Chapter 5
The Day Prior, September 27th…
Suddenly in the middle of their discussion his phone buzzed in his pocket, signaling that he was getting a call.
"It's from Gojo" Megumi Voiced. 15 seconds later he hung up. "He wants me to come see him in his office, probably wants to tell me some stupid joke he saw online"
5:38 PM
Zen'in Dining Hall
There were only two people that could convince Megumi to do something he didn't want to do; Tsumiki and his damn teacher. His sister was technically the only one of the two that always argued in their own self interest. On the other hand, said other person just knew which of his buttons he needed to press in order to get the desired reaction.
That was how he ended up here, in this room, in this very Moment. Under no circumstances did he wish to be inside this building or anywhere close, but when Gojo had calmed him into his office pleading, in the most annoying Gojo way possible, for him to do this one tiny favor and join the Zen'in for their little family reunion. Megumi shot the offer down with ease, declining and swiftly turning on his heel to leave Gojo's office. However, his resolve cracked when he heard his teacher say in earnest that he really needed this favor. The serious look Megumi saw in the same man he had known since he was a kid let him know that Gojo was completely genuine. Whatever plan his sensei had for himself in regards to this Zen'in gathering, Megumi thought it was at least proper to hear what he had to say.
So. Against his better judgment, here he was about to get an earful about a man he despised. Also his always cheerful aunt Maki (who was only his senior by a year) was looking at him with an appalled expression. He would certainly have to do some explaining to her.
"Im sorry Naobito but I have no interest in hearing about that man, '' Megumi again exclaimed.
"Then I guess you will have to plug your ears then child" The old man joked in kind.
Hushed laughter invaded the room. A kind of laugh that only came when people only laughed because they thought they had to.
Megumi could only silently grumble. He was getting tired of standing, so he cast his eyes towards whatever open seat he could find. Maki had chairs open to her on both sides but he knew he wouldn't be able to accomplish his -actually Gojo's- agenda if She was going to strangle him. The only other chair that was available was one at the exact end of the table, the side of the rectangularly shaped table that had one chair on it and was saved for the most "important" of figures.
So. He took a seat. If he was going to be forced into hearing about his father, which Gojo only warned him about at the very end of their conversation, then he would at least enjoy the maximum comfort possible. He would surely need it.
"Hey kid, where do you think you're sitting?" A slightly pitched voice came. He had blonde hair, making his hair seem like it was dyed. The man the voice came from looked older than that, that was for sure, but Megumi wasn't even sure if the guy was taller than him.
"Is this seat taken?"
"It certainly won't be by you"
Suddenly the elder voice of Naobito but in, "Have a seat Megumi, you are welcome to sit wherever."
"But father that chair is reserved for-" The younger Zen'in, apparently the clan heads' son, began but was quickly cut off once more.
"Silence Naoya, Megumi shall sit where he pleases". Naobito wore a sly grin on his aged appearance, certainly the gears in his own mind had a plan in motion.
Nevertheless, Megumi took his spot in the chair. Silence then engulfed the room. The Zen'in leader moved slowly, contrary to his reputation, towards a seat. A seat completely parallel to Megumi. It became apparent to Megumi that the seat he was situated in was not just any seat, placed at the end for dramatic effect. A seat directly across from the top elite of the clan didn't seem like a spot just anyone could place themself.
"Now I think it is appropriate that I fully inform you of Megumi's significance", The old man started, pausing to see the rest of his family seated around the table and their faces which were slightly pinched waiting for him to finish his statement.
"He is the sole inheritor of the Clan's greatest and more prestigious cursed technique, the 10 Shadows"
Megumi knew his technique was important. He was once told a story about how a six eyes user of the past was killed by a 10 shadows user. So when the Zen'in whispered amongst their neighbors to the left and right, Megumi knew Gojo was right to suggest the clan would always accept whoever held his technique, regardless of whoever they held affiliations with.
"Father, that can't be true. All the descendants and even distant members of our kin have their techniques documented as soon as they show any cursed potential. We would have been the first to know if this kid had any signs of such a valued technique" The son of the clan head, Naoya refuted with a hint of discontent straining his voice.
