Artemis returned with Mnemysene, goddess of memory, who quickly bent down to examine the child. After a few a minutes she stood up.
"There is nothing I can do. She has at most, a days worth of genuine memory. The rest was artificially created using Magic. Without the Magic to sustain them, they simply do not exist. Which means there is nothing for me to help her reclaim. Copying the memories of another would do just what the spell did, create a false identity. She can learn and grow but the fact that she has language is a separate issue."
"How so?" Thor asked.
"Because if whoever made her, did make her from the Slayer, they would have had to use something of her. Like her blood, as you did to make Alexander. It is possible some general information from Faith Lahaine was carried across in her blood by the Magic used to create her. How much, we won't know until she awakens and can be tested. It is best that humans to do that. She is human, after all."
"She can not go back to Sunnydale. No one there knows her and a child alone would be vulnerable." Artemis pointed out.
"Then we need to send her to humans we know can take care of her. Alexander and Cordelia have enough to deal with, without adding an additional charge to them." Thor decided. "So we must come up with another solution."
Back in Xander and Cordelia's new reality, Xander called Allison and told her the name he'd like for his identification. She agreed and promised to have it to him soon.
"Artie wants to see you and Cordelia out at the Warehouse." Leena told him when he hung up. "You may not be able to sign any official paperwork yet, but that doesn't mean he can't get you started on learning the ropes."
"Cool, bottomless cookie jar, here I come!" Xander exclaimed.
Leena smiled and offered them the use of her car to get out the Warehouse.
"Thanks, we'll take you up on on that. It's a bummer I couldn't bring my car to another reality. My uncle rebuilt it. It's teal blue Chrysler Bel Air convertible and absolutely gorgeous. The kind of car my Queen deserves to be chauffeured around in."
Leena smiled indulgently and handed him the keys to her car. Once they arrived, Artie got right down to business. He dropped a very large book in Xander's arms. "The manual, read it."
"Oh gods, even grown ups have homework." He groaned.
"That's volume one. Come on, time for the tour." He led them to a staircase. "We'll start, literally, at the the top. This is the observatory. It is for making celestial observations. One of our fail-safes is connected to celestial observations of the Alpha Centauri Star system. It's in the manual. Moving on."
"Cool, always liked looking at the stars."
"What's Alpha Centauri?" Cordelia asked.
"It's the nearest solar system to our solar system." Xander told her. "Something like four light years away."
"Scifi geek."
"And proud of it. Shall I quote some Klingon love poetry, my Queen?"
"I'll pass on that, Doofus. Never was much for poetry."
"This is the personal quarters archive." Artie informed them, ignoring their banter. It was no worse then Pete and Mika's or Jinx and Claudia's. "When an agent dies, retires or quits, their personal quarters are moved here and new ones are created. It's in the manual. Moving on."
"I have absolutely nothing to say about this." Xander said, a bit shocked at that knowledge.
"I think that's a first for you." Cordelia observed, feeling a bit shocked herself.
"This is the pyramid. It houses the Ancient Archives and the Anubis shrine. The Anubis Shrine provided seismic force to power the original Warehouse 13 by harnessing the vibrations of green moldavite crystals. In order to function properly, the crystals must be carefully balanced; if not, it will cause massive earthquakes. If unbalanced, the crystals will change colors to red until all are balanced. A dog is needed for entering the shrine, as a bark makes the statues of Anubis retract their spears and the door to open."
"Why? Why a dog?" Cordelia asked.
"Because Anubis is depicted as a jackel headed god." Artie answered. "It's in the manual. Moving on."
"I'm surprised you didn't know that, Doofus."
"I've studied the Greek gods. Anubis is Egyptian."
"This is the Feng Shui Spiral. This is where Leena works. Her calm aura means it doesn't interfere with the artifacts. She uses the spiral to determine where artifacts need to be placed, so they don't interfere with each other. It's in the manual. Moving on."
"Our first time here Xander commented on how she had a very calming presence."
"This is the neutralizer processing center, also known as the gooery. It produces the neutralizer goo we use to neutralize the energy that makes an artifact behave the way it does. It's in the manual. Moving on."
"Was it Claudia or Pete that nicknamed it the gooery?" Xander asked.
"Both, independently." Artie replied.
While Artie was giving Xander and Cordelia a tour of the Warehouse, Thor was returning to Earth with the child formerly known as Dawn Summers. The gods having worked out a plan they hoped would keep her safe.
"Cassandra, I need to speak with you." Thor said, as soon as he arrived.
"How can I help you, Thor?" He quickly explained the problem he had accidentally caused and the fact that they couldn't retrieve any memories in her.
"The energy we found in her, permeates her entire being, every atom. We honestly don't think we can remove it without harming her. We have no idea why someone would do this, create this child, let alone implant memories as they did. She's alone and vulnerable, with no identity. will you care for her?"
Cassandra had longed for a child of her own for 3,000 years. And here was a god offering her one. A child she could love and care for. A child who was alone, like she was.
Of course she said yes.
