Besides, the first kilns and smelter I will be making will be extremely primitive. If I get some money, and the ability to buy things anonymously, I might be able to get an industrial steel oven or something.

That would be cool.

There was a worry about this technically being ABB Territory, but I want to take my chances for now. As long as I don't make it too obvious that someone is here, I might remain hidden… Or I could try to take down the ABB…or have someone remove bits of their territory.

But yeah, powers. My powers so far have been rather interesting to learn. It boiled down to a lot of stranger, mover and technically striker abilities. Not to mention the master ability I still needed to test, and I guess the thinker ability I have that allows me to just see who might be a Parahuman.

I definitely need to be careful with the entire set. Honestly, such a grab bag case feels downright impossible. Not to mention that most parahuman abilities usually don't come with Lore and memory fragments, as far as I know, at least.

I would prefer learning more about them rather than sitting in class, but things just are like that. Mr Gladly was prattling on about…whatever subject we had this week. I admit, I try to pay attention in class typically, but I really couldn't be bothered today.

Winslow was a shitshow and any diploma I got from this place is now overshadowed by the fact that I'm a Parahuman. I will be honest, I don't want to be a hero. I don't want to be some big-time villain either. Like the E88 and their bullshit. I don't have any ideals or philosophical bullshit, as so many others do.

I care about myself. And that means Money. Everything else is secondary. For now, figuring out how to get it is a main concern. Selling any Tinker gear I produce is a definite option, but the question remains if that is viable in the long term. To my knowledge, Independent Tinker's fade away rather quickly, leading me to believe they either quit the game, get recruited under a different name, or that they simply die.

I am not aiming for any of those outcomes. As thoughts take me to previous tinkers that tried to strike out on their own, I can't help but rub the iron ring currently on one of my hands. It only scrapes the surface of what I could potentially do. I didn't even forge the ring myself. It's a cheap thing I bought from a pawn shop and then personally engraved. The runes apparently mean, "Rejuvenation" and "Enhancement".

I haven't been able to test its capabilities that much, but considering I only got 2 hours of sleep last night and still feel fine, I guess it's definitely doing something. Concerning the enhancement? It seems like its a passive effect that makes me just slightly better at everything. Slightly faster reactions, a bit stronger, that sort of thing.

Undoubtedly an improvement. I can't imagine what sort of items I'll be able to make later on. Especially when the runic enchantments are used for entire sentences rather than single worded concepts.

The memories I have seem to indicate that Rings were the primary product made with this sort of "Magic" but theoretically, more could be done. A Mace, an armour, maybe even more. The fact that my Tinker Tech seems to be focused on primitive technology doesn't seem as big as an issue any more. I don't even think this really is tinker Tech any more, if I'm being honest.

But those thoughts can wait. The bell just rang and that means that I can finally eat something. I had skipped breakfast, which I honestly regretted. As I pull out a sandwich from my backpack, I make an effort to conceal my eyes with a baseball cap that I had brought along today. I also angle my arm on the table in front of me to further obscure my face.

Why? So I can use my wraith sight, of course. As my vision changes, I inspect the surrounding classroom. White silhouettes of other students became visible and to my glee, I could see them through the walls as well. This skill just keeps getting better and better.

The other point of interest for me was the fact that apparently wards attended the school. I wasn't out to expose them, but it would be nice to know which students to avoid in the future…. Those were my thoughts initially.

It changed when I actually detected two parahumans not even that far away. And I recognized their shapes, as people kinda recognized them around here.

Sophia Hess and Taylor fucking Hebert. That is one hell of a mindfuck to me. How the hell does a Cape get bullied? I'm not questioning the fact that someone is bullying her, but rather, how the hell has she not reacted violently yet. It's like being harassed while having a loaded gun in your pocket.

Though, that could mean that her ability wasn't the best. Looking at the two with a bit more focus, I got the description for their powers.

Sophia Hess had an interesting description all right.

A hunter in the shape of fog held within the veneer of a mortal, a cloud projected by fear and foolhardy enforced by their power to take the lives of those considered protected.

It was a shorter description than what I got with Battery, but it sort of makes sense as it is less power to describe. After that, the rest was just common sense and some critical thinking as I ate my sandwich. Sophia is in the ward age group. She has a breaker state of some kind that allows her to turn into fog, or she can make fog.

This already lowered the list of suspects down to one. Shadow Stalker. The fact that she used to be a violent rogue before joining the PRT also fits with her personality. And…Her being a ward and the school probably being aware of this to allow her to slip out of school during emergencies… That's probably why she got away with so much shit. Yeah, that's fucked up and I don't really wanna think of it anymore.

The bell rang and students poured into the classroom once more. I remained seated and took out my phone to access PHO. I made a new account yesterday and may as well use it to start a thread asking a few things.

I started a thread with a question and spent the rest of the class trying to at least look like I paid attention. Before long, the last few classes came to an end and it was time for the students to leave.

I pull out my phone again and begin reading the thread I made a few hours ago.

Posted on April 6, 2011:

So, I have a question concerning an incident that happened a while back during the start of January.

A girl who was being bullied for a while was shoved and locked into her school locker and nearly died because of it. I've listed the full details here -

I did leave out the details of who it is and where the school is located, as I don't accidentally want to break any laws.