"That is true Naoya, but that leads me into the more important subject I wished to tackle. This boy is the direct offspring of someone who had abandoned the clan almost 2 decades ago." A tight frown was now featured on Naobito, voice edging closer to showing his own discomfort. "Megumi Fushiguro is the son of Toji Fushiguro, once Toji Zen'in"
If megumi thought the silence that took over the classroom when Yuuta was outside the door yesterday was tense, this put that to shame. No one said a word, made a sound. The youngest of the clan present himself, Maki, her sister, and a couple young children sitting with their mothers, all looking around puzzled at the noticeable reaction and shift in the room. Even Naoya's eyes went wide, turning to Megumi and looking at him as if he had two heads and 4 eyes.
"Child, around 10 years ago your father made a deal with us-"
"I know all about it"
"Good, then you know that you are a Zen'in"
Megumi didn't bother giving that response. Hopefully it would be the end of the discussion surrounding his father, although he couldn't help but be curious why his name was so revered in the clan if he had abandoned it. Fortunately or unfortunately, it seemed like his question would be answered.
"Who is this guy you are talking about?" Maki's confused voice inquired.
"Someone a weakling such as yourself would know nothing about" Naoya, the first to respond, fired back at her.
"I've never even heard of this fucking guy so-"
"Quiet, both of you" Naobtio finished off. He clearly wished to avoid any headaches caused by his family. He then took the chance to answer Maki's question so that none of the other younger clan members would be rude or arrogant enough to cut into the conversation of the elites.
"Toji Zen'in was a man granted incredible physical strength and a keen sixth sense by means of heavenly restriction. At some point in his later adult life he decided to split off from us. He had apparently found a woman he loved, sadly she would pass away some time later to illness. A couple years later Toji contacted me offering his child in exchange for money. The deal was never completed because Toji himself would be killed a short time afterwards."
Megumi contained his surprise to himself. He didn't know his father was dead, Gojo had never told him anything. Granted, Megumi didn't want to know anything about him but it was still odd that Gojo had never mentioned once that he was deceased. He could see Naobito was staring at him, trying to judge his expression, so Megumi attempted to keep the most neutral one possible.
"Well now that those questions are answered, we can get down to proper business. If you all would please rise and follow me towards our meeting chambers. For some this will be your first time in that room, so I warn you that if you lack the resolve to carry on the will of our clan or are lacking in strength, you should remain outside."
At the Clan head's words many of the older Zen'in stood from their seats, most of them looked to be at least in their late twenties with some looking almost 60. Most of the members standing seemed to be grade 1 sorcerers. Megumi himself also rose from his seat and began to follow the line that began to trail behind Naobito as he led them through the hallways of the estate. He noticed Maki also rise from her seat as well, thankfully her attempt at getting in line next to him was thwarted by 2 older looking men taking the spot behind him.
'So far everything has gone fine' Megumi thought. Gojo only needed him here to say what he needed him to say and now he would get the chance to fulfill that request. Then after tonight he would stay as far away from this place as possible. Eventually the line came to a stop in front of a small corridor.
"For those who have chosen to follow who have not been inside the room I will inform you of its nature. The interior of this room is coated with a specific binding vow. The implicit vow states that those who enter this room and are informed of the vow will be subjected to its effect, preventing those who are unaware from being affected."
A binding vow? Coating the walls of a room? That sounded ridiculous to Megumi. How is a vow forced upon an inanimate object such as the walls of a room. He didn't buy it, if Megumi had to guess he'd say it was actually a shikigami that had somehow cast some type of domain which forced a sure effect, Naobito had not finished his statement yet so he would probably have waited for that in order to make a judgment.
"Those who enter must answer all questions with absolute honesty, it is relative of course to the one answering. After all, one person's truth is completely different from another. If you do not comply with the vow then you will be subjected to pain equal to the injury of your deceit."
The elderly clan head finished his ramblings with a wicked smile, he clearly enjoyed the squirming of the younger Zen'in who had thought themselves right to join the rest of the adults.
Megumi himself remained unfazed, if the injury was equal to the lie then those crafty and crooked enough could slightly bend the truth just enough to mislead the others would only have to deal with a slight amount of pain. The design of the chamber was meant to bring out the truth, but really it was just a competition to see who could come up with the dirtiest lies and the most un-dodgeable questions.
