CHAPTER 4
CITY STREETS
The morning sun painted the city streets with a soft, golden hue as Rin navigated her way to to the café she'd worked in before taking the job as Sesshomaru's assistant. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Rin pushed open the door to the quaint little café at the corner of the street. The familiar chime of the bell echoed, announcing her arrival.
Behind the counter stood a barista, busy at work amidst the whirring machines and steaming milk. Rin's gaze swept across the cozy space, the memories flooding back with each glance at the tables she'd once served. The familiar chime of the bell had announced her arrival, drawing the attention of the barista behind the counter. Sango, only a few years older than Rin, flashed a warm smile as she emerged from the back.
"Rin! Look at you, it feels like it's been ages," she exclaimed, wiping her hands on her apron.
Rin's lips curled into a fond smile. "Hey, Sango. It does feel like a lifetime," she replied, her voice carrying a hint of nostalgia.
Sango nodded knowingly. "Your usual?" she asked, already reaching for a cup.
Rin chuckled softly. "Yes, please. And maybe an extra shot for good measure."
Sango laughed. "Rough morning?"
"You could say that," Rin replied with a sheepish grin.
While Sango expertly prepared the coffee, Rin's gaze wandered around the familiar space, memories of early mornings and hasty breakfasts flooding her thoughts.
"Here you go," Sango said, sliding the cup across the counter.
"Thanks, Sango. It's been great to see you, I'll make this a habit! " Rin said appreciatively.
Sango smiled warmly. "You're always welcome here. Don't be a stranger!"
With a nod of gratitude, Rin cradled the cup, feeling the warmth seep into her hands. The café, a haven from the past, provided a sense of comfort amidst the bustling city. With a wistful glance around the space, Rin stepped back onto the lively street, the taste of the warm drink mingling with bittersweet memories, a testament to a chapter in her life that she held dear.
As she sipped her warm latte, thoughts of her past flitted through her mind like fragments of a distant dream, snippets of moments that shaped the person she had become. Rin's mind drifted back, returning to a pivotal moment etched into the corridors of her memory—a fragmented recollection of her first arrival at the orphanage she'd called home the better part of her life.
At the tender age of eight, she stood at the threshold of the unfamiliar, her small hand tightly grasping the worn handle of a suitcase containing the sum of her worldly possessions. The façade of the orphanage loomed before her, a daunting edifice that would become her sanctuary.
The building's weathered exterior exuded an air of solemnity, its gray façade bearing the scars of time and the echoes of countless stories. The orphanage was a tapestry of whispered hopes and silent dreams, a sanctuary for the unclaimed souls seeking solace within its walls.
The creaking doors parted slowly, revealing the dimly lit foyer. Rin's wide eyes took in the unfamiliar space, her grip tightening on the handle of her suitcase. At the far end of the room sat a cozy armchair, where an elderly woman with gentle eyes sat reading.
The matron, a figure of warmth and reassurance amidst the somber backdrop, welcomed Rin with a gentle smile that eased the tension coiled within her chest. The kind gesture offered a glimmer of hope amid the sea of uncertainty, a silent promise of safety and belonging.
The woman glanced up from her reading, her warm smile illuminating the room. "Well, hello there, child," she greeted, her voice a comforting melody amid the somber quietude of the lobby.
Rin hesitated for a moment before taking cautious steps toward the woman. "Hello," she replied softly, her voice betraying her apprehension.
The woman patted the seat beside her, beckoning Rin to join her. "Come, child. No need to be nervous. I'm Kaede. What might your name be?"
Rin inched closer, settling beside Kaede. "I'm Rin," she murmured, her gaze fixed on her shoes.
Kaede nodded kindly. "Rin, what a beautiful name! You're going to like it here, dear. We're like a big family," she reassured, her reading glasses placed softly on the table beside her.
As Rin cast a cautious glance around the lobby, Kaede continued, "It might feel strange now, but you'll make wonderful friends here. Everyone's friendly, you'll see."
A hint of a smile tugged at the corners of Rin's lips, touched by Kaede's warmth. "Thank you," she murmured, finding a sliver of comfort in the woman's words.
Kaede's eyes twinkled with understanding. "Anytime you need someone to talk to, dear, I'm just here," she offered, her wrinkled hand patting Rin's gently.
The faint warmth of that moment with Kaede stayed with Rin.
As memories of her arrival waned, the echoes of that first day lingered—a testament to the resilience that bloomed in the midst of uncertainty, and the unwavering spirit that guided her through the labyrinth of life's trials and triumphs.
With each step closer to the office building, Rin's thoughts turned to the present. She pondered the tasks awaiting her, the challenges yet to be conquered, and the intricacies of her role as Sesshomaru's assistant.