My main question right now is, wouldn't bigger response from law enforcement been appropriate? The cops were maybe around for a day and nothing ever really got investigated. The bullies are still harassing the girl in question.

So can anyone concretely tell me if I'm expecting too much from the American justice system or if something is actually fishy here?

Well, that was a load of useless. I really should have worded things a bit better. Or just googled things instead… Though, it does seem like someone sent me a PM. I open it up and am glad to hear that it's someone actually trying to help. I begin chatting with him as I make my way to the School's entrance.

Private message from I'mALawyer:

I'mALawyer: So, the thread is locked, but I still want to help out.

Sorry for the DM but what happened is fucked, and incredibly suspicious. Are you completely sure an investigation or a lawsuit is not underway?

Gravewalker: Pretty certain. it's been weeks and the cops haven't shown themselves since the incident...And as i hinted at. I know for a fact that one of the perpetrators is a parahuman.

I'mALawyer: Im guessing that's got something to do with something to do with the unverified cape tag you have. I won't pry too much on that.

With things as you described, then something very weird is going on.

How long was the material in the locker, and what was it exactly

Was it sewage? Trash? Something worse?

Gravewalker: Used Tampons, feminine hygene products. all used up and left to stew for over 2 weeks.

I'mALawyer: Filling the Locker with Waste product and letting them stay there to a degree that they gain toxic properties and or mold does fall into the definition of Bio Terrorrisim. You also mentioned that the girl had infected wounds and barely survived them.

This should have at the very least warranted an FBI investigation and normal police should have locked down the ares if not the entire school.

Technically, the PRT has jurisdiction over any and all parahuman crime, so it makes sense for the cops not to show up on certain occasions.

What doesn't make sense is for the PRT not to show up either. This sounds less like a proper investigation and more like sweeping things under the rug.

Gravewalker: I see. That's definitely not very relieving to hear...

Thanks again for the help.

I'mALawyer: No worries there.

And tell you what. If you ever find yourself on the wrong side of the law, give me a call will you?

(505) 503-4455

…Wow, a lawyer…. Cool.

I quickly insert the number in an online phone book and realize, to my surprise, that it isn't fake. It's to an office led by someone called Quinn Calle. He apparently specializes in criminal defence along with with parahuman Law…. Damn, didn't expect that.

But enough of that. It was getting late and I had better things to do. One of them was to wait at the entrance and wait for a certain person to finally walk out.

Taylor Hebert, looking worse for wear. I guess the others got some crap into her hair again and what not. Her bag certainly looked like it got some punishment. I'm unsure how I want to handle this, the only thing that matters is that I don't make her an enemy.

The Description I got about her powers earlier certainly convinced me of that.

The queen who rules from her tower, a swarm of those that crawl unseen and skitter in shadows fall under her domain. An impossible task to command without the mind to serve as the will of thousands.

First issue here, there are no known capes that this could apply to in Brockton. So she hasn't done any Super Hero or Villain stuff yet. So there's a chance she's trying to do something similar to me.

The ability itself is rather worrying as well. Does she control shadows, some invisible gremlins, Bugs or even bacteria? What about the second part, the command and mind part. It certainly seems like she could possibly turn herself into a hive mind then. I'm unsure what to think.

As I start moving towards her, she stops for a second before turning towards me. The Suspicion on her face is very clear. We have no reason for interacting. We don't share classes, have common denominators, or anything of the sort. The only thing that could connect us is the fact that Emma flirted with me on occasion.

I can see her body steady itself in case she suddenly wanted to bolt away. I on the other hand lazily raise a hand and simply say, "Mind if we talked for a bit?"

She looked on with suspicion, so I simply continued, "Look, I just want a minute of your time to talk in private." as I pointed towards the PE area.

To my relief, she gives a curt nod as I lead her away towards a secluded section of the school.

Before long, we arrive at our destination and I turn towards the younger girl. As I open my mouth to say something, she promptly interrupts me herself, "Did Emma put you up to this?" she spits out with an almost calm tone. It feels like she wanted to put in an extra accusation, but she refrained at the last moment.

"Emma has been trying to convince me of things for a long time. I don't really care about what the bitch says." I simply utter in response. Her expression gained a hint of confusion. Understandable really.

"I'm sure you may be thinking she has something I want and am now somehow tricking you to get it." her body seizes up for a second before her calm demeanour resumes. She's definitely good at hiding her emotions at least.

When I notice she isn't about to say something, I continue, "Look, I admit that I have no idea really as to how to even broach the subject… But it hardly has anything to do with what those girls are doing to you….Well, a little bit.."I pull on my collar for a moment before asking her another question, "You never fight back. You barely even talk back when they do what they do…And I guess that's probably because the school takes their side…I'm just wondering why…if that's the reason or if-"

"I just want it to end… I don't want…"

She interrupts me with a quiet breath. I'm unsure of what to make of it. She looks way more shaken up than I expected.

I…I pause for a moment to really think about it. Parahumans have their trigger events, and these are literally Traumatic memories to them. And I'm pretty fucking sure that the locker incident triggered Her.

I let out a small sigh and promptly say "You know what… Let's get out of here. You have any plans for dinner?"