It seemed this revelation and risk deterred some of the possible participants, who were now making their way back towards the dining hall. Two of those being Maki's sister and an older woman walking with her. If he had to guess it was probably her mother although Maki herself was still planted in the small crowd awaiting entrance. The more time passed the more people left, leaving only a handful left standing before the corridor.
"Now that the weaklings have left, Or most of them, we can now proceed."
After a bit more walking through the dark room, devoid of sunlight with only candles illuminating the rest of the chamber, they were presented with a large round table.
"Have a seat, it doesn't matter where you decide to sit."
Megumi quickly found a seat next to another person he had never met before, relieved to see the spot to his left being taken up by a young woman he also didn't recognize. Not to be beaten, Maki scouted the table for the seat parallel to his so that she could also give him her best glare. He wasn't going to let her ruin his mission, he knew tommorows sparring would probably be enough punishment for his upcoming offenses anyway. Once everyone had taken their spot, Naobito signaled for some guards or soldiers -he really had no idea what they were- to remove the vacant chairs. Now here they sat, all awaiting further instruction from the clan head.
"I know some of you have been in many meetings before but this one will…be a little different given the circumstances and context of these important times. Our guest Megumi Zen'in came to me earlier today claiming to have important news that would be of great interest to us." The old man exposited.
The floor then shifted to him, the attention of all others present moving in kind.
Megumi wanted to test the vow of room first and foremost. He knew what Gojo wanted him to say but he also wanted to see the limits of the imbued contract that covered the room. If he could properly abuse the loophole of the injury being equal to the lie then he could lead the clan in the wrong direction.
So he started his statement out with a simple lie that he knew didn't affect his truth all too much, "Yesterday evening-" actually it was in the morning "-I was called into my teacher Satoru Gojo's office." The technique's reaction was practically instantaneous, he could feel a static-like shock on the fingertip of his pointer. So the vow wasn't a lie. He knew if he paused his statement and gave any hint of a reaction the others would catch on and suspect deceit so Megumi continued his statement as if nothing had happened.
"We had a short conversation, however at some point he then called in a classmate of mine, second year Yuuta Okkotsu," at the inclusion of a larger lie Megumi standed to feel his lungs tighten, making it harder to breathe and giving him shortness of breath. He quickly breathed in and out through his nose which seemed to help alleviate some of the discomfort. He needed to keep going though, the more he indulged in this tale the more extreme the symptoms would get. He didn't want that. He needed to get to the point in order to spare himself any possible pain.
"In the midst of their conversation I learned that Satoru Gojo plans to name special grade sorcerer Yuuta Okkotsu as the heir and next in line to be the head of the Gojo clan."
Megumi looked around the table, taking in the faces of all that were there. Unsurprisingly, the whole table looked bewildered.
"What?! Impossible he isn't a relative of the Gojo clan; he can't simply enter into a noble family he has no connection to!" an older looking man stood from his seat and yelled furiously.
"Calm yourself Ougi, you may continue Megumi. I'm sure we are all interested in the specifics of how this is allowed. Allowing a sorcerer without prestigious blood into a clan may fall under grounds of treason for both parties" Naobito stated evenly with a very worried look, it seemed like sweat was beginning to form on his brow as well.
This would be tricky; He couldn't continue talking as if he was narrating the events of yesterday. In order to avoid the effect of the vow it would be most advantageous to simply state things he knew to be true and hope that the others would not ask for more details and context.
"Yuuta Okkotsu is a descendant of Sugawara Michizane just like Satoru Gojo. The blood relation isn't strong but they are cousins."
"Damn that Satoru, the council will overlook this infraction based solely off this one technicality." The one named Ougi again voiced.
"What should we do father? This is the closest our kin have come to getting rid of the Gojo in a millenia, we cannot let this go to waste. If Okkotsu remains the uncontested heir when the vote takes place we could very well squander this opportunity." Naoya came in, his tone laced with worry and subtle fear.
"I agree with you both. Megumi, what do you think we should do about Okkotsu?"
Again the attention was placed on him. No matter how he tried to establish control over the situation he was repeatedly being put on the back foot. As Megumi looked up, ready to give his answer he briefly hesitated when his eyes connected with Maki's, her eyes were wide with concern and practically begged Megumi to not say anything that could lead to harming her classmate. Alas, it was out of his hands. Regardless of what he wanted to say, he knew his truth. It was a truth that Gojo would be alright with him suggesting anyway.
