This is probably (hopefully) going to be the last thing I write before my exams start, I always get the good ideas I'm supposed to be studying,

This is mainly going to follow Pokemon Emerald as its one of the few games I can play and complete (the other game being FireRed/LeafGreen), I was having think of having them travel Kanto and eventually catch each of the legendary birds, but Emerald holds a special place in my heart and that is why I will be using it as my basis.

The boys will not travel together, as they have different dreams and goals, they will split up after the first gym

Logan shifted anxiously in front of the pokemon lab, today was the day, the day he and his best friends became pokemon trainers, in Hoenn Region, kids became trainers when they turned 13 and just a few weeks ago, Logan's youngest friend Kendall turned 13, just in time for the new shipment of starter pokemon, which meant that Logan and Kendall along with their other best friends; James and Carlos could go on a journey together. Although Professor Wainwright had told them to be at the lab at 10, Logan had gotten there 30 minutes early in fear of being late. Hearing a shout behind him, he glanced and grinned when he saw Carlos running towards him with James hot on his heels

"Hey, guys! about time" Logan greeted them as they stopped in front of him

"Logan, we're meant to be here at 10, and it's only 9:50. Relax" James rolled his eyes

"yeah, besides we beat Kendall here," Carlos said happily

"yeah, speaking of which, where is Kendall?"

"I'm here!" they turned to see their youngest friend and brother running up to them, backpack thumping against his back as he ran

"you know we're going back to our homes to say goodbye to our family, you didn't need to bring your bag," Logan told his friend as he joined them

"I had to bring it, or else Katie was going to climb in so she could join me," Kendall said with a roll of his eyes "I wouldn't have enough time to repack"

"good idea" James nodded and the other boys nodded as well, all too familiar with Kendall's 7-year-old sister who was very eager to go on a journey. It wouldn't surprise them if she did climb into Kendall's backpack just so that she could go on a journey.

"Hello boys, you guys are early" the boys turned to see Professor Wainwright walking toward them

"hi professor, we're here to start our journey," Logan said

"Excellent, follow me" the boys followed the professor into the lab, they walked down a hallway before arriving at a large room where three pokemon were sitting at a table in the middle of the room. One was a small, chick-like Pokémon with stubby, downy, yellow wings. Its body was covered with orange feathers, there was an orange and yellow crest on its head that resembled a flame. The other one was a light-blue, penguin-like Pokémon. It had a dark blue head with a primarily white face and a short, yellow beak. The dark blue feathers on its head extended down its back and around its neck, which caused it to appear to be wearing a cape. The final Pokemon was a small, pale-green, quadrupedal Pokémon with dark-green buds around its neck. It had four short legs with a single nailed toe on each and a stubby tail, on top of its head is a large, green leaf that was longer than its body that was letting out a soothing aroma. "These are the starter pokemon; Torchic the fire type, Piplup the water type and finally Chikorita the grass type." As she spoke, the pokemon on the table let out a cry when it heard its name

"uhh, Professor Wainwright, there are 4 of us and only three pokemon," Logan said

"yes, well one of you will miss out on a traditional starter and pick a different one. So boys, which one will it be?"

"I'll do it," Kendall said without hesitation he didn't mind, after all, he was fine with any he knew James had plans on how to use Piplup in contests, Carlos loved fire Pokemon and as Logan aimed to be a Pokemon doctor one day, Logan aimed to get a grass type as his starter

"Are you sure Ken?" James asked and Kendall shook his head

"go ahead guys. It's fine" the boys nodded and turned to the professor

"alright boys. Decide amongst yourselves who goes first" Professor Wainwright said

"no need. We know which pokemon we want" the boys said at the same time and each walked up to the pokemon they each wanted

"hey buddy, want to be my partner and help me become the champion?" Carlos asked Torchic who let out a cry of excitement and nuzzled his hand, Carlos smiled "great!"

Meanwhile, James stroked Piplup's head as he spoke to it "you know, you're very handsome" Piplup puffed its chest pride "what do you say about helping me becoming a coordinator? You'll spend a lot of time in the spotlight" Piplup chirped happily and jumped up and down "I'll take that as a yes!"