As expected, her eyes widen and she let out a stutter,"Are you….what?

I move closer to her "Do you need to go home immediately or do you have some time, is what I'm asking."

Her feet seem a bit shaky as i close the distance "I…My dad is working late so-"

That's good enough for me. "Then let's go. I ain't a fan of Winslow myself. You prefer Chinese or Pizza?"

I say as I grab her hand and promptly pull her along out of school bounds, making my way towards Downtown.

Fugly Bobs, Brockton Bay

Taylor Hebert

The mind of Taylor Hebert was buzzing with a single question,"Was I just coerced into a date?"

It was safe to say that she was still thoroughly confused. She didn't say much as she was manhandled through town, even though she really just wanted to ask,"Why?". She was certain she never shared a single word with Henry. She only knew his name because he was the target of a lot of girls affection in school, including Em-...

So why was he interested in her now? He never reciprocated the advances of anyone, so she did doubt this was some kind of elaborate prank now…But could she be so sure?

Eventually, they stopped at a nearby intersection and he turned to her where he simply asked," Actually, I only asked about chinese or pizza. You wanna go for a burger instead?"

She wasn't sure what her answer was, but she did recall maybe giving a small nod in return. That's how they found themselves in Fugly Bob's with an order of Cheeseburgers and large Cokes sitting in one of the booths of the diner.

Henry actually paid for their meal which only solidified her confusion on the whole situation.

She had been keeping an eye out with her bugs this entire time, and the Trio was nowhere in sight. They weren't here, nor anyone else from school that might try to trick her.

Henry was the first to break the silence as he took a bite from his burger and made a slight frown. "Say, is it just me or was there a dip in quality with these? I swear they tasted better 2 weeks ago."

Taylor wasn't too sure how to answer that. The only real time she ever went out to eat was with her dad on the account that she…was a bit lacking in the friend department. Even so, she slowly stated," I..Im not sure, they taste the same to me?"

Henry lets out a small sigh before his eyes widen for a moment as he takes another bite. He quickly gulps down the piece before saying, "Now that I think about it, it sorta makes sense. My sense of taste has taken a hit since I Triggered."

"Oh, I mean, that can-" Taylor not really paying that much attention to the conversation and already had a reply prepared…which completely flew out the window once she processed what he said.

Her eyes widened like saucers as she went dead silent. She immediately shunted off her feelings to her nearby bugs and slowly considered just what to do now. What was a friendly outing was now a possible Cape fight…But how did he know? Does he even know about her? Is he doing this for someone else? Maybe to threaten her dad? Just what-

Her thoughts are interrupted by the sudden snapping of fingers in front of her,"Whatever you are thinking, I swear you are overthinking it. I just wanted to talk."

She still wasn't sure what to make of this, but slowly nodded. He then continued, "I admit, I'm no social expert. I thought if I casually dropped it like that, it would go over easier."

"Easier? If anything, it's worse! How exactly is saying you-" She stopped herself when she noticed her volume had risen and a few of the other customers were staring at the pair. She quickly shrunk back into her seat as Henry started to talk once more.

"I mean, I took a public location to assure you I wouldn't try anything…I really didn't come here for a fight either. I think you might have me beat on that." Her words bring her mind to a halt once more.

He knew…

"How?" she asked with a whispered tone.

Henry only pointed to his eyes as he stated, "Pretty Bullshit Thinker Power. My eyes light up and I can pick out Capes in a crowd with a small description of what their powers do…I'm also a Tinker on the side, but we don't have to get into that now."

She considered his words and slowly asked, "Then why approach me. Exposing a Cape's identity is a terrible way to introduce yourself and I won't just roll over if you try and blackmail me. Just as you know who I am, I know who…" She stopped her mouth as she finished her train of thoughts.

He had no reason to expose himself to her if he had malicious intent. No, this was something to build up trust.

"What…What exactly did you want out of this conversation Henry?" she asked with an unsure tone.

He shrugs his shoulders for a moment, "To test the waters with another Cape initially, but really? I could do with a partner."

The answer confused her and just as she wanted to suggest, "And before you say anything about the wards or PRT. I want to be a rogue, use my powers to ensure I have a good future. Not fighting or enlisting with the government. So when I see a Cape who is neither villain or Hero, I thought it try to see if they could be a friend."

"A Friend?" she asks, wanting him to clarify what he meant.

"A friend. A partner in crime, or heroism, that works too. As in, I wouldn't judge you if you did either… Well except if you go full S-Class."He pauses for a moment before nodding, "But you get the idea…I want someone to watch my back. And in return, I'll have their back. "

"And that's why you approached me…" she slowly stated.

"Yeah, This isn't exactly a prank, but I'm not here for the goodness of my heart. But I don't plan on forcing you either. You can walk away and pretend this entire thing never happened." He raised his hands in mock surrender. A gesture of goodwill.

If Taylor was being honest…She heard the risk of going at it alone as a Cape. She wasn't exactly against the idea…So maybe it's ok to try?

"...I…I control Bugs. Every bug within a sizable range…I'm not really sure on the best way to apply them, but I do want to be a hero." she stammers out.

He doesnt let out any judgemental tone and simply nods, "Noble goal. I don't plan on going out myself that much, but could help make you a costume…and weapons if you want."