"There is no way to 'take out' Yuuta Okkotsu per say, but there is a more plausible; expelling him or in the best case complete exclusion him from the sorcery world entirely."
The whole table of the Zen'in murmured silently to their left and right. The idea of conspiring the downfall of a special grade shook the table greatly. Removing Satoru was impossible but his future successor seemed a lot more achievable. While the occupants of the table were mostly quiet for the few seconds following Megumi's statement, there was one who absolutely could not remain silent.
"Megumi what the hell are you saying-" The sharp tone and voice Maki cried out, before she could continue to her own reaction Naobtio quickly made a move of his own.
"Naoya, escort Maki out of these chambers, she has been here for too long. She most definitely does not have the clan's best interest. Count yourself lucky Maki, we should have you privately executed. No one would notice anyhow if you went missing. But, I'm a kind and generous clan head so I'll let you off the hook"
"Of course father. Now hold still for a second will you woman" Naoya said, looking down upon the young woman at her seat. He had somehow traveled across the room in a single second. He was ridiculously fast.
"NO! Get your hands off me! Megumi, you bastard, what the hell are you doin-"
SLAP
the piercing echo of a hard slap buzzed throughout the room, a red mark now branding the right side of Maki's face.
"Quiet. you disgrace us with the very sound of your voic-ARHGG" Naoya let out a loud howl of pain when Maki suddenly headbutted him right in the nose, which was now starting drizzle out blood. Maki herself was breathing heavily, her purple rimmed glasses now broken on the ground.
Naoya quickly collected himself, trying not to appear weak infront of his father and the rest of the clan elites, "You wretched whore, I'll make sure you regret that" was the enraged response that clawed its way out of his mouth.
"Go to hell"
"ENOUGH, Naoya! obey my commands and get her out of here. I don't wish to see you here either after this scene you've caused" Naobito old voice commanded, booming off the walls and leaving not an inch for argument.
This only seemed to ignite an even deeper anger inside the son of the clan head. He didn't say another word, he instead harshly and violently grabbed Maki by the hood of her jacket and almost the instant afterward disappeared from Megumi's sight along with Maki.
A shiver ran down Megumi's spine, now after that whole ordeal the room was left in uncomfortable silence. Extreme guilt consumed him for what happened. Maki had no idea of Gojo's scheme, she wasn't supposed to be a victim of this plan. Tsumiki would be ashamed of him if she knew of what was going on.
"Now Megumi, where were we?"
Maki was thrown across the room, her back hitting the hard wooden wall with a hard slam. A thin line of blood was falling from her head, the same spot she had slammed against his nose. Now looking at the bastard and the damage on his face that she had caused, a smug and feral grin appeared on her face.
"Oh Naoya, I'm so sorry, tell me where it hurts most. I'd be happy to make it worse."
It felt amazing to see his arrogant mug all creased up in a snarl, clearly in deep rage at being embarrassed before his superiors. But as the seconds ticked by, the anger plastered onto his face turned into a morbid, horrifying smile. Whatever control Maki thought she had left her as she watched Naoya gaze at her, now without a hint of anger.
"Maki how shall I punish you for this offense", suddenly he was behind her, he had sprinted the distance between them in a second using his technique. Her eyes had barely caught it too, he was just too fast.
"It'd be so easy to just do whatever I please with you. I could beat you. defile you, but the idea of me wasting my time on a piece of trash makes me sick."
Maki had whirled around to strike him when he started speaking behind her, but he would just easily maneuver away and begin pacing around her. They were in an open space but with the massive gap in speed she was effectively cornered anyhow.
"You're already sick in the head"
"So hurtful Maki, you better watch your tone. Did you forget who sleeps inside these walls every once in a while. Unlike you, your sister knows when to keep her mouth shut."
"Stay away from her! She-", Maki was practically shouting across the whole area; Naoya kept whizzing across the space, making sure she was always on the backfoot. She was cut off in the middle of her shout by the projection sorcerer.
"She what Maki? Can't stand me? Maybe next time I see her I should ask, maybe she will elaborate further."
Maki couldn't say anything. Now her face was the one morphing into a snarl. There was nothing that she could respond back with that didn't have any implication of involving Mai.
"Aw, you look so defeated. What happened to all that bravado? With that expression I almost pity you."