On the other side of James, Logan was feeding Chikorita a few berries "hi there. I know I may not look much, but I assure you I am more than capable. My dream is to become a pokemon doctor one day, but first I want to go out and explore the world, will you be my partner?" Chikorita looked at him, before jumping into his arms and nuzzling him happily

"alright boys, I'll give your Poke-Dexes now" Professor Wainwright handed them each a device in different colours; Kendall's one was silver, James' one was blue, Logan's one was green and Carlos' one was red. "so, Kendall, are you ready to receive your pokemon now?"

"yes please!" Kendall nodded

"all right then, give me a moment," Professor Wainwright said and disappeared behind a door

"dudes, I can't believe we're pokemon trainers now!" Carlos said excitedly

"I know!" James added

"I wonder how you turn this thing on? Woah!" Logan exclaimed as his Poke-Dex screen suddenly lit up "cool, it has my details already!"

"Really?" Carlos asked and turned on his Poke-Dex and his information popped up "nice"

"I want to know what it says about my pokemon," James said and pointed his Poke-Dex at his Piplup and almost immediately, Piplup's picture appeared and a male mechanical voice could be heard

'Piplup, the penguin pokemon. Because it is very proud, it hates accepting food from people. Its thick down guards it from cold. This Piplup is male and has the ability torrent, which powers up water type moves when its health is low. Piplup knows the moves pound, growl and water gun, it has two egg moves which are icy wind and yawn'

"sounds like you're a tough guy" James nodded and Piplup puffed its chest proudly "say…how about a nickname? Make you stand out from the crowd?" Piplup nodded, eyes shining "alright then, I've made a list, I'll read them out and you stop me when you hear a name you like, ok?" Piplup nodded as James took out a notebook from his bag, meanwhile, Logan and Carlos each scanned their pokemon

'Torchic the chick pokemon. A fire burns inside it, so it feels very warm to touch, it launches fireballs of 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. This Torchic is male and has the ability blaze, which powers up fire-type moves when its health is low. Torchic knows the moves scratch, growl and ember, it has one egg move which is night slash'

'Chikorita the leaf pokemon. It uses the leaf on its head to determine the area's temperature and humidity it loves to sunbathe. This Chikorita is female and has the ability overgrow, which boosts grass-type attacks when its health is low. Chikorita knows the moves tackle, growl and razor leaf, it has two egg moves which are ancient power and heal pulse'

Both boys nodded, impressed at their pokemon and asked if they wanted nicknames, to which both pokemon nodded

"Alright!" James' voice caught their attention "guys, meet my partner; Neptune!" James presented his pokemon proudly

"lup!" Piplup said, lifting his head proudly

"not bad, but I'm gonna name Torchic something even better!" Carlos boasted and Kendall rolled his eyes

"Tor!" Torchic said

"Not if I do it first" Logan challenged and both boys glared at each other before laughing

"Alright then, whoever gives their pokemon the less awesomer nickname has to cook dinner tonight" Carlos challenged

"deal" Logan nodded "but for future reference, awesomer is not a real word"

"leave me out of this. Ok?" Kendall requested, knowing how out of hand his friends (him included) could get when they did a competition between them. Both boys nodded before moving to the side to name their pokemon just as the professor returned

"alright Kendall, here are your choices" professor wainwright opened three poke-balls which revealed three pokemon, one was a small, humanoid Pokémon with a small tuft of hair sticks up from the top of its head, and two white, bow-shaped feelers on each side of its purple head and a third bow-shaped feeler on its neck. The other one was a quadrupedal Pokémon with four stubby legs and a large round head. Its body was black with plates of grey armour covering its head, back, and legs. And the final pokemon was a small, blue, jackal-like Pokémon. It had a black torso and legs, a blue tail, and a yellow collar. It has rounded bumps on the backs of its forepaws, it has a black "mask" and red eyes and it stood on its toes instead of its entire foot "you can choose between Gothita a psychic type, Aron a steel type or Riolu a fighting type"

