Now and Forever

Chapter 15

Christine was glad to get home. As much as she had enjoyed the time with Mike and felt they were communicating much better; she had missed the girls. Thankfully, when they were due to go back to the city the next month; Mike was planning on the girls going with them. He was going to get rooms in a hotel room and show the girls the city.

She was glad he had agreed to sleep in her room with her and didn't seem phased when Hannah asked if they were 'hooking up.' It was humorous and fairly embarrassing. That night, as Mike settled in next to her; she smiled over at him.

"Thanks for staying in here with me. It's a really comfortable bed, but even more so with you in here." Christine said as she cuddled close.

"When I bought the mattress, I wasn't thinking about my comfort level. Turns out, I find it very comfortable too." Mike said.

"Good. I'm glad." Christine answered.

"So, what did you think about Hannah's question?" Mike asked.

"About us hooking up?" Christine asked with a laugh.

"Yeah. It was kind of embarrassing to be put on the spot." Mike remarked.

"Did you mind it?" Christine asked, suddenly concerned.

"No. It was inevitable that they would find out." Mike answered as he wrapped his arms around her.

"But you wish it was sometime later?" Christine asked.

"Maybe a bit. Not because I wanted this to remain a secret but because I didn't want the girls to put undue pressure on us. I want this to all redevelop naturally." Mike explained.

"I can understand that but they are really smart, Mike. They would have sensed it." Christine remarked.

"I suppose so." Mike said.

"You're worried about getting their hopes up in case this fails?" Christine asked.

"I don't want it to fail. I want it to work and I am going to put in the work to make that happen, but we don't have a good track record." Mike said. Christine nodded in understanding before giving him a long kiss.

"No, we don't but we are entitled to a fresh start." Christine told him as she cuddled up.

"Yes, we are." Mike agreed.

They both fell asleep fairly quickly and stayed asleep all night. Christine had work the next day, and since Katie was off, she and Mike had a day planned. The doctor in the practice that Christine worked did a few blood tests and a physical examination to see if it was even possible for Christine to get pregnant. She would know in a few days.

She would be happy regardless, but she was hoping she could get pregnant immediately and that the pregnancy and baby was healthy. It helped that her pregnancies had always been easy before but she hadn't been pregnant in almost fifteen years. And Mike had some serious misgivings about a baby.

Christine was aware that she could already be pregnant. They had been active all weekend and took no preventative measures but they were both older. Christine had joked before that Mike had barely had to look at her before and she would be pregnant. Maybe it would be that easy again. She hoped that would be the case.

Mike and the girls were working on dinner when she got home and after kissing Mike and both girls, she settled into a kitchen chair to watch them. Mike was a good dad and had connected immediately with both girls. As much as he loved them, she could tell that he missed Lucas. She hoped if she did get pregnant, it would be a boy. Not to replace Lucas, but to heal a part of their hearts the girls just couldn't, not for lack of trying on their part. Katie and Hannah were both wonderful daughters. There was a lot to consider with having a new baby, and Mike was most concerned about how the girls would feel about it.