That sounded really good honestly, "Seriously, now it just sounds like you're bribing me." she says with a hint of a smile.

A smile that he returns tenfold, "And is it working?"

As a warm feeling bubbled up in her chest, she answered "Just a little bit."

But her short happiness is broken when she considers another issue. She pauses for a moment as she asks, "What about school…"

"What do you mean?" He asks, not quite sure what she was getting at.

She continued "Is it ok if I talk with you… I mean, I get it if you'd prefer not to be seen with-"her words are promptly interrupted.

"None of that… Look, Taylor, I really don't give a crap about school drama. Or my reputation there. I graduate in a year, any damages to my Reputation aren't important…So yeah, if you wanna talk or hang out in school, I won't shoo you away." the last words were accompanied by another smile, and she honestly understood why so many girls had a crush on him.

"I ah…Thank you.."she answers with another whisper.

"So is that a yes, on being Parabuddies?"

She couldn't help let out a snort as she said,"Please don't let that be the name"

With a joking tone, he says "It's a work in progress, heck, we don't even have to be public friends as Capes. It keeps a flair of mystery around us."

"I mean…I guess? "Taylor answered as another question came to her mind. Considering they were devolving back to small talk, she couldn't help but ask,"Did you plan past this stage, with me agreeing and all that?"

Now it was his time to chuckle, "Taylor, I didn't even plan for this stage or the last 3, I'm making shit up as I go."

She couldn't help but chuckle at that. She definitely misjudged Henry. To think that the aloof student known across school was so…approachable.

"But on that note. You have a suit or something you'd like me to take a look on?" He asks, pulling her out of her thoughts once more.

She thinks for a moment before deciding to say, "I mean…I've been using spider's and other bugs to make something, but it's still a work in progress."

He gives another nod, "I see… Well, I'm still working on my… Workshop as it is, but how does this weekend sound?"

"I mean…sure!" She said with a light smile. The idea of having a tinker help her out definitely sounded appealing.

"Good. you mentioned you were living with your dad, so me coming over might be a bit of a bad idea. Especially if he doesn't know." He looks at Taylor for confirmation and she quickly nods her head.

"Yeah, I guess we're going to my lair then." He pulled a pen and a notepad from his backpack before writing down an address and handing it to her.

"This is…this is in the middle of ABB Territory."

He shakes his head in agreement, "Actually good point. Let's meet up beforehand so you don't get jumped on the way"

She stared at his face with a deadpan expression, "I was more concerned with the fact that you are hiding under their nose."

His eyes widen for a second as he states, "Oh that…I mean, every speck of this city is part of someone's territory. And I really do have a good hiding spot, trust me."

She decides to shelve the thought for now and asks, "I guess….So, I guess Saturday? Is 11 ok with you? I run in the mornings and I take a bit extra on weekends."

He gives a lazy nod, "I usually sleep in any way, so don't be early on my account." He looks around for a moment before the two of them leave the diner. As they are standing outside, he asks, "The time works for me, as I plan on sleeping there for now…On another note, want me to walk you home?"

Her face flushed at the idea and she slowly stammered out, "No no…It's no issue. I mean…it's ah".

As if knowing her inner turmoil, he promptly flicks her on the nose before turning around," Probably for the better. I need to test out some gear tonight…Stay safe Taylor. See you tomorrow." he gives a wave.

"Yeah…see you tomorrow Henry" she slowly whispers out as she stared at his back retreating to the distance. Before long, she turned around and made her way home.

And during the trip, she couldn't help but keep a light smile on her face. It's been a while since she had a conversation like that. Sure it was serious for the most part…But it also felt nice. Casual…Not full of all the other crap she associates with school.

She just hoped that maybe…it would last.

Even while walking up the entrance of Winslow high, I still can't shake the rush that yesterday evening had been. After talking with Taylor, I decided to finally hit the town and see how decent of a Cape I am.

In addition to my ring that stems exhaustion, I added in a modified raincoat to the thing. I did cut it up a bit to resemble a cloak, but its enchantment was that it would always conceal my face, even if light was shining directly at me. I'm not sure why I wanted a cloak, or a hood in general… It just felt right if I'm honest.

A cool Helmet would be better, but I didn't really think of a knightly design there. I will definitely be going for something else there when I get to making armour for myself.

Another surprising thing yesterday was… Well, other than the Muscle memory that I shouldn't have…and the superb combat skills. I still don't know who the hell Talion was or how Sauron managed to get his memories, but I'm not complaining.

Not to mention that the bow that I can project is honestly such a great thing. The question on getting arrows for it is a bit odd, though. The Arrows seem to regenerate over time, but I can instantly recover one of them if I kill someone… I say can because it only happened once. There's probably some kind of condition that I'm missing.

But other than that. I'm doing well. The warehouse had about 20 Grand in cash and a bunch of engine and computer parts lying around. I'm not sure if those were the source of resources, but I still took them along. The last Merchant, the one that I brainwashed…Wait no. I guess dominated is a better term for it. I dominated his will and made him loyal only to me. I'm unsure of how much that affects his behaviour, but it seems pretty fine so far. He acted as a generic Merchant goon except that he called me boss now.