"I'll make sure you rot in hell one day" Maki, now not even trying to deliberate on her traitorous words, spoke in a harsh growl.
"Always with the empty threats. I'm bored of you, if you'll excuse me I am going to plan for myself a way to save this clan, as is the responsibility of its future leader."
Maki didn't miss what he was referring to at all, yet she could do nothing but stand there with her fists clenched so hard they drew blood. Even after trying to hone her power to its limit; trying to find new depths to the level of superhuman strength she could draw from herself, she was still powerless. This entire time she had the illusion of freedom, that she had escaped the chains of her family. Right now the chains could still be felt tight around her wrists as ever. As things were now, she had no chance of defying or fighting her clan. No chance of saving her sister, regardless of if Mai hated her or not. No chance of helping Yuuta, no matter if he needed it or not.
Because of them she could never achieve a grade promotion. Because of them she would never have her sister by her side. Because of them she wasn't free.
Despite everything Maki was still a Zen'in.
There was nothing she could do about it.
She hated it.
Yet Maki knew she wouldn't be able to live with herself if she let Naoya get the last word in though. her features again took the form of smugness and confidence. She was going to get the last laugh.
"Go plan whatever your halfwit mind can come up with. Your daddy won't ever look at you the same after you got bitched by a woman."
Naoya up to that point had been walking away with his back turned, but upon hearing these words he froze in place. Slowly he turned his head around to face the woman who had dared to again stomp on and injure his pride.
"You really are a glutton for punishment. Very well then, I'll provide you the beating you are asking for."
Inside the Meeting Chamber
"Now Megumi, where were we?" Naobito inquires.
"I believe the child was stating that the only way to feasibly the thorn that is Okkotsu is to by some means exclude him from the Jujutsu world, basically marking him a criminal." Ougi supplies for his brother.
"Right, now Megumi how would you suppose we 'remove' a special grade sorcerer?"
This wasn't good. A couple ideas did spawn in Megumi's head as to how he would hypothetically remove a special grade sorcerer, an extremely rare feat in any time. Megumi wondered if he should give his ideas and what kind of effect the power of the chamber would have on him.
'Does lying through omission count?' Megumi wondered. This was a question he would have to get his answer to if he wanted to be able to keep his hand of cards hidden.
"I don't really know." There it was again, the tightness in his lungs. So it seems dodging the question does not count as harshly against the laws of the technique.
"Well that is a shame. Does anyone else have any ideas?"
A couple moments passed before one tall, older looking man raised his hand slightly to indicate he had a suggestion.
"Yes Junichi?"
"I see no reason why we cannot frame him for a regular offense as is. If we knew more about his powers or ability we could frame him for a murder. No doubt that if a special grade was charged with a homicide he would be the most wanted criminal in all of the sorcerer world."
"That sounds enticing but I doubt that an offense would carry much weight. A year ago he was involved in the brutal injuring of two grade 2 sorcerers and a killing of one grade 1. If he hasn't been executed already then he definitely won't be, especially since he has Gojo on his side" Ougi responded.
"I have an idea" a smaller man, shorter than Megumi for sure, spoke up.
"Go on Ranta."
"All we need is to sever the connection between the Gojo clan and himself. Satoru Gojo may be the head of that family but if the rest of them brought a unanimous vote to the upper council there would be nothing that Satoru could do." The smaller Ranta noted.
"That is true. Why put in all the extra work when we just need to solve the problem at its root." Naobito then stopped completely after he had finished that statement. His impassive face up to that point then changed slightly, almost impossible for anyone to notice.
"Megumi, You are the underclassmen of Okkotsu correct?"
"Yes."
"Good to confirm, I thought I had heard it somewhere but I needed to be sure. I know you have not been here very long but I am sending you home Megumi." Naobito exclaimed, his underhanded smile unnerving.
"Are you sure Naobito? I can be here to discuss more." Megumi asked. He was getting anxious. He was not expecting this to happen. The conversation was just getting to its most important part and he would miss out on it. Why?
"With respect, I still lack faith in your motivation, Megumi. Our agreement was that you would be allowed in the meeting so long as a binding vow could be placed between us. Yet I still cannot trust you."