Entering the office lobby, Rin observed the ebb and flow of colleagues, each immersed in their own purposeful stride. She exchanged polite nods and brief greetings, a subtle acknowledgment of the shared space they inhabited.
Upon reaching her desk, she settled into the familiar rhythm of preparing for the day ahead. The soft glow of her computer screen beckoned, a canvas awaiting the strokes of productivity and innovation.
Her gaze wandered toward Sesshomaru's office, where he was engrossed in his morning routine. A brief, thoughtful smile crossed Rin's lips as she contemplated the unreadable figure he presented, a mystery she was determined to unravel one interaction at a time.
Rin sat at her desk, her focus unwavering as she maneuvered through a series of reports. Her determination to excel in her role as Sesshomaru's assistant remained steadfast, a silent promise she made to herself.
As she delved into her tasks, Kagome approached, her warm smile a welcome interruption. "Rin, mind if I steal you for a moment?"
Rin glanced up, a hint of curiosity in her gaze. "Not at all, Kagome. What's up?"
Kagome motioned toward the window, a signal for a change of scenery. "I need your opinion on something."
Curiosity piqued, Rin followed Kagome to the office break room, a space that offered a respite from the structured confines of their workstations.
"So, spill it. What's on your mind?" Rin inquired, a curious smile playing on her lips.
Kagome leaned against the counter, a folder in hand. "I've been mulling over this event we're planning for next month, and I value your perspective."
Rin nodded, her interest piqued by the prospect of contributing her ideas. "I'm all ears. What do you need help with?"
Kagome and Rin huddled in the breakroom, their conversation hushed, yet animated.
"I'm torn, Rin. We need a place that's both elegant and unique. Any thoughts?" Kagome asked, tapping through venue options on her tablet.
Rin paused, considering. "What about the café a few blocks away?" Her eyes lit up with excitement. "It has this eclectic charm that might set the right mood."
Kagome's eyebrows rose in surprise. "The café? It's not a typical choice. What makes you suggest that?"
Rin leaned in, a smile playing on her lips. "It's more than just a café. It has this warm, inviting ambiance, perfect for an intimate event. Plus, the owners are flexible and could transform the space beautifully."
Kagome considered Rin's suggestion. "That's an interesting idea, something out of the ordinary. But before we decide, you'll need to get Sesshomaru's approval. His vision might differ."
"Absolutely," Rin affirmed, her enthusiasm palpable. "I'll make the arrangements and see if they're available for a quick discussion. I'm sure it'll be a hit!"
Kagome nodded, impressed by Rin's proposal. "Sounds good. Let's see what Sesshomaru thinks. Your idea might just be the unique touch we need for the event."
As they delved into the details of the upcoming event, Kagome's confidence in Rin's insights became evident. The exchange of ideas flowed seamlessly between the two, a testament to the budding camaraderie that had formed.
"Thanks, Rin. Your input always brings a unique flair to the table," Kagome remarked with a grateful smile.
"It's a team effort," Rin replied, a modest shrug accompanying her words.
Their conversation tapered off as they made their way back to their respective desks, the buzz of productivity resuming around them. Rin settled back into her chair, a sense of fulfillment accompanying the knowledge that her contributions were valued.
Sesshomaru sat behind a meticulously organized desk. His amber eyes, framed by the silver waves of his hair, scanned through the financial reports that lay before him. His tailored suit exuded sophistication, a reflection of his position and the aura of authority he commanded. The room exuded an air of quiet elegance, the only sounds being the soft tap of his pen against the polished wood and the occasional faint murmurs drifting in from the bustling office beyond the door.
As Rin approached his office, her steps were light, the click of her heels resonating softly along the polished hallway. Her attire was eclectic yet tasteful, a reflection of her creative nature. Her long brown hair cascaded in loose waves down her shoulders, framing her face adorned with medium brown eyes that sparkled with energy. A peachy hue graced her skin, complementing her petite yet confident stature.
With a gentle knock on Sesshomaru's door, Rin entered, her eyes bright with excitement. The door opened to reveal Sesshomaru engrossed in his work, his gaze briefly lifting to acknowledge her presence before returning to the documents laid out before him. The room was infused with the scent of fresh tea from a cup placed on Sesshomaru's desk, steam rising gently as if beckoning an indulgent pause.
"Sesshomaru, do you have a moment?" Rin inquired, her voice carrying a blend of professional poise and youthful enthusiasm.
He glanced up, a slight furrow marring his otherwise composed expression. "Of course, Rin. What brings you here?" His voice was measured, carrying the weight of both authority and restraint.
"I wanted to discuss the upcoming event—the product launch," Rin replied, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "I have a few ideas for the venue."
As she spoke, the room seemed to brighten with her fervor, contrasting the otherwise serene ambiance that enveloped Sesshomaru's workspace. The interplay of their distinct energies filled the room, an understated harmony between his composed demeanor and her vibrant presence.