It was rather interesting though. Splitting his mind open like that. The resistance was minimal and it seems I also have the choice to have him give me any information I want. I can still ask him questions as he is now, but I think there's a chance that he might withhold or misdirect information.

It doesn't seem to completely invalidate the master effect but apparently, some people have been able to break the hold of domination in the past…Or were they people? From the glimpses of memories, these "Orc'' seemed like mass-produced Case 53s…Powers are weird.

Anyway, back to the Merchant. He helped me carry all the things into a truck out back. and we moved it to my "Lair". I considered having him dump all the things in an alley where I would then manually carry them into the building…But then I realized how that would look so much more suspicious compared to just parking the truck inside the loading bay instead.

I then told him to take whatever drugs he has and told him to take as many of them as he can after driving back home. That's the last I heard of him.

Hopefully, the merchants will believe he either turned on his buddies in the warehouse and decided to steal their shit, or they will be smart enough to assume they were robbed by a Cape. Either way, he won't be blabbing about things.

It was also rather interesting to realize that I could still sense that he was under my control and in which general direction he was to myself. It also proved quite useful as I could sense when he eventually overdosed and died.

The more I learn of my powers, the more interested I grow in Sauron. Especially as I can apparently make gear that will further enhance those powers. That aspect is what I really want to focus on right now, if I'm honest….What else…

Oh right. I can sorta sense if someone is looking at me, or realizing I'm present right now. I only learned this just now…As I walked into Winslow…And noticed that a fuckton of people started staring at me.

Trying not to make any outward sign that I was reacting to the stares I was getting, I simply continued on. What was happening… Did I get outed already? Did the Warehouse yesterday have camera surveillance and someone released that to the public.

No no, it was a god damn Merchant base. No way in hell would they have that good security. Even if it had parts for Squealer. Maybe a Thinker caught on? I wore gloves so it couldn't have been fingerprints, and I took all my weapons with me.

I noticed that my breathing was getting erratic, so I quickly made my way into the man's bathroom. I lock myself in the furthest stall and pull out my phone. I check newspapers and any recent message boards concerning Brockton Bay. My stomach drops when I see something about a crime scene near the train yard. 7 Dead Merchants.

Just as I'm about to read more, I hear the sound of the door opening and some footsteps coming through. I immediately activated my wraith vision and was relieved to see that some students entered and were moving towards the Urinals.

"You think Drew actually banged the Jew girl?" one of them grunted out as he unzipped his pants.

"She isn't Jewish, you idiot. Empire will never let you in if you mix things like that up and target the wrong people… And if he did it, I honestly have no idea. I never know what that guy is thinking. He's got a lot of sluts after him, so I would be surprised if he settled for someone like Hebert"

When I heard those words, my earlier train of thought came to a rapid stop… What the hell was going on?

"Eh, not as if I really care about the whole situation. Rather her than that track star bitch if you ask me." The second voice stated, and the two of them started to chuckle. I remain silent for a few more moments until I hear them leaving the bathroom…

Without washing their hands…Fucking Nazis.

I return my attention to my phone and skim through the article. Looks like someone found the remains of my murder spree, but no actual suspect was mentioned. The newspaper actually mentioned the possibility of this being Hookwolf based on the injuries, but apparently he was spotted that night on the other side of town.

Either way, my name was nowhere to be seen.

Which leads me to believe the current attention I was getting was somehow related to Taylor. I put my phone away again and leave the stall before washing my hands. Considering the state of Winslow Bathrooms, I was not taking any risks.

I exit into one of the school's many hallways and glance at the nearest group that was staring at me. They were a bunch of first year girls and kinda shrunk back when they noticed I was directly approaching them.

Without leaving them much room to breathe, I question, "What the hell are people saying about me and Hebert." I mention with a somewhat deeper tone. The girls were shorter than me, so that also helped for the sake of intimidation.

"We…Well Barnes said that-"

"Speak clearly," I practically growl out after hearing that name. I have zero tolerance for High school drama, especially now when it's the absolute least of my concerns.

Her friend pulls out her own phone and turns it around for me to look at. My eyes glance at the image display. It was a picture taken at Fugly Bobs… Showing me and Taylor sitting in a booth.

So this is what has got everyone riled up. The god-damn rumour mill. How lovely.

I made my way up another flight of stairs in order to get to my first class. I passed a few more hallways but stopped when I came by one of them. Why?

A decent amount of people were gathered around some people of interest. Sophia Hess, Emma Barnes and Maddison….something. They were surrounding Taylor who had her back to the wall…

Well, then, time to sneak away and let the situation blow over- And Taylor took that moment to look towards the side and make eye contact with me.

Fuck, now i have to do something.

With a grunt, I turn towards the large group and let out a cough to make the onlookers part so I can move through. "Wanna tell me what bullcrap you have been spreading around school?" I yell out at the group, now grabbing their attention away from the bullied girl.

Emma's face had one of her standard ugly expressions. A face of surprise that quickly devolved into a sinister grin. "Henry! So glad you could join us. We were just talking about Hebert's pathetic attempts yesterday."

I merely raised an eyebrow in confusion.

"Come now Henry, Everyone knows you aren't that well off and work Part-Time. It's obvious that she paid you to go out with her yesterday. My if I had known you'd be willing to do that, I would've gone out with you ages ago" she says with an arrogant chuckle.

