Chapter Thirty-Five

It has been a few days since the Coven Day Parade. As Danielle was recovering, she ends up reading a lot, figuring out how to make a better door with the materials they got. Hooty on the other hand, was preparing a little party for Lilith. Walking into the living room to give her eyes some rest after reading so much, Danielle sees the party has just begun. Collector floats behind placing a party hat on Danielle.

"There we go," said Collector, before landing on the floor.

"Thanks Collector," said Danielle, slightly ruffling Collector's hair.

"It is so nice to be surrounded by all of Lulu's dearest friends!" said Hooty, looking at everyone in the room.

"Yeah!" said Steve, raising his arms in excitement. "All hail Lulu!"

"We're here to celebrate the new assistant curator of the Supernatural Museum of History," said Hooty, lifting his wine glass. "Here's to you, Lulu!"

"I wonder if dad would get along with Lilith," thought Danielle, hearing everyone cheer. "They both love history."

"Here, Danielle," said Collector, handing a wine glass over. "I… uh… the eyes are staring at me creepily."

"I can see," said Danielle, looking at the wine glass contents with disgust before looking at Hooty. "Interesting concoction."

"Yup," said Hooty, before holding a tray forward. "Now for some "app-pellet-tizers". You want a- There's an extra one. I'm working on it."

"No thanks. I'm good," said Danielle, backing away slightly with Collector. "Is Lilith around? I… uh… want to congratulate her."

"Someone's enjoying the appetizers," said Collector, seeing something grab one of the appetizers from outside the house. "Yuck."

"Oh, I wish I could stay longer, but I must be off on my next adventure," said an Unknown Lady at the party, inspecting the appetizer before throwing it away. "It's such a delight to see my little bookworm back in the historical world after all these years"

"Uh, thank you, Flora, but it's just a small job. Only an assistant," said Lilith, taking off her party hat. "I'm surprised you even heard about this."

"The Emperor wanted to make sure you weren't getting into any trouble. And to clear out your office," said Flora, looking at Lilith. "I left a box of your knick-knacks inside. Wish you took more from my tutelage, dear. History's supposed to be exciting, after all!"

"Dare I ask?" said Danielle, walking over to Lilith as Flora left.

"Flora D'splora," said Lilith, staring in the direction Flora went. "Bad-girl historian, celebrity, and my former mentor in the Emperor's Coven."

"Ooooo, this realm's Dora the Explorer," said Danielle, groaning slightly. "Very questionable."

"And I have questions about MY LIFE!" said Lilith, before pacing around. "All I ever got to do was desk work, while she goofed off riding wild snake horses and… and eating mummy jerky! Well I can just be as exciting as Flora. I'll come up with an exhibit that 'll knock the Titan's socks off!"

"Titans don't wear socks," said Collector, seeing Lilith go back in the house.

"Uh, congrats," said Danielle, as she and Collector stood outside.

After the party was over and cleaning up afterwards, Danielle lays on the couch as małe echo projected more information regarding Philip. Collector was watching too, wondering if Philip mentioned him.

"After careful analysis during this Deadwardian Era, I believe the current human year is 1660. Or is it '70? The years are flashing by, but it will all be worth it," said the Diary Entry, as it changed from one scene to the next. "I've gathered all the portal ingredients, including Titan's Blood. All that's left is to seek out the Collector, and he will tell me what I need to complete my mission. But first, my companions and I must face…"

"Dangit," said Danielle, as the projection stopped. "It cut off."

"Yes! He did mention me," said Collector, floating in the air in excitement.

"Caleb must have taken you away at the last second," said Danielle, sitting up. "Jerk. He must have offed Philip. Philip probably knows how to make a proper door."

"Actually…" said Collector, looking at Danielle.

"Danielle, I've got leg hair older than you," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "This Philip guy worked on his door for years. Try not to beat yourself up too much."

"You're right. Also, ew on the leg hair," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "I should read that book again that has the time pools in it."

"Oh, this book, time magic isn't really a thing," said Eda, grabbing a book. "Back in the day, I was a bit of an urban-legend junkie. Twig Foot, Lenderman, possums..."

"Possums are real," said Danielle, looking at Eda.

"Yeah sure, kid," said Eda, snorting. "Mythical puddles that act as windows into the past, but they're never in the same spot twice. Me and Lily used to search for them. She'd say I forced her into it, but I think she had more fun than me."

"Bet she did," said Danielle, before heading towards the kitchen. "I'm going to talk to her."