"I've been considering a venue for the launch," Rin began, her voice steady yet tinged with enthusiasm. "There's a café, Café Coral, just a couple blocks away. It might be a perfect fit for the launch."
Sesshomaru regarded her with his characteristic poise, his amber eyes observant. "Interesting choice, considering you only received the details about the product this morning."
Rin maintained her composure, hiding any hint of surprise. "Yes, I've been thinking about potential venues. This café aligns well with the image we want to project."
He leaned back in his chair, a subtle aura of curiosity underlying his composed exterior. "You move quite swiftly, Miss Naito."
"I believe in making an effort to adapt swiftly, Mr. Iwasaki," Rin responded, her gaze meeting his with unwavering confidence.
Sesshomaru acknowledged her determination with a nod. "Go ahead and set up a meeting with the owner. Let's see if the cafe fits our requirements."
As Rin turned to leave, a silent acknowledgment passed between them—a nod to her efficiency and initiative, and a subtle hint that Sesshomaru had been watching her progress closely, even if it didn't always appear so on the surface.
In the hallway outside Sesshomaru's office, Rin swiftly dialed Sango's number, her anticipation evident as the call connected.
"Hey, Sango! It's Rin Naito. I hope I'm not calling at a bad time."
"Rin! What's going on?" Sango responded warmly, recalling their recent meeting at the café.
Rin's heart raced with excitement as she delved into the reason for her call. "I hope I'm not being too forward, but I have this fantastic opportunity," Rin began, her excitement palpable. "We're considering venues for a product launch, and your café came to mind. Would it be possible to bring my boss by to see the space? "
Sango's response was immediate, filled with genuine interest. "Absolutely! I've missed working with you and seeing you today was so nice. It's an honor to be considered, especially considering it's for such a big launch."
"I think it really has the potential to impress my boss, Sango! Thank you so much," Rin exclaimed, her enthusiasm radiating through the phone. "I'll be in touch soon to discuss the details."
Sango's enthusiasm was evident in her voice. "I hope it's okay to arrange it after hours tomorrow. I'll close a little earlier to make sure its presentable. "
As the call ended, Rin couldn't contain her excitement, her mind already racing with plans and possibilities. The prospect of hosting the launch at Sango's café felt like the perfect blend of nostalgia and progress—a testament to her past intertwined with her present endeavors.
The clock struck late, the office almost emptied, save for Rin and Sesshomaru. As Rin gathered her belongings, the pitter-patter of rain tapped against the windows, the downpour intensifying with each passing minute.
"Looks like the rain won't be letting up anytime soon," Sesshomaru observed casually, glancing at the streaks of water racing down the glass panes.
Rin nodded, zipping up her coat and preparing to brave the weather. "I'll be fine. I don't mind the rain," she reassured him, her tone laced with determination.
As Rin prepared to head for the subway, Sesshomaru noticed the relentless rain outside. He quickly instructed his driver to wait and grabbed an umbrella before catching up to Rin.
"Rin, wait a moment," he called out, reaching her just as she was about to step outside.
She turned to him, surprised by his sudden appearance. "Yes, Sesshomaru?"
"It's pouring out there. Let me walk you to my car. I'll have the driver take you home, ,if you're heading to the subway, I could drop you off on my way. I'd like to see the exterior of the café you mentioned, anyway" he offered, holding the umbrella over her head.
A faint flicker of surprise flashed across Rin's face. "Oh, the café! Right, it's a bit of a walk from the station. But it's no trouble, really," she insisted, not wanting to impose.
"It's not a problem at all. I insist," he countered, his tone firm yet polite.
Rin hesitated for a moment, the offer catching her off guard. "Thank you, Sesshomaru."
Under the canopy of the umbrella, Sesshomaru's silver hair glistened faintly in the rain, catching the subdued light of the street lamps. His tall, elegant frame moved with a certain grace. His amber eyes held an unreadable depth, but there was a hint of guarded concern that surfaced as he ensured Rin was shielded from the rain.
Beside him, Rin's long brown hair was dampened by the rain, the strands curling slightly at the ends. Her pretty brown eyes shimmered with a mix of emotions—a blend of gratitude, surprise, and an unexpected hint of attraction.
In this shared moment, their appearances seemed to soften, the rain framing them in a sort of cinematic glow. Despite the businesslike exterior, there was an undercurrent of vulnerability and unspoken understanding that tethered them together under the shelter of the umbrella.
Shielded by the umbrella, they hurried to where his car was parked. The driver opened the door for Rin as Sesshomaru settled the umbrella back in its place. "We'll be taking her home after a quick stop," he instructed the driver before turning to Rin. "I'd like to see the exterior of this café you mentioned."
"Yes, it's not far," she confirmed, guiding him with directions.