My face couldn't help but scrunch up in disgust," Your imagination and your looks are really the only things you have going for you...At least, I'm not the person here who actually undresses for money."

She certainly didn't like that response. A chunk of her arrogant facade cracked with my backhanded insult. Whatever her reaction was, she quickly followed up with an annoyed tone,"Then WHY were YOU with her yesterday. What possible reason could you have had to be with a WEAKLING like her!"

Where the hell does she get off talking like that. Seriously, High school Drama is such dogshit. I actually need to create an alibi now. I give Taylor a quick glance and consider the things I know about her.

"She's been tutoring me." I quickly state, drawing a surprised expression from both the angry redhead as well as the raven haired girl in question.

"She…What? You are literally in a higher year than her and her grades are miserable! She's an idiot who's just trying to fool you Henr-"

"Cut the Crap Barnes." I interrupt her. "Hebert was acing her classes until you three came along and sabotaged every single assignment and piece of homework she had. She's got more between the ears than the three of you combined."

This got the other's girls angry as well and Sophia moved a step closer," Keep talking shit and I will knock you out Drew!"

"And you come another stop closer and I will make you eat those words." I bark right back, halting her advance. I look back at the other two girls who were simply staring with wide eyes at this point. Taylor wasn't that much better, but her staring was accompanied by the slightest hint of a smile.

Yeah, I might as well go all in.

I take a short breath and state, "Tell you what. I think this has gone on for long enough."

"Excuse me?" Sophia asks with a glare.

I turn to her again as I notice her fists ball up. She isn't armed and she wouldn't expose her power in front of so many onlookers. I have the upper hand. "Bullying Hebert I mean. Time for you to stop this crap."

Madison was the one to complain this time, though she was more like an undersized dog on my threat evaluation. She's literally just the extra member that doesn't contribute anything. "This has nothing to do with you Henr-"

"Well, it does now! And honestly, the fact you three bitches are still in school honestly baffles me. You left a girl, To die, in a locker of toxic filth that you prepared. The fact that she DIDN'T die is honestly a miracle. And then what, the cops show up one day and that's it? You either Bribed or blew them Emma and I honestly don't care." I take a small pause as I grab my backpack and place it on the ground next to me, my jacket following soon after.

"You cut the crap or you go through me. Plain and simple." I state out with some conviction.

Yeah, this should get me Taylor's loyalty, if not then I'm honestly not putting in this much effort any more. To me, this is really just killing two birds with one stone. Taylor will trust me more and I get suspended for a few weeks at minimum. Leaving me plenty of time to Tinker as I want.

"You think you're some hot shit, Drew! You think just cause you worked out a bit that you can fight" Hess growled out as she finally went for an attack.

Good, it will look better if I don't initiate.

My reflexes were focused and I was already in a good stance. Hers wasn't that bad either. I'm guessing Wards get some formal training in that regard. But compared to a guy who punched out mass-produced case 53 soldiers or another guy who may or may not have punched out an actual dragon, I think I have the better skill set.

As she rushes forwards, I manage to lean to the side and swing my body with a good bit of speed. My leg spins around in a kick which she manages to block with her arms, only to be blind sided by my hand which grabbed hold of her face. The leg she blocked goes for a leg and my hand rips her face downwards, slamming her skull into the ground.

The impact alone would have dazed her, but for good measure, I deliver a quick kick to the ribs to make sure she stayed down for now. And now, time to finalize the scene. I didn't really turn towards Barnes more than I jumped towards her. Before she could really scream, my fist crashed into her face. The impact almost knocked her off her fate if it wasn't for me quickly grabbing the side of her head and headbutting her in the mouth.

Muffled screaming is all there's to be heard as she collapses to the ground while holding her now bleeding mouth. That was decent.

As I finally turn to my last target, I see that Madison was already at the end of the hallway and practically jumping down the stairs. "You were talking such good shit earlier and now you're gonna wimp out?! And you think you rule this school!?" I yell out after her, but don't give any chance.

I turn towards Taylor, who was staring with such a slack jawed expression, I couldn't help but let out a chuckle in response, "In my experience, Catching flies like that tends to be rather annoying."

Her mouth shuts itself immediately and she continues to stare at the convulsing bodies of her two bullies. She eventually manages to say, "You… You'll be in trouble."

Oh right…about that.

I turn to all the students watching and am pleased to see that no one took their phone out to record. To be fair, it was a relatively short fight so by the time someone got their phone out, it could already have been too late.

"Any of you even think of ratting me out to Blackwell, then your teeth go next. You got that?!" I put some extra force into my shout. The students were clearly shocked by the revelation that the supposed pretty boy of Winslow is willing to throw hands.

Some of the students give fearful nods and leave while others stay to gawk at the groaning forms of the downed girls. As if on cue, Mrs. Knott rounded the corner. The Sight was probably not a good one for the older teacher.

A student with some blood on his hands, two girls writhing on the ground, one clutching her bleeding mouth…Oh yeah, that's gonna be one juicy suspension.

The teacher stared with shock at the scene and began looking between myself and Taylor. Rather than her coming to conclusions, I decided to take matters in my own hands…So to say.