"I think…" thought Eda, looking at Danielle. "I may have to take action in case Danielle does what Luz did. That is, if Luz really did time travel but what for?"

"Hi Lilith," said Danielle, walking over to Lilith. "Nice little exhibit going on here."

"I'm plotting out my first exhibit for the museum. It's almost as if the Emperor wanted Flora to tick me off. Well, I'll show her that she's not the only bad-girl historian in town," said Lilith, eyeing her exhibit. "I'm thinking... "The Architecture History behind Deadwardian Balusters". This won't work, will it?"

"Oh, come on, this is actually interesting to me. Don't let Flora get to ya," said Danielle, sitting next to Lilith. "I was wondering if you knew anything about this."

"Oh, I remember these! "In the Premysteric Era, it's theorized that coagulated Titan Blood mixed with the magical algae of the Boiling Sea created temporary holes in time"," said Lilith, looking at the entry in the book. "I... did cobble together a device to find these with Eda. It should be in the box Flora returned to me. But it was faulty. It needed more power than I could ever give it."

"Would Titan's Blood work?" asked Danielle, looking at Lilith.

"Yes, it would," replied Lilith, before seeing Danielle head into another room before returning with a little vial of Titan's Blood from the syringe from that day. "Let's do it!"

Over the course of a few days, Lilith and Danielle try to pinpoint any time pools that are nearby. Eda on the other hand, asked Collector to magic Danielle's necklace to her whenever Danielle wasn't aware. Eda's idea was to go around to as many people during those days, that she know were trustworthy and Collector putting their memories into the necklace, should Danielle prevent herself from ever coming to the isles through the use of time pools, should they be discovered.

"Don't worry, Danielle, we're getting closer. I can feel it," said Lilith, swinging a knife into the nearby tree and taking a bark sample. "Ha! Exactly what I thought. These are wrinkling oaks."

"Suspension, I assume," said Danielle, looking at Lilith.

"Exactly," said Lilith, looking at Danielle. "So, accounting for local plague patterns, the quake in the '30s, and the switch from boiling units to the empirical system, the time pool should be... here!"

"The beach?" said Danielle, looking around.

"But... I triple-checked all my calculations. My equipment is first-rate!" said Lilith, before tripping over something and kicking at the sand. "Stupid rock!"

"I didn't see a rock there," said Danielle, looking at Lilith.

"Maybe the Titan Blood was too dry? Is it not algae-blooming season?" asked Lilith, talking to herself.

"Maybe…" thought Danielle, poking the sand and seeing it ripple before putting her head in. "Time pool, sweet. Uh… Eda?"

"Whoo-hoo, great day to play hooky," said Young Eda, falling backwards onto the sand. "Don't you think so Raine?"

"Yeah, my brain needs a little rest," said Young Raine, lying next to Eda.

"R to the A to the E-E-Da!" thought Danielle, before leaving as Young Eda sneezed. "Success."

"Was it my tools? Are they broken?" asked Lilith, taking off her glasses and staring at her reflection. "Am... I... broken?"

"You are not broken, Lilith. You did it, you found the time pools," said Danielle, as she poked the sand and made it ripple in front of Lilith.

"In your face!" said Lilith, talking to her reflection before peering into a time pool. "A Stonesleeper from the Hecktaceous Period. Did you know that they have a ticklish spot behind their ears?"

"I do now. Now which time pool will show me what I need?" said Danielle, peering into another time pool. "Collector…"

"No! What are you doing?" screamed Collector, as Papa Titan tumbles to the Boiling Sea partially dead. "Let me out! Saiph! Dios! Lux! Atria! MOM!"

"Oh my," said Danielle, leaving the time pool. "Collector."

"No wonder no one's found these before," said Lilith, peering through another time pool as her past self tripped over her.

"Okay, let's hope this next one gives me something," said Danielle, peering into another time pool and looking around. "Bonesborough during its early years. Ma'am, excuse me. What era we in?"

"'Tis the Deadwardian Era," replied the Lady, looking at Danielle. "What ye be doing in the sand? Be ye a crab maiden?"

"Uh… teenager stuff and no on the crab maiden part," replied Danielle, before leaving and looking at Lilith. "Found Philip's time."

"Good. Also, look," said Lilith, pointing to the top of her head. "These are the oldest barnacles I've ever had on my head."

"Yeah, those are coming off," said Danielle, setting off a wind glyph producing sharp blades. "Right now, that is."