The car cruised by the cafe's neighborhood, the rain casting a glistening sheen over the streets. Rin pointed out the charming exterior as they passed, offering a glimpse of the place she held dear.
The café revealed itself—a charming, two-story establishment adorned with ivy crawling along the sides of the red-bricked walls. Large, arched windows framed in antique woodwork offered glimpses into the warm ambiance within. A small, wrought-iron balcony on the upper floor boasted pots of flowers, adding a splash of color against the overcast skies.
The cafe's sign, weathered by time but still retaining its allure, hung from a decorative post above the entrance. The name "Café Coral" was etched in an elegant cursive, the letters painted in faded gold against a backdrop of muted blues and greens. Soft lighting peeked through the windows, casting a cozy glow on the rain-splattered pavement outside.
Despite the rain, there was an inviting aura about the place, an unspoken promise of warmth, comfort, and the subtle aroma of freshly brewed coffee that seemed to linger in the moist air.
"Thank you for showing me," Sesshomaru said, genuine appreciation in his voice.
"It's a lovely spot and so different from what we usually see here," Rin replied, a soft smile gracing her lips.
As they drove toward Rin's apartment, Sesshomaru's concern lingered, his gaze drifting to the storefronts they passed. The rain continued to fall, a backdrop to the silent exchange of gestures and unspoken concerns. The city lights, diffused by the downpour, cast a soft, shimmering glow on the wet pavements, creating a moody, cinematic scene.
The neon signs that once proudly announced bustling eateries and chic boutiques now appear distorted, their colors muted and flickering in the rain. The streetlamps, their halos dulled by the cascading droplets, barely illuminate the surroundings, leaving swathes of the street shrouded in obscurity.
The buildings, usually standing tall and proud during daylight, now loom ominously, their facades obscured by the night and rain, occasionally interrupted by a flash of lightning that momentarily paints the scene in an eerie brightness. Dark alleys and hidden corners seem to whisper secrets, inviting both intrigue and caution.
As the car glides to a stop, the rain continues its relentless descent, drumming a steady rhythm on the car's roof. Rin's apartment building, a worn but stately structure, stands amidst the darkened cityscape, the soft glow of the entrance lights offering a faint beacon in the night.
Sesshomaru steps out of the car, moving swiftly to open an umbrella before Rin has a chance to get wet. Shielded by the shelter of the umbrella, they walk together toward the entrance. The rain forms puddles on the sidewalk, reflecting the fragmented images of streetlights and the passing cars.
"Thank you for the ride, Sesshomaru," Rin said, her voice barely audible above the rain.
"It's no trouble," he replied, holding the umbrella over them as they approached the building. "It doesn't seem to be the safest area, especially at night."
The building's exterior, adorned with aged bricks and a hint of grandeur from decades past, looms above them as they reach the front door. Sesshomaru holds the umbrella protectively over Rin, the soft yellow light of the entrance casting a warm, inviting aura against the bleak night.
"Yeah, it can come off a bit dodgy, especially in this weather." Rin agreed, fumbling for her keys in her bag.
They stand at the threshold, the rain creating a symphony around them, a moment of silent hesitation hanging in the air. Rin reaches for her keys, a gesture to unlock the door, turning slightly to bid Sesshomaru a polite yet grateful farewell.
The ambiance is laden with an unspoken tension, a subtle dance between propriety and an unexpressed connection. Sesshomaru's amber eyes reflect a mix of concern and something deeper, hidden behind his reserved demeanor. The downpour seemed to intensify as they reached the entrance. Rin turned to face him, the raindrops glistening on her coat. "Thanks again. I appreciate it."
Sesshomaru nodded, his expression guarded yet oddly contemplative. "It was not as far from the office as I thought. You must be a regular." He looked at her noting the slight flush of her cheeks. "I'll wait for you to go in."
"I know it seems like a bad area, but it's really not so bad." Rin presented him with a reassuring smile. "You could say that I'm a bit of a regular there." her eyes meeting his for a brief moment before she unlocked the door. "Goodnight, Sesshomaru."
"Goodnight, Rin," he replied.
The moment lingered for Sesshomaru, the patter of rain and the distant hum of the city punctuating the quiet stillness. He watched the door close behind her, a mix of conflicting emotions flickering across his composed countenance, before he turned and headed back to the car, leaving behind the charm of the rain-soaked night. Sesshomaru reminisced on the slight blush he'd seen across her cheeks. He then realized how close they'd been underneath the umbrella.
A/N: Uploading thsi chapter was a nightmare! I had to upload all the chapters again because I messed up! T-T Anyway's leave me a review if you like it so far. I know not much has gone on yet, but we're working on it! I just can't promise anything when it comes to the chapters being consistent in terms of length. I just stop when I feel like it's enough. There's a plan! What are your thoughts?