"Mrs Knott, These two were bullying hebert. After I told them to stop numerous times, they decided to get physical. I just happened to win that fight."

"I'll kill you, you piece of shit!" Sophia grunted out in reaction and I did my best to stop a smirk forming on my face.

Mrs. Knott was clearly aware that this was more complicated than it looked but she did the thing that was expected," Violence is not the answer Mr Drew! You should have gone to a teacher so they could've handled this."

This time, I couldn't help but scoff in return, "As if going to teacher's concerning these two has ever worked out…"

"I… Head to the Principal's office right now, young man." She quickly turned to someone else among the crowd," And please can someone call the school nurse?" Her tone was growing more hysteric with the seconds.

Me on the other hand? I was completely calm. I killed 7 people yesterday and I didn't bat a fucking eye. This won't rattle me. No, I was giving a light smile as I turned around and gave Taylor a curt nod before grabbing my bag and jacket. I begin walking and make my way to the Principal's office.

The students in my way immediately part as I approach them. They all looked at me with unsure expressions and fearful stares. I also got some grins and smiles from Empire Goons which kinda killed my mood a bit. I wonder…If I also beat up some Nazis, will my punishment be increased or decreased?

Food for thought.

Winslow high

Henry Drew

8 hours later

I really got the jackpot today. 3 weeks suspension for now and a possible Lawsuit later. At least judging by one, Alan Barnes was yelling at me. Man really is biting off more than he could chew…Though, it's not like he can know that I won't just let them control the narrative or all the other bullshit they did with Hebert.

Realistically, I don't care if I get expelled, but a lawsuit? That's a bit too much attention to myself. I'm not in the mood for that. So I'm going to use the same means that got them out of trouble all this time.

…Too bad that that tends to take a while. I've been in this hiding spot for nearly 2 hours now. After getting through a yelling session by Principal Blackwell, I decided to head back to my lair and began work on a simple furnace. Using materials from the parts I stole from Squealer were a definite benefit and getting a few other things from Home Depot and a gardening centre helped with the rest. Honestly, the lair is a great location, the only real issue just happens to be the Air supply.

Keeping the maintenance shaft open the entire time will be a bit of an issue to hide the place while I'm working, so some kind of plan will have to be made there…

Though, considering my abilities, I think the Lair might be abandoned in the future or actually get some professional work done. I still need a few more resources and connections before that though.

Anyway, my neck hurts. I've been lying prone for the last two hours. Why?

Because I'm in the back of Principal Blackwell's car, waiting for her to come back. Again someone may ask, why?

Because I don't want to go to Jail is why. Putting two and two together isn't hard when knowing that Sophia is a ward. The school gets a fat paycheck for her being a student here and that is why they defended her to such an absurd degree. Blackwell made it quite clear that I was in massive trouble already and the suspension is just the primary punishment while they take their time to get all the information.

I was not waiting on that, so I decided to be a bit more proactive. Blackwell was finally finishing up in her office and was heading down the stairs. I kept using my wraith vision to observe for any possible onlookers, but if I keep my head down, literally, I should be fine.

Soon enough, I can see her walking on the parking lot and making her way towards her car. It doesn't seem like she's noticing anything off and simply opens the boot to fling her bag inside it. She then moves towards the driver's seat and gets in, promptly closing the door. Just as she fastens her seatbelt, she freezes up. Oh, she saw me in the rearview mirror.

Before she can scream, my left hand coils around her mouth and pulls her head towards the seat. My other hand glows green and is firmly slammed on top of her head.

The sensation of dominating a mind is something I need to get used to. But it was certainly rewarding. She was marked with a green light in my wraith vision and now, I can sense why. She has information…on Shadow Stalker.

I think I can claw the information from her mind, but that would end up killing her. I need her alive, so I decide to ask her instead. "What are… What are weaknesses or little known facts about Sophia Hess, and yes, I know she is Shadowstalker." I remove my hand from her mouth, allowing her to breathe once more.

"She…She…" Blackwell groans out as her pupils dilate, "She's weak to electrical currents. She can't move through them…. I don't know anything more."

I give a nod as I remove my hands from her head. Her eyes were still glowing for a moment before fading back to normality. I lean forward and begin whispering in her ear.

"Any court case or anything of the sort going after me, you will do everything in your power to sabotage them. Deny claims that I started a fight or even participated. Threaten any witnesses who try to go against me. Understood?" I finish.

I could hear her gulp and saw the beads of sweat dripping down her face," Y-Yes Mr Drew… I'll do everything I can."

Ok…this is decent for now. I still have no idea how good the Master effect is, but it should hold up. If need be, I can technically kill her remotely. Either way, Blackwell is a good piece on the board to have right now. After the suspension, I can use this to test out or just give myself good grades to get out of school on a more permanent basis.

"Start driving home, Drop me off in about 5 blocks from here."

She looks at the rearview mirror and gives me a nod. Her head and face looked completely normal now. But when activating my wraith vision, I saw more.

The mark of my head was branded on her spirit, colouring the entire thing blue.

Yeah, this has a lot of potential, doesn't it?

On the other side of the city, two Capes were currently standing outside a certain convenience store. The shop was about to close for the evening and two girls were unsure if they wanted to enter or not. They weren't dressed in their usual outfits, both having decided to wear Hoodies and pants. Not the best disguise, but they wanted to keep this outing on the down low.