Kendall glanced at the three pokemon closely, while all of them were amazing, was obvious that Gothita was comfortable at the lab as it wasn't even paying attention to him, Aron seemed to be taking a nap and Riolu was looking at him with bright and curious eyes. Before Kendall could do anything, Riolu quickly ran forwards and stopped in front of him, staring at him with determined bright eyes

"I guess you want me as your trainer, huh? he said to Riolu who nodded

"that settles that I guess," Professor Wainwright said, returning Gothita and Aron to their balls and placing them in her labcoat

"is it alright if I scan you?" Kendall asked his new partner

"lu!" Riolu barked and Kendall scanned it with his Poke-Dex

'Riolu the emanation pokemon. The aura it emanates from its body intensifies to alert others if it is afraid or sad. This Riolu is male and has the ability Inner focus, which prevents the Pokemon from flinching. Riolu knows the moves quick attack, endure and metal claw, it has one egg move which is blaze kick'

"heh, you're a strong one eh?" Kendall said to Riolu who grinned proudly, before climbing onto Kendall's back and gripping his shoulder with his paws "you want to ride on my shoulder?" Riolu nodded and Kendall grinned "well, you're much lighter than my sister. Do you want a nickname?" Riolu barked and nodded his head

"ok, we've decided that Chikorita's nickname shall be…Flora!" Logan called from where he was sitting on the couch

"Chika!" the newly named Flora cheered as she lept into Logan's lap

"ha! You call that a nickname? I've decided to call my Torchic Inferno" Carlos said smugly

"chick!" Inferno said

"not bad, but maybe don't refer to the pokemon as yours, guys remember, they are living breathing creatures who have emotions just like the rest of us. And it's only fair if we treat them that way" Kendall said and Riolu nodded

"Kendall's right. We should treat them with respect" James nodded, patting Neptune

"lup!" Neptune said happily

"Riolu huh?" Logan said, noticing the Pokemon on Kendall's shoulder "good choice"

"more like he choose me" Kendall shrugged

"ok, but who wins the competition?" Carlos asked

"I like Inferno the best," James said, Logan groaned

"I kinda liked Flora the best," Kendall said and Logan grinned

"so, how do we settle the tie?" Logan asked

"how about a battle?" James suggested, Carlos and Logan shared a look

"it's on" they said at the same time, before dashing out to the training field at the back of the lab with their pokemon following behind. James and Kendall rolled their eyes fondly and followed their friends at a much calmer pace

"mind being the referee? I want to find a good nickname for Riolu" Kendall asked James who nodded

"Sure, as long as you promise to battle me after these two finish. Loser has to wash up"

"deal!"

The two exited the lab and found Carlos and Loan already at the field waiting for them, their Pokemon by their sides

"about time!" Carlos grinned "now I can beat Logan"

"Not if I beat you first" Logan snarked back, James rolled his eyes and this place, while Kendall went off to the side to choose a nickname for Riolu. Eventually, Riolu decided on the Nickname Odin, after the Norse God king and Kendall turned his attention to the battle, just in time to see Logan beat Carlos.

"aw, man!" Carlos whined, before smiling and shaking Logan's hand "nice battle"

yeah it was a close one" Logan agreed before they both picked up their pokemon and left the field so James and Kendall could battle

"Neptune, take the stage!"

"Odin, battle ready!"

"so you decided to name Riolu after the king of the Norse gods?" James asked

"yep, he had trouble deciding between Odin and Ares" Kendall nodded

"If you two are done chitchatting, can we begin? We're losing daylight!" Logan complained

"sorry Logie, we're ready," James said and Kendall nodded

"alright, battle begin!"

Each of the boys will obtain one Eeveelution, one shiny and one dragon type each, feel free to leave suggestions about what pokemon each boy should get. Feel free to also suggest team members for the boys, Pokemon from other regions are welcome

Kendall vs James will be the next chapter as well as the boys leaving for their journey and catching their next pokemon, suggestions welcome
