Johnathan and I sprinted through the streets of Atlanta until we turned onto a street with a huge horde of geeks surrounding what looked like a tank. My eyes then caught sight of a man dressed in a police uniform crawling out through the top. I ran for the man, Jonathan hot on my heels. The police officer smiled in relief when he saw Johnathan and I running up to him. But neither he nor Johnathan and I got the chance to say a word, because the walkers had spotted us. The cop seemed to know where to go, because he made his way to a fenced off alley way where a young Asian man was waiting for him. I was glad that neither the cop or the Asian kid minded Johnathan and I tagging along while we escaped the horde of walkers. And the four of us climbed up a ladder, barely missing the hands of the walkers clambering around the bottom of the ladder.
Half way up the ladder, the Asian kid stepped up onto a small platform. The cop, Johnathan and I followed after him. When the four of us were safely on the small platform, we used that moment to catch our breaths. However, the Asian kid was not entirely happy with the cop. "Nice moves there, Clint Eastwood. You the new sheriff coming in to clean up the town?"
The cop only shook his head. He took another minute to take another breath. "That wasn't my intention."
"Yeah, whatever. Yeehaw. You're still a dumbass."
I had no idea what happened before Johnathan and I ended up back home. But based on the fright I had caught in the cops eyes when his eyes met mine the second he spotted me after jumping out of the tank, he had no idea what had happened to the citizens of Atlanta. My patience was thin. "Climb down out of his ass, kid." I snapped. Both the cop and the Asian kid met my eyes. But I ignored and continued. "It's not fair to chew him out when he clearly had no idea what he was going to run into. And based on the fright I saw in this man's eyes after he climbed out of the tank, he's just barely wrapping his mind around the fact that this horror is now a real life reality we're living in."
Shooting me a smile of thanks, the cop then turned to the kid for him to shake. "Rick Grimes. Thank you."
"Glenn. You're welcome." He shook Rick's hand then turned to me. "Who are you? I don't remember you."
"I'm Aria. And this is Johnathan. We just arrived back in Atlanta ourselves when we saw Rick climb out of the tank after escaping the walkers munching on the horse. We weren't exactly going to stay down there, either."
Glenn nodded while shaking my hand then Johnathan's. "That's fair." He gave both Johnathan and I a once over. "You said you two came back to Atlanta?"
"I did." I confirmed. "We did."
"What were you both doing before this shit hit the fan?"
"Johnathan and I were in Israeli Military."
"Military?" Glenn's voice was full of surprise. "The military was the first to go down when the dead began walking."
I clarified. "Johnathan and I were over in Israel when the dead began walking."
Glenn's eyes bugged out of their sockets in horror! "You mean this nightmare is world wide?"
Johnathan and I nodded in unison. Glenn gripped the railing to keep himself steady. But he ended up leaning forward and caught sight of the walkers below. "Oh, no." All four of us looked down to see one of the walkers, after being pushed by its hungry friends, was now trying to pull its body up. All four of us now looked up at the ladder we had to climb. Glenn's optimism didn't help brighten the situation. "The bright side, it'll be the fall that kills us. I'm a glass half full kind of guy."
After ascending the rest of the ladder, Rick, Johnathan and I followed Glenn across the roof to a locked hatch and we waited while he opened it. Rick spoke first. "Are you the one who barricaded the alley?"
"Somebody did, I guess when the city got overrun." Glenn's admittance was nonchalance. "Whoever did it was thinking not many walkers would get through."
Rick switched the conversation. "Back at the tank, why did you stick your neck out for me?" He asked while Glenn opened the hatch, ready to climb down the ladder.
Glenn shrugged. "Call it foolish, naive hope that if I'm ever that far up shit creek, somebody might do the same thing for me. Guess I'm an even bigger dumbass than you."