"Ow-ow-ow," said Lilith, as the barnacles are taken off. "This will be a truly unprecedented exploration. N-Now, before we dive in, we must remember if the tide comes in, we could be trapped, paradoxes will be a danger, and don't get me started on the bloody fly effect, uh... But a bad-girl historian like myself is all about taking risks. So... let's boogie down to History Town."

"Oh my gosh," said Danielle, looking away in embarrassment. "She'll get along great with dad, yeesh."

Jumping into the time pool, Danielle and Lilith grab some laundry from the lady's laundry basket. Noticing her necklace missing, Danielle gets frantic before Lilith calms her saying it's probably still in the Owl House. Donning the articles of clothes as they walk, they come upon the outer wall of Bonesborough. By then, Danielle had her illusion glyph activated, with her skin tone being a light olive, black wavy hair, and grey-blue eyes with a slight Asian appeal.

"Now, Danielle. We are technically in the Savage Ages, way before Belos banished wild magic," said Lilith, tucking her hair in better under her hat and scarf. "These denizens may be dangerous!"

"Maybe some but not all," said Danielle, as they walked into Bonesborough.

"Good tidings, kind witches," said a Demon, tilting his hat in kindness towards Danielle and Lilith before walking away.

"See what I mean," said Danielle, as they continued to walk.

"Oh, my gosh! Look at this thatch work. Each segment looped by hand!" said Lilith, excited as she looks at an old styled roof before writing it down. "But I bet Flora would scoff at it."

"Sir, a moment of your time," said Danielle, approaching a demon and showing the silhouette of Philip on paper to him. "Have you seen this person around? A male human to be precise."

Seeing the demon say no, Danielle asks around and gets the same response. Shouting is heard nearby as Danielle and Lilith check. Turns out they have found Philip but he was being bullied by two tall demons.

"Dance, human. Dance!" said a Red Fanged Demon, tossing a book to the Green Fang Demon.

"Give that back!" said Philip, trying to get his book back. "I can't believe this. After the bonds of fellowship we forged…"

"Bonds? Ha!" said the Red Fanged Demon, pushing Philip to the ground. "You still owe us."

"When I accomplish my mission, I promise you, you'll have your snails," said Philip, looking at the two demons.

"Listen to this," said the Green Fanged Demon, reading from the book. ""With my new and bravest companion, Blue Fang, I set forth. His strength should make fast work of any task.""

"His pretty little words should make pretty good kindling," said the Red Fanged Demon, about to burn the book only for wind to encase it and land in Danielle's hands.

"He's had enough, don 'cha think," said Danielle, looking at the two demons.

"Don't waste your time on the kid," said the Green Fanged Demon, stopping the other before leaving.

"Ask your friend there what happened to our brother, Blue Fang, and his Palisman," said the Red Fanged Demon, walking after his brother.

"Huh…" said Danielle, before trying to help Philip up. "Here, let me help."

"I can get up just fine, thank you," said Philip, swatting Danielle's hand away before snatching his book away. "That doesn't belong to you."

"I was just trying to help is all," said Danielle, with a slight glare. "You're the human Philip Wittebane, aren't you?"

"Here to gawk? I may not have a bile sac, but I do have dignity," said Philip, turning away.

"I've heard of your exploits since I traveled here and I kinda know what it is like being away from home," said Danielle, looking at Philip. "Any way we can talk?"

"No," replied Philip, walking away.

"You're limping, let me help," said Danielle, taking out the healing glyph and healing Philip's leg with a bunch of pink flower petals wrapping around his leg. "There, that better."

"That was a…" said Philip, before thinking as he looked at Danielle. "Fine, we can talk."

As they traveled out of Bonesborough and into a forest, they talked. Though Danielle had to come up with a story so as not to give away who they really were and where they were really from.

"So, Dawn," said Philip, looking at Danielle. "You and Lynette started traveling together after her family disowned her for not following in her family steads as a servant. And now that you two are traveling together, you want to find your place in the world while helping whoever you can."

"That's the jest of it," said Danielle, looking at Philip before thinking. "Something's off. I feel like I've talked to Philip before but that can't be. We just met. And the feeling I get from him just puts me off."

"Now... anyone bring a torch?" asked Philip, as he sees Danielle set off a light glyph. "Astounding! I thought I was the only one who used picto-glyphs."

"They're not completely lost to the times," said Danielle, looking at Philip. "Interesting, that you use them as well."

