"Would you still love me if I was a tree?"
Harry had to stop chopping the vegetables for their stew later as Daphne suddenly blurted out that question.
"What?" he asked, confused and trying to decide whether he heard her wrong.
Daphne gave him a pout that would have looked cute if Harry wasn't feeling lost.
"Would you still love me if I was a tree?" she repeated, and crossed her arms. She was seated across on the kitchen island at Harry's apartment with a plate of leftover carrot cake.
He tried to think of an answer. When he was about to answer, it would escape his mind causing him to close his mouth.
"Why would you be a tree?" Harry settled to ask, which only deepened his girlfriend's frown.
"I don't know," she threw her hands over her head and stared at him. "Maybe I got cursed or something like that."
Harry let go of the knife and scratched his head.
"Can't I just look for the person who cursed you and bring you back?" he tried to offer. Daphne looked like she was thinking for a moment but shook her head.
"No, that's not a choice." She replied.
"What kind of tree would you be?" Harry asked again, causing Daphne to roll her eyes.
"Does it matter?" she countered with a scary look on her face that made him raise his hands.
"I mean, I would probably do my best to bring you back," he started as he picked up his knife to continue what he was doing earlier.
Daphne was about to retort, but Harry cut her off.
"But, if you were to become a tree with no way of bringing you back, then I would make sure I was living near you." Harry moved to the next vegetable as he put the already chopped ones aside.
"I would make sure I could still be there for you. Ensure that you're doing good and healthy. I'd make sure the soil under you is providing you enough nutrients. I'd call Neville to help me craft a garden around you so you wouldn't feel lonely. I'd sit down under your shade reading you your favorite books. Then when I die I'd make sure I'd be buried in the soil underneath you so I'll still be with you."
"So, yeah, even as a tree, I'd still love you," Harry said, finishing his answer and chopping the vegetables. When he looked up, he saw that Daphne was teary-eyed. He immediately panicked thinking he must have messed up his answer, but was relieved when she ran and hugged him.
Harry chuckled as he rubbed Daphne's back, trying to soothe her.
His mind was still stuck on his earlier thought though, why would she be a tree?