Rick, Johnathan and I climbed down the ladder after Glenn, the four of us now running through an office building and back outside to only descend a flight of stairs. Glenn whipped out a walkie talkie. "I'm back. Got three guests plus four walkers in the alley."
Glenn and Rick froze when we reached the bottom of the stair, but two men burst through a door in full body gear and began bashing in the brains of two walkers the same time Johnathan and I dropped the other two with ease. The four of us followed the two men through the door they had come out of. Slamming it closed behind us.
Rick, Johnathan and I had just barely entered the department store, when a woman pushed Rick against a counter, putting a gun in his face. My patience had definitely worn thin. I put myself between Rick and the barrel of the gun held in the woman's hand, her face growing even more angry. I didn't care. "You son of a bitch. We ought to kill you."
"It's not nice to threaten people with a gun to their head." The woman ignored me.
One of the men spoke up. "Andrea, just chill out."
The other man spoke up. "Come on, ease up."
Andrea scoffed. "Ease up? You're kidding me, right? We're dead because of this asshole."
I lost my patience! "Climb down out of his ass, honey." I snapped. All eyes were on me now. I didn't care. "It's not fair to chew him out when he clearly had no idea what he was going to run into. And based on the fright I saw in this man's eyes after he climbed out of the tank, he's just barely wrapping his mind around the fact that this horror is now a real life reality we're living in." I knocked the gun our of Andrea's hand and caught it with mine. She tried getting in my face, but when my eyes locked with hers, she froze — as did the others upon seeing the look in my eyes. I knew exactly why all of the faces in the room contorted to fright. My brown eyes were cold and calculating with no ounce of love and tenderness. Before them stood Aria, the Battle-Scarred Israeli Warrior and Last Remaining Queen of the Line of David, with unforgiveness in my steadfast stance. My body was flexed, at the ready to strike. All faces were full of shock. I scoffed when I held Andrea's gun out to her. My next words were cold. "Before you start making threats, honey, make sure the safety is off. That's the first rule of learning how to use a gun."
She snatched her gun back, holstering it. Her voice was calmer, but still full of fear when she backed away from me. "We're all dead because of him."
Rick was confused. "I don't understand."
Morales pointed to the doors of the department store while we spoke. All of our heads turned to follow his line of sight. "We came into the city to scavenge supplies. The key to scavenging is surviving. The only way to surviving is sneaking in and out; tiptoeing. Not shooting up the street like it's the O.K. Corral." The walkers were clawing and banging at the doors. One was even trying to break the glass with a rock.
"Every walker heard you popping off rounds."
"You just rang the dinner bell."
All of us backed away from the doors. "I think some grace should be given to him." I hissed. "It's not fair to chew him out when he clearly had no idea what he was going to run into. And based on the fright I saw in his eyes, he's just barely wrapping his head around this is the new reality we live in."
"Fine." Someone broke the silence. "How about you? What were you doing out there with the cop?"
"The cop has a name." I shot back. "My name is Aria." I pointed to Johnathan who had remained quiet. "This is Johnathan. We just arrived back at Atlanta when we saw Rick climbing out of the tank after escaping the walkers feeding on the horse."
"You both came back from Atlanta?" Another spoke while everyone gave Johnathan and I a once over. "Came back to Atlanta from where?"
"Johnathan and I were in the Israeli Military over in Israel."
"Military? That's crap."
"Ain't no damn military."
"Military were the first to go down when the shit hit the fan."
"Don't confuse the U.S. Military with the Israeli Military." I snapped. "The Israeli Military are over in Israel, not the U.S." I had to fight the growing tears from the thought of my people facing the same horrors there as these people here in Atlanta. I swallowed thickly and took a deep breath to keep my anxiety down.
Suddenly, the sound of a gun firing interrupted. "Oh no. Is that Dixon?" My heart stopped beating when I heard the name. Johnathan put a comforting hand on my shoulder and I shot him a grateful smile before bolting up the stairs to the roof where the sound of gunfire came from.