Megumi remembered the vow well. Naobito promised him that he would be allowed in the meeting so long as a vow prevented him from sharing any information he learned that day. He knew it was insurance for the scenario where Megumi was trying to con them all. Gojo claimed to have faith in Megumi's ability to deliver the information he needed to and said that he should take any vow they set. considered himself lucky for having the 10 shadows, had he not Naobito likely never would have even considered the request.
"I see, thank you for the opportunity" Megumi rose from his seat and bowed, attempting to show respect.
Megumi then began to move towards the exit of the chamber. When he finally shut the doors behind him as he left his mind was working in full force. He had done what Gojo asked but he had no idea what true plan the Zen'in would form. This likely meant his teacher was going to ask him to continuously perform this favor, using his cursed technique as leverage to get closer to the clan. What worse is what had happened to Maki, to see her treated so horribly was weighing on his consciousness to an enormous extent. It was his fault that Naoya struck her.
As Megumi rounded the next corner of the wooden hallway he was greeted with the subject of his thoughts and a horrifying sight; the beaten and bloodied body of his senior.
Megumi instantly rushed towards Maki, she was unconscious for sure. Thankfully it seemed the damage was limited to bruising and small gashes across her arm. He checked the wound to see if they were still fresh. When he confirmed that they were he knew he had to get her to reverse curse technique user so that she may be healed, but all the way away from Jujutsu High and at this hour he had no idea when Ichiji could come and pick them up. But when Megumi peered back down at his relative he was shocked to see her cuts had gotten smaller; her body was naturally healing at an exponential rate. He could also see that she was regaining consciousness as well.
He did not expect her to shoot wide awake and bolt upright. "Megumi?"
"Zen'in you are in bad shape, let me help you get up so we can leave this place."
"You…What did you say to those bastards about Yuuta" She looked at him with anger he expected to receive. Despite her clothes being bloody and her neck bruised, clearly meaning someone had tried to choke her, the expression she wore was still quite intimidating.
"Zen'in now is not a good time, Everything can be explained in more detail by Gojo"
"So it was his idea" She hissed, "That fool doesn't have any idea how much Yuuta admires him and this is what he gets in return."
"It's more complicated than that, the reason we came up with this plan was so that the vote would be delayed past the goodwill event to buy some time. If the rest of them are dierberating on a strategy they will definitely the higher ups for more time before the voting can take place."
"I don't care for all of this political bullshit, Yuuta doesn't either. He is only doing this because Gojo asked him to and he's too nice and selfless to say no."
"I understand your concern over Okkotsu, But Zen'in you know better than anyone how capable he is. He would be alright with this plan."
"Of course he would be, but I'm not. I won't allow this horrid family of mine to take Yuuta simply because Gojo needed someone to use as his pawn" She bit out in distress.
"You know I don't like the guy much either but give him some more credit than that, He is thinking about his family and Jujutsu society as a whole. I'm going to call Ichiji and ask him to drive us back to Jujutsu high alright, you need to see Ms. Ieri if she is still around and if you really want answers you can talk to Gojo yourself about all your questions."
Maki still looked at him in distaste and disappointment. He knew he deserved it though. In response to what he said she only nodded and picked herself up off the floor without help.
They walked through the halls until they made it to the front gardens of the estate; they were surprised to see that the already massive effort they had put into security had practically tripled. Even more concerning was that some of the soldiers were mutting that a veil had been briefly casted for about 20 minutes. There might have been an intruder inside the compound the entire time.
Creepy.
Eventually someone did come, Nitta this time. She thankfully didn't ask questions about Maki's bruises or bloody shirt.
There was little to no conversation the majority of the ride back.
By the time they did get back Maki hopped out of the car and began walking inside. He wanted to at least apologize, like Tsumiki had always reminded him to do after he got in a fight at school, for what he did.
"Zen'in I just want you to know I am very sorry for what happened."
"Yeah alright. I've had worse, but the person you should really be apologizing to is Yuuta."
Yuuta Okkotsu didn't get much sleep at night and when he did it was usually interrupted. So when he was tossing and turning in his bed trying to get comfortable and then suddenly heard a knock at his bedroom door, he knew there was no reason to keep trying.
However the last thing he expected to see when he opened the door was Maki standing in front of him dressed in a shirt covered in blood, a torn jacket that displayed faint cuts, and bruises on her neck and forehead. Yuuta could swear his heart almost dropped when he saw her whimper his name feebly and collapse in his arms.
Who the hell did this to her?