Victoria is the first to finally enter the store and Amy is quick to follow in step. Her nervousness clear in every step. Glory Girl moves ahead to the cashier and after looking around to make sure there weren't too many onlookers. Actually, the store was essentially empty.

"Excuse me, we are closing right no-" The young cashier told the pair but cut himself off when Vicky removed her hood and gave him a kind smile. Amy noticed her sister's aura go off, but decided against saying anything this time. After all, they want to get some info discreetly.

"Sorry sir. We just need a moment of your time"

"Ah yeah, sure Glory Girl… Or Miss Dallon. I'm not-" The young part-timer was tripping over his words.

Amy was thankful that her sister had some skill in encounters like this. Especially because they didn't have a warrant, didn't have any permission from the PRT and didn't even tell their parents about this entire thing.

"Glory Girl is fine. We are doing a little investigation on a missing person's case." Vicky answers him.

He scratches the back of his neck, clearly unsure on what he's supposed to do, "Oh… I wasn't aware you handled things like that, how can I help?"

Vicky clasps her hands together, "Well, we aren't sure. A week ago, a robbery occurred in this store. Do you by chance have a camera or something recorded around here?"

He leans back for a second and points toward a circular camera on the ceiling behind him.

"Yeah, one sec, I can show you the recordings. My buddy Jimmy was covering the shift at the time…" He looks towards Panacea, "He really appreciates you saving his life"

"Ah…he's welcome then" Amy answers with a quick nod, a bit unsure on how to react. She never really stuck around to get thanked for healing someone so…she wasn't sure what to think.

Victoria breaks the silence and points behind the cashier, "Mind helping us out?"

"Oh yeah, sure." He beckons them to follow him to the backroom. They see an old TV hooked up to a recorder and he starts turning some knobs and presses some buttons.

"I didn't really look at the whole recording myself, but it was last Friday right? "They give him a nod in return, "Ok one second then."

He keeps adjusting the recording until the correct timeframe's showed up.

Victoria steps closer and states, "The investigation is being kept a bit secret, and we need to see who else was here at the time…would you mind stepping out for just a moment as we take a look at this?"

Amy could kiss her sister for thinking ahead like this…well, she could kiss her for other reasons too, but that was beside the point.

After the part-timer left the room, Victoria started using the recorder to rewind back to the start of the shooting. It was an older camera with rather bad quality, showing only black and white recording.

But it showed them who they wanted to see. The scene of the robbery replayed in front of them in viscous detail. And Amy's heart sunk to her stomach when she realized that the person who got a round of buckshot into their chest was probably the brother she came to find.

She turned away for a moment and started holding her head as tears threatened to pour out of her eyes. What the hell was she thinking. That blood wasn't from some normal injury, it was basically at his heart… There's no way he would have-

"Amy?" Her sister's hand found itself on her shoulder. She tried to suppress a silent sob as tears were still forming. Vicky slowly turns her around and directs her eyes to the screen. She isn't sure why Vicky would do this until the recording resumes.

It showed the boy holding his bleeding chest before… Suddenly just dissolving into ash? It's like one of those magic tricks using flash paper. A quick effect and no trace remained. A splotch of blood remained where he sat, but the rest was gone.

He… He's a Cape… He must be…

Victoria starts fiddling with the controls a bit before seemingly deleting the segment where his body vanished. Before Amy could ask her as to why, her sister had already rewound the message again before loudly stating, "Excuse me?! Mind if we asked another question?"

Victoria herself wasn't sure if this would work, but people tended to frequent the same grocery stores when taking care of shopping. So there's a fragment of a chance that the employee might recognize him. Even if not, they have his face now. They know what he looks like that and is already worth so much.

The employee joined them in the room once more and Vicky pointed towards the screen, "Sorry, any chance you might recognize the guy?"

The part-timer moved his face closer to the screen, trying to figure out who was standing there. A few moments later, he turns back to the two girls and says, "I admit, I'm not too sure, But I think it's one of the waiter's from Somer's Rock. They tend to come here for whenever they need supplies on the short term and I think I recognize the guy." He pauses for a moment before stating, "Right, Somer's Rock is a bar over on-"

"We know where it is," Amy suddenly cuts him off before practically running out the room and heading towards the store exit. Victoria quickly thanked the part-timer before rushing outside to intercept Amy.

She finds the girl almost sprinting along the street. Vicky catches up thanks to her flight and grabs hold of her hand. "Amy, stop." She whispers as she wraps her arms around her sister. "Please, just look at me…"

"I… I need to meet him." Amy chokes out.

Vicky turns her around, "It's fine, we will…. Just…stop worrying?.. It's going to be fine. We have our leads on him. We know what he looks like, ok?" she pauses for a moment to rub the back of Amy's head. Vicky would ensure it would be ok. Amy had been so distraught the last week, ever since she found out. They haven't told their parents yet on account of…. The Family knew that Amy knew she was adopted, but they never really addressed it and…

This was not a good time. Vicky needs to make sure this works out…and that means ensure that this brother doesn't turn out to be a massive piece of shit.

"It's gonna be fine"