"How else could I have survived here? Plant growth, ice, fire... Took years to find them," said Philip, looking at Danielle. "Almost as if the world wanted to hide them from me. I even found one in a snowflake. Could I see the one you just used?"

"Sorry, it was really meaningful when I found it," replied Danielle, backing away from Philip. "I believe you'll find it eventually."

"Oh," said Philip, looking at Danielle. "I thought you wanted to help whoever you came across. Guess a human is not one of them."

"It's not like that, I'm not biased against humans," said Danielle, looking at Philip.

"Sounds like you are," said Philip, looking at Danielle before a plant glyph fell and activated. "Oops, looks like a few pages were loose."

"Of all the positions I could be in, it had to be this," said Danielle, holding her skirt in place as some of her glyphs fell on the ground. "Aah."

"There we go," said Lilith, burning the vines away. "Better?"

"Very much," said Danielle, grabbing her glyphs not knowing Philip saw the light glyph and jotted it down.

"Line there, curve there... fascinating. Absolutely fascinating." said Philip, drawing a massive glyph combo. "Your friend is very talented. I'm sure you taught her a lot."

"Oh," said Lilith, chuckling as she was flattered. "Maybe I... had a little something to do with it."

"Now, I know a few tricks as well," said Philip, setting off a light glyph to see better what he was doing.

"Wait, is that…" said Danielle, noticing the light spell. "Did you activate the plant glyph just to steal my hard work?"

"It was needed for a shortcut…" replied Philip, tapping the glyph. "To the Collector."

"What?! Aah!" screamed Danielle, as she and Lilith were teleported alongside Philip. "You jerk! What did you do? Where are we?"

"The head of the Titan!" said Lilith, staring out of a hole. "But this is sacred ground!"

"What?!" said Danielle, before looking at Philip. "Philip, explain yourself!"

"I suppose that's why no one wanted to accompany me," said Philip, walking towards the doors. "But every legend told me that the Collector lies there. Behind that door. I just can't figure out the mechanisms to open it. If I weren't so frail..."

"You just used me and stole my hard work," said Danielle, angry as she walked away. "Come on, Lynette. We're leaving. Lynette?"

"This mechanism is unlike any I've seen before," said Lilith, looking at the mechanism on the doors. "It'll make a remarkable addition to my exhibit. It's just..."

"Lilith, we're leaving," said Danielle, whispering to Lilith. "I am not going to be used by him. I'll find another way to make a portal door without his help."

"I agree," said Lilith, as she looked at the door while fiddling with the mechanism. "Look. Most of this puzzle has been solved already. And Philip... The confidence, the compliments. He says everything you want to hear. It feels... uncomfortably familiar."

"Then, let's leave," said Danielle, looking at Lilith as she walked away. "Stop fiddling with the doors."

Danielle walks towards Philip as Lilith continues trying to solve the puzzle. There is a blue fang and a palisman inside Philip's bag. Danielle as she passes by approaches Philip from behind and reads what he is writing in his diary.

""I single-handedly defeated the beast behind the door. Tragically, I could not save my companions."," thought Danielle, as she read the entry before speaking up. "Philip, what did you just do?"

"Ah! I did it! I solved the puzzle!" said Lilith, waving at Danielle.

"I needed a sacrifice," replied Philip, looking at Danielle.

"Lynette!" shouted Danielle, shocked as she looks at Lilith. "Get away from the doors!"

"What?" said Lilith, before she was grabbed and pulled behind the doors. "Aah!"

"Lynette!" shouted Danielle, before some vines constrict around her. "Ah! Let me go!"

"You witches are so easily fooled," said Philip, grabbing Danielle's hair. "Though I never saw one quite like… you're human!"

"Yeah, and…" said Danielle, glaring at Philip.

"Scratch the part that you're a fellow human," said Philip, gripping Danielle's hair harder. "Are you here to steal magic for your people? Planning to invade my country? Answer me!"

"I'm here on my own accord," said Danielle, before being thrown past the doors and into a pillar, her illusion dropping.

"Dawn!" shouted Lilith, hiding behind a pillar as the beast that grabbed her spots Danielle.

"Lynette!" said Danielle, as the beast approaches. "Whoa! Aah!"

"I'm not done with you," said Philip, blinding the beast away as he stomps on Danielle's hand repeatably before binding her with the plant glyph. "To think you would don a disguise and work alongside these witches. I think I'll make an example out of you when we return to the human realm. On what happens when you side with these monsters."

"Let me go, you fiend!" shouted Danielle, as Philip walked up to a platform before unraveling his bandages and turning his splint into a shovel.

"Hey!" shouted Lilith, enraged at Philip. "That better be your own grave you're digging!"

"Found you," said Philip, grabbing a tablet from the ground.

"Collector," thought Danielle, gasping in shock.

"It was nice making a cat's-paw out of you," said Philip, as he drew the same glyph combination from before. "You witches come up with the worst lies. And you're coming with me, little girl."

"Dawn!" shouted Lilith, as Philip teleports away with Danielle. "Oh, Eda is going to kill me."

As Philip left the cave, he had to muffle Danielle with a vine to silence her. As he continued to walk, Philip came upon the cave he was using as a makeshift home. Looking around, Danielle sees palisman that were dead and what looked to be research on what looked to be cloning. Even a cloak that she recognized had put Danielle on edge. Danielle was frantic seeing everything as Philip tossed her to the ground with the vine that was silencing her falling away.

"Potwór! Mostro! Nie ujdzie ci to na sucho!" shouted Danielle, before Philip slapped her across her face. "Aah!"

"I'd use the English language if I was you," said Philip, as he rummages through his bag.

"I got to get loose, I got to get out of here," thought Danielle, cutting her binds against a sharp rock before seeing Philip's arm swelling and seeing glyphs carved into his skin before grabbing a palisman and absorbing its essence and his voice changing. "No no no-no-no. It can't be…"

"It doesn't matter. I just need to live long enough to see this through," said Philip, wiping his hand over the tablet. "And you're going to help me, Collector."

"Nooooooooo!" thought Danielle, as her celestial nature explodes forth and blinding Philip before hearing a voice.

"What the… Mom, is that you?" asked Collector, seeing a light from his side of the tablet, recognizing the celestial nature. "Mom, it's me. It's Aster. Don't leave! Please, I want to go home! Mom!"

"Collector," said Danielle, in a low whisper before sneezing and teleporting herself out into the woods. "No-no-no, what have I done? It's not Caleb… it's not him. How could I not see it?"

Walking through the forest distressed and crying, Danielle sees a path. Walking out onto the path, Danielle continues to walk before hearing the sound of rapid footsteps. Scared, Danielle has a glyph ready before seeing Lilith riding on the beast and jumping off.

"Oh, my goodness, Danielle. Are you okay?" asked Lilith, grabbing Danielle by the shoulders and inspecting her. "How bad did he hurt?"

"I was wrong all this time," said Danielle, crying into Lilith. "I… I…"

"Come on, let's get back to our time," said Lilith, trying to calm down Danielle.

Heading back to the beach, Danielle and Lilith jump into the time pool that would send them back to their era. Shaking some sand away as they're back in their era, Danielle and Lilith head back to the Owl House. Upon being seen, Eda, Collector and King run over, only to gasp when seeing the state Danielle was in.

"Danielle! Lilith!" said Eda, before looking at Lilith. "Lilith, what happened?"

"Don't worry, Danielle. I can heal you," said Collector, about to heal Danielle only for her to flinch away. "Danielle?"

"Well, we found the time pools and met Philip," replied Lilith, looking at Eda. "But it didn't go like we thought."

"I-I'm just go-gonna go to my ro-room," said Danielle, heading inside.

"Danielle…" said Collector, not liking seeing Danielle in such a way.

(Set this night)

It has been a few hours. It had taken a bit before Danielle allowed anyone to touch her. By then, she was tended to, not by magic but old fashioned bandages and ointments. Right now though, Danielle is tearing her room up trying to find her necklace.

"Where is it? Where is it?" said Danielle, moving things around frantically. "Where's my mom's necklace?"

"Looking for this?" asked Eda, holding out the necklace. "Must not have fully clasped on, found it in the hallway."

"Thank you! Thank you!" said Danielle, holding the necklace close as Eda left the room.

"Eda, I don't understand. Why do this?" asked Collector, looking at Eda in the hallway. "Why think that Danielle would possibly prevent herself from coming here by use of the time pools?

"I'm taking a precaution here Collector," replied Eda, looking at Collector. "If Luz did the same thing, then I wouldn't be surprised if Danielle does it to should something happen."

"And the memories you had me placed in her necklace?" said Collector, looking at Eda.

"For us to remember when the memories go back to the recipient," replied Eda, looking at Collector. "We'll have the upper hand, not only against Belos but also to help Danielle with whatever she is going through."
